A Rocky Remake (Pun Intended)

As someone who wasn’t even born when the original movie was released, I may not be the best authority to comment on the reboot film’s trailer. But as someone who found the film at a crucial time in his life, and learned to accept his weirdness (which is actually akin to awesomeness) no matter what, I think I do.

So fasten your seat belts and get ready for my reaction to the reboot trailer!!

First off, the trailer!

A bit of history: Back when the reboot was announced ages ago, I admit, I was intrigued. I wanted to see a modern take on the weirdest film of all time, and since the world has become a weirder place since the original’s release (thank you internet!) I thought it would be an interesting twist (note that I never thought it would be a step up, just a step… somewhere). But then I heard that Dr Frank-N-Furter will be played by Laverne Cox and my interest in the movie dropped. Don’t get me wrong, I was still intrigued (Miss Cox is a good actress after all). Dr Frank is a man (with a sort of androgynous feel to him) in lingerie, and I was hoping Cox would pull it off somehow.

My reaction: I don’t really like the trailer, and after watching the trailer 600 times, I still don’t know what it is about it that I don’t like, I just know that I don’t like it. It is probably how “clean” (for lack of better term) everybody looks. Like in the original, the entire cast was just mad and carefree. With this one the cast members seem like they don’t wanna go overboard for some reason (which they should). To me they even looked like a group of polished youngsters with questionable fashion choices trying to give the cult classic justice.

The trailer ends with Dr Frank exclaiming, “it’s not easy having a good time!” And it shows. It didn’t look like any of the cast members were genuinely enjoying the experience.

Take a look for yourself and tell me what do you think of the trailer? Will you watch the movie anyway (I might, but then block it form my memory)? Do you think Cox makes a good Frank-N-Furtur? Why or why not?

  1. Too hard to tell from such a tiny bit of footage. I’m reserving judgement because so much great talent involved so it has potential to be fantastic. Reeve Carney looks good & there are several other cast members who could bring a lot to it. I think it’s getting unnecessary negative flack even before it’s started so it’s going to struggle for acceptance – unfairly.

True, I have no doubt the movie will be a great one, and id will inspire the next generation the same way the original inspired me (which is the whole point of making it in the first place).
But for me, I don’t feel like it would give the original justice no matter how epic it is…
