Orphan Black SN4 EP6 – The Scandal of Altruism

Earlier this week I thought that having to recap 5 Orphan Black episodes in one go was going to be challenging. With the release of episode 6, and having to recap the mind-blowing and emotional events of the episode made me wish I could write something that easy again…

A lot has happened in this episode, a trade, some science stuffs, a kidnapping/murder, a flashback, and a LOT of tears. So let’s begin shall we!

Krystal: the not so clueless clone returns yet again but this time, with another wild conspiracy theory. Clone club’s go to detective, Art, is here to help. He uses Felix to convince her that her theory is true, and thus keeps her away from clone club and the danger/drama that comes along with it.

Sarah: Cosima tells Sarah about the deal Susan Duncan offered. Duncan wanted genetic material from the Kendall (the original), and Sarah wanted  cheek worm out (which apparently turned out to be a cure to genetic ailments, Dr Leekie had one to “cure” his genetic predisposition to Alzheimer’s, Sarah’s however was to induce an illness in an attempt to understand why she is immuned to the “clone disease”). The problem with this deal is that access to Kendall, means access to Castor DNA as well, and that is a big no no. solution? Kendal has cancer, and the cancer cell that started it all, was a Leda cell (cancer is basically a cell going nuts. The cell starts to divide like mad and produce a lump that is the tumour). So, in return for samples of Kendall’s cancer, Sarah gets cheek worm removed. However, after worm removal/halfway through sample collection, Kendall gets kidnapped. They instantly assume that it was Ira (the Castor clone Duncan is in love with) who did it (cause that’s the only way he could get samples and not die himself). But after Sarah hunts him down she finds that he chose a quicker and more permanent “solution” to his problem (note that I use the quotations around the word here cause the thing he did is NEVER a solution). Sarah then saves Ira, and proceeds with looking for Kendall.

Cosima: after accepting the deal, Cosima is given an ancient looking hard drive in order to share her experimental data (which will help in further studies on the Kendall DNA given). On the day of the exchange, Cosima helps in the removal of Sarah’s cheek worm (finally). However, things for Cosima go downhill from there. The hard drive she was given contained a Trojan that wiped all the data she collected with Scott (always use your own mass storage devices!), Kendall gets kidnapped by an unknown party, and Duncan’s incarceration leading to Cosima’s own. We soon learn that Evie Cho, the head of Brightborn, the same woman who has Cosima in custody, is the “director” in charge of pretty much everything. She is also the one who kidnapped Kendall with plans to kill her off (her goal is to improve humans, cloning did its part, and is of no further use. So the original is a loose end that needs to be tied up). Kendall gives one epically moving speech to Cosima right before she is murdered. Evie then reveals to an already broken Cosima that Delphine (Cosima’s former romantic interest/research partner) was killed after the fall of Dyad (season 3 finale). Needless to say, Cosima (as well as us viewers) cries her eyes out. Evie and her gang leave her there next to the burning van that contains Kendall’s body (why bother kill an already dying Leda clone with no hope of finding a cure now that the original is dead).

Beth: we return to another Beth flashback which I love oh so much. We learn that on her last adventure, Beth went to try and kill Suzan, but then decides not to (cause Suzan loves “her daughters” and is protecting them). Beth then finds out that Evie Cho is actually the master manipulator behind everything. She attempts to kill her, but the head of Brightborn threatens Alison, Cosima, Beth’s parents and Paul. and we already know what happens next.

This season finale type ending of the episode left us asking where to next? With no original DNA, where will they go to find a cure? Sarah was told to back off, and stop digging cause clones who did that before got themselves killed (Beth). She obviously won’t stop, but how far do you think she’ll go? And what will she find?

Comments

  1. Boy, they really shook things up in this episode. The second half of season 4 will be a whole new game. Good review.
