Move over Captain America! Step Aside Captain Britain! Make way for Captain Canada!
Teacher, occasional Boxer and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau can now add Superhero to his CV.
Toronto based Ramon Perez has designed the variant cover for Civil War II: Choosing Sides #5, featuring Justin Trudeau sporting a big red Maple leaf on his tank top, the Haida tattoo on his shoulder, the famous tousled hair, grin and brilliant blue eyes.
Justin is seen sitting relaxed in a boxing ring, Alpha Flight flanking him, with Iron Man pondering in the background. The image plays on his decisive 2012 victory over Conservative Senator Patrick Brazeau in a Fight for the Cure charity boxing match, and his enjoyment of sparring in the ring.
He is not the first Canadian Prime Minister, (and not even the first Trudeau!) to be featured in a Marvel Comic. In 1979, Justin’s father, then PM Pierre Elliot Trudeau was featured in Marvel’s Uncanny X-Men #120.
For those of you who may not know about the Canadian superheroes of Alpha Flight, this team consists of Puck, Sasquatch and Aurora, who have left not only their homes in Canada, but the planet as well, to work for Captain Marvel.
Justin is said to be the Alpha Flights’ old boss. When Captain Marvel and Iron Man are divided on whether to use new character Ulysses’ predictive power a la Minority Report, Alpha Flight – being Canadian first – ask ‘Captain Canada’ for his advice.
Edmonton born writer and artist Chip Zdarsky was approached by Marvel to write this Alpha Flight based story, and says he knew right away that he wanted to include Justin Trudeau.
“He seems to be the popular culture association with Canada right now, right behind (Toronto rapper) Drake — and I probably couldn’t get Drake in the comic”
While the PMO cannot endorse the comic, they were fine with Zdarsky proceeding.
