What Do You Give a 75 Year Old Superhero For His Birthday?

The First Avenger 2011

Hey Skatronixxx readers! Your favorite site will be covering news, panels, and other exciting bits of information that come out of the San Diego Comic Con being held from July 21 – 24 this year. And to kick us off properly, here’s what’s happening in the lead up to the Mother of All Cons!

Created in 1941 by Jack Kirby and Joe Simon, Captain America is turning 75 this year, and the Marvel Superhero is getting a 13-foot-tall bronze statue of his very own to celebrate! According to an exclusive published in USA Today, it will be unveiled at SDCC, and will then head east on a cross-country trip to end up in Prospect Park in Brooklyn, where it will be dedicated on August 10.

Marvel has released this sketch of what the Statue will look like:

Sketch of Statue

The base features the quote ”I’m just a kid from Brooklyn”, which was a line spoken by Chris Evans in Captain America: The First Avenger, and of course the Shield is displayed prominently. Paul Gitter, Senior Veep of Licensing for Marvel at Disney told USA Today that the pose was:

“symbolically chosen to showcase the impressive strength of Captain America and his stoic form”

and added:

“Captain America’s Shield also takes prominence, paying homage to his heroism, indestructible power and determination”.

You can own your very own 12-inch bronze replica if you are quick. Comicave will be releasing a limited edition run of 750; and additionally will be offering 100 made-to-order 35-inch pewter ones. No certain word on when/where these will be available, but I would bet my last dollar that it will be at SDCC.  Comicave helped to design the statue alongside Marvel artists.

Cap’s journey across America from the SDCC to his final home will be journalized via Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.
