Old But Gold (Books #2: Pride and Prejudice)

1082063402

The title of the book says it all. Pride and Prejudice is a story about a bunch of arrogant, proud, racist people who misread everything about each other but eventually learn the truth and find out they are actually quite awesome, and so fall in love and marry.

The story follows Elisabeth Bennet, the second (of five) daughter of a country gentleman, and her adventures (if you want to call it that) during the late 18th century. The story begins with the Bennets talking about the new guy in town, a rich eligible bachelor called Mr. Bingley. Since women can’t inherit anything from their fathers (due to primogeniture laws), Mrs. Bennet jumps at the opportunity to marry off at least one of her daughters.

Without going into too much plot detail, the story pretty much goes crazy from there. Jane (the eldest Bennet daughter) falls in love with Mr. Bingley (and vice versa), but their love story gets cut short by the interference of Bingley’s friend Darcy. For obvious reasons, Elizabeth and Darcy do not see eye to eye, yet this does not interfere with Darcy’s feelings towards Elizabeth. At one point Darcy even admits that even though Elizabeth is indeed “beneath him”, he still loves her and wants to marry her. Elizabeth declines (of course) and we get to watch Darcy prove his awesomeness, and eventually win back Elizabeth’s heart.

The story is a good one because it teaches us how the images we have of ourselves as well as the hasty assumptions we make of other people clouds our judgements, I mean how can we know who that rich a$$**** really is, or that low class gold digger is actually a smart chic, if we don’t talk to them. So moral of the story is, get to know people before you swipe left :p

This story is also one of my favorites cause it was the reason this gem (video below) exists.

What do you think of the book? Would you have given Darcy a second chance before getting the tell all letter?

Let me know what other classics would you like me to review!
