Over the past weekend as Suicide Squad continued to rake in millions of dollars, the DC Extended Universe reached a new milestone, crossing the $2 billion mark after just 3 films. In comparison, it took the Marvel Cinematic Universe 5 films to cross the $2 billion mark. That does make a statement. Even though the DCEU films are lambasted by critics, there’s no doubt that they are a financial success. Critics may continue trashing the DCEU but fans will keep on seeing movies, despite the media trying to convince them not to.
Next year’s Wonder Woman will mark the first female led superhero epic, and that, even though it might get bad reviews, will still rake a lot of cash and break some box office records. The most iconic superhero team of all time, Justice League, will take the center stage for the first time ever in a silver screen. And that is sure to break every record set in November. The point here, is that even though critics might keep on hating the DCEU films, they won’t stop making money. They are based off very popular properties, and recently DC Comics overtook Marvel in comics sales for the month of July. At the end of the day, besides the critics, we all want the same thing; these superhero epics to be successful. And that train isn’t gonna stop anytime soon.
Things may also change for the better as Warner Bros recently changed the heads of the DC films, promoting Geoff Johns and Jon Berg to pilot the DCEU ship. The trailers that were released in San Diego Comic Con 2016 did show that the DC films universe is taking a new approach. There was humor, sarcasm, and lightheartedness in both the Justice League and Wonder Woman trailers. Still, Suicide Squad had a humongous amount of humor and critics still chose to hate. As the saying goes, “haters gonna hate”.
We’ll all be waiting to see the reactions to Wonder Woman and Justice League when they arrive in theaters on June 2 and November 17 2017, respectively.
