Never Alone: The Review

Ah what a game this Never Alone, it might by the best indie game I have played at the moment and I will tell you why, as there is not a lot of game as like it.by Never Alone is a game made by Upper One Games and published by E-Line Media . It’s been released in November 2014 in multiplatforms.

Never Alone is puzzle-platform genre game where you control a little girl named Nuna and her little Arctic fox. Who says platforms means you gotta do a lot of jump around and who says puzzles means you got to use your brain as well (not just your eyes), but it just doesn’t stop at that fortunately to be just an indie game like the rest.

The gameplay is really simple, you go forward, jump, crouch, go backward, throw a weapon (don’t know if it’s actually a weapon) named ‘Bola‘ which is an object to break ice and also to make spirits appears around the environment to help you go forward to your destination. As simple as it sounds, it has been actually more developed than that, as for examples you have to use the Fox for the spirits to go in the direction that you want them to go or even for them to be visible and use them, the Bola is used to mainly break ice as mentioned but others things as well that I would not mention to not spoil the game too much. The puzzles are kinda simple some of them but fun to do with no pressure around but they are really present all along the game which makes it even more enjoyable.

Graphicaly, the game is beautiful as it use the game engine ‘Unity‘. It’s a pretty mix of cartoon and pure 3D as well which give a colorful environment even if you play most of the time in snow and caves, but even so it’s a pleasure for the eyes and mind too.

Story wise, they use folkloric tales from Alaska indigenous about restoring balance in ‘eternal blizzard‘ by going to it’s source. It contains 8 chapters in total which each of them can be finish in maximum 20 minutes (and I’m nice) each. I won’t talk too much about it as it will kinda spoil the game as well.

Overall the game is an absolute delight to play, less than £10 or 10$ on the PSN or XboxLive, Never Alone ( Kisima Inŋitchuŋa) is one of the must buy indie game to experience as you play and learn as well about how they live and traditions from Alaska, as during the game you can collect videos of interviews from people who live and grew up there but also helped to develop the game. If you want an adventure of around 4 or 5 hours of pure beauty and poesie, this game is definitely for you.
