In every family there are topics that are guaranteed to start an argument. For instance, in my family “The Facebook Incident of ’11” is never to be brought up unless someone wants to be hit with a chair at the dinner table in the middle of Thanksgiving Dinner… it’s the reason that I’m STILL not friends with certain members of my family on Facebook (it’s just better that way because unfortunately it IS my circus and they ARE my monkeys). In the SPN Family, one of those topics is …. Adam in the Cage.
It’s one of those plot threads that you can pick at and pick at until the whole rug falls apart… if ya want.
And I do want… and I’m sort of in the mood to see some furniture fly.
For those way in the back… There’s a third Winchester brother. His name is Adam Milligan. Sam and Dean find out about their half brother Adam in episode 4.19 Jump the Shark. Later, Adam becomes the vessel for the archangel Michael who ends up in The Cage with Lucifer.

The general consensus in The Famdom is that Adam is still in The Cage. But, I don’t think so. In episode 10.9 The Things We Left Behind, Castiel tells Claire Novak that her father Jimmy no longer occupies that body with him. He tells her (and the viewers) that when a vessel is damaged beyond repair that the soul of the original occupant goes to Heaven. So basically, being an angel’s vessel is a free ticket to Heaven. Now, what he’s telling her is that in episode 5.22 Swan Song when Lucifer snaps his fingers and blows Castiel to smithereens Jimmy went to Heaven. And, in case you’ve forgotten, Lucifer snapped his fingers and blew up Cas right after the famous line “Hey Assbutt!” when he threw a holy oil Molotov cocktail at Michael (in Adam’s body) thereby burning the vessel beyond repair.

And, if that’s not enough proof for you… When Dean arrives at Stull Cemetery to be there with Sam when Lucifer (in Sam’s body) takes on Michael in the grudge match to end all grudge matches and end the world, Michael tells Dean “Adam’s not home right now”. Now, I say that even if the Adam vessel wasn’t destroyed beyond repair, he wasn’t in there with Michael… therefore, he didn’t fall into The Cage with Michael, Lucifer and Sam.
Now, the majority of my fellow addicts say that Adam is still in The Cage. The Show even sort of pokes fun at that in episode 10.5 Fan Fiction. When “Adam” joins the Winchester Brothers’ family on the stage for a rendition of Carry On My Wayward Son, Sam and Dean ask “Who’s that?”

So, which side are you on? Adam in the Cage or Adam in Heaven? Leave me a comment… just don’t throw any furniture.
Until recently I was in the “Adam’s in the Cage’ crowd, but after watching 900,000 youtube videos (I got lost in youtubelandia) of the guys at Cons and a wide variety of conversations on it….I’m in the Adam wasn’t in that vessel when it went into the cage, therefore, Adam is in heaven with his mom. I won’t throw furniture because….it’s too far for me to toss it at you.

I could very easily go with his soul popped to Heaven after the Assbutt molotov cocktail of fame theory… except for two things:
1. After all that, Dean was later trying to get Death to retrieve Sam’s soul from Hell and he also tried for Adam too but Death tells him he can only have one. This leads me to believe Adam was also in the cage and was a choice. Of course we all know “It’ll always be Sam.”
2. When Michael says “he’s not home right now.” It could just be he was over-riding Adam and not giving him a voice at the time. The phrase can be taken both ways.
As for the Death thing… has Show made continuity errors before? Sure! (Grand Canyon anyone?) But, for me? It’s just WAY more fun to poke fun at poor Adam rotting away in Hell…

But, does Death know whether or not Adam is in the cage?

Well… he seems to know a LOT of things. Except when to duck! *snort*

So if you go back to season six, half way through when Dean and death getogether. When they make the agreement to have Dean be death to get Sams soul back. And I quote..Death said” Dean stop shuffling and deal” Dean responded…” no the Sams soul and Adams souls are in the cage still, I want you to get them both out” Death replied “I’m death , I may make a acception and bring back one soul, definitely not 2. You must pick Dean, Adams soul or Sams? I will only bring back one” To which Dean said ” thunder thunder cats Megs a HOOOOOOOOOOOOO” He said. ” I want Sams now he has a bad or broken part can you cut it off……and so in went the scene. The reason the girls get it wrong is either it’s a adaptation of the story including robots is logical choice if the writers did it on purpose. The other reason is the writers felt an “explainer” was needed so the newer audience knew who he is because after the season six app he was not addressed much after that. So yeah and stuff and things. Not that I know much about this or anything.

But, Dean is who says Adam’s soul is in The Cage… Death only says he’ll only bring back one. He never agrees or disagrees with Dean…. in other words, he neither confirms or denies Dean’s assumption that Adam is in The Cage.

Like you said… he doesn’t deny it either 😉

but that only means that you can’t use Death and that scene as “evidence” one way or the other… that’s why I didn’t mention it in the article. =)

When Sam joins the devil in the cage in season 11, there is no Adam. I think that pretty much answers that question, right?

Well…it would except as I understood that scenario is that was not The Cage…they pulled Lucifer from The Cage into that one and Sam joined home there.

I was thinking about this the past week and I would like to know the answer. It would be good if the story comes up, especially since the cage is back again in Supernatural.
