Marvel’s Cloak And Dagger TV Series Delayed To 2018

Marvel’s plans for world domination look set to be delayed a smidge as their upcoming TV series based around popular comic book characters Cloak and Dagger has been pushed back to 2018.

Set to air on the Freeform Network, writer and co-executive producer of Marvel’s Daredevil, Joe Pokaski, will be at the helm as showrunner, and is reworking his initial script for the series. The show originally received a straight to series order from the network that looks set to stand despite the delay. Freeform is clearly hoping for the show to be a big hit once it airs, as ratings for the channel continue to drop in line with changing trends in the way we consume media. The delay is therefore likely to ensure the show airs at the highest quality in order to become an immediate success.

We’ve unfortunately seen before that Marvel’s brand power isn’t enough to ensure the success of a show. Agents of SHIELD premiered to an audience of 12 million, before a poorly scheduled and unfocused beginning to the show saw ratings dive. Though the quality has been in place for a good while now, the ratings never really recovered, and as such its future is questionable. Freeform will be looking to avoid the same happening with Cloak and Dagger, and there are some clear advantages and disadvantages the show has behind it.

Agents of SHIELD was the first TV show in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and was a huge risk for Marvel to take. The show was touted as being connected to the movies, and this was most clear with the resurrection of fan favourite Phil Coulson. However outside of this connection to the wider MCU often felt a bit lacking, with the notable exception of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and the show initially failed to live up to the hype. As we now know connections between TV and the films are really very limited, be it on cable or Netflix, so expectations for Cloak and Dagger will be realistically set.

So though Marvel certainly now has a lot more experience with TV, Cloak and Dagger’s content could still alienate audiences. The show is essentially a ‘superhero love story’ that sees a pair of teenage runaways, Tyrone “Ty” Johnson (Cloak) and Tandy Bowen (Dagger), discover their gifts compliment one another. Cloak has the gifts of Teleportation and Intangibility, whilst Dagger has the ability to create light daggers and heal people. With Freeform aiming at millennials and teens, the more romantic nature of the show will likely split audiences. There will be those looking to watch only for the superhero action, so it will be interesting to see whether the romance angle will keep people hooked. Often in TV shows romance is forced in there to attract different demographics, but given this will be built around it from the start, things will hopefully feel natural.

Despite the pitfalls the series could fall into, Cloak and Dagger could end up being a very exciting addition to the MCU if done correctly, and if that means waiting a while longer then i’m all for it. In the meantime we’ve got an increasingly amazing 4th season of Agents of SHIELD, Iron Fist, The Defenders and The Punisher all coming up to keep us content. Add to this all the other Marvel projects in the works, and I think we can fairly say we’ve got plenty to enjoy for now.

‘Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger’ is set to premiere 2018.
