wp-1460610284434.jpeg

Howdy guys and welco19me to this weeks edition of on this day so lets see where the music industry takes us this week. This week we kick off in 1953 and we finish in 2015, so with out further ado….

On This Day 14th April……

1953

In 1953, Lita Roza was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with ‘(How Much) Is That Doggie In The Window’. ‘The 27 year old singer was the NME readers’ Top Female artist of 1953 and with this single became the first British singer to top the UK singles chart, (and the first Liverpudlian to do so). For a woman and artist to achieve that in 1953 is definitely a feat, it seems now day’s you don’t need much talent to break into the charts.

1963

In 1963, The Rolling Stones played at The Crawdaddy Club, Richmond and all four members of The Beatles were in the audience. The Crawdaddy Club name is derived from Bo Diddley’s 1960 song ‘Doing The Craw-Daddy’, which The Rolling Stones regularly preformed as part of their set. In turn the club went on to inspire the name of the American music magazine Crawdaddy!

1964

In 1964, The King Bees, (featuring a young David Bowie then David Jones), played at a wedding reception at the Jack Of Clubs in London. The world will never be the same without Bowie… Rest Easy Sir

1966

In 1966, The Spencer Davis Group were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with ‘Somebody Help Me’, it was the group’s second UK No.1

1967

In 1967, David Bowie’s novelty record ‘The Laughing Gnome’ was released in the UK. The track consisted of the singer meeting conversing with the creature of the title, whose sped-up voice (created by Bowie and studio engineer Gus Dudgeon) delivered several puns on the word “gnome”. The song became a hit when reissued in 1973, despite it being radically different to his material at the time, the single made No. 6 in the UK charts. He was forever pushing the envelope in the music industry.
In 1967, A riot broke out at Warsaw’s Palace Of Culture as The Rolling Stones made their first appearance in an Iron Curtain Country; Police used tear gas in a battle with 2,000 fans.

Also in 1976, Polydor Records released The Bee Gees ‘New York Mining Disaster 1941’, It was released with a promotional slogan announcing “The most significant talent since The Beatles”. The record became a Top 20 hit in the UK and US. Well I have to say I love me a bit of The Bee Gees, its great drinking, housework and everything else in between music.

1968

In 1968, Phil Spector married Ronettes singer Veronica Bennett. The couple later divorced in 1973 with Bennett citing several instances of alleged cruelty. There is something seriously wrong with that bloke, she is lucky to get out when she did.

1969

In 1969, The recording of ‘The Ballad Of John and Yoko’ took place with just two Beatles, Paul McCartney and John Lennon. Paul played bass, drums and piano with John on guitars and lead vocals. The song was banned from many radio stations as being blasphemous. On some stations, the word ‘christ’ was edited in backwards to avoid the ban.

1970

In 1970, Creedance Clearwater Revival made their live UK debut when they played the first of two nights at The Royal Albert Hall, London.

1971

In 1971, The Illinois Crime Commission issued a list of ‘drug-oriented records’ including ‘White Rabbit’ by Jefferson Airplane, ‘A Whiter Shade Of Pale’ by Procol Harum and The Beatles ‘Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds’. Can you imagine how long the list would be if it was relevant now?

1972

In 1972, David Bowie released ‘Starman’ as a single in the UK, which became his first hit since 1969’s ‘Space Oddity’ three years before. The lyrics describe Ziggy Stardust bringing a message of hope to Earth’s youth through the radio, salvation by an alien ‘Starman’.

1973

In 1973, Led Zeppelin started a two-week run at No. 1 on the UK album chart with Houses Of The Holy also a No. 1 in the US. The young girl featured on the cover of the album climbing naked up Giants Causeway in Northern Ireland is Samantha Gates who was 6 years old at the time of the shoot.

1975

In 1975, After rumors that Jimmy Page, Steve Marriott, Jeff Beck or Chris Spedding variously would replace Mick Taylor as guitarist in The Rolling Stones, a press release confirmed that Ronnie Wood would be joining the band for their forthcoming American tour.

Also in 1975, Art Garfunkel started a six-week run at No. 1 in the UK with the theme from the film “Watership Down”, ‘Bright Eyes’ which went on to become the biggest selling single of the year. The song was written by the man behind The Wombles, Mike Batt.

1976

In 1976, Eric Faulkner of The Bay City Rollers reportedly came close to death after taking a drug overdose at their manager’s house while in a state of exhaustion.
Also in 1976, Motown Records and Stevie Wonder announced the largest contract renewal to date, worth $13 million.

1978

In 1978, Joy Division played at the ‘Stiff Test – Chiswick Challenge’, at Raffters in Manchester, England. Future managers Rob Gretton and then journalist Tony Wilson saw the band for the first time.

1979

In 1979, The Doobie Brothers went to No. 1 on the US singles chart with ‘What A Fool Believes’, the group’s second US No. 1, it made No. 31 in the UK.

1980

In 1980, Gary Numan released ‘The Touring Principal’, the first long-form rock video to be made commercially available in the UK.

1983

In 1983, The Pretenders bass player Peter Farndon died from a drug overdose. He was sacked from the group on June 14th 1982, (two days before Pretenders guitarist James Honeyman-Scott was found dead of heart failure). Farndon was in the midst of forming a new band with former Clash drummer Topper Headon when he died.

1990

In 1990, Madonna scored her seventh UK No. 1 single with ‘Vogue’, also a  US No. 1 hit. Taken from her soundtrack album I’m Breathless (Music from and inspired by the film Dick Tracy).

1994

In 1994, Kurt Cobain was cremated at the Bleitz Funeral Home, Seattle. The death certificate listed Cobain’s occupation as Poet/Musician and his type of business as Punk Rock. Yet another life that was taken far to soon.

1995

In 1995, American actor, writer and folk singer Burl Ives died of cancer aged 85, He had hits with ‘Funny Way Of Laughing’, ‘The Blue Tail Fly’ and ‘Little Bitty Tear’, he won an Academy Award for “Best Supporting Actor” for his role in the 1958 film “The Big Country”.

1998

In 1998, Welsh singer Dorothy Squires died of lung cancer aged 83, in Llwynypia Hospital, Rhondda, Wales. In 1953 she had a No. 12 single ‘I’m Walking Behind You’, she was also one married to English actor Roger Moore. I’m sure there were plenty of ladies wishing they were in her shoes being married to the ever-so handsome Roger Moore!

1999

In 1999, UK singer, songwriter and actor Anthony Newley died of cancer. He scored 12 UK Top 40 singles from 1959-1962 including the No. 1 single ‘Why’. He won the 1963 Grammy Award for “Song Of The Year” with ‘What Kind of Fool Am I?’, He was also married to actress Joan Collins from 1963 to 1971.

2001

In 2001, Sean Puffy Combs, (P. Diddy), was arrested in Miami for riding a scooter in South Beach on a suspended driver’s license. He was released 20 minutes later after signing a promise to appear in court.

2002

In 2002, Ashanti started a ten week run at No. 1 on the US singles chart with ‘Foolish’ and on the same started a three-week run at No. 1 on the US album chart with her self-titled album.

2003

In 2003, A man was arrested and accused of making up a Bjork concert then selling tickets. Alex Conate allegedly sold tickets worth $14,000 at $40 each after persuading a San Diego nightclub owner that Bjork had agreed to play there. He was accused of taking the money and moving to Hawaii, where he was arrested.

2009

In 2009, A planned auction of nearly 1,400 items from the former home of Michael Jackson was cancelled. A public preview of the collection had already begun in Los Angeles and the exhibition of Jackson’s possessions would stay open untill the end of the next week. A last-minute settlement meant Jackson’s belongings would now be returned to him. In response, he had dropped a lawsuit against Juliens Auctions.

Also in 2009, Former Beatles George Harrison was honoured with a posthumous star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles. Sir Paul McCartney attended the unveiling outside the landmark Capitol Records building, joining Harrison’s widow Olivia and son Dhani. Eric Idel, Oscar-winning actor Tom Hanks and musician Top Petty also attended the ceremony.

2013

In 2013, Justin Bieber caused outrage after writing a message in a guestbook at the Ann Frank Museum, which stated he hoped the holocaust victim would have been a fan. The 19-year-old wrote: “Truly inspiring to be able to come here. Anne was a great girl. Hopefully she would have been a belieber”. It provoked fierce online criticism of the Canadian singer, who was in Amsterdam as part of a tour. He has no respect for anyone and I’m sorry but I really don’t understand what people see in his music Or him? But I’m a 35-year-old that had the pleasure of growing up with “Real” music. 😉

2015

In 2015, American R&B and soul singer Percy Sledge died of liver cancer at his home in Baton Rouge aged 73. The inspiration behind his 1966 US No. 1 hit ‘When a Man Loves a Woman’, came when Sledge’s girlfriend left him for a modelling career after he was laid off from a construction job in late 1965.

Damien SN1 EP6 – ‘ Temptress ‘

wp-1460593068295.jpeg

Holy shit what an episode! I was on the edge of my seat the whole time and my mind was working overtimeda trying to process what my eyes were seeing and just when I thought I had my head around it BANG! Mazzara throws another twist into the mix that creates heaps more questions and what you thought was real was actually not or was it? For those of you missed last weeks episode or like me have a bad memory here is a recap below.

SN1 EP5 – ‘ Seven Curses ‘

Damien goes to meet a shrink about this PTSD and while there he meets the family of the little boy he saved at the subway station. The boy’s father was injured while serving in the army and it undergoing treatment. When Damien asks him to let him shoot his agony, the soldier confesses to Damien that he plans to commit suicide and requests Damien to shoot his attempt. Simone steals the keys to Damien’s apartment from Armani and tries to understand what her sister Kell was trying to do before she died in a freak accident. Damien, quite disturbed after the soldier’s suicide goes to his parent’s home and tries to kill himself in the garage by turning on the car engine and injecting himself with something to lose conscious. After he falls unconscious, tow dogs drag him out and stand guard for him.

SN1 EP6 – ‘ Temptress ‘

Ok let’s get into this weeks episode, it was full of twists but has also raised more questions about Damien and his so-called protectors. Damien wakes in hospital only to see Ann trying to convince the doctor that his suicide attempt was an accidental drug overdose, but the doctor is not stupid and knows a suicide when she sees one she calls to tells Damien that Detective Shay will be by later to speak to him. Damien removes the oxygen, gets dressed and escapes from hospital to speak to John Lyons and find out more about Ann. Amani calls Damien and tells him that he has someone who needs to tell him something, when he arrives he meets a tattoos artist that tells him he was forced to tattoo the 666 in his head by to men, and was worried Damien had recognize him from the VA hospital elevator.
Damien receives a call from the doctor and is told they had found hallucinogens in his blood and he suspects that Ann has been poisoning him in order to make him believe he is the Antichrist. Damien goes home and throws out all the food not knowing what was poisoned and what wasn’t, Damien is starting to feel happier now he is starting to realize that the whole Antichrist story is totally fabricated, he tells Simone its like a dark cloud is lifted and then he leans in and starts kissing her? Hold up! what the hell?? That totally came out of nowhere or did I miss something?

Damien sweet talks his way into Lyons office and takes a file of a woman with him and discovers  that’s his mother and she  is actually alive and living in a quiet countryside estate …. Now I definitely didn’t see that coming it’s totally blindsided me. Damien makes contact with her and meets with her at what looks like his childhood home which struck me as a little odd, she tells him she was told that he and his father were dead and that these people are extremely dangerous. Ann followed Damien to his mother’s home and the struggled and in the struggle Damien’s mum lost her footing and fell down the flight of stairs hitting her head, Damien tries to help her but quickly realizes she is gone. He attacks Ann and grabs her by the throat he is then tackled by two of her goons and they try to inject him with something but he manages to avoid it and runs out of there and drives off but later gets arrested by Detective Shay who leaves Damien in the car and he watches on while the old woman attacks Shay and Lyons and then turns on Damien, he wakes up screaming in an ambulance as they are trying to sedate him. Damien wakes up in a hospital room calling for his mother and Ann rushes to his side to calm him and its then he realizes it was all a dream and tells Ann to go away and leave him alone, she then relizese that he hates her and she is visually upset and leaves the hospital in tears.

Lucifer SN1 EP11 – ‘ St. Lucifer ‘

lucifer.jpg

So with no episode last week, when we left Lucifer, Detective Decker who had been drinking and threw herself at Lucifer and I imagine to everyone surprised he turned her down, I know I didn’t expect that. Here is a quick recap of episode 10…

SN1 EP10 – ‘ Pops ‘

Decker and Lucifer investigate the poisoning death of the owner/Chef at an upscale Mexican restaurant, Suspicion falls on the owner’s estranged son a recovering drug addict, and sous-chef Anne who would assume control of the restaurant if the son was out of the picture. The investigation complicated by the surprise arrival of Chloe’s mother. Malcom reveals to Dan his plans to kill Lucifer, as directed by Amenadiel and Maze visits Dr. Martin as a patient.

SN1-EP11 – ‘ St. Lucifer ‘

Chloe wakes up and slowly starts to realize she is not in her bed, nor is she clothed and then it dawns on her exactly who’s bed she is naked in and its in that moment you see the “oh shit what have I done” look on her face that I’m sure many of us have experience at one time or another? Lucifer cheekily asks Chole if she would like a double espresso or a hair of the dog while he strings her along thinking that they had slept together. Lucifer has gotten some sort of rush from turning Chloe down and seeks to replicate that rush by doing good deeds starting with the latest murder the dynamic duo were called to investigate, Mr Dunlear an ex ball player come philanthropists helping the children of Hati. Lucifer decides that his function must go on and offers the grieving wife to hold the function at LUX, hoping the good deed would provide him with another rush but alas that wasn’t so.

Malcom has Dan in the basement cable tied to a poll, he tells Dan he was brought back from hell by an angel and in order to stay out of hell and live a full life, he has to put a bullet in Lucifer, Dan tells Malcom he doesn’t like Lucifer but he wont allow him to kill him and that’s when Malcom reminded Dan that his print are all over the weapon so it will actually be you killing him. Chloe and Lucifer attend a luncheon full of women in the hopes it Lucifer can charm some information out of them, the suave devil entertains the ladies when a plan D presents itself to the duo. Malcom goes back to the basement to taunt Dan more and he get him to come close enough to kick the food out of this hands and food and cutlery go flying and Dan managers to hide the knife under his foot, he finally able to break out of the basement to find Lucifer.

Maze pays Amenadiel a visit and they bond over wine, both feeling lonely and by the looks could lead to a lot more bonding. Lucifer look devilish for this evening function is surprised when Malcom is behind him pointing a gun at him, Lucifer is able to bargain him off with the pentecostal coin, Mrs Dunlear comes looking for Lucifer the “man of the hour” and it hits him, she murdered her husband and as he turned she shot Lucifer in the chest. Dan gets to LUX and finds Lucifer on the ground upstairs shot in the chest my then Lucifer’s takes a breath much to their surprise. Lucifer is speaking to Maze again and soon finds out she slept with Amenadiel, he tells her that his dear brother got some on to kill him and is not sure why he is alive, he slices his hand with a pocket knife and there was no cut or blood, so why is he immortal sometimes and completely human other times? Lucifer heads to Chloe’s places to test a theory, Chloe tells him their relationship goes further than just work and she is able to let her guard down around him, she can’t do that with anyone else and tell him he makes her vulnerable and at the moment he cuts his hand with the pocket knife behind his back and there is blood in his hand, with a shocked and confused look he tells her that it appears you make me vaunrabl too.

What a great episode didn’t see it going down that road and normally I can pick that stuff a mile away and then I get board with the show, but Lucifer is different It keeps me guessing and interested and now even more so with this episode!

Bates Motel SN4 EP5 – ‘ Refraction ‘

wp-1460510654599.jpeg

It’s that time of the week again, but I swear the weeks are getting longer waiting for “Bates Day” to roll around how about you guys? You can never have too much Bates. So let’s do a quick recap of episode 4 before we kick off “Refraction”.

‘Lights of Winter’ SN4 EP4

Norman has an adventure with his new friend Julian to a strip club. Norma get her first real taste of happiness at the White Pine Bay annual winter festival, and Romero finds himself in an awkward situation. Dylan finds himself caught between two families, when Emma asks him to move to Seattle with her and her dad.

‘Refraction’ SN4 EP5

Norma doesn’t understand why or who would break in and trash her home and her favorite stained glass window, she has kept a pretty low profile and believes she hasn’t pissed anyone off lately and thinks it could possibly be Bob Paris’s doing, Romero reassures Norma its wasn’t Paris’s doing but someone in the drug trade that has it in for him. Norma heads into town to find someone who can fix her favorite stained glass windows and is being followed by a brown car but who could it be? The beat up brown car belongs to Chick who follows Norma into the hardware store where he hears she needs a window fixed and now also has her address.
Norman realises after the adventure he and Julian had, that he indeed needs help and perhaps he is in the right place for that after all, he seems more willing in therapy now, but I can’t help thinking he is just playing the game to be released sooner or is that just me being overly suspicious? Norman tells Dr Edwards that he and his mother have close bond, he goes on to explain why their bond is so close but you can see Dr Edwards is suspicious and is starting to realize that Norman’s problem is actually his mother, with the session over Norman asks to make a call to his sick friend Emma but instead he calls mummy dearest but little does he know all calls are monitored and numbers checked. Dr Edwards receives a call back from the police regarding Norman’s accusations about Norma are unfounded and have not found any evidence supporting the accusations.

Chick who followed Norma to the hardware store pays her a visit, claiming he is from the hardware store and here look at the broken window. Norma is unsure of him but lets him in any way to look at the window, Chick has an agenda but not sure what is just yet and when he is asked what happened to him, he tells her that he swerved to miss a dog and rolled his car a few times. With Julian back at Pineview Norman rushes over to greet him only to realize that Julian has undergone a lobotomy, frightened he runs outside to compose himself while sitting on the bench he hear’s a familiar voice and sees his mother, she asks him how therapy is going and that he doesn’t have to talk about anything that upsets him. Dylan goes for his job interview but it’s not going to plan so he tells them his last job was in the drug trade and that he was very good at what he did and he thinks he would be great at the job he is applying for. Chick returns to the motel at an odd hour with plans for the new window and he mentions he knows Caleb is her brother, Norma is clearly creeped out excuses herself for the situation and head for the house.

Norman is in a good mood at therapy because Norma come to visit, Dr Edwards asks Norman if it was possible that he had imagined his mother visiting but Norman is adamant that the visit was real. Dr Edwards tells Norman he knows he spoke to his mother and not Emma and he also knows that Norman wasn’t on the visitors list, that’s when you can see Norman’s mood change, he is upset and feels he is being checked up on and he starts to flip out. The good Dr manages to calm him down but quickly realizes that Norman has slipped into his “Mothers” persona and that “She” thinks Norman “is a weak boy who is easy to take advantage of”, but I’m not sure the good Dr is ready or equipped for all the crazy thats about to follow.

Romero knows Rebecca trashed Norma’s house looking for the second safe deposit box key, so he confronts her at the dinner and tells her he doesn’t have the key and she has crossed the line. When he gets home Norma says she has found someone to fix the window then goes on to ask if he killed Bob Paris, Romero doesn’t answer but she knows and asks why, he tells her he had no choice. Chick calls in to talk to Norma and admits to her he lied about what happened to him, it was actually her brother Caleb that beat him and left him for dead then took off with his family, Norma is visibly upset and scared and asks him what he wants from her and tells her he wants justice and to know where he is.

Was yet another great episode, starting to see Romero and Norma becoming comfortable with each other, they actually make a great couple. We see Norman starting to show the “Norma” side of his personality a little more and I don’t think we have seen the last of Chick or the jealousy of Rebecca.

The Inspiration Behind Norman Bates **GRAPHIC CONTENT**

norman

Since there was not Bates Motel episode this week i thought i would have a look into what or who inspired Hitchcock’s Psycho and the birth of Norman Bates and what I found was totally disturbing but very intriguing nonetheless. Norman Bates was a fictional character created by Robert Bloch for his novel Psycho and was portrayed by Anthony Perkins in Hitchcock’s 1960 film of the same name, but did you know that Norman wasn’t just purely fictional, he was actually based on a convicted murderer by the name Ed Gein.

*WARNING DISTURBING CONTENT TO FOLLOW*

Who is Ed Gein you ask? Well Ed was born on the 27th August 1906 in La Crosse County, Wisconsin. Ed also goes by The Mad Butcher, he was killer and a body snatcher and his crimes were all committed around his hometown of Plainfield, Wisconsin where he exhumed corpses from local cemeteries and fashioned keepsakes and trophies from their bones and skin. Ed Gein confessed to killing Mary Hogan a tavern owner on December 8th, 1954 and Bernice Worden the Plainfield hardware store owner on November 16th, 1957. Gein had been in the hardware store the evening before Bernice Worden disappearance, the Police suspected Gein and searched his property and what they found was disturbing. Investigators found Worden’s decapitated body in a shed, hung upside down by ropes at her wrists, with a crossbar at her ankles. Her torso was dressed out like a deer and she had been shot with a .22-caliber rifle, the mutilations to her body occurred after her death. Upon searching the house the investigators were even more shocked, sickened and disturbed by what they had found.

The following is what was found in Gein’s house:

● Whole human bones and fragments
● A wastebasket made of human skin
● Several chairs covered in human skin
● Skulls on his bedposts
● Female skulls and some with the tops sawn off
● Bowls made out of human skulls
● A corset made from a female torso skinned from shoulders to waist
● Leggings made from human leg skin
● Masks made from the skin of female heads
● Mary Hogan’s face mask in a paper bag
● Mary Hogan’s skull in a box
● Bernice Worden’s entire head in a burlap sack
● Bernice Worden’s heart in a plastic bag in front of Gein’s potbellied stove
● Nine (9) vulvae in a shoe box
● A young girls dress and the vulvas of two (2) females judged to have been about fifteen years old
● A belt made from female human nipples
● four (4) noses
● A pair of lips in a window shade drawstring
● A lampshade made from the skin of a human face
● Fingernails from female fingers

All the items found at Gein’s house were photographed and then destroyed, he told investigating officers that between 1947 and 1952 he made as many as 40 night visits to three different cemeteries to exhume recently buried bodies while he was in a “daze-like” state (similar to what we see with Norman’s blackouts) On 30 of those visits he would come out of the daze while still in the cemetery and left the grave in good order and return home emptyhanded. On other occasions he would dig up recently buried middle-aged women he thought resembled his mother and took them home, where he tanned their skin to make paraphernalia. Soon after the death of Gein’s mother, he began to create a “woman suit” so that he could become his mother to literally crawl into her skin. His practice of donning the tanned skins of women was described as an “insane transvestite ritual”

Sheriff Art Schley from Waushara County, reportedly assaulted Gein during questioning by banging Gein’s head and face into a brick wall and as a result Gein’s initial confession was ruled inadmissible. In 1968 Art Schley died of heart failure at the age of 43, before Gein’s trial, its said by many who knew Schley that he was traumatized by the horror of Gein’s crimes and his fear of having to testify about assaulting Gein, caused his death. November 21st 1957 Gein was arraigned on one count of first degree murder and pled not guilty by reason of insanity, he was found mentally incompetent and unfit for trial and sent to Central State Hospital for the Criminally Insane and later sent to Mendota State Hospital where he was diagnosed with schizophrenia. On November 14th 1968 Gein was found guilty of first-degree murder by Judge Robert H. Gollmar and spent the rest of his life in a mental hospital. Gein’s house and property were scheduled to be auctioned March 30, 1958 , amid rumors the house was to become a tourist attraction but on March 27th the house was destroyed by fire and arson was suspected but was never officially solved. The car he used to haul the bodies of his victims was sold at public auction for $760 to a carnival sideshow operator Bunny Gibbons, later Gibbons charged carnival goers 25 cents admission to see it. Gein died on July 26, 1984 of respiratory failure due to lung cancer at the age of 77 in Stovall Hall at the Mendota Mental Health Institute.

Ed Gein’s story has had lasting effects on American pop culture by its numerous appearances in film, music and literature. His story first came to widespread public attention in the fictional version by Robert Bloch in his 1959 suspense novel Psycho, then in Alfred Hitchcock’s 1960 film of Bloch’s novel. Gein’s story has been loosely adapted into a number of movies, including Deranged (1974), In the Light of the Moon (2000), Ed Gein: The Butcher of Plainfield (2007), Hitchcock (2012), and the Rob Zombie movies House of 1000 Corpses and its sequel, The Devil’s Rejects. Gein has also served as a model for several book and film characters, most notably such fictional serial killers as Norman Bates (Psycho), Leatherface (The Texas Chain Saw Massacre), Buffalo Bill (The Silence of the Lambs) and Bloody Face from American Horror Story.

It goes without saying that Gein was a deranged human, but he will forever be a source of inspiration for all things dark and twisted.

Damien SN1 EP5 – ‘ Seven Curses ‘

sevencurses.jpg

Wow! What an episode, it was dark with little twists that are slowly starting to unravel bit by bit. By far the darkest episode yet, and I believe its only going to get darker as it unravels more. Before we get in to the ‘Seven Curses’ let’s do a quick recap of ‘The Number of a Man’.

‘Number of a Man’ SN1-EP4

Detective Shay asks Damien to come in for further questioning, in regards to the recent deaths that are centered around Damien. They each threaten each other, before Damien mentions Ann’s interested in him. Shay visits Ann, she shows him the vault which is now a wine cellar and suggests Damien’s time spent as a war photographer has effected his mind. Simone’s mother brings in a witch doctor to put Kelly’s spirit to rest. The witch doctor burns her belongings which emits an orange flame before turning blue. In the ashes, they find her journal with the number 666 burned into the page. Shay’s son Jacob nearly drowns in the backyard pool.

Ok lets jump into ‘Seven Curses’ SN1-EP5

Like i said before, this episode was a cracker and Glen Mazzara, his team and the cast are killing it! Just to be clear they are killing it an awesome way, every episode just gets better and it hooks me in just that little bit more. This episode we see Damien looking for help which makes us believe he’s not just the beast in the making but also a man, will he be able to balance both sides of himself or will the beast take over? Damien seeks help from a Doctor which leads him to a veteran hospital where he runs into the woman who’s son he had saved from the on coming train, she was visiting her husband who was in the hospital and asks Damien if he would meet him.

We see an immediate connection between Damien and veteran, it pulls at the heartstrings and he photographs the veterans daily struggles in the hops of getting their story out. Simone believe Damien is the sole cause of he sisters death but Amani believes he is suffering mentally . We see Ann asking if she has been a good mother and keeping him safe, hinting she is actually his biological mother. Simone gets more than she bargained for while looking for photos at Damien’s apartment, two men in dark clothing and masks break in and ransacked Damien’s apartment looking for him. While at the hospital the veteran asks Damien to assist him in committing suicide, but he wants no part in it, he has had seen too much death. Damien searches the hospital when he finds the Veterans bed empty and he stumbles across a group of injured individuals that start chanting about the serpent with the number 666 when he enters the room. Damien’s connection with the vet leads him down a dark path as he photographs his suicide, its raw, dark and heartbreaking.

In this episode we are also starting to see a relationship form between Amani and Veronica and we have also learned that Veronica is Ann’s daughter and Damien’s sister. The Vatican also comes into play in this episode and you see the crypt where the daggers are held. This by far is the best episode to date, we are learning more about this life and the people surrounding him but there are still many questions to be answered.
