Ryan Reynolds talks about script for ‘Deadpool 2’

rsz_deadpool2

So Ryan Reynolds isn’t hanging around by the sounds of it with getting the Deadpool sequel ball rolling he was doing a podcast with Chris Hewitt from Empire and was quoted as saying “We are on a script, we are well into a script” this of course is music to my ears.

It has so far been a box office success taking what the last Wolverine did in its entire run in one weekend and it’s not hard to see why the film was amazing from start to finish. One person who seems to be eager to get in on the action is Avatar actor Stephen Lang I won’t spoil who he wants to play for the people who have yet to see the film(Just make sure you stay for the end credits). But below is a picture of Lang pulling a strong pose to show he is ready via his Instagram.

rsz_lang

Reynolds also spoke about the issues he had with pulling the current Deadpool film through production nightmares he said the following.

We has endless conversations about other X-men. Taskmaster was in the script originally, too expensive. We had versions where we wanted Hugh Jackman in there, we wanted all kinds of cameos from different people, but it just becomes a big mess at the studio.

We went through such hell developing the script and which X-men we could keep and which we couldn’t and it just turned into a nightmare. The studio would just say ‘too expensive, too expensive to expensive’ to everyone. So we were like ‘Well what about Negasonic Tennage Warhead’ and they said ‘Negasonic what?’

Seeing as how well the first movie has already done I can’t see there being the same problem with the sequel (Fingers crossed). You can listen to the podcast in its entirety on the following link https://soundcloud.com/empiremagazine/deadpool-spoiler-special-with-ryan-reynolds (Be warned if you have not seen the film yet I would not give this a listen as they talk about the film in its entirety)

‘Wolverine 3’ Gets An R-Rating

the-wolverine-wallpaper-2

It seems that the Deadpool-effect is already taking hold at 20th Century Fox with sources out of the recent companies Toy Fair presentation reporting that the next Wolverine film with be R-Rated.

The image below (uploaded on imgur by RayChaos) shows a pamphlet that has been claimed to have been handed out at the event, revealing the companies projected rating for Wolverine 3.

wolverin3

Fans of the berserker may question how it has taken this long for Hugh Jackmans violent Logan to get a bloody adaption. This is in no doubt a reaction to the success of Ryan Reynolds Merc-With-A-Mouth, whose R-Rated exploits has seen Director Tim Miller‘s work surpassed Fifty Shades of Grey’s 85.2 Million on Presidents Weekend and the month of February with a cool $135 Million.
The Reynolds lead film also has a stranglehold on the crown as the biggest opening ever for a R-Rated Movie beating out Matrix Reloaded’s $91.8 Million debut.

The Wolverine Director James Mangold will return to direct the third film which Jackman revealed last year will explore the father/son relationship between Logan and Professor Xavier who will once again be portrayed by a returning Patrick Stewart.

Wolverine 3 is slated to hit theatres March 3, 2017 with production staring on the project this April.

Book Series You Should Read This Year

It’s 2016 and chances are if you have a Goodreads account, you’ve set up your Goodreads Reading Challenge 2016.

In response to this, I thought it’d be good to share with all of you some series I have read/am reading that I think you should all add to your shelves – Goodreads and real life.

Chaos Walking  – Patrick Ness

_MG_6902

The Chaos Walking series is a trilogy by Patrick Ness – I recently finished and wrote a review on the second book The Ask and The Answerand I’ve also reviewed the first, The Knife of Never Letting Go, and only three days ago did I finally complete the concluding novel, Monsters of Men.

This series is unspeakably awesome. The premise centres around a boy named Todd who’s growing up in a town where everyone can hear each others thoughts – it’s called The Noise, and it is a disease that was passed to the humans from the planet which made everyone able to hear each others thoughts – and wiped out all of the woman.

Then everything changes when Todd finds a spot where there is no Noise, and a girl standing in the midst of it.

This series is so absolutely stunning. It’s raw, it’s incredibly written and everything from the characters to the world building are incredible. The ending is so fucking gut wrenching and I damn near threw my book across a packed tube (justifiable.) and I’m just so. Torn up. You know when your life just feels better having read a series? This is one of those for me.

Read it, love it, sob a lot and get back to me.

The Young Elites – Marie Lu

_MG_6904

The Young Elites is a recent series, with it’s second book The Rose Society only coming out recently. This story follows a young woman from an abusive home who has been marked by a blood disease that left her with a scar where her eye should be – and with incredible supernatural abilities.

This is one of the darkest books I’ve ever read – riddled with abuse, graphic violence and intense fight scenes, it is constantly gripping and never boring. It’s also got an incredible cast of characters, diverse and most with their own Elite powers.

On top of that, the main character is dark – she isn’t a poor fragile songbird who finds these beautiful powers – she’s a tragic, angry person with a fury in her and dark, destructive powers.

The first book left me desperate for more – it broke my heart in so many ways, with such a gut-wrenching and unexpected ending. I was in bits.

I’ve also heard very good things about Marie Lu’s other trilogy, the Legend trilogy – so that’s next on my series to read list.

_MG_6905

Shades of Magic – Victoria Schwab

_MG_6907

There isn’t much I can say about the Shades of Magic series other than the fact that the first book, A Darker Shade of Magic is probably one of my favourite books of all time ever. This isn’t an exaggeration or hyperbolic -I fell hard for this magical world.

My full review of A Darker Shade of Magic can be found earlier in my blog so you get the full scale, but in short;

Kell is the last of his kind, a blood magician, who can travel through universes, between the four versions of London in existence.

However, when an artifact from the abandoned Black London makes its way into Kell’s life, it’s up to him to take it back – which can be difficult when a thief has decided to join you for the ride.

I can’t emphasise enough how much I loved A Darker Shade of Magic – it left me yearning for so much more, then low and be-damn-hold, A Gathering of Shadows will be coming out February 23rd this year. I’m so excited I can barely contain it – getting to go back to this incredible world, with such inventive, diverse characters? That’s a genuine gift.

(Oh also it is GETTING A TV SERIES!!! And Victoria is writing the pilot – follow her on Twitter for more updates! And also because she’s super nice.)

_MG_6909

So, there we go – three series I could not recommend more highly to you in 2016. I’ll also sneakily drop in here that you should for sure be reading Saga because God knows what kind of hell you’re living in without this graphic novel in your life.

Let me know if you’ve read any of these – or, let me know what you’re reading! I’m always looking for new books to splurge on.

Fare thee well,

Fran

Deadpool Review

Deadpool

Much has been made of Deadpool actor, Ryan Reynolds, quest to bring the title hero to the big screen after the characters mishandled debut in Wolverine Origins (2009).

The actors passion however should not be under-sold as it this aspect that shines throughout Deadpools glorious return to the big screen.

Reynolds of course plays the Merc-With-A-Mouth Wade Wilson, a lippy thug-for-hire who finds himself facing certain death after finding out he has terminal cancer. The timing couldn’t be worst given that the rogue has found love in the form of Morena Baccarin’s Vanessa, a hooker-with-a-heart-of-gold and the action flicks self proclaimed “hot chick.”

Wilson soon finds himself going to extreme lengths to cure his ailment leading to our hero unlocking his latent mutant abilities of healing (like X-Men favourite Wolverine) at the expense of Wilson pretty little mug.

Factor in that the bad guy kidnaps his girl after our hero torches villain Ajax’s (Ed Skerin) lab, and Deadpool is out for revenge.

Reynolds who is probably best known for his comedic roles is on fire, mixing in his own sardonic delivery with the quick witted and cult laden retorts that Deadpool is known for. The 4th wall break from the comic books is also present and used to great effect as the story balances classic superhero origin story and kick-ass action.

Supporting appearances from X-Men Colossus (Stefan Kapicic) and Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand) are a welcome palette cleanser to hyperbolic Wilson, with both making great comedic “straight men“. The scene in which Deadpool literally breaks his limbs trying to beat up Colossus had my fellow cinema goers and myself rolling in the aisle.

If Deadpool has a weakness it would be its over zealous in-jokes with regards to the characters comic-book past. The references will have knowing fans geeking-out while causal viewers might find certain jokes fall flat. But there are enough dirty jokes and movie references peppered in to keep all invested in Wilson fight for revenge.

Overall Deadpool makes up for the beloved Merc’s dire debut, which is referenced, gagged and easter egged on more than one occasion. Tim Miller’s film is not only a worthy addition to the ever expanding X-Men universe but an exciting entry into the weird world of Wade Wilson. Roll on Deadpool 2.

Now … where did I park my Unicorn?

‘X-Force’ Is Ryan Reynolds Next Passion Project

xforce

With Deadpool garnering critical and commercial success, it seems a no-brainer that 20th Century Fox would move ahead with the R-Rated Superhero genre, so it shouldn’t come as that much of a surprise that Deadpool 2 is reported as being greenlit already.

A source out of The Hollywood Reporter confirms that Ryan Reynolds Merc-With-A-Mouth will go into production without Director Tim Miller at its helm but thats not to say that the team of Miller, and writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick won’t remain together as Fox are keen to keep the three men involved.

As Miller, Reese and Wernick prepare for Deadpool 2, the man himself did reveal recently that an X-Factor film is high on his list as the next comic adaption he wants to get off the ground: “In the future, I think, if we’re doing a bunch more Deadpool movies, we’re gonna really explore the X-Men a lot,” Reynolds quip , adding, “And maybe X-Force. X-Force my priority. I really want to get that in.

Much like the Deadpool movie, the X-Force comics had a far mature tone than is expected from Marvel with various incarnations of the team dealing with Mutant threats with extreme force. Incidentally at one point Wolverine headed up the team that consisted of Deadpool, Psylocke and Archangel, characters that have all been introduced into the 20th Century Fox Mutant universe. Although Hugh Jackman has gone on record as saying that his time with the Mutant franchise will soon be at an end, maybe a new spin-off franchise might change his mind.

After all, if Reynolds can get a Deadpool movie onto the big screen, maybe a Jackman-Reynolds X-Force movie doesn’t sound all that unrealistic.

Deadpool hits UK Theatres this week.

‘The Flash’ Will Crossover With CBS’s ‘Supergirl’

Flash-Supergirl-1-600x795

Even since The Flash and Arrow creator Greg Berlanti announced last year that Supergirl was to appear on CBS, many fans questioned whether any of the CW based characters would crossover onto the rival programming. A seemingly impossible feat given the rights to characters belonging to numerous people. Until now.

Fans wishes have come true as Grant Gustin’s Barry Allen will be speeding his way into National City in an upcoming episode of Supergirl scheduled to broadcast on Monday, March 28. The reveal came courtesy of executive producers Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg who expressed their excitement stating:

We are so incredibly excited to announce something that we have dreamed of happening since we starting making Supergirl — The Flash and Supergirl are teaming up! We want to thank Grant Gustin for making the time to come visit (on top of his already immense workload) and all of the folks at CBS, The CW, Warner Bros. and DC for working this out. And finally thanks to the fans and journalists who have kept asking for this to happen. It is our pleasure and hope to create an episode worthy of everyone’s enthusiasm and support.

This will mark the first time that Kara Danvers (Melissa Benoist) will interact with a character from the growing CW DC universe, effectively integrating Supergirl into fold. This will leave fans wondering if this could become more than a one off with Arrow, The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow crossing-over on numerous occasions. Could Supergirl turn up in Star City or Central City next?

I guess … skies the limit right.

‘Hulk’ Will Be More Verbal In ‘Thor: Ragnarok’

hulk

Its safe to say that Marvel’s next Thor film is early days into pre-production but more details continues to leak by way of the director himself Taika Waititi.

In an interview with Hitflix, the What We Do In The Shadows Director discuss the nature of having the Incredible Hulk in Thor: Ragnarok, a character that isn’t the most chattiest of The Avengers. “It’s interesting, because at the moment, there’s a big conversation that’s happening about how far to push that. Whether or not The Hulk should be [verbal/conscious]”, revealed Waititi.

Although he couldn’t confirm that the Green-Guy could become more eloquent, he did confirm that the discussion is on the table. “I think a lot of those conversations have more to do with what’s going to come up in future movies. So I think a lot of those decisions are larger group decisions, rather than anything to do with just me or the writer. They have a lot of stuff that they have to consider. But I do think that’s the best way to track it. I think we all want that. I think we all want to see that development and the evolution of that character. I also think you can do it in a fun way.”

Fun certainly seems to be on Waititi’s mind with the film having been described as a ‘road trip movie’ with Thor and Banner at the wheel. Two characters who have had a building competition between starting back in 2012’s Avengers Assemble.

A Norse-God and a cantankerous Indestructible monster? Sounds like an interesting road trip.

‘Hanna Barbera’ Comics Get A Makeover By DC

sd

Hanna Barbera cartoons have been touchstone for iterations of generations growing up, from the sitcom-antics of The Flintstones to the Horror-lite mis-adventures of The Mystery Inc. Gang in Scooby Doo. Barbara’s properties have seen numerous adaptations on Tv, Film and even Comic books, which now see’s DC about to bring some of our classic heroes into the modern day while retaining all the “Jinkies” and “Yabba-Dabba-Doo’s” of course.

In a story broken by Entertainment Weekly,  Co-publisher of DC Entertainment Dan DiDio outlined the vision that DC has for the Barbera comics:

“From a personal standpoint, I was always a fan of the old Hanna-Barbera characters, having grown up on them,” assured DiDio. “I think what you find right now is there’s so much material on pop culture, and these characters resonate with so much of our fanbase. It was so fun to go out and look at them, but not just bring back versions that existed 40, 50 years ago and really look at it the way of saying, if these characters were created and interpreted today, how would they exist?”

The headlining comic in DC’s slate will be Scooby Doo Apocalypse which gives the impression that the Mystery Inc. Gang will be dealing with more than vengeful Janitors and money-grabbing Hotel Owners. “I’m a huge Scooby Doo fan, as I think most people are,” reveals veteran artist Jim Lee whose work at DC has made him a household name. “All my kids know of Scooby Doo from the various cartoons and live action movies, and we’re in a period where you have people my age that are spending their days thinking about cartoon and sci-fi action movies. It’s a multigenerational obsession at this point, and we just thought it would just be really interesting to take the cartoon version of these characters and see where they would be if we took what existed in the very first iteration of the cartoon and moved it into this day and age.”

Other than the artwork revealed little is known about the comics other than the premises going forward. The Flintstones will remain largely unchanged when compared to Wacky Race Land that undoubtedly has been inspired by the success of last years Mad Max.

DC are even brining their long-history with superheroes into the fray with bringing together Barbera’s various superheroes under one banner. Future Quest will see superheroes like Johnny Quest, Space Ghost, the Herculoids, Birdman and the Galaxy Trio team up to stop various nefarious forces as a Justice League style super-team.

“You’re gonna have an epic adventure in the future stories with Jonny Quest and Space Ghost,” explains DiDio. “You’re going to have a scary, dangerous world in Wacky Raceland that is just as strange and dynamic as you hope it would be. I think Scooby Doo is going to excite people and challenge people, and I think that we’re going to use Flintstones to really bring out that voice and social commentary that they might’ve brought out in the ’60s and raise it back for today.”

Co-Publisher alongside DiDio, Lee just hopes that the new comics “put a smile on people’s faces. I think we think of these characters so much as our childhood, and I want people to kind of embrace these updated versions of the characters and really understand that at the core, these concepts are not just limited to little kids.” With DiDio promising that “when you see what’s going to happen with Scooby and Wacky Races, even if you were cynical about how we approached these things, you’re going to love everything once you see the finished product.”

‘Wonder Woman’ Will Squash Sexism With Humour

gal

In the new issue of Empire Magazine, it was revealed by Wonder Woman leading lady Gal Gardot, that her Diana Prince has experienced much in her life on the account that she is old, very old. Like crazy old.

The former Fast and Furious actress revealed that the 5,000 year old God finds it tough “because she’s seen it all, she has seen what humans can do, so it was very hard for her to come back and fight.”

In DC’s recent big reveal on the CW network. The new trailer for the first live-action Wonder Woman film showcased that a large percentage of the movie will unfold in front of the backdrop of World War I and the modern day.

Producer Deborah Snyder gave an insight into the decision to show a split time perspective in order to showcase the sexism that Diana would have experience across the ages. “Her sexuality is part of her power, but she is also a feminist icon,” explained Snyder. “Gender has been a hot topic, so it is very timely to bring her back.”

Snyder also imparted how the film will combat the rampant sexism through humour: “The way we have approached it, especially in the stand alone movie, that is definitely there. Looking back and doing an origin story – and it is a period piece – see the role of women through history. There is a great source of humour in that now. It is so unbelievable you can’t even fathom it. You are still making a statement, but having some fun with it.”

Gardot also gave an insight into dealing with Wonder Woman’s dual identity, explaining that “they have the same attitude. Although when she is Diana she tries to blend in, she is not too outgoing. I don’t want people to think she is perfect. She can be naughty.”

Wonder Women will be knocking heads together in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, which hits screens March 25. With her solo movie coming after in June 23, 2017.

‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2’ Starts Filming “In A Couple Of Weeks”

gogt2

How long has it been since we’ve seen those lovable rogues, that talking Racoon and a dancing living tree aboard the Milano? Seems like ages doesn’t it, but with Director James Gunn announcing via Twitter that production on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 begins “in a couple of weeks.” We might have to wait a little while yet but at least we have number of information just waiting to leak across the inter-web when shooting finally starts.

Talking of leaks, Gunn seemed to hold back on denying or rebutting spoilers this time around but he did confirm that the recent table read went well, expressing that “our returning cast is even better and our new cast is amazing.”

Gunn even revealed, in response to a fan question, that the post-credit scene had already been written, simply stating that it had been “scripted.”

He even confirmed that an official cast announcement “will be very soon”, meaning that we will get an answer to castings rumours regarding comic-book favourite Mantis.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 is currently scheduled for a May 5, 2017 release.
