‘Suicide Squad’ Synopsis Reveals Bad News For The Team

marggo.png

How could you not love these guys and gals – Skatronixxx

DC’s Suicide Squad is easily the most fascinating out of the comic book outlets upcoming cinematic offerings. Not only will we see the latest incarnation of The Joker (Jared Leto) since Heath Ledger’s scene stealing interpretation of the Clown Prince of Crime in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight (2008). The first live action appearance of The Joker fan-girl Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) and countless possibilities for further cross-over’s down the line. Not to mention the delectable opportunity to see Cara Delevinge’s The Enchantress crop out in Guillermo Del Toro’s upcoming Justice League Dark film. But we will ultimately see DC pull the trigger on releasing their vault full of iconic villains on an unsuspecting movie audience and see what they make of it.

Now tell me you aren’t excited to cheer for the bad guys for once? Well those bad guys may well steal your heart yet if Warner Bros. latest synopsis is anything to go by:

‘It feels good to be bad… Assemble a team of the world’s most dangerous, incarcerated supervillains, provide them with the most powerful arsenal at the government’s disposal, and send them off on a mission to defeat an enigmatic, insuperable entity.

US intelligence officer Amanda Waller has determined only a secretly convened group of desparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do.

However, once they realise they weren’t picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability when they inevitably fail, will the Suicide Squad resolve to die trying, or decide it’s every man for himself?’

With this in mind I guess the only question will be if any of the team will survive Director David Ayer’s (Training Day, Fury) film as the odds are certainly stack against them.

Suicide Squad will serve as the follow-up to the crown jewel in the franchise, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, when it lands in theatres August 5, 2016.

‘Saga’ The Comic Book Series

saga

Saga is a graphic novel series, written by Brian. K Vaughan and illustrated by Fiona Staples. It’s an epic fantasy, sci-fi tale, with 31 single issues published, five trade issues and a deluxe trade edition coming shortly.

And it is possibly the best graphic novel you will read.

Saga is a tale of Alana and Marco, two lovers who come from two different species who are currently at war. Alana met Marco whilst guarding him in a war camp, and soon after, freed him and ran away with him. And this tale begins, when Alanna gives birth to their daughter, Hazel – who is the narrator.

This might sound very Romeo & Juliet but let me promise you that it is anything but. Because their eloping and the birth of their child has caused a political outcry that’s spread far and wide – and now the whole universe is after the child who was not meant to exist.

A quick warning before I continue – this story is probably not recommendable for anyone under the age of 18. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not here to police what you read, but just be warned there is a lot of sex, a lot of nudity, and a lot of gore. It’s Game of Thrones in space up in here.

Saga is, first of all, a very unique premise. Sure, everyone has heard the “forbidden lovers” story multiple times, but the execution of the story is what makes it so original and special. These species are literally at war. And, to top it off, one of the species belongs to a satellite that used to orbit the planet of the other species. That’s damn intense.

The writing of this story is great. Hazel is a very blunt, honest narrator who doesn’t try and frame her parents and their mistakes (and boy, do they make a lot.) as excusable or okay. She’s very much a narrator who grew up aware of the war and the political implications of her birth, and she’s very blunt, frank and absolutely hilarious. And it’s very strange but refreshing to watch her narrate this story, when during the tale she is very much a tiny child that you watch grow up.

What I also love about this story, are the themes dealt with and the way in which they’re handled. Thus far, in the five trade issues I’ve read, we deal with child trafficking, prostitution, drugs, addiction, domestic violence, childbirth, sex (lots of it.), monsters, war, politics and love – and I imagine, so much more. The story also handles these issues with a lot of tact and a great moral compass – everything is handled bluntly, honestly, but with a lot of tact about it. The story knows how it needs to frame these issues, and that’s what makes it all the more engaging and exciting for me. I especially love that with this war, the two actual planets of the Waring species are entirely peaceful – but the rest of the galaxy has inserted itself into this war and keeps it thriving and new.

Character-wise, this story is a full cast of completely fascinating, well-thought out, complex persons who are all interesting. I don’t find a single character boring, even if I find their actions deplorable. They’re all well written with intense motives. Even the side characters are a delight to read about! Once again, Hazel’s narrative helps with framing a lot of them – Hazel, although knowing they were enemies of her parents, frames them as people who had their own issues, morals and instructions when chasing their goals. Even when they’re messed up, twisted and say downright messed up things, ultimately they are real and they do have emotions and ways you can sympathise with them. It’s honestly fantastic and refreshing.

Fiona Staples illustrations are also (no pun intended. Maybe.) out of this world. They’re so beautiful, sharp and well laid out. Every page is an absolute delight to read, with jaw-dropping scenery and characters who look so unique and suit the writing so, so much. I mean, look at this.

Look.

I can’t even emphasise enough how well done these illustrations are. They’re so unique and they fit the Saga world so perfectly.

That and Fiona won’t shy away from the grim and gore. Emphasis on grim.

Yes, that is a giant monster’s swollen, pus covered testicles. Staples sat down at a table, picked up the appropriate equipment, and created this. With the go ahead from Vaughan. And if everything else I listed isn’t reason enough to check this out, I think the pus covered genitals should do it.

On a serious note; Saga is without a doubt one of the best pieces of literature I’ve engrossed myself in over the past year. It’s got this incredible story that’s executed with stunning illustrations, gloriously written characters and a unique narrative. It’s got so much heart, so much emotion and just a tonne of really incredible ideas behind it, put together by two really imaginative and talented creators. It’s funny, it’s sharp and it’s deeply emotional.

So if you want to get into a new graphic novel series but not a clue where to start; start here. And brace yourself for one of the greatest journeys.

Fare thee well,

Fran

Netflix’s ‘Iron Fist’ Finds A Show Runner

ironfist

This show looks good – Skatronixxx

Iron Fist looks poised to join his cohorts on the mean streets of New York’s Hells Kitchen, as the Netflix/Marvel series gains a show runner.

An announcement this week via the streaming service, revealed that Steve Buck (Dexter, Rome & Six Feet Under) has jumped on board as show runner for the Iron Fist series. No information was given as to the release window for the next phase in Netflix’s superhero series but with the release of Daredevil season 2 and a Luke Cage series coming in 2016. It may be awhile before we see the martial artist realised on screen.

Currently fans have been introduced to Daredevil early this year with Jessica Jones having been realised late last month. Both shows carries a more mature tone reflecting the more street-level crimes that both heroes combat in Hells Kitchen, a stark contrast to more grandiose escapades of their Avengers counterparts.

Although unconfirmed it is believed that the series will air before the planned The Defenders mini series designed to bring together Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist together in a team-up series similar to a big-budget crossover event seen in Avengers Assemble and Age of Ultron. Details are scarce on the nature of the Iron Fist series but Netflix did release a synopsis along with their announcement that hinted towards the continued gritty tone established by its predecessors:

‘Returning to New York City after being missing for years, Daniel Rand fights against the criminal element corrupting New York City with his incredible Kung-Fu mastery and ability to summon the awesome power of the fiery Iron Fist.’

Iron Fist first appeared in the pages of Marvel in the 1970’s as a deliberate response to the popularity of Kung-Fu movies at the time. He was soon joined by partner in crime Luke Cage, whose dynamic duo team-up lasted for several years.

With Cage currently appearing in the Jessica Jones series, could we see Iron Fist make a cameo in Luke Cage before his own series debuts? I wait excitedly with flaming-fists a ready.

CBS’s Supergirl Gets An Ongoing Comic Book

supergirlcomic.png

Would you read a Supergirl comic? – Skatronixxx

My love for CBS’s Supergirl has been no secret. In fact, my comparison of its Pilot episode this can be read here http://goo.gl/Q9B3Yd) to one of my beloved series of all time, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, probably endears itself to my longing to see that show again. Nostalgia alert indeed.

I don’t seem alone however as Supergirl’s ground breaking debut records for a comic-book adaptation on Tv has been rewarded with a new digital first, ongoing comic book series. An article out of Bleeding cool brought attention to a listing on Amazon that revealed that the comic book series will tie “directly into” the show and will follow Supergirl, Kara Danvers (Melissa Benoist), and her growing team of supporters as they fight Alien threats to Earth and criminal mis-adventures.

The comic book series wont be the first Tv show tie-in based on a Greg Berlanti led show. The show runner has also seen his other hit superhero shows Arrow and The Flash gain comic book tie-ins that bridge the gaps between seasons and even feature prequel stories.

The submission on Amazon failed to reveal any story details but did indicate an early August 2016 release.

CBS has already ordered the show to full season which is strong indication that we will see a season 2 for Superman’s cousin. Now if only there could be a way to get Sarah Michelle Gellar on the show … make it so Internet.

‘Shawn Ashmore’ Would Be Open To Play Iceman As Gay

 Iceman

Would you be interested to see Iceman have a bigger character arc? I would – Skatronixxx

2015 proved a big year for the X-Men in comic books. Marvel went full tilt on changing the landscape of our favourite mutants world from killing main-stay Wolverine to pushing Mutants into a fight for survival (again) against the InHumans whose Terrigan Mist is proving lethal to our heroes.

Despite all this Marvel writers had time to lay out a delicately handled story that saw Iceman Bobby Drake reconcile with his sexuality and come out as gay. This turn of event came out of a story that saw a younger Iceman brought forward (alongside Jean Grey, Cyclops, Angel and Beast) into the present, where readers saw an interaction between himself and Jean Grey when she read his mind revealing that he was conflicted about his sexuality. In an issue that saw comic book writer legend Brian Michael Bendis end his current run on the All New X-Men. The present day Bobby Drake confined in his younger counterpart, that his courage gives him the strength to live his life as a gay man, which fans are able to follow in Marvel comics current run Extraordinary X-Men.

Speaking at the 2015 game awards to promote his new game/Tv tie in Quantum Break. Canadian actor Shawn Ashmore told IGN that he would be open to playing his role as Iceman in the Fox line of X-Men movies as gay: ‘Obviously the comics and movies are separate. Iwonder what the transition would be because we’ve sort of established Bobby as having a love interest in Rogue and having a love interest in sort of Kitty Pryde, but I think it’d be really interesting.’

The actor further expressed his desire to see future films handle the transition in storylines explaining: ‘I think it’d probably be the most interesting thing that could happen to Bobby in the films. If they decided to take the story that way, it’d be incredibly dramatic, it’d be an interesting storyline, and it would give Bobby a great character arc. I’d definitely be open to that, but again, I’m not sure if they want to take the character in that direction. I have no idea how they would play that out. I think it’d be very interesting.’

Ashmore also commented that he would like to branch out into other roles within the superhero genre suggesting that ‘I think at a certain point you can be saturated as an actor if you’re playing too many [comic book] characters, but there’s been some really successful people that have done multiple comic book characters, so I’d definitely be open to that, but I think it would have to be the right fit, you know? Especially because I’ve played Iceman for 12 years at this point. I feel like you sort of live in that skin, so would have to be something just perfect to branch out into.’

Although I would be excited to see Ahsmore take Iceman in a different direction, considering that I am neither a fan of the Rogue or Kitty relationships portrayed in the films, but thats for another article. I feel, like many fans, that the original cast of the first trilogy is probably done. Especially considering that they all received a happy ending at X-Men: Days of Future Past end.

That being said, with Hugh Jackman constantly returning time and again as Wolverine. Maybe its a matter of time before the Iceman cometh once again.

Tom Holland’s ‘Spider-Man’ WILL Appear In ‘Captain America: Civil War’

tomholland.png

Yes Spider-Man you shall goto the ball, oops I mean you can be in this film – Skatronixxx

It has long been speculated since it was revealed earlier this year that the Sony owned property, Spider-Man, would be lent-out to Marvel Studios for an unspecific amount of films. Whether or not the friendly-neighbourhood superhero would appear in the upcoming Captain America: Civil War. When considered that the young crime fighter played a pivotal role in the crossover event in the comics, it seemed kismet that the character should return home to Marvel just in time for an appearance in the film. Although all the right elements alined for this to be possible it wasn’t a guarantee given that a debuting Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) seemed positioned to fill the Spidey-shaped void.

Our worries seem premature however with Iron Man himself, Robert Downey Jr, confirming to Entertainment Weekly that the web-slinger will indeed make his debut into the MCU when Civil War appears in theatres. ‘[Don] Cheadle and I are just going, ‘Wow, dude, look at this.’ We’re now like the old guard, and our storyline carries real weight just because of our history in the [canon]. But we’re also looking around like, “who thought that Falcon and Black Panther and Ant-Man and now Spider-Man…?’ I mean it’s like wow, this thing is just crazy.” ‘

First no one wants you, now everyone wants you, whose sie will you choose Spidey? – Skatronixxx

Although Spider-Mans absence from the recently released Civil War trailer was felt by fans. The third actor to step into the web-clad tights, Tom Holland. Revealed to SuperHeroHype how his web-head will fit into the cinematic war: ‘I think one of the most interesting things about Peter Parker for us is that he’s the only person in the MCU now that has a secret identity. I think it’s quite interesting to go back to that hiding behind a mask.’

Naturally the British actor remains tight-lipped on specifics surrounding his character but it is interesting that Holland references that Peter Parkers identity is the one of the very few superheroes that remains a secret to the public. This is of particular note given that Peter in the comics reveals his secret identity to the world at Tony Starks behest, in order to gain favour with the public for his pro superhero-registration act that causes a rift between himself and Steve Rogers. This of course has been a talking point amongst fans as to whether Spider-Man will indeed be unmasked in the movie adaptation but this seems unlikely given Holland’s solo Spider-Man film that goes into production some time next year.

In the meantime, Holland shared his experience working alongside Downey and praised the cast involved: “I guess they’re such easy people. Robert [Downey Jr.] did my first screen test. He took me aside and gave me a little advice about the audition.”

Captain America: Civil War opens in theatres across the UK on April 29, 2016 with the US getting it a few days later on May 6.

‘The Legends Of Tomorrow’ Is Coming To Sky1

lot

Legends Of Tomorrow is coming to UK tv are you psyched? I am – Skatronixxx

After acquiring CBS’s super-popular Supergirl in September, British channel Sky has secured the rights to air DC’s latest superhero show The Legends of Tomorrow in the new year.

Sky1’s director Adam McDonald, announced the move to buy the show: ‘Hot on the heels of the amazing success of Supergirl, I’m really pleased to announce that another exciting comic book drama is coming to the channel.’

‘From the team behind our three best-loved superhero shows and with a great high-profile cast, there’s real pedigree behind DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. And it’s set in the same world as The Flash and Arrow, too, so it couldn’t be more suited to Sky 1. Our customers are going to love it.’

For British fans this shouldn’t come as much of surprise, even though McDonald preference the move to buy the show given the success of Supergirl on both sides of the pond. The fact that the channel currently airs both Arrow and The Flash is an indicator that Sky1 recognises how closely associated all three shows will be going forward.

British fans will also rejoice at the return of Doctor Who alumni Arthur Davrill who on this go-around will command time and space himself as time-traveler Rip Hunter. Joining him in his quest to stop comic-book villain Vandal Savage (Casper Crump) will be an eclectic bunch of new and old faces including Arrow fan favourites White Canary (Caity Lotz) and The Atom (Brandon Routh), with The Flash nemeses Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller) and Heatwave (Dominic Purcell) representing the fastest man alive universe. Comic-book fans will also get to see the debut of Hawkman (Falk Hentschal) and Hawkgirl (Ciara Renee) while both Victor Garber and Franz Drameh will reprise their roles as two parts that make the superhero entity known as Firestorm.

An airdate for British viewers is still unknown but for American fans the show is scheduled to air on the CW on January 21, 2016.

Captain America: Civil War Trailer Drops

civilwar

Whose side are you on? – Skatronixxx

Marvel fans around the world took note today as the first trailer for the much anticipated Captain America: Civil War dropped giving some much needed answers to geek-dom questions everywhere.

Since Marvel revealed that they would be adapting the story from one of their more successful crossover events from the comics. Questions regarding how closely they would stick to the source material have dominated the discussion.

From what we saw of the trailer it appears that Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) friendship with the Winter Soldier, Bucky Barns (Sebastian Stan), kickstarts the debate of superhero registration that puts Capt and his New Avengers firmly in the crosshairs of Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) and the rest of the Government officials hell bent on bringing down the Winter Soldier.

For a movie considered a cross-over event in the same vein as The Avengers. The trailer suggests a more focus story following on from the events of The Winter Soldier that saw the fall of SHIELD and apparent death of Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) at the hands of Hydra and brainwashed Bucky Barns. With Rogers standing by his best friend it appears that the resurrected SHIELD will go to any lengths to get their man, seemingly holding Barns responsible for their implosion and Capt as the obstacle in their way.

In case you haven’t seen it ENJOY – Skatronixxx

With both Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) and the new Spider-Man (Tom Holland) making their debut in the film. It is still unknown what capacity the two will play in the overall story with Peter Parker proving a bigger mystery given that the character proves vital in the comic book story.

Expect more information to be revealed before May 6, 2016 when the film is released in theatres.

After numerous scoops and set photo leaks, Marvel has finally officially confirmed the identity of their cast for Doctor Strange even though we still don’t know who the bloody hell they will be playing. In an announcement via marvel.com, the superhero juggernauts gave an official synopsis that looks to up the quirk-factor set by those pesky Guardians of the Galaxy. ‘Doctor Strange follows the story of neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a horrific car accident, discovers the hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions.’

The titular character will of course be played by everyones favourite Sherlock Holmes, Benedict Cumberbatch, who will look to bring his horde of Cumber-bitches to Marvel as he casts a spell over the cinematic universe. He will be joined in his inter-dimensional escapades by Rachel McAdams, Tilda Swinton and Michael Stuhlbarg. As they look to take down 12 Years A Slave’s Chiwetel Ejiofor as he steps into the role of the villainous Baron Mordo.

Guardians Of The Galaxy Director Debunks Rumours Of Star-Lord’s Father

gog

Who’s Star-Lord’s father? – Skatronixxx

Director of Marvel’s quirky smash-hit Guardians of the Galaxy James Gun, took to Facebook to quash rumours surrounding his leading man’s parentage: ‘The rumours surrounding Quill’s parentage at the present moment are completely false, and aren’t even close to the truth.’ The directors outburst was in response to reports regarding the identity of Star-Lord Peter Quill’s father, a purported major player in the sequel planned for release in May 2017.

Original reports regarding the identity of Quills father alleged that the original Captain Marvel, also known as Mar-Vell, would have been revealed to be everyones favourite scoundrels dad. Created by Stan Lee and Gene Colan in 1967, Mar-Vell was an intergalactic spy for the Kree Empire sent to Earth to identify our weaknesses for an eventual invasion. The soldier would eventually become turncoat for Earth after falling in love with his new home becoming a champion of the people and even joining The Avengers.

With rumours detailing that Mar-Vell would play a key role in Guardians 2, Gun took umbrage with the statement explaining that ‘We’re creating a film that doesn’t rely on plot twists to be an enjoyable experience. They’re only a very small part of what we’re cooking up for you.’

Could we be seeing Mar-Vell in Guardians 2 ? – Skatronixxx

The now debunked rumour also alluded that this was the role that Oscar Winner Matthew McConaughey recently turned down, with some outlets reporting that Marvel had offered the Interstellar star a villainous role for his Marvel debut.

With Gun officially taking Mar-Vell off the table for discussion. It does beg the question of who possibly could be the Star-Lord’s daddy. With information imparted to Quill by the Nova-Corps in Guardians 1 that he does possess Alien DNA. Chances are the wayward father wont be found on Earth … or will he?

Sound off on Twitter Guardians fans. Who is Star-Lords Daddy? And as always, stick with @mitch_rated only on
