Doctor Who: Are The Sea Devils Returning?

p01bm51b

If there’s one thing the 2005 revival of Doctor Who has done well, it’s modernising monsters from the show’s past for a 21st century audience. And it looks like the Doctor Who team are about to do it again, if recent rumours regarding the return of the Sea Devils are true.

According to The Sun, the show’s production crew visited Iain McKellar of the shop Just Seaweed, located in Rothesay, the Isle of Bute. Iain McKellar told the newspaper “I was amazed to receive the first order. Then I got a panicky call the next day from them saying, ‘Can we have some more and can we get it ASAP as we’re filming tomorrow,”.

The second Doctor was menaced by an evil Seaweed creature in 1968’s Fury From The Deep, however it seems incredibly unlikely that Steven Moffat is planning to bring back the seaweed creature anytime soon. Seaweed was also used by the Sea Devils to cover their rock base in 1984’s Warriors of the Deep.

The Sea Devils first appeared in the iconic Jon Pertwee serial The Sea Devils and given that they are the aquatic cousins of the Silurians (who have already been reintroduced to modern audiences), it wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see them return – especially when they have already made an appearance in Titan Comics‘ Twelfth Doctor series.

Personally, I hope if the Sea Devils do return it is in a form similar to their comic design. The Titan Comics Sea Devil is a very faithful redesign in my opinion; they are instantly recognisable as Sea Devils but at the same time display more of a modern aesthetic.

Doctor Who returns to our screens with a Christmas Special (The Return of Doctor Mysterio) on Christmas Day. Series 10 will then follow in April.

Welcome Back!

When we last left our friends, they were trudging through the dangerous Swamp, when one of the Sows finds himself about to be sucked in to a whirlpool….

“OOOOOOEEEEEEEOOOOOOO”

Ian and the other Sows rush over to the screams, only to find the whirlpool, and no Sow. “What is it, what’s happened to Edian?” Asks another concerned Sow. Ian picks up a clipboard from the ground, “There is nothing we can do.” He replies, with a look of sadness on his face. The others look on at the whirlpool. Ian and Barbara go back to camp.

“Did Edian fall in?’ Asked the one Sow. “What happened?” “He must have fallen in very quickly.” Responded a different Sow. “Come on now, we must reach the cliffs by tonight.” He assures the first Sow. They both stand and go back to camp.

Back in a different part of the swamp, the Doctor, Susan, female Sow and Aladon are hovering by a rock, creating a plan to get into the village where the Daleks dwell. “We have speed on our side,” announces Susan, as they discuss how to disarm the cameras throughout the city. “I wish we knew what they have planned for us.” States Aladon, worried.

Back in the city. “The report for the neutrobomb is repaired.” States the first Dalek, as he rolls to the second. “Let us hear it.” States the second. “Report of neutrobomb to cover 500 square miles. Time to construct: 23 days.” Announces the computer “Is that the quickest way?” Asks the second Dalek. “Yes” confirms the computer. “Very well, is to long. We must abandon the idea of a neutron bomb. We must find another way of spreading radiation.” States the first Dalek.

The cave is dark, Barbara and a Genetis are wondering through it, trying to find a way to the city. Barbara slips on a rock, the cave ground is uneven. They continue forward until they reach a dead end. “Well lets go back and try one of the other ways.” State Genitis. “No wait, listen.” Starts Barbara. They are quiet for a moment. “It sounds like, water!” she continues. They follow the sound of the water, only to find a small passageway in the wall. They figure the opening way won’t be easy to get through. Genitis decides to be the one to venture in first. Tying a rope around his waist so Barbara can hold onto the other end. Genitis finds a drop about 30 ft down, He continues on. Back at the beginning of the hole, Barbara braises the rope for the Genitis but as she tries to hold his weight, the rope slips out of her grasp, causing her to fall back and Genitis to fall down the hole. Ian hears the cries from Barbara and rushes to the sounds. “What happened, where is Genitis.” Ian demands concerned. “I couldn’t hold on to him, it slipped out of my fingers.” She states worried for her friend. They both rush to the whole, Ian calls down, “Genitis are you ok?” “Yes I am alright.” Genitis responds, a little shaken. The other Sows rush in to the cave where Barbara and Ian are. “What happened? Where is Genitis?’ Asks a worried Sow. Barbara explains to the others what had happened. “We are sending another rope down to you.” Ian calls down to Genitis. “It would be better if you came down to,” Starts Genitis, “there are several caves down here, we may have a better chance of getting through.” He continues. Ian decides this is a good idea and calls down to the Sow that he will be joining shortly.

Back in the city, “The reader is recording movement from the Sow people.” starts the one Dalek, “Is there images?” Asks the second Dalek “No reception is bad.” Explains the first. They figure that the Sows are attacking the instruments and are on high alert at this point.

The Sows are on a hill, reflecting light from the sun, off shiny metal objects, and into the sight of the scope that the Daleks use to spy on the people. “Looks like my plan has worked!” State the Doctor proudly. “But its risky.” States Susan. The Doctor knows the risks but continues with the plan regardless. Aladon shows the Doctor the map and the way they are to enter the city. The Doctor confirms the plan and Susan and Aladon continue on with their part of the quest. “Yes, we’ll show them a thing or two.” States the Doctor with a sly smile on his face.

Back in the cave, Ian, Genitis and the others are walking through one of the cave openings. They path is rocky. One of the Sows halts and asks for Genitis. “I want to go back.” He states. “Why?” Asks Genitis. The other Sow explains his worries. He is afraid that if they continue on then they may get stuck in the cave, or the fact that they don’t stand a chance against the Daleks (wow he is a whiner) “We will continue on together.” States Genitis. “Why do you make me do these things?” Asks the scared Sow. “They are going to die anyway, we can go back and tell the others that the Daleks killed them.” “Oh what are you talking about, we must go back.” Demands Genitis. “I am not going back” Declines the Sow. There is a struggle between the two men; they wrestle to the ground when Genitis head buts the younger scared Sow. (That’s what you get for being a wuss) “Are you ok?” Asks a concerned Genitis to the fallen Sow. Suddenly some rocks fall from the cave walls. Genitis calls out for help. Ian rushes over and helps the Sows out of the way just before the rest of the rocks fall. The cave opening is now blocked. “What happened?” Asked Ian concerned. “One of the rocks fell and his him in the head, almost hit me too.” Lied Genitis. The others look back at the fallen rocks, realizing there is nowhere else to go but further into the cave if they wish to find a way out.

Back in the city. “Emergency, emergency! Reaction of the vibrascopes!” The Daleks have figured out what the heroes are doing to the scopes. They devise a plan to track the heroes by their vibrations and take them by surprise.

Susan runs up to a panel on a stonewall. She looks around, then calls out to the Doctor. “Is this what you want?” “Yes this must be the power that leads to the city.” The Doctor states and begins to smash the control box; they figure they need to find a way to cut the wires that are left. “We need to go tell the others to stop flashing the antennas, for all we know the Daleks may have figured it out by now and are on their way to kill them.’ Starts the Doctor. ‘But I can’t leave you all here.” States a worried Aladon. The Doctor reassures their friend that they will be all right, but there is no time to waist and he must return back to the others on the hill. “Very well, but don’t waist time here. I will come back for you.” Assures Aladon. “Yes, yes, yes. Now go on.” Rushes the Doctor. Aladon runs off. “Now I will tell you what we can do. We will short-circuit it. Do you have the key to the ship?” the Doctor asks Susan. She hands the key over to the Doctor who then intertwines the metal key among the wires to corrupt the signal. “There that will teach the Daleks, and make it our best.” The Doctor confirms triumphantly, Susan giggles. “But what about this one?” Susan points to another circuit just above the box. “Of course!” The Doctor replies, then lifting his cane, smashes the plates on the box. He then shoves a rod in the panel, shorting out the signals. Susan is now worried that they have created too much noise. “We need to leave now.” She states worried. “But child don’t you see what I have done?” Just as the Doctor is about to explain further, they realize that they have some unwelcome company. The Daleks have found them.

Back in the cave, Barbara almost falls but is caught by Genitis. “This is not the place for a quiet stroll is it?” Ian jokes. They figure to rest for a moment and find a way out. Genitis and Ian stop at the edge of a cliff. Using a flashlight, they look out to see what path is the best for their journey. After some planning Ian figures that they will need to jump off the cliff to venture forth. Though the jump may be a little dangerous, it’s the only way they have. Genitis goes back to the others and tells them of the plan to jump off the cliff. Ian ties the rope round his waist, deciding to be the first one to make the jump. He runs back, then charges forward, and with a mighty leap, bounds out to the other side of the cave. He makes it safely. “Alright, Genitis, you make the way next.” Genitis throws another rope to Ian, and ties the other half to his waist. He then makes a run and leaps to the side with Ian. The two now carefully scale the wall, trying to make their way through. Genitis wonders around the side and finds a tunnel that they can all get through. Ian then calls for the others to join them.

Back in the city, Susan and the Doctor are prisoners again of the Daleks. “You have destroyed are intruments.” Accuses the first Dalek, “And you in-turn killed the Sows in an ambush during the trade.” Responds the Doctor. “And you will be responsible for more deaths unless you help these people.” Continues the Doctor angrily. “The only interest we have in the sows is total extermination.” Informs the Dalek. “What do you mean?’ Asks Susan. “Tomorrow all the sows will be bombarded from radiation by our nuclear reactors.” States the Dalek. Susan looks at the doctor with fear in her eyes. “That’s shear murder.” State the Doctor. “No, extermination.” Confirms the Dalek. The Doctor tries to reason with the Daleks, but is shut down. The Daleks inform the Heroes that they need the radiation to survive, and tomorrow is judgment day.

Back in the cave, Barbara is the next to leap off the cliff. She makes it safely to Ian. She then continues around the bend of the cave but is going about it the wrong way. Ian helps her through guiding her slowly so she does not fall. Barbara is having a hard time but makes it in. The next Sow then makes his way across, leaving the scared Sow from earlier to be the last to cross. After the other Sow makes it across and onward safely. Ian throws the rope to the last Sow. The Sow is too afraid to cross, but Ian continues to guide him. The Sow is scared, but reluctantly obeys the commands of Ian. The Sow moves back from the edge, then rushes forward and jumps…and does not make it, but instead falls down the cave, “Help me! Help me! I can’t hold on! I can’t hold on!” Cries the fallen Sow. Ian is at the top, struggling to grasp the wall.

Supernatural SN 12 E7 – Rock Never Dies

spn-rock

There was so much awesome in this episode that I don’t know where to start.

Hmm.  How about with Dean playing Words With Friends with Mama Winchester.  That’s worth several “aww’s” right there.  Was way great that she was kicking his ass too.

Okay, moving on to the case this week.  As you probably recall Rowena sent Lucifer to the bottom of the ocean a few episodes back … Go Ro!!  So, this week some stupid idiots decide to summon him, using an incantation they found on the internet and a fossilized feather that is supposedly from Lucifer’s wing.  Well, bad luck for them that the feather was real and they were in the first 5 minutes of Supernatural.  Lucifer showed up and used the feather to restore his vessel, Rock God Vince Vincente.  Oh, did I forget to mention that he kills said idiots, too?  Oh, my bad.

Crowley and Cas have been keeping an eye on the whole Vince Vincente situation and call Sam and Dean to let them know that LadyHeart (Vince’s band) have been signed to a major label and is making a comeback.  I love that Crowley “knows a guy” and seems to come up with all the intel they need for this case … that is until the very end when Tommy (remember him? He’s the guy that Vince/Lucifer threw down the hallway when Lucifer first started wearing the rock star) texts Cas with the location of the ‘secret concert’.

This episode was a little chopped up and our heroes seemed to do a whole lot of sitting around in a hotel lobby.  But, Cas yelling “Hey Assbutt” at Lucifer again made it all worthwhile.

The scene in the limo with Kadeem Hardison (better known as Dewayne Wayne from A Different World) was so great that it prompted a text from DJ … “I knew it!!! The Devil invented bad puns!!!”  And, DJ was as bummed as I was to realize that we’d seen the last of Rick Springfield on The Show.  I was getting used to him as Lucifer.  And, come on, that song (Bloody Messiah) that they created for this episode was great with Rick singing it … it added a little authenticity to the whole Lucifer as a Rock Star thing.

There was this great shot when Lucifer is giving his “Daddy abandoned me” speech on stage, ya know, where he’s wasting away right before our eyes … anyway, the camera is on Dean and Sam and the light peeking through the doors behind them form a cross… it’s a beautiful shot and makes for some great symbolism… ya know, if you’re looking for that sort of $h!t.  And, I do .. so there ya go.

The post fight discussion between our heroes really got me.  Dean is all “we’re winning” and Sam is like “No, we’re losing slow”.  That’s meaningful given that their attitudes are reversed.  Sam is usually the ray of sunshine, and Dean is all doomy.  I mean, cmon … they’re not the Losechesters. (it’s okay to laugh at that, I meant for you to).

Next week is the mid-season finale … and I don’t know if I’m happy or sad.  I mean, ya know, cause on the one hand it means we’re in for some major emotional compromising … but then on the other hand it’s the last new episode for so long the withdrawals may kill me.  It’s an emotional toss up.  Really.  Don’t judge me!

Either way, here’s a look at next week’s episode …

Daredevil Ep. 22 “Seven Minutes in Heaven” Review

daredevil-12

How does Daredevil follow up a great action light episode? With a great action-heavy episode.

This episode begins with an okay scene about Matt and Foggy confronting each other about the dissolution of their friendship and law firm. With the direction this season has been going, I was concerned this tone would carry out through the rest of the episode. Luckily, it was only this scene – which is a tolerable dose of the melodrama. Plus it is a good examination of how Murdock views his dual life. There is also a B-plot about Karen investigating the Castle case further. This is okay but nothing special – it is good that this stuff is used so the viewer is not too overwelmed by action, but onto the good stuff.

Murdock spends most of the episode as Daredevil. There is some suspence as he interrogates his way through the Hand by way of accountants. Without going too far off the rails, Daredevil shows his intensity in intimidating villains. This episode features some pretty intense and brutal fight scenes. Fights are fast-paced and well-edited – including a rematch from the fighter who pushed Daredevil to his limits in season 1’s “Speak of the Devil.” Even after everything he has learned, Daredevil still gets tested in this battle.

Roughly half the episode is spent with the Punisher meeting Kingpin in prison. It should be no surprise that a meeting between two of the best things in the series is a highlight. Just the opening scenes of these two meeting and talking carries so much intensity with the strong personalities both men have. Even in the grey bar motel, Fisk has amassed some power. However, there is someone who’s managed to be higher on the food chain and he had a hand in murdering Castle’s family. Fisk pulls some strings and a deal is made.

The scenes where Castle confronts this man are pretty good with Castle showing just how menacing he can be with just a knife. There’s a pretty brutal fight where Castle fends off three inmates by himself. Following this is a scene where a wounded Punisher confronts Fisk. Fisk still manhandles Castle – wounded Castle may be, but we still see how brutal and unapologetic Fisk can be.

The episode ends with a chilling double cliffhanger as Daredevil learns his former assailant is not only not dead but claims death doesn’t exist for him. Secondly, the Punisher – thanks to Fisk – is escaping jail among a riot squad. Overall this is a great episode with exciting action and enough drama and story to keep the overall story arc going.

Eddie Redmayne wants to be Doctor Who

Of all the roles in the Fandom universe, I feel that the Doctor Who role is one that is highly desired, or at least one that causes a great squeal when we hear that a fave actor wants to play this part.

Eddie Redmayne, known for his roles in the Theory of Everything, Les Miserables and who currently plays Newt Scamander in the Fantastic Beasts and where to find them movie, has put it out there that he would be interested in playing the next Doctor…

“Would I do it? Yeah! It’s a great show. I do see the resemblance. I see the scarf, I see the coat, I see the bowtie…. I’m also a huge fan of those actors, I love Matt Smith. I suppose the briefcase has a TARDIS vibe to it- so yeah!!”

Apparently there is a campaign online done by fans pushing for this to happen. Knowing that next year may be Peter Capaldi’s last season as the Doctor, there is a movement started on Twitter by fans called #CampainForRedmayne. How awesome is that? Honestly he looks like a great candidate for the next Doctor, and his wide range of acting skills proves the man knows his stuff. ^_^

Have “Spider-Man: Homecoming” Images Been Leaked from the Upcoming Teaser Trailer?

Whilst the first trailer for Spider-Man: Homecoming wasn’t anticipated to arrive until Friday (strictly to lucky Brazilian fans), it looks like Marvel and Sony may have to really batten down the hatches on this one, as supposed images from the teaser have leaked online.

leaked2

An Instagram account has posted these low-res images; they look legit enough, though plenty of faked Marvel posters and trailers have built up a tonne of hype before being outted as fakes, so there’s no true way to know until Marvel and Sony release the actual trailer.

leaked3

The leaked photos seem to be of Peter Parker (Tom Holland – In The Heart of the Sea, The Impossible, Captain America: Civil War) in front of a green background (a chalkboard?) and through high school corridors – and then of course, an image of Spider-Man himself, and beside him is a very bright blue light; Electro?

leaked1

Whether these are real or fake, we can all live in the knowledge that a HD release of the trailer isn’t much further away, as the trailer is reportedly going to be attached to the release of Star Wars: Rogue One when it releases in cinemas.

leaked4

Spider-Man: Homecoming is scheduled for release on July 7th 2017.

All About Moana

Disney is successful once again with their Thanksgiving debuts with their newest box office hit, “Moana“! It grossed over $56 million on their opening weekend and is now at $104 million lifetime worldwide with expectations to reclaim the top spot again this weekend.  Although the movie fell short of the $85 million expected in their 5 day debut in comparison to the $93 million “Frozen” brought in 2013, “Moana” in 3D was exceptional!
Although the movie is named after the main character, “Moana” (voice of Auli’i Cravalho) which means, “ocean” in Hawaiian, the movie was not focused on the island state at all. It actually incorporated pieces of different cultural heritages to create it’s own fantasy world following the Disney style. It has always been my fear, from past experiences, that when movies take on a cultural theme that a few things happen which disappoints and loses viewers: 1. Many times the cultural vocabulary chosen for a film are usually too difficult for anyone to pronounce or even remember, but this did NOT happen here! The creators did a great job by using identifiers like “Grandma” to precede the simple name “Tala”. In addition, they selected names that seemed fun for a child to say like, “Tui” or “Tamatoa”.  2. It has happened more than a handful of times that when a film takes on a specific cultural theme, it is not interpreted correctly and/or out right offends the viewers of that specific ethnicity. That did not happen here! Awesome job of being culturally sensitive and setting the tone early on that this is a Fantasy world as you will see while watching this in 3D.

As the movie opens, the audience is introduced to an adorable toddler “Moana” being playful and very comfortable near the ocean. The scenery invites the viewer into her world with such a real feeling through 3D.  The “honu” (in Hawaiian) or “sea turtle” that will glide past you and baby “Moana” will be the treat that pulls you into the movie and keeps you there until the end! The animation was excellent and the musical numbers are fun and balanced with the movie’s pace where the audience would not be subjected to listening to a thousand songs. A few musical numbers with a strong message added value to the film.
Now for the storyline. The journey you will take with Disney’s heroine is one of empowerment. As you see her grow and develop from a child to a strong leader. “Moana” is born a chief’s daughter and is expected to take over as a leader of her village one day. Our main character struggles with doing what is expected of her versus what she feels is the right thing to do. In the eyes of her parents and the villagers, she is expected to stay on the island, place her rock at the top of the mountain, and assume her role as their leader.  However, the island begins to face challenges of famine and natural destructions which she learns from both the ocean and her grandmother “Tala” (Voice of Rachel House) that they are cursed because of what the demi-god “Maui” (voice of Dwayne Johnson) did many years ago.  He stole the “Heart of Te fiti”.  She expresses her ideas of how she would handle the problems by leaving the island to her father, but he dismissed it as just her excuse to satisfy her longing to sail on the ocean.  “Moana” exhibits the typical growing pains all teenagers face as she challenges her parents. She then runs off following her own passion to be faced by a tough, cruel, and unforgiving world on her own.

Although “Moana” does team up with “Maui” the journey is all her own! She demands him to take back the “heart of Te fiti” to make things right so her village can thrive and survive again. In the end, the audience realizes that the strong, handsome, charismatic demi-god “Maui”(voice of Dwayne Johnson) is like many of the men young women will come across in life who will steal their heart like he did to Te fiti.

However, the lesson learned is that with other strong women to support her, like “Moana”, the beast that Te fiti became without her heart can still be softened with a simple apology from the one who turned her into the mean beast by the charismatic “Maui” (voice of Dwayne Johnson) stealing her heart.
The subtle messages in this story that is being spoken to the subconscious minds of all young little girls are positive and strong. All daddys need to take their little girls to see this movie! The struggles that “Moana” face are real to life for all, from identifying who they are, what is expected of them, and how to be confident in the decisions they will make in life.

I believe this movie is one to own.  The story hits the heart of us all and inspires our young.

My assessment of this film is a no brainer, “MUST SEE”! This is Loyal Bloodline, blogging for skatronixxx.com “Your friendly neighborhood nerds”. You can learn more about us and our clothing line at Loyal Bloodline Clothing.

Once Upon a Time SN6 E9 – Changelings

ouat-rumple

This episode has been a long time coming.  I mean, really.  We’ve been waiting for Rumple to show us some Dark One Backbone.  I was getting a tiny bit tired of his whining and the occasional make-out sessions with the Evil Queen.  I wanted to see the Rumple from Seasons 1 – 3.  And, finally, they gave him to us!

With this episode we learned a few things … Rumple still has the magic to age people, that dried squid ink will immobilize The Dark One (and other magical beings) …. oh, AND that Rumple’s mother is The Black Fairy!

Rumple wanted to use the magic dust on Belle to speed up her pregnancy so that he could use the shears on his son.  What do you mean ‘what shears’?  The Shears of Destiny, shears!  The ones that Aladdin gave to Emma.  Okay, now that everyone is all caught up… moving on.  He wanted to change his son’s destiny, so that he wouldn’t hate Rumple (his dear old dad… or is that Dearie Old Dad?)  When he managed to get Captain Swan temporarily out of the picture and went after Belle, she managed to talk him out of using the dust.  But, by backing down, he ticked off the Evil Queen (I think I just wanna call her EQ from now on… it has a nice ring to it).  EQ realized that her revenge meant nothing to Rumple … I can’t believe she was surprised by that.  Anyway, so Granny offers Belle a cup of tea at the diner, and boom!  Belle’s belly blows up like a big balloon and baby Morpheus (or whatever they’re going to call him) was on his way.

I, for one, was not surprised to learn that Rumple didn’t spike the tea…. EQ did.

Now, let’s talk about what else was going on in this episode.  Rumple sent the EQ to kill Zelena, because you know, she went against him and helped Belle.  EQ was gonna do it too, but Regina showed up and saved the day.  When Zelena realized that Regina was still blaming her for the loss of Robin (aren’t we all?), she asked why Regina saved her.  I loved Regina’s answer … “Because that’s what heroes do, Zelena”.

And, oh yeah, Aladdin put on the Genie bracelets so that Jasmine could wish to find Agrabah.  We all saw the movie, right?  We ALL know this can’t end well, right?  Okay, just checking…. moving on.

The next episode is the Winter Finale!  I’m soooooo ready, are you?
