An Interview With The Voice Of Gorilla Grodd, David Sobolov

ds.png

David and his alter ego Grodd

Wow two days, two intervies, what are the odds? Someone who I really to interview was one of my verified followers the voice over legend that is David Sobolov. His resume reads like a who’s who of the cartoon world, Shockwave, Robocop, Drax, Gorilla Grodd.

Not only do I regularly watch most of these shows, the characters that David voices are my fave too, so when the oppertunity came for an interview with David, I could not pass up the chance.

As you know I get chatting to the people I do interviews with before I do them, and David is a down to earth guy who actually looks at this site  (and has given me feedback on it!) woop woop.

Let’s find out more about another awesomely talented member of the #SkatFamily David.

————————————————————————————————————————————————–

1) How did you get into voiceover acting?

Around 1993 I was working doing stage shows and singing in Vancouver and an agent heard my voice and thought I’d be good for villains in cartoons.  I started going out for auditions and booking a few jobs and I was on my way.

2) You were in The Flash as Gorilla Grodd, how did you find this experience and have we seen the last of Grodd?

I really enjoy being the voice of Grodd.  The producers of The Flash really want the show to be great and we spend a lot of time trying out different ways for Grodd to express himself.  The creative team decides which take to use for each line, then we meet again to go over the choices and to try to make it even better.  I hope we haven’t seen the last of Grodd, but I can’t say for sure!

David you’re looking rather hairy here!

3) You also voiced Drax in the cartoon version of ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ and Stone in Netlfix’sDaredevil’, do you have any interesting stories to share with us from your time on these shows?

When I worked on Daredevil, the character was so secret that they wouldn’t even tell me the name of it while we were working!  And on Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, we’re really having a fun time recording all the episodes.  We’ve recorded 30 of them so far!

Skatronixxx Jr loves this show 🙂

4) You’ve been in DC and Marvel shows, I have to ask are you Team Marvel or Team DC, or both?

How could I not be on both teams?  I have current shows running for both Marvel and DC.

5) If you could be in one existing film, what film and character would you choose and why?

Batman… If Kevin Conroy ever retires.

6) I read online that you are a French horn player, and toured in an acapella group, what was that like and do you still play/sing today?

That was a long time ago… I still sing on occasion.  My first animated series, Vor-Tech in 1995 let me know I was cast during a tour of our a cappella group in a remote area in Northern British Columbia, Canada.  I had to pay out the salaries of all the singers for the week and hire a private plane to pick me up in a little airstrip in the forest.  It was worth it.  I’d like to do more singing.  The last time I played my horn was in the pit orchestra for a production West Side Story in 1995.  I finished the last show and never played again.

7) Some experienced gamers will know your name from such popular games as Halo, Mass Effect and Unchartered, how different is it providing voices to games rather than shows?

You continue to hear my voice on episodes of The Flash as Grodd, and in the first season of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy animated series as Drax.  I have been working on several video game project and a whole new animated series, but I’m not at liberty to discuss those yet.

SMXLL

The many characters of David, how many can you spot?

8) Tell our readers one fun fact about yourself that they may not already know?

I collect antique product packaging from the 1880s through 1960s… you’ll find unusual items like a 1943 box of Ritz Crackers and a 1952 box of Tide Detergent.  I started when I was 10 years old and never became bored with it.

9) Finally what advice would you have for an upcoming voiceover actress or actor?

My advice for anyone starting out is to make sure you have a way to make a living that has nothing to do with acting while you’re pursuing your dream.  Don’t let anyone squish your dreams, but also don’t end up not eating because of them.  Also… learn about ACTING, not just doing funny voices.  We have to both believe you and understand the story you’re trying to tell.  To me, a character voice that doesn’t entirely come out of the emotions in the part is nice and often essential, but it’s just icing on the cake.

The Russo’s Reveal Story Details For ‘Captain America: Civil War’

civilwars

I’m on Cap’s team, whose side are you on? – Skatronixxx

Besides the Civil War Comic and the trailer drop for the Russo’s brothers Captain America: Civil War. There hasn’t been substantial information regarding the make-up of Cap’s third film in the Marvel Cinematic franchise … until now.

In an interview with Heroic Hollywood, the Director brothers Joe and Anthony revealed some of the finer points that fans can expect when Civil War hits our screens in March. The interview highlights a mostly forgotten character, considering he appeared in the less-than-popular Incredible Hulk (2008) movie, General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross.

This time around the brothers-not-so-grim explained that the constant pain in the Hulks big-green-behind, will be less gun-ho with Joe Russo describing him as “much savvier” this time around. It also appears that the General-turned-Politician has moved on from the Hulk instead targeting The Avengers as a whole “by aligning the world against them.”

Now of course our merry band of heroes are no strangers to in-fighting displayed through numerous bust-ups in both Avengers films. But will the new Spider-Man (Tom Holland) find himself involved in the superhero bust up? “I won’t talk about the personal relationship he develops, but it’s very interesting,” teased Anthony Russo. “One of the most special parts of the movie.”

As fans know, Spider-Man was the linch-pin in Marvel’s comic book crossover that lasted from 2006 – 2007. It was the first time that Peter Parker revealed his secret identity to world at the behest of Tony Stark, a publicity stunt to carry favour for the Superhero Registration Act. Now of course it would seem unlikely that a debuting Tom Holland’s Spider-Man will reveal his identity given that Sony has a vested interest that their property will go on to spawn solo films under the MCU banner. I am curious however to see if the film will cultivate the close relationship that both Parker and Stark created during the Civil War period in the comics.

Although the pair fostered a father-son relationship (given the duos affinity for science and technology) in the comics, it was constantly relayed to the audience that Stark was using Peter for his own gain. Not an evil gain, thats for sure. But the conclusion to the series made it clear that the pro-registration act was misguided. A plot-point that I’m sure Marvel will replicate in the film when considered this is a Captain America movie, who stands opposed the Government enforced order. I do wonder if the Tony and Peter bond will make it onto screen. Not only do both men have their fair share of daddy issues but with Marvel currently pairing The Hulk up with Thor in his next movie. How cool would it be to see Stark serve as Spider-Man’s mentor going forward.

If not only to make the Iron-Spider suit a reality on the big screen.

‘Batman’ WILL Appear In ‘Suicide Squad’

batman

I’m Batman, no wait that’s Ben Affleck – Skatronixxx

With the recent influx of movie news coming out of DC of late. Its clear that the comic-book-giant are quickly forming a massive-universe to rival Marvel’s own Cinematic offerings. With numerous appearances from Justice League mainstays slated to appear in Zack Snyder’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. David Ayer’s Suicide Squad seems to be leading the charge as the universe builder with Batman revealed to appear in the villain-led movie.

In an interview with USA Today, Ayer revealed that Ben Affleck’s eagerly anticipated interpretation of the Caped Crusader will be cracking skulls and taking names in the anti-hero maelstrom. “We made him fight,” revealed Ayer, “he’s awesome [as Batman].”

The director also established that the two films are “the cornerstone of the beginning” of Warner Bros. universe which opens up the possibility for more cross-over cameos further down the line. “I love Batman and Superman and Wonder Woman, but having Flash and Aquaman and Cyborg and to see them all standing together, it’s a pretty dorky and cool experience for me,” expressed Snyder.

“Basically every one of those characters has a logo that you would recognize without them standing there, and that’s a hard thing to achieve in this pop-culture world. We have history to draw on, but we also have these new frontiers to forge.”

While Dawn of Justice is introducing audiences to new interpretations of long-standing DC heroes, Suicide Squad will use iconic villains such as The Joker (Jared Leto), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) and Deadshot (Will Smith) as unlikely-heroes forced to work for Amanda Waller’s (Viola Davis) Government funded team.

Although Affleck noted that he’s “bound by nondisclosure clauses a mile long”, the actor was able to disclosed that he was “really impressed” by Suicide Squad. “It felt like I have such a cool cousin. This thing that is so awesome is somehow related to me, and that was really exciting because it started to feel like a constellation of things, and I’ve never had that feeling.”

2016 is lining up to be DC’s year with Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice arriving in theatres on March 25. With David Ayers Suicide Squad scheduled for August 5.

‘Princess Leia’ Set To Appear In ‘Star Wars Rebels’

leia

All together now, IT’S A TRAP! Ooops wrong character 😛 – Skatronixxx

Ever since Disney X.D.’s number one show Star Wars Rebels began, fans have been wondering if any of the original stars would appear especially since the show takes place in-between Episodes 3 and 4, prime proving ground for younger versions of everyones favourite Rebels.

Considering we already got Lando Calrissian, voice by Billy Dee Williams himself no-less, on more than one occasion. It was about time that Star Wars first lady Princess Leia made her animated debut.

According to TVinsider, Leia is set appear in the episode titled Princess on Lothal that will air on January 20 and will be voiced by Julie Dolan who previously portrayed the princess in Disney Infinity 3.0.

Star Wars animation veteran Dave Filoni revealed that “We thought we had an opportunity to show her learning to be a leader, experimenting with the personality that becomes the stronger more resolute character you see in A New Hope. One of the complex challenges of depicting Leia in Rebels is that we have to remind the audience that at this point she is part of the Empire. She doesn’t believe in the Empire, but she is acting the part, almost a double agent.”

Currently in its second season, Rebels has already introduced Darth Vader into the animated series as the main villain to the burgeoning Rebel Alliance. With his long-lost daughter set to join the cast, it may only be a matter of time before Luke Skywalker makes his long-awaited cameo.

‘Agents Of SHIELD’ Spin-Off ‘Most Wanted’ Goes To Pilot

mostwanted

It’s my two fave characters, you can’t leave, I won’t let you *sulks* – Skatronixxx

ABC President Paul Lee broke the news that Agents of SHIELD spin-off Most Wanted has been ordered to Pilot with Lee expressing at the recent Television Critics Association press tour, “We love the script. We think it’s going to be great. We’re doing that in the next few months.”

The new series will follow Agents of SHIELD season 2 newcomers Bobbi Morse (Adrianne Palicki) and Lance Hunter (Nick Blood), whose short-time with the show has seen the two stars become fast favourites amongst fans. Series showrunners Maurissa Tancharoen and Jed Whedon explain how the pilot-order is a some-what sombre affair should the new show go to series.

“Logistically it does mean they’re going to be leaving to make that,” revealed Whedon. “They’re a part of our show. We definitely think they are capable of carrying an entire other show. That being said, it’s sort of bittersweet. We’re very excited about the new show.”

Tancharoen herself summed up the appeal of keeping Palicki and Blood in their current position, commenting: “It’s very bittersweet because we have a bunch of females on the show who kick ass. It was so nice to have Adrianne be one of them, and then also just when it comes to the humor, just having a moment of levity, Hunter was there to have those one-liners. … That was something we could always bet on.”

Although the prospect of another Marvel show joining the ever growing ranks is an interesting venture. Most Wanted certainly has an uphill struggle when considered that the characters often work best as counter-points to other drama summed up in Tancharoen own analysis of the characters.

What works in the new series favour however is that SHIELD producers Jeff Bell and Paul Zbyszewski both co-created Most Wanted while also writing the Pilot that the ABC president loved so much. With both men also serving as showrunners and executive producers should the series go-to-order, Hunter and Morse couldn’t be in better hands than those familiar with what makes their characters tick.

SHIELD fans shouldn’t worry however as both showrunners confirmed that the agents could make their return to home-soil. “We will miss them, but that doesn’t mean they’re gone forever because, as everything in the Marvel universe, it’s all one universe,” teased Tancharoen.

“We’re pretending that there’s no such thing as a pilot, that it’s only characters who live in a world where there’s superheroes. We just know at some point they’re going to have to go somewhere else,” added Whedon. “We have a lot of characters and we’re always introducing new characters, so while they’re going to be missed, we’re certainly not going to try to replace them in any way.”

In talking about Most Wanted both Tancharoen and Whedon revealed that the new show is “awesome.”

“It’s everything you anticipate as well as things you don’t expect at all,” imparted Tancharoen. “It’s just really nice to be able to dive into those characters, and Paul and Jeff have done that exceptionally well.”

The MCU’s ‘Spider-Man’ Will Be Different From The Others

 spidey.png

Is the most eagerly anticipated character in the upcoming film, Spiderman? – Skatornixxx

Captain America: Civil War’s directors Anthony and Joe Russo are looking to bring Spider-Man into the modern era by making him unlike any of the previous interpretation of everyone’s favourite web-head.

In an interview with comicbook.com, Joe Russo disclosed “we took a very personal approach to the character. He was my favourite character growing up, so the opportunity to bring Spider-Man to the screen is a dream come true.”

In dealing with bringing such an iconic comic book character into the MCU Anthony Russo explained “we’re bringing Spider-Man into the movie in [Captain America’s] universe, in that specific tonal stylistic world. It’s a little more grounded and a little more hardcore contemporary.”

The directors further elaborated their desire to make us care more about the character this time around by grounding Peter Parker in a “world that we live in”, they hope to make the “experience of watching [him] more passionate and more well-rounded.”

The Russo brothers previous success with Captain America: Winter Soldier saw the duo-directors pair spy-heavy-thriller with the comic book world of Marvel. A darker interpretation for the MCU that resonated with fans as well as critics alike. With the directors news that Civil War will continue the darker-trend, the pair teased “a lot of shocking things are going to happen” ushering a “profound experience” within the Marvel Universe.

Captain America: Civil War is slated to hit theatres May 6, 2016.

‘Agents of SHIELD’ Star Doesn’t Expect ‘InHumans’ Movie Crossover

inhuman.png

Are You Inhuman ? – Skatronixxx

Agents of SHIELD has carved out a niche within the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the go-to show for all your InHumans madness. However if Agent Coulson actor Clark Gregg has any precognitive ability at-all, then don’t expect your favourite Agents to cross-over with Marvel’s InHumans movie in the future.

“The InHumans movie I suspect will be its own cinematic version,” discussed Clark in an interview with DigitalSpy. “That writer and director will have free-reign to do what they want to do with the InHumans. But hopefully there’ll be some way that our InHumans connect to that. It’d be too bad if that was wasted.”

Since Season 2 of the hit Marvel show. The InHumans have proven a critical story element, with Skye (Chloe Bennet) revealed to be comic book character Daisy Johnson and heir to dynasty of InHumans living on Earth. Season 3, which is set to debut in the UK this Sunday on E4, looks to continue this trend with numerous InHumans discovering their powers after Season 2’s finale saw Terrigan Crystals get into the public Water supply.

Clark did note that the show has continued to transform: “They destroy the organisation our show is named after and we have to deal with that! I’ll be interested to see how it evolves, that crossover stuff.”

With Marvel’s InHumans movie slated for release on July 12, 2019. It may be awhile yet before either Marvel or Agents of SHIELD have to worry about such crossover nonsense. But its fun to fan-fict Daisy ‘Quake’ Johnson joining The Avengers right?

Make sure to tune in Sunday January 10, on E4 for the Season 3 UK premier of Agents of SHIELD.

A&E’s ‘Damien’ TV Series Details

bj

King Arthur has joined the dark side nooooo – Skatronixxx

Get ready Horror fans for everyones favourite child-of-Satan, who is ready to return our screens with A&E’s TV sequel Damien.

A direct sequel to 1976’s The Omen (ignoring the duds 2 & 3), the show will follow Homeland actor Bradley James as a 30-year-old Damien Thorn whose relatively normal life as a War photographer is turned upside down as he must confront his Satanic nature after suppressing the tragic events of the original movie.

“It’s more a case of not being able to articulate it when you’re five and strange things are happening,” explained James at this years Television Critics Association. “I looked at it as all that evil, if you will, was a noise. The only way he could escape that noise was by surrounding himself with louder noises. That’s why he became a war photographer. There’s a lot to be said for not knowing any different and not being able to articulate it yourself, having had no one explain it to you.”

Former Walking Dead showrunner Glenn Mazzara was also on hand to explain the process of brining The Omen mythos into a grounded reality for Damien. “The approach here is you want to see Damien’s humanity,” revealed Mazzara. “He’s an antichrist. So if you say Christ is all God and all Human, the antichrist would be all human and all devil. That’s an interesting character to root for. As Damien faces his humanity, he’s going to go down a path where as he’s doing stuff, we both want him to be stopped and want him to fulfill his destiny.”

Mazzara, who will also serve as executive producer on show, also confirmed that the show will tackle the tough subject of religion with Damien’s search for God “leads him to the Devil.”

“It’s a process. One of the things I wanted to avoid was I didn’t just want to have Damien fully cognizant of what was going on and a matter of people trying to flush him out because that’s a serial killer show. I wanted to look at someone who is supposedly tasked with this horrifying future crime, that he is going to bring about the apocalypse. Does he give into that? Does he fight against it? Does he want to do that or not want to do that? I thought that was very interesting. That seemed like the longest run. That seemed like the fullest story. That was a full character arc, a full journey.”

Helping Damien in his journey to discover his Devilish-roots will be Barbara Hershey, most remembered as Natalie Portman’s over-bearing mother in the Academy award winning film Black Swan. Hershey will once again channel that creepy-essence as Damien’s guide Ann Rutledge, whose job has been to protect him for much of his adolescent life and now must help the young man to realise his dark destiny.

The Omen will be the most recent Horror franchise to receive a TV drama adaptation after NBC’s critical lauded Hannibal, MTV’s Scream and A&E’s own Bates Motel.

Damien will premier on March 7, 2016 on A&E.

New Images And Details Of Marvel’s ‘Doctor Strange’

drs.png
I think this film might surprise us … in a good way – Skatronixxx

A few images of Benedict Cumberbatch as the Sorcerer Supreme have been revealed of late but Marvel have officially lifted the lid on Doctor Strange with a few new images to boot, including previously unreleased concept art.

Cumberbatch’s Strange wont be alone in his fight as Chiwetel Ejiofor’s Baron Mordo and Tilda Swinton’s the Ancient One round up the good guys, with Mads Mikkelsen mysterious villain looking to wreck havoc over the talented surgeons life. True Detective star Rachel McAdams has also been cast in the film as a “fellow surgeon that has a history with Strange” who serves as “his sort of lynchpin to his old life” before he became a Sorcerer.

Doctor Strange will be the first origin tale in Phase 3 of Marvels’ intergalactic Cinematic universe and will introduce magic into a superhero world full of super-soldiers, Billionaire inventors and Hulking monsters. “We don’t want to shy away from that, because that’s what makes Doctor Strange Doctor Strange,” confided Marvel Producer Kevin Fiege. “He has a Cloak of Levitation that allows him to fly, but he doesn’t fly like Superman or like Thor.”

Fiege also revealed in his interview with Entertainment Weekly that Stranges’ signature idol, The Eye of Agamatto, will feature heavily in the film granting Steven the ability to “manipulate probabilities” even “screw around with time’ — which is part of our story.”

Fans have theorised that The Eye likely is an Infinity Stone – the Time Stone – coveted by Thanos which will have to show up in the series of films before The Avengers ultimate showdown in The Infinity War scheduled for release in 2018.

Doctor Strange is slated for release in theatres November 4, 2016.
