‘Gravity Falls’ Creator Lands A New Fox Show

Those mourning the end of the beloved Disney X.D. animated series Gravity Falls. May be happy to hear that creator Alex Hirsch has landed a presentation pilot for his new animated show with major broadcast network FOX.

In a conversation with Variety, Hirsch was tipped lipped about his new show but did quip that “I’m cooking up some brand-new weirdness.” The article also revealed that the writer and voice actor had also been courted by other networks before ultimately deciding to go with FOX.

Gravity Falls has currently finished its second season run but a hour-long series finale is set to air February 15. In addressing the announcement that the show was to end, Hirsch commented: “I always designed Gravity Falls to be a finite series about one epic summer – a series with a beginning, middle, and end. There are so many shows that go on endlessly until they lose their original spark, or mysteries that are cancelled before they ever get a chance to payoff.”

FOX has been home to a number of successful animated shows including King of the Hill, Family Guy, American Dad, Futurama and (of course) The Simpsons. Should Hirsch’s new show get picked up he will be in great company.

‘Ghostbusters’ Looking To Scare The Pants Off You

I’m STILL not sold on this sorry! – Skatronixxx

The Ghostbusters film will undoubtedly have laughs aplenty with its eclectic cast of some of Hollywoods top comediennes, but the reboot is also looking to scare the bejeebers out of you when it hits our screens next year.

In a behind-the-scenes peek with Entertainment Weekly, Director Paul Feig’s latest work looks to bring the creep factor with its cast of villains. Revealing that various ghosts from New Yorks criminal underground past, look to cause all kinds of mischief with renounced improv comedian Neil Casey at the helm as Big Bad Rowan.

As well as ectoplasmic fiends, the quartet of Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones have also faced backlash via social media about the all female team. McCarthy herself laughs this off however joking “If this doesn’t work, we go back and lose our [right to] vote, I’m talking pre-suffragette.”

Lets hope that doesn’t happen.

Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters is released in theatres July 15, 2016.

The Rights To Horror Franchise ‘Halloween’ Are Up For Grabs

No it’s not ‘THAT’ Michael Myers from Shrek and Waynes World – Skatronixxx

One of cinemas most enduring franchises Halloween, has been a mainstay within the Horror Genre since its inception in 1978. When iconic villain Michael Myers slow walked his way into our nightmares and stranglehold our fears while peeping through his blank, lifeless mask.

The franchise has seen many sequels since the original tale, even a reboot at the hands of Director Rob Zombie while under the watchful eye of The Weinstein Company who have recently announced that they have relinquished the rights to the slasher series.

According to Bloody Disgusting, Miramax has decided to start over their next instalment in the series while shopping around for a new distributor. Malek Akkad, producer on the series since 1995’s Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers, is currently at the helm looking to rework the planned 3rd film in the Zombie reboot timeline, presumedly rebooting the series once again for a new owner.

‘Anakin Skywalker’ Could Have Returned For ‘The Force Awakens’

In a move that would have proven controversial with Star Wars fans. Prequel hero turned legendary sci-fi villain Darth Vader, was originally set to appear in this years blockbuster Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Concept artist Ian McCraig revealed in The Art of Star Wars: The Force Awakens companion book, that Hayden Christensen could have return to reprise his role as Anakin Skywalker who eventually became the Sith Lord.

“Anakin’s ghost could come back”, teased McCraig. “If we see Anakin Skywalker, because he does flow back and forth between Darth Vader and Anakin, let’s see him as a character with a dark and light side.”

As it turns out only the charred remains of Darth Vader’s helmet made it into the film after rumours of Christensen return made the rounds back in September.

Fans did however get to see old faces in form of C-3PO actor Anthony Daniels, Chewbacca – Peter Mayhew, and prequel star Ewan McGregor who lent his voice as Obi-Wan Kenobi in Rey’s (Daisy Ridley) Force-Flashback scene.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens has recently broken Jurassic World’s record as the fastest movie to reach $1Billion dollars at 12 days, beating the Dino-franchise by one day. With the film yet to be released in Asia, we will have to see what records the film has in its sights next.

‘Supergirl’ Midseason Review

 Is it a bird? A plane? No it’s @mitch_rated mid season review of Supergirl – Skatronixxx

Supergirls meteoric arrival onto the general publics viewing radar saw the often overshadowed and forgotten daughter-of-krypton thrust into the limelight. As CBS’s newest superhero show broke records and set people’s expectations to the nth degree. It rested on the shoulders of actress Melissa Benoist to fly or plummet to her doom. But as fans like me came to realise, we had nothing to worry about.

In stating whether Supergirl maintained those kind of viewing figures that the Pilot achieved is un-fair, given how modern viewership these days are rendered redundant with the advent of streaming services and catch-up capabilities. What Supergirl did do however was focus on creating a grounded reality that the early days of Smallville achieved in producing. Taking that and running with it; or should that be flying?

For a show that primarily focuses on the exploits of a flying-Alien superhero. Benoist and writers carefully crafted their Supergirl into a hero worth rooting for. Be it fighting the various fantastical Alien Big Bads that cropped up each week. Or dodging the delightfully catty (pun intended) barbs thrown her way by her overbearing Big Boss Cat Grant, played by the masterful Calista Flockhart. Benoist’s charm and adorkable personality injected Kara with an unwavering aura of goodness which is undoubtedly integral to the comic book characters fight for justice. But if left in the far less capable hands, has the danger of becoming preachy and bland. A blight which has shrouded various incarnations of Clark Kent in a number of comic-book-adaptations.

What helps the show in maintaining the light-hearted tone is the wealth of supporting characters that orbit Kara’s life. From the love interest of Superman stories mainstay James ‘Jimmy’ Olsen (Mehcad Brooks), to the ever-faithful sidekick of original character Winslow ‘Winn’ Schott Jr (Jeremy Jordan). Each supporting character are self serving rather than left feeling like a spare part, which complements the dramatic tone that each bring to various episodes they appear. A stand-out being Flockharts Cat Grant, a character who has been described as a Devils Wears Prada prototype by the shows own producers, has been handled particularly well. Escaping what could had been a two dimensional character has been build as a stern supporter of Supergirl which made that reveal in the shows midseason finale all the more poignant.

The show however hasn’t been without its problems. Plague by a couple of dodgy episodes that seem to tread water in favour of dragging out over-arching mysteries, such as the true allegiance of DEO Commander Hank Henshaw (David Harewood). The show floundered in maintaining what essentially is Kara’s biggest threat which is her Aunt Astra (Laura Benanti), whose plan to save Earth through nefarious means. Seemed bookended into the Finale leaving an unsatisfactory taste in our pallets when the cliffhanger hit. Assuming that Astra becomes the season’s Big Bad going forward, the show would feel more async in serialising Astra’s storyline to keep her threat in the minds of the viewers. Rather than cropping up here-and-there like a classic cartoon villain. Where’s Mutley when you need him.

Even with the tedious introducing characters, season 1 had a strong forefront that has build strong foundations allowing characters to breath and face stronger dramatic arcs to come. And with Cat’s estranged son Adam Foster (Blake Jenner) making his way back into her life and rumoured appearance of Superman Villain Bizzaro yet to come. It seems as if Kara and Co. will have a lot on their plate when Supergirl returns January 4 next year.

David Fincher Teams Up With Charlize Theron On Netflix Series

Director David Fincher and Academy award winning actress Charlize Theron have finally found a new home for their long-gestated Tv crime series Mindhunter. Originally developed for HBO back in 2010, Mindhunter will now co-exist alongside Fincher’s other mega-hit House of Cards on the streaming service Netflix.

The Netflix exclusive series will be based on the 1996 book Mind Hunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit, written by special agent John Douglas and Mark Olshaker. The novel offers a behind-the-scenes look at high-profile cases involving some of histories most notorious serial killers.

It is believed that both Fincher and Theron will serve as executive producers while Fincher is also tapped to direct. Additional reports also indicate that British writer Joe Penhall (Enduring Love, The Road) is handling the script.

Release Date Set For Avatar 2

I wonder how much the budget will be for this sequel? No doubt the size of a small African country! – Skatronixxx 

For the time being James Cameron’s Avatar (2009) is still the highest grossing film of all time but could its very own sequel topple the Box-Office-behemoth when it eventually reaches theatres Christmas 2017?

In an interview with Montreal Gazzette, Cameron confirmed plans to release his next trio of sequels over consecutive years beginning Christmas 2017 and how they related to each other in a unique way.

“Christmas of ’17 is the target,” revealed Cameron. “At least, that’s what we’ve announced. But I don’t consider that to be as important as the fact that when we get all three films done, we drop them a year apart. I call it a met-narrative that runs across the three movies. Each film stands alone, but it also tells one much larger story.”

With the first film in the franchise dropping in 2009, fans of the Pandorian natives have wondered what has taken the director so long. “We have design more or less finished, which is an enormous task. It’s been about a two-year task. [We’ve finished] all the creatures and the landscapes, and the new worlds within the world of Pandora that you see.”

The director also confided that “the writing is ongoing, but almost finished. Technical development is done. Stages are done. Infrastructure. So we’re really poised to start after the first of the year.”

With his first film proving such a big hit, both critically and commercially, overtaking his Academy award winning film Titanic (1998) as the highest grossing film of all time. Cameron hoped that the Avatar sequel will prove that first film wasn’t just a “big fluke.”

FlashForward – One Series Wonders

Who remembers FlashForward or it was it erased like the other 137 seconds of your life?

Hi everyone I’m back! You miss me? Well I’d like to apologise as I have been very busy as are most of you this time of the year, and this is the first chance I’ve had in a while to sit down and writer so I thought I’d continue where I left off. With my series on ‘One Series Wonders’, enough procrastinating let’s get down to business ….

It’s time for part four in my reviews of ‘One Series Wonders’. In the first part I talked about New Amsterdam, the amazing one series show where Jamie Lannister played a semi-immortal detective before he was Jamie Lannister. In the second part I talked about Aussie Hawaii Five-0 star Alex O’Loughlin stint as a vampire detective in a show that in my opinion was cancelled FAR TOO SOON *HUMPH*. We then carried along the lines of detectives, in the third part I went with a wizardy private investigator show. It was the show that if you imagine Harry Potter all grown up and a recovering alcoholic resentful for his powers and the world. So to recap with had a semi-immortal detective and an immortal private eye and a wizard private eye. What did I choose to go with next? What’s that it’s another cop show? Well kinda! It’s FLASH FORWARD.

WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

Well as you know so far most of my shows have been around the time of 2007 and 2008, this show is surprisingly almost from the same time too with it running over 2009 and 2010. Wow is FlashForward really that old? Yeah I know I thought that it wasn’t too, if you don’t believe me go ahead and google it, you’ll be surprised. See I told you 😛 The show was out at the same time as popular TV show ‘Lost’ and I for one personally saw a lot of parallels in the show; such as when the show would go back and forth between the past and the present. The fact they both aired on the same show channel also drew extra parallels and comparisons. The first episode also made you go ‘what the hell…’ and everyone would be talking about it the next day at work and school. But what was it about??? Well this is where it gets interesting!

Like my last article on The Dresden Files, this TV show originally started life as a book. The show is based on the 1999 novel Flashforward by Canadian science-fiction writer Robert J. Sawyer. I have yet to read the book, but it anyone reading this has, please let me know what you thought of it.

Who’s read this let me know?

Imagine a world where nearly everyone on the planet simultaneously lose consciousness for 137 seconds, during this people see what appears to be a vision of their own life roughly six months in the future, as it’s the future this is where the ‘FlashForward’ part comes in. You may think it may not be that bad, but imagine suddenly blacking out for 2 minutes and 17 seconds, the results would be catastrophic. Planes would crash as they had no pilots to control them or activate the auto pilot for one. Pretty scary eh?

This causes a team of Los Angeles FBI agents (why is it always America, why couldn’t it be us Brits or even the Canadians?) led by Stanford Wedeck (Courney B. Vance) and spearheaded by Mark Benford (Joseph Fiennes, yes Voldemort’s brother) and his partner Demetri Noh (John Cho yes Harold from Harold and Kumar), who are tasked with the job of  determining what happened, why, and whether it will happen again. So to summarise most of the world ‘FlashForward’ and see there future and the task of finding out what happens falls to Voldemort’s brother and Harold from ‘The American Pie’ franchise. Eeep! But there is more to it than that. Like why did all those crows die at once? Did we ever find that out?

The show was ABC’s new ‘hit’ show, it had been running Lost for several years and as Lost coming to the end of its run the channel needed a new show. They even were able to bring on board British actor Dominic Monaghan who was also in Lost too. The future for this show looked good.

The shows main plot is to find out what happened and why and how to prevent it in the future, sorry I don’t have much more on this show as it was jerked around by UK terrestrial channel Channel 5 during its run and suffered with timeslot changes. Boo!!!

I for one thought this show had great promise and like the other three shows either Hollywood disagrees with me or I just have a unique taste for doomed shows.

WHY WAS IT CANCELLED AND COULD IT COME BACK?

But why was it cancelled???  It launched to large audiences of 12.47 million viewers in the US but the show’s ratings rapidly declined to that of around 4 million. Although that may have justified some shows to continue, due to the large budget it did not play in FlashForward’s favour. It like Moonlight was also the result of an unexpected extended hiatus that may have contributed to the deteriorating fanbase. As I already covered earlier despite being given a primetime slot in my country of the UK on Channel 5, the fact it was on a channel that regularly struggles to reach the viewer ratings of BBC and ITV did not help. Would it have fared better on channels such as ITV2 (home of The Vampire Diaries), E4 (Supernatural’s residence), maybe but we’ll sadly never know.

So we have tanking ratings that act as a catalyst for the cancellation, but why was it official cancelled and could it come back? Well it appeared to be a victim of ‘The Curse Of Lost’, the shows channel ABC did not launch any new shows during most of Lost’s run and with FlashForward being the first new show it had a lot of pressure to live up to. However would the people who watched Lost watch FlashForward? That was a risky gamble to take and it appeared to ultimately backfire badly. Why though? Well first of all there’s no assurances that people who liked Lost would like FlashForward and like many shows that are kinda similar I use the term kinda ‘loosely’, people will try to find similar characters to cling onto in the other show and if they don’t they’ll moan. But it’s NOT the same show it’s different and I think people sometime sadly loose sight of that.

You also had the fact that it was an adaptation from a book and shows that original premise comes from books often have a lot of pressure to live up to, as the diehard reviewers will more likely than not come from the biggest fans of the books.

So to summarise we got an unexpected hiatus, scheduling changes, living in the shadow of one of the most popular shows of all time and the fact it is loosely based on a book too. All those seem to have sadly contributed towards its end.

Well despite winning numerous awards for the show and repeatedly winning votes for ‘Most Missed TV show’ it appears the chances of it coming back are about equal to that of a Dodo returning.

Below is the pitch from the books author writer Robert J. Sawyer, where he wanted to bring the show back and rather than shy away from the Lost comparisons, truly embrace them, be warned it’s a long read but in it you can a unique view into the mind of the writer of FlashForward and how the show could have and should have been:-

“Since you’re exploring ideas for Season Two, I’d like to make a pitch. For better or worse, FLASHFORWARD was initially presented as the ‘new LOST.’ We got good numbers for the pilot, but then people started turning away; our audience shrunk week after week. Why? Because we didn’t live up to that billing; we WEREN’T the new LOST after all.

So, what does LOST have that we didn’t?

First, LOST depicted a huge disaster — the crash of the Oceanic Airlines flight 815 — and a desperate bid for survival in the aftermath of that crash, a survivalist theme that has lasted for many years now. But FLASHFORWARD didn’t do that. Oh, we depicted a huge disaster, then just sort of pushed it all aside, and went on pretty much as if it had never happened.

By the end of the pilot, “No More Good Days,” Mark and Olivia manage to magically drive home immediately following the flashforwards, despite all of the car wrecks that should have made road travel impossible for many days.

Shortly thereafter, instead of air travel still being grounded, Mark and Janis were jaunting off to Europe. And instead of Olivia dealing with tens of thousands of injuries for weeks on end, she was soon seen devoting her efforts to performing surgery on a Squirrelio doll. And by the time Halloween rolled around, everyone was trick-or-treating as if nothing had happened at all.

We kept TELLING people that this was the biggest disaster in human history, but SHOWING them that it, in fact, had less impact on day-to-day life for most people than did 9/11.

What else did LOST give us? A small group of characters forced to depend on each other for survival despite their competing agendas.

One of our notions early on was that LOST had only 40 stories to tell, while we had 7 billion. But in fact, we ended up almost never telling stories about the flashforwards of people outside our core group. We did it once with the guy who had Addison’s disease, but that was about it for flashforward-of-the-week episodes, and instead we became fixated on people who DIDN’T have flashforwards — Demetri, the Blue Hand members, etc., which would be a bit like LOST becoming fixated on people who had planned to be on that Oceanic flight, but had missed boarding it in time for take off.

LOST worked because we understood WHY we were concentrating on these 40 people — they were isolated from all of humanity.

FLASHFORWARD didn’t work because we were concentrating on our ten or so regulars, who, in many cases, had problems the viewers found banal — surely SOMEBODY, SOMEWHERE, our viewers were thinking, has to have had a more interesting flashforward than an AA guy who saw himself drinking, or a woman who saw herself with a man who wasn’t her husband … but we kept going back to those storylines, without explaining why our focus was so tight even though the whole world had been affected.

And, finally, LOST, while concentrating on its core group, was able to widen the sweep to include other people as needed through flashbacks to earlier events. That kept LOST from ever getting claustrophobic, despite the confined setting and small number of people stranded on the island.

So, is there a way to actually make FLASHFORWARD the new LOST in season two? That is:

(1) is there a way to make it about a huge disaster again — and actually about dealing with the aftermath of that disaster and the need for survival;

(2) is there a way to explain why we’re focussing on a small core group, instead of telling the story of a worldwide event affecting 7 billion people; and

(3) is there a way to build a structure that includes intriguing flashbacks that periodically expand our focus?

I think the answer on all three points is yes, and although I didn’t frame it in the above terms (as a way to make FLASHFORWARD really deserve the designation of “the new LOST”), I did suggest the scenario below to David Goyer in a memo on November 19, 2009, and I’d like to repeat that pitch again, in modified form. Obviously, some story details have changed since then, but you’ll get the gist:

Why are the bad guys so desperate to perfect the replicating of flashforwards? Answer: they got TOO greedy, with disastrous consequences. They’ve been orchestrating miniature isolated flashforwards for years now (since 1991) in hopes, as I said in a previous memo, of gaining financial information from the future.

But they’ve also seen that the next flashforward (the one that will occur at the end of season one) will cause not just a global blackout (that is, not just a shutting down of the conscious part of the brain, leaving the autonomic part — controlling heartbeat, breathing, etc. — operating) but a TOTAL global brain-function shutdown: all seven billion people will die; their conscious, unconscious, and autonomic functioning stopping.

THAT could be our killer end-of-season-one moment: everyone (except for Simon and a few others wearing the QED rings) looking out at the Los Angeles landscape littered with collapsed bodies, and this dialog:

SIMON: “Another blackout. How long till they wake up this time?”

McDOW: “They don’t. They’re not unconscious. They’re dead. All seven billion of them.”

Off Simon to the end credits — and onward to Season Two!

From there, you’ve got a great springboard for what could truly be the new LOST:

* a handful of characters who didn’t die (those wearing the QED rings, plus, if we want, others who were protected some other way);

* disaster on a gigantic scale — the entire world shut down, and no hope of food or electricity production, etc., coming back online, because there just aren’t any people left operate the equipment, forcing our characters to fight to survive.

In other words, it’s a story about a small band of characters struggling to survive without modern comforts — just like LOST.

And it’s now logically a story about a handful of characters (our survivors) instead of the whole (now dead) human race — just like LOST.

And, of course, to tell the backstory (which I outline in the next few paragraphs), we WOULD need flashbacks, and so we could, as needed, expand the cast of characters — just like LOST.

Indeed, we could contrive it that the season-one-ending blackout that killed almost everyone had the effect of causing spontaneous, unpredictable time displacement for those characters who did survive, giving them flashbacks and flashfowards — just like LOST.

Here’s the proposed backstory and ultimate quest: The goal of the ‘bad guys’ we met in season one (Flosso’s employers) was to find a way to jump the consciousness of the human race PAST the total global shutdown, reanimating everyone; they’re out to save humanity (including themselves, as a subset of that humanity — they’re not altruists).

THIS could be the resonance for Charlie’s ‘No More Good Days’ line — she, and Flosso’s employers, had seen that NO MATTER WHICH one of the many worlds that might exist comes to pass, in ALL OF THEM humanity is dead; no matter how you slice the future, there are no more good days — unless our people find a way to leapfrog consciousness ahead, resurrecting the human race.

And thus, in our first-season finale, we see that Charlie is in fact quoting something she heard Lloyd say on April 29, 2010: in all the many worlds yet to come that branch off of THIS now, humanity is dead. Lloyd, in looking at the formula Dylan has written in lipstick on the mirror, realizes that a consequence of it is that a synchronized multi-accelerator event like Flosso’s people are planning will not displace consciousness; it will destroy it.

(Also, this could help rehabilitate Janis as the mole: she knows that helping the bad guys is the only way to ultimately save humanity.)

What we end up with is a Season Two that really is about a disaster, but a much bigger one than LOST ever portrayed, with the stakes — the resurrection of humanity — much higher than any LOST ever dealt with. We end up not just being the new LOST, but LOST to the max — bigger, grander, and even more involving.”

Do you think those ideas could have worked? I for one would have been interested to see them happen. Sadly it seems we’ll never know.

‘Spoiler Alert’: Which ‘The Force Awakens’ Character Was Meant To Die?

If you were one of the many that was fooled by Poe Dameron’s untimely death at the opening to Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Then you weren’t alone, as initially the star who brought to life the Ace-Fighter pilot, Oscar Isaacs. Had come to terms with his characters demise early on only to learn that he may see the sequels yet.

In an interview with GQ, The Force Awakens Director J.J. Abrams revealed that Isaacs was brought on board to portray Dameron in the action packed opening scene only to die after a hard fought battle. The director invited Isaacs to Paris to pitch the role describing the character as an “amazing” fighter pilot who battles the First Order and “opens the whole movie.”

After the pitch, the Academy nominated actor was enthusiastic to sign on the dotted line but was deflated after Abrams revealed the characters fate. Isaac exclaimed that “I’d done that before. Set up the plot for the main guy and then die spectacularly.”

Abrams would ultimately fight for the actors collaboration encouraging him that the character would live on in the extended universe through books, video games and more. “We talked about the story and who this character could be,” Abrams noted. “I loved the collaboration. People like Oscar are the people you listen to.”

After deliberating over the role, Isaac would later write to Abrams accepting the part, reasoning “I figured it would be a cameo: I’ll come in, do my thing, and maybe it’s actually better not to have to sign myself up for three movies.”  He was surprised to hear however that Abrams had gone back to the drawing board and surmised a situation that saw Poe survive, playfully informing the actor that “Never mind. I’ve figured it out. You’re in the whole movie now.”

Abrams disclosed that it was his talk with Isaac in Paris that convinced him to rework the characters storyline, discovering that the character was a worthy addition to the Star Wars universe: “Let’s say that it was in that conversation [in Paris] that we began to see a way that being in the movie would be worth his time and the audience’s.”

New Information On CBS’s ‘Supergirl’ Comic Book Series

CBS’s Supergirl will receive a new ongoing comic book series penned by DC veteran girl-of-steel writer Sterling Gates.

Adventures of Supergirl won’t directly tie into the show but will tell original tales following Kara-Zor-El as she teams up with the DEO as she tries to keep her identity under wraps while working at CATCO Media.

The 13-part digital comic book series will be released bi-weekly every Monday to co-inside with new episodes on CBS in the US. DC has also confirmed that super villains such as Rampage, Vril, Dox and Psi will appear.

The comic book series will also have a rotating cast of artists including Bengal, Jonboy Meyers, Emanuela Lupacchino and Emma Vieceli. Currently Bengal is slated to pencil, ink and colour the first three chapters.

Supergirl won’t be the first DC Tv property to receive a comic book series with Arrow, The Flash and Smallville all enjoying ongoing success. Supergirl however will be the first to skip a paperback release with the entire series being released as a collected graphic novel after the digital issues have been posted online.

The series itself is enjoying rating success with CBS ordering a full season bringing the total episodes to 20 in its debut season.

Adventures of Supergirl will be released in January 25, 2016.
