The Tales of Beedle the Bard is a volume of five wizarding fairy-tales left to Hermione Granger by Albus Dumbledore in the and final book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Only one tale, ‘The Tales of the Three Brothers‘ is recounted in the book and movie adaptation, and is the tale that provided vital clues to Voldemort’s downfall.

Originally presented as a personal gift to “those most closely connected to the Harry Potter books,” this copy of The Tales of  Beedle the Bard is one of only seven unique copies, produced by J.K. Rowling , as a gift for the most important people in Rowling’s life during this time. The author gave this copy to British publisher Barry Cunningham, who famously accepted the first Harry Potter book for publication. This gorgeous book brings incredible importance to Harry Potter fans, as Cunningham played an instrumental role in launching J.K. Rowling’s career and bringing them this amazing world.

In a dedication written in the front of the book, J.K. Rowling wrote: “To Barry, the man who thought an overlong novel about a boy wizard in glasses might just sell… THANK YOU.”

Cunningham says the experience of receiving the copy on December 12th 2007 as “unreal,” and it became “progressively more exciting” as he opened the white jiffy envelope to reveal a  manuscript book, bound in brown morocco leather and adorned with semi-precious stones, which sit alongside a sterling silver mounted skull.

“The personal resonance of this book makes this both an exceptional and highly desirable object to come to auction,” explained Dr. Philip W. Errington the Director of Sotheby’s Books and Manuscripts Department. “It is particularly special as it is only one of six made for those closest to the author throughout the journey of creating the Harry Potter series,  gifted to the man who recognised the brilliance of J.K Rowling’s writing and her potential impact on children’s literature.”

Pontus Silfverstolpe, founder of Barnebys (the search engine which tracks art, antiques and collectables internationally across 1,600 auction houses), says: “Harry Potter has become an auction phenomenon. Any Harry Potter memorabilia, film posters, film costumes, and anything to do with the actors who starred in the films are eminently saleable. Prices have steadily increased over the past decade. For example, recently we have seen a number of items make surprising amounts.”

Other memorabilia items have bought in tonnes of cash at auctions before;  J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter chair sold for a whopping $394,000 at Heritage auctions in the USA.

Certain copies of the original books are also worth a lot of money;  first edition’s of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone can sell for up to £25 000, whilst hardcover first editions of this book crediting “Joanne Rowling” rather than “J.K. Rowling” can get up to £35, 000!

A signed, first edition copy of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets on Shapero  for £4, 200

By the time the fourth book, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, was in print, Rowling was signing less and less copies, and by the sixth (Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince) she was no longer doing any book tours at all – so any signed copies of books four-seven are highly collectible and can get a seller around £10, 000.

This all comes at an exciting time as the next step in the world of the Wizarding World begins – with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them just around the corner, and fans all over the world relishing in the excitement that this particular story in the franchise will be five movies long, it’s never been a better time to be a Harry Potter fan.

People of Earth: S1 Ep1 “Pilot”

People of Earth premiered on October 31st on the U.S. cable channel TBS.

The show was created by David Jenkins and is executive produced by Conan O’Brien. When I saw the trailers I knew the show was going to be funny, but the kind of funny that makes me think. Not the slapstick formulaic trash that most of the network produced comedies prefer to go by. You know, the ones where you’re told when to laugh and what to laugh at by the laugh track that they still use.

Introducing: Ozzie Graham.

ozzie-graham

From the beginning, the plot of People of Earth grabs you. It starts with the main character, Ozzie Graham (played by comedian Wyatt Cenac) driving down a deserted road at night.

Suddenly, a deer (yes, the animal) appears in the passenger seat and starts talking to him. He freaks, then snaps to reality on a train.

He was dreaming.

It seems Ozzie was in an accident recently and has had trouble sleeping ever since. When he does fall asleep, he keeps having the same dream over and over. He’s driving down a dark road late at night. He begins to doze off when he’s suddenly warned by the deer (yup, still a deer) sitting next to him that he’s about to have an accident. At the very same moment, he spots another deer in the road and swerves to avoid it, causing the accident.

Ozzie is a reporter who works for Glint, a prominent New York publication. He’s taking the train upstate to the small town of Beacon where he’s been sent to do a feature on a group called StarCrossed whose members say they’ve all been abducted by aliens.

StarCrossed.

the-group

The group is run by Gina Morrison (played by Saturday Night Live alum, Ana Gasteyer). They’re reluctant to share their experiences at first, but Ozzie reassures them their identities will be kept secret.

As he listens to their stories, Ozzie clearly begins to think they’re all out of their minds.

Later, back in NYC, Ozzie meets with his boss, Johnathan Walsh (played by Michael Cassidy of Smallville), who seems to love the draft of the article. Walsh is one of those young, rich, eccentric types. He wants Ozzie to write a follow-up, but Ozzie is reluctant.

Eventually, Ozzie is convinced so he heads back to Beacon and meets up with group member, Gerry (Luka Jones), who gives us a bit of the history alien abductions in the city. We also find out this city has the most reported alien abductions on the East Coast.

As he listens, Ozzie realizes this city is where his accident happened.

Later, as Ozzie is doing research for the article, he meets with each group member. We now get a snippet into each of their lives and personalities. None of them impress Ozzie much. But as they all tell him about their alien experience, Ozzie begins to notice similarities in their stories.

The mystery begins.

That night Ozzie goes to dinner with Gina and Gerry. There, they tell him they suspect he too has had an experience. His accident shares similarities with the experiences of the rest of the group. They offer to help him figure out what’s going on but, of course, Ozzie refuses to entertain the thought that his accident was alien related.

That is until they ask him to recall the events of the night and he can’t.

Just then, news breaks that Ozzie’s article has been published prematurely and the actual names of the group members were used in the published piece.

Ozzie is pissed and confronts Walsh. Walsh wants Ozzie to drop the article but after his experience at dinner, Ozzie is now interested in finding out more.

So he returns to Beacon and apologizes to the group. He also decides to join them.

During his first meeting as a member, they hypnotize him so he can better recall the events of his abduction. Strangely, it seems Ozzie was actually awake and coherent during the whole thing. The major difference between his experience and the others is that he interacted with ALL of the three types of aliens at once. Not just one at a time like everyone else.

abducted

Ozzie can’t believe what happened to him but he finally admits there’s something mysterious going on. He decides to quit his job at Glint and move to Beacon. He gets a job writing for the local news. He also becomes a full member of the group.

Walsh is not happy that Ozzie quits.

So we’re looking forward to more.

Make sure you watch until the very end of the episode because we’re shown a comedic look into what actually went on during Ozzie’s abduction.

You’ll also see some clips of upcoming episodes. It seems TBS is trying to produce more shows intended to draw the 18-49-year-old viewers away from Cartoon Network and Comedy Central with wittier and edgier programming. They might have another winner with this show. Time will tell, but for now, so far I’m a fan.

J.R.R. Tolkien is getting a biopic called Middle Earth

Middle Earth, a biopic about the life of J.R.R. Tolkien is in the works. The film will focus on the events that inspired Tolkien’s fantasy world depicted on The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.

tolkienbiopic-400x282

“Story follows Tolkien’s early life and love affair with Edith Bratt, whom he later married. The couple lived happily in Oxford, surrounded by friends, but when war broke out in 1941 Tolkien embarked on four years of battle and hardship, an experience that influenced his Middle Earth stories.”

lord-of-the-rings-promo-shot-400x200

James Strong (Doctor Who, Downton Abbey) will direct the film.  Angus Fletcher (Sand Dogs) wrote the script based on over six years of research on Tolkien.  Bob Shaye and Michael Lynne, who produced The Lord of the Rings trilogy are back to produce this film as well.

hobbitsis-584-400x245

People know Tolkien’s work as interpreted by Peter Jackson in his films of the same titles, but Tolkien’s work is so much more vast and detailed that what was projected on the screen.  I think it will be interesting for fans of the films to see how Tolkien created Middle-earth; the people, the creatures, the languages…everything small detail.  If you’ve seen the movies, I highly recommend reading the books as well.  And if you’re a nerd like me, read the appendices too.

Protagonist Pictures is distributing the film, tentatively schedule to be showcased to buyers at the Berlin Film Festival early next year.  There is no word on any casting or production schedule at this time.

Comic Book Artist Frank Quitely Makes Horror Animation Debut

overlay-image-chris

Frank Quitely is one of the comic book industries most talented artists. He is known for his work with writer Grant Morrison on All-Star Superman, New X-Men and We3. He has also collaborated with Mark Millar on Jupiter’s Legacy and has recently finished the five issued volume two. While Frank is known for his art, he has done a fair amount of writing, whether in indie comics or films over the past few years.

Nothing To Declare will be Frank Quitely‘s first written animated horror short.

The film is directed by multi-BAFTA-nominated animator Will Adams and produced by Mal Young, with artwork by Fraser McLean and Tom Bryant.

Nothing To Declare is based on a short story by Frank Quitely in which a well-meaning 19-year-old returns home at Christmas from backpacking in South America, only to discover he has unintentionally triggered a catastrophic chain of events.  The team expect the film to appeal to comic book readers, as well as fans of animation and horror.

frank.png

Frank Quitely had this to say about the film:

I’ve always loved the horror genre. I had written a bunch of short stories, and this one, I felt, particularly lent itself to animation. This is the first time I’ve written a story and handed it over to other artists to work on. It’s my first venture in film, and the team I’m working with are exceptionally talented and have created a brilliantly crafted animation. I’m really excited at the prospect of seeing it finished.”

Director, Will Adams had this to say:

“This will be the first home-grown short I’ve directed since 2009, so it’s a rare treat to work on a project where we have real creative freedom. Having been a fan of Frank Quitely’s work since I read his comics at school, it’s been brilliant having the opportunity to collaborate so closely with him.”

kitchen

The film is a co-production between Scottish animation studios Once Were Farmers and Interface Pattern, marking the first collaboration between the multi-award-winning studios. It is enhanced by an original score by John Cummings, formerly of the band Mogwai, who left the band on amicable terms in 2015 to pursue other musical avenues.

The team are currently running a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo to raise funds needed to complete the film. The campaign launched on Halloween and has raised 31% of its goal within the first few days. The campaign will end on December 10th 2016.

This is a rare opportunity for comic book and animation fans to own original artwork by Frank Quitely and Fraser McLean, including unseen sketches from Quitely’s sketchbook, unique, signed frames from the film, and your own portrait as a Nothing To Declare character drawn by Fraser McLean.

I am a huge fan of Frank Quitely‘s work. It’s nice to see him do something a little different than normal. I love the fact you can own movies frames, and the film itself via streaming.

If you want this project to come to life like I do and want, more details check out the Indiegogo campaign here

Young Dumbledore Coming To ‘Fantastic Beasts’ Sequel

dumbledore

With the news that the ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ franchise is set to encompass five films, it looks like the story possibilities have become a lot grander. News has broke that the creative team behind the second film in the series is now looking to cast a young Albus Dumbledore.

The most recent trailer for ‘Fantastic Beasts’ saw Eddie Redmayne’s character Newt Scamander reference Dumbledore and the events in Europe, so it seems Gellert Grindelwald’s reign of terror is set to be a driving force behind the overarching story. Director David Yates recently confirmed Dumbledore’s role in the series:

“In the second movie Dumbledore comes back. He’s got a couple of good scenes with Newt… We’re discussing who would play Dumbledore, any suggestions would be good. [Laughs]”

Given the rumours that the recently cast Johnny Depp is set to play Grindelwald, and with the shadows of two great actors hanging over the role, someone is set to have one heck of a job to do. The question is what does this mean for Newt Scamander? The story between Dumbledore and Grindelwald is a fairly big one, with the chance to be fleshed out across these five films, however how does Newt fit into the story? Surely there’s an answer, no matter how mysterious, so it will be exciting to see just what it is.

‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ releases in cinemas across the UK and US November 18th 2016.

Once Upon a Time SN6 E7 – Heartless

LANA PARRILLA, JOSH DALLAS, GINNIFER GOODWIN, JENNIFER MORRISON, COLIN O'DONOGHUE, JARED GILMORE

Alright.  So here’s how it all went down.

The Evil Queen demanded that Snow and David give up their heart (no not plural, remember they share one heart between them) or she would use water from The River of Lost Souls on the whole town.  Everyone is in despair until The Blue Fairy shows up and says they need a sapling created from the first spark of a true love.

Throughout the quest to retrieve the sapling, we see scenes of Snow and Charming’s life before the curse, and we learn that when she robbed him wasn’t the first time they met!  When they did meet, they didn’t know what the other looked like, and that’s where the sapling was made.  However, once they find the sapling, the Evil Queen shows up and breaks it.  So, the Charmings have to hand over their heart.

I admit that I kind of saw the outcome from a mile away.

Now, we have to see how Team Charming … or is it Team Swan?  Anyway, we have to see how they fix the whole one is sleeping while the other is awake thing, because the Evil Queen is on a roll!

Oh, and I almost forgot to mention the whole Rumple/Evil Queen/Zelena triangle thing.  Zelena caught Rumple and Queenie kissing!  (did that bother anyone but me?)  And, she didn’t hesitate to tell Belle.  This is getting gooooood.

So for now, Evil reigns in Storybrooke.

And next week doesn’t look any better for Team Charming Swan….

The Expanse: S1 Ep 10: Leviathan Awakes

As I said in the last post on Ep 9: Critical Mass, this episode picks up right where the last one left off. So I won’t waste any time either.

Another quick flashback.

We see Dresden is still taking samples of the virus from Julie Mao’s dead body. He lets on that Julie’s father knows about and is in on the Eros Station experiments.

Eventually, Dresden leaves Eros. On his ship, we see him watching the aftermath of the radiation and the virus spreading. He forwards the video of the dying citizens to this superiors.

Miller and Holden are getting desperate.

Miller and Holden are in a desperate search for anything to stem the effects of radiation poisoning. They get some and then head for the docks of Eros to meet up with Naomi, Alex, and Amos. As they make their way to The Rocinante, they try to figure out why they citizens of Eros are being radiated.

miller-and-holden

They’re getting sicker and sicker. The radiation is causing their insides to literally melt. Worse, neither of them knows where they’re going. As they search for a route, they enter a square where they find some police setting up equipment. They find refuge in an abandoned game room and while there, Miller begins to hallucinate from the radiation poisoning.

Suddenly, a policeman decides to check out the game room. With no other options, Miller has to quickly take action. He kills the policeman before Holden can stop him. It’s clear Holden is beginning to understand what kind of man Miller really is.

Using the dead policeman’s communicator to learn where other patrols are, they’re able to keep out of site. While they’re trying to figure out what the instruments were that the police were setting up in the square, the Eros station public transport pods reactivate. Miller and Holden are excited at first but only find more sick citizens inside. The citizens are all covered with the same virus as Julie Mao. Miller and Holden realize the virus is being spread on purpose.

En route to the docks and The Rocinante the two of them are confronted by another police patrol. Once again, Miller quickly takes care of the patrol with no remorse.

They take the clothes from the patrolmen so they can move about Eros easier. As they roam the deserted streets, they come across Kenzo, the stowaway they crossed paths with earlier. Kenzo is trying to get to the docks, too and asks Holden for help. Kenzo is desperate, knowing that staying on Eros is a death sentence but Holden doesn’t care. He chases Kenzo off. This time Miller witnesses the ruthless side of Holden.

Eventually, they reach the entrance to the docks where they find there is another standoff. It seems CPM has recruited a bunch of former OPA operatives, thugs, and gangsters to act as security for them. But now that CPM is finishing their experiments on Eros, they no longer need the conscripted security team so CPM is not allowing them to escape Eros.

Somehow Miller and Holden need to get through to The Rocinante. They cause a diversion which quickly escalates between the CPM guards and the former thugs. During the chaos, they make their way through to the elevator to the docks.

Finally, they try to get in touch with The Rocinante but are unable to reach anyone. Holden assumes Naomi followed his orders and took off without them.  Stuck at the doors to the docks, they collapse, unable to walk, dying from the radiation poisoning.

At the last minute…the doors open and Amos pops his head out.

How Naomi, Amos, and Alex reach The Rocinante.

After the shootout in front of the docks, Naomi, Alex,  Amos, and Semi reach the same conclusion about Eros Station that Miller and Holden have reached: something bad is going on.

Still stuck outside of the docks, Naomi tells the group she can guide them through the underground shafts that the OPA operatives use to move around. Eventually, they’re joined by some Eros citizens.

As they make their way through the tunnels, they can hear the suffering of the radiated citizens in the streets above. They begin to doubt Naomi knows where she’s going. Soon, she begins to doubt herself, too.

Eventually, they get through the tunnels and the blocks put up to distract anyone down there and reach the docks and The Rocinante.

amos-and-semi

While on board, there is a disagreement between Naomi, Semi, and Amos. Semi and Amos want to leave immediately, but Naomi insists on waiting for Holden. The disagreement ends with Semi being killed. So they wait.

While they are waiting, Alex intercepts the transmission of Dresden’s video recordings to his superiors. He’s able to track where the transmission is going.

Off to Season 2.

As we already know, Miller and Holden do reach The Rocinante and are on their deathbeds. Luckily, The Rocinante has adequate medical supplies to help Miller and Holden recover.

As the two of them recover, Alex blasts them out of the locked docking bay doors and The Rocinante speeds away to…Safety? Mystery? Danger? Whatever happens, they’re heading to the location that Dresden’s files were sent to.

Earth and Avarasala.

Avarasala has been trying to investigate deeper into the fusion drives. She’s invited to a briefing where Undersecretary Errinwright will explain the origins of the drives and how they got to Tycho Station. He wants to show that Fred Johnson has something to do with it all. Although Avarasala does not believe Errinwright, but plays along.

While Errinwright is inviting Avarasala to the briefing, Julie Mao’s father walks up and is introduced to her.

Later, as Avarasala is home talking with her husband, she tells him she suspects a deeper conspiracy and that Undersecretary Errinwright is at the heart of it.

Season 1 ends…

kenzo-and-the-virus

…with the lonely Kenzo exploring the now deathly quiet streets of Eros Station. He comes across the virus floating in the air, slowly spreading through the station. It’s also evolved. It’s able to mimic Kenzo’s form. Then tentacles shoot out and pull him into the center of its body…

Game of Thrones SN7 Plot Leaked

Valar morghulis! It should be pretty obvious with the title, but here’s your final warning: MAJOR spoilers for HBO‘s Game of Thrones ahead. In my last Game of Thrones article, I showed you pictures and a video from the set in Spain where we could clearly see Jon and Daenerys meeting. A few weeks before that, many of us read a GoT plot posted by Reddit user awayforthelads, who has since deleted his account. The plot leak has recently gained some credit, as arising images from the sets have corresponded with it. Fortunately for you, we have the plot leak ready for you to read.

Episode 1: Dany goes to Dragonstone, summoning some Lords to bend the knee, including the Tarlys. She burns them when they don’t. Varys and Tyrion worry about her turning into the Mad Queen. Bran crosses the Wall. The Lannisters with the help of Euron take on the Martells, Tyrells and Danny’s fleet. We see a flashback of Rhaegar and Lyanna’s wedding.
Episode 2: Arya has truly become a faceless assassin, killing the remaining Frey sons. She heads to Winterfell, encountering Nymeria on the way. Meera departs once she returns Bran to Winterfell. The siege at King’s Landing continues. As Olenna dies she tells Cersei that she was behind Joffrey’s assassination. Euron’s fleet destorys Yara’s killing two of the Sand Snakes and capturing Ellaria. Theon flees.

Episode 3: Jon is summoned by Dany, who agrees to support him in return for him bending the knee. Jon refuses, but eventually with the help of Tyrion, he swears fealty in exchange for her help in the war against the White Walkers. Theon reunites with Jon who tells him that he won’t kill him because he saved Sansa.

Episode 4: Arya arrives at Winterfell. Davos sets up a temporary truce with the Lannisters so they can prove to them the White Walkers are coming. Davos finds Gendry making weapons in King’s Landing and invites him back North, to help in the upcoming war. Jon and Dany grow close.

Episode 5: Jorah is cured at Oldtown by Sam and finally reunites with Dany. Jon, Sansa, Arya and Bran have a family reunion moment. Sansa realises she’s being played by Littlefinger, thanks to Bran. Sansa asks Arya to execute Littlefinger. Catelyn Stark is resurrected by Beric and kills Littlefinger instead. Haha, gotcha —she’s very much dead.

Episode 6: Jon needs proof that the White Walkers are real. He goes beyond the Wall with the Hound, Beric, Thoros and Tormund to capture a wight. They manage to capture one but end up surrounded. Dany shows up with her dragons, as does Benjen. Beric, Benjen and Viserion both die. Viserion is resurrected as the Night King’s mount. The survivors bring the wight to King’s Landing and show it to Cersei. Cersei agrees to unite their armies against the White Walkers but at the last moment she betrays them. Without the Lannister troops the White Walkers thin out the army. Jaimie finally leaves Cersei for good, riding North to join the armies.

Episode 7:  Jon and Danny have sex. The Wall crumbles with Viserion’s new blue fire. Sam heads to Winterfell and meets Bran, together they piece together Jon’s true heritage. Cersei miscarries. The army prepares for what could be their final battle…

I for one, do not believe 100% of this plot is true. Jon and Dany uniting will definitely happen, we’ve seen the video to prove it (previous article). I also think Arya assassinating the Freys is likely too, but as for the rest… we’ll just have to wait and see. I’d like to hear your opinion on Season 7, so comment below or tweet me @SohoDoll. As always, “The North Remembers.”
