The Rock pranks Kevin Heart on Jumanji set.

As we all know, The Rock has a tendency to be a little obnoxious and enjoys a good prank. Well poor Kevin Hart got to be the center of his mischievous mood while filming on the set of Jumanji.

The two were lying on the ground for a scene when the rock pulls something from his pocket and tosses it at the unsuspecting Hart. He then says, “Move, move.” Gesturing to Kevin that there is something of concern by them. It takes Kevin a second at first, then he jumps up off the ground and runs away, soon to realize he was pranked by The Rock.

“Happy Halloween @kevinhart4real! You can see the big fake furry spider I have in my right hand that I throw on Kevin before our take…” Oh poor Mr. Hart, but I’m sure he has just as much fun with The Rock on set. ^_^

The Walking Dead SN7 EP01-‘The Day Will Come When You Won’t Be’

A brutal and relentless season premiere saw the show enter a frightening new era.

the-walking-dead-episode-701-rick-lincoln-4-935

It’s taken me several days to work up to writing this review. Maybe some part of that has to do with the fact that a lack of internet means I haven’t been able to post it, but for the most part it’s taken me several days to start writing this because I am only just getting over the trauma. Had I written this immediately after watching the episode as I so often do, you’d just be looking at an incoherent mess of words. Of course you could still be doing that, but I like to think my writing’s not that bad. In all seriousness it actually took me some time to process what I had watched. Months of build-up and hype was due to culminate in one mind-blowing episode, and boy did it succeed.

Before the episode aired there had been rumours that more than one fan favourite was set to die. Given the show’s history, going by the comic obviously wasn’t a guarantee, but this was a moment where diverging from the comics would delay or prevent growth in several key characters. Of course this is mainly because of poor old pizza delivery boy Glenn. When he died at this point in the comics, it pushed Maggie that last step further to becoming a leader. After being such an integral part of the group for so long, losing him rocks the group to their core, and this was very apparent through the episode. Sadly, he wasn’t the only one to die, with everyone’s favourite wisecracking, moustachioed soldier Abraham falling victim to the cruel game of ‘eeny meanie miney moe’. At least he managed to live a tiny bit longer than his comic book counterpart.

The question is though, what did this episode achieve apart from sending about 20 million viewers to therapy? Well its main purpose was to sell Negan and the Saviours as a proper threat to the group, and in that regard I think we can say it succeeded. The entire episode was one long screwed up mind game by Negan, as with each passing moment, each brutal bludgeoning of a beloved member of the group, he crushed our heroes emotionally and psychologically. It all transferred over to the viewer as well. The performances on display this episode were spectacular, and you really felt everyone’s pain. This was doubly impressive as much of the cast didn’t have a word to say. What they did with body language and facial expressions conveyed more than any word ever could. The emotion was raw and varied, as each actor gave it their all and truly sold the fear and devastation caused by Negan.

Whilst this episode was big on emotional devastation, it was also big on sheer gore and brutality. When Negan came along with his barbed wire baseball bat, it was clear someone was going to die in a very brutal way, but I don’t think anyone was ready for just how sickeningly horrifying it would be. Images of Abraham and Glenn’s mushed up heads lingered in my mind for days after, but it was during Glenn’s heart wrenching final moments that the gore really reached a whole new level. Seeing Glenn with a half caved in head, eyeball popped out, gargling his last words to Maggie through a stream of blood was in all honesty difficult to watch. This is a character, a person we’ve seen grow over the course of six seasons, to the point where you feel connected to him, so to watch him die like that wasn’t easy, however it was certainly necessary. Selling Negan as threat wouldn’t have worked if only the characters saw the full extent of what he did to Abraham and Glenn, the audience had to see it too.

Outside of the deaths, the rest of the runtime essentially boiled down to Negan tormenting the group and making sure they knew exactly who was in charge. Given there had already been one more death than expected, the episode remained tense as it remained unclear whether more tragedy would follow suit, which led us into another difficult to watch scene, as Negan told Rick to cut off Carl’s hand or watch everyone die. Andrew Lincoln’s performance during this scene was phenomenal, as we saw Rick finally knocked off his pedestal. It was aided by the fact that the episode had already taken some surprising turns, so it was immensely believable that Rick would actually cut off the hand. Whilst Negan spared the group of one more tragedy in the end, it was hardly cause for celebration. The episode ended with the now much weaker group minus three members as Daryl was carted off, and like the audience, emotionally drained. Watching everyone struggle to process what had happened was a harrowing end to a harrowing episode, that will no doubt be marked as the darkest in The Walking Dead’s history.

Of course there was a lot happening amongst all that tragedy, so other notable highlights include:

  • Abraham’s death, whilst likely overshadowed by Glenn’s, still saw him go out in true Abraham style. His parting words of “Suck my nuts” to Negan gave us one last quip from the hero, whilst his subtle hand signal to Sasha was one of the most powerfully emotional moments of the episode.

  • Both Glenn and Abraham thought of others at their time of death, both seeking to console their loved ones in some way, and it spoke to the true nature of these true characters. Both of them were introduced to the show helping others, Glenn saving Rick, and Abraham seemingly saving the whole world, so it was fitting for them to go out in the same style. Still, I don’t think I’ll ever get over Glenn gargling out “Maggie I’ll find you” as that was just too sad.

  • The walker fog sequence was a visually cool addition to the episode, but it slightly felt like they had to shove some walker action in the episode somewhere, and that was why it was there. Still, it further cemented how sadistic Negan is.

  • Daryl was like an animal when being carted away. It seems he’ll have a significant story at the Sanctuary this season, where he’ll no doubt be carrying some guilt over Glenn’s death.

  • Out of everything, the most heart-breaking scene in the whole episode wasn’t the deaths. Nor was it the reactions afterwards. No, the award for most heart-breaking scene of the episode goes to the Sunday dinner scene. Seeing everyone happy and healthy, Glenn and Abraham alive and well, Glenn with his kid, was one of the saddest things. I found myself thinking in the moment that that’s the show I want to watch. I just want to be happy for a change.

So The Walking Dead started its 7th Season with one of TV’s most brutal and devastating episodes ever. The loss of Glenn and Abraham will be something that resonates on the show most definitely for the rest of this season, and likely for the remainder of the show’s lifespan. Negan and the Saviours have been solidified as a true threat, and the group is now at their lowest point yet. With Glenn and Abraham dead, Daryl carted off by the Saviours, Maggie and Sasha headed to Hilltop and the rest making an emotional journey back to Alexandria, the group is seemingly more fractured now than ever before. Surely it can only get better from here?

Jim Gaffigan Cast in Fargo Season 3

Last month, Fargo fans were treated to news that series three was getting some top drawer cast. Ewan McGregor (Trainspotting) will be playing two brothers, Carrie Coon (Gone Girl) will play the police chief at the centre of the story, Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Scott Pilgrim vs The World) will play a parolee and (my personal favourite) Scoot McNairy (Halt and Catch Fire) will play an as yet undisclosed season regular.

The latest news from the Fargo camp is that the FX show has cast comedian Jim Gaffigan to join season 3, in the role of a police deputy who works alongside Gloria. Gaffigan, who is best know for his stand up comedy and TV Land’s The Jim Gaffigan Show (which Gaffigan and his wife recently left to spend more time with their family), is thrilled to be joining Noah Hawley and co:

Season 3 of Fargo is starting production now, and is due for release in 2017.

Doctor Strange Gets Great Early Reviews

Doctor Strange news has been a bit thin on the ground in the the run up to its release. Benedict Cumberbatch‘s debut into the Marvel universe was released in the U.K. this week, and will open Stateside next weekend, however critics are already talking about it… and they really like it!

Currently, the film is at 93% on review compendium Rotten Tomatoes, denoting similar quality to other MCU favourites Avengers Assemble (92%), Guardians of the Galaxy (91%) and Iron Man (94%). The site, which forms an aggregate score based on both reviewer and audience opinion, has always found Marvel films to rate higher than DC films, where latest outings such as Suicide Squad floundered with a score of 26%.

The reviews are very complimentary about the tone of the movie:

“Yes, Doctor Strange will change the tone of Marvel movies going forward, and that’s a very good thing.”

                            – Rich Cline, Contactmusic.com

the visuals:

“Visually, this is Inception dialled up to eleven, a world-bending, shape-shifting and time-distorting Escher painting filled with heroes and villains duelling over the possibility of immortality.”

                     -Tom Glasson, Concrete Playground

and the leading man:

“Cumberbatch fits Doctor Strange like a pair of snap-tight surgical gloves, in yet another MCU triumph. Beautifully designed, brilliantly executed.”

                                – James Mottram, Total Film

It certainly looks like Marvel Studios might have another hit on their hands, and I’ll be interested to see where it enters the box office charts after its first major weekend. Will the fans love it as much as the critics?

Supernatural SN12 E3 – The Foundry

spn1

I sat down to write this review immediately after The Show was over last night, but the words wouldn’t come.  I had a severe and crippling attack of Sentit Contritum.  Don’t know what that is?  If I have to explain the jokes to you, they aren’t nearly as funny. (It’s Latin for broken feels… feel free to use it in any conversation about The Show.)

See, I wasn’t prepared for the sucker punch at the end of the episode.  I mean, it was a routine MotW episode.  I was cracking jokes the whole time.  Once, I even said “The family that hunts together stays together”, so yeah, I’m the one that jinxed it famdom… blame it all on me.

Last night, I had someone besides Lucy watching “with” me.  DJ wasn’t in the room with me, but he was texting with me throughout the episode, so I’m gonna include him in my watch party people.  Now, I like to start The Show a little late, ya know pause live TV at the beginning of things and then I can fast forward through the commercials.  DJ doesn’t do that, so he was a little bit ahead of Lucy and me. (yes, it’s supposed to be me not I; go google it).  So, I had just informed the millennial couple that had walked into the creepy house that they were gonna die, ya know cause they’re in the first two minutes of Supernatural, when I got DJ’s first text… “Holy creepy baby dolls, Batman!”  I quickly fired off a text letting him know I was a few minutes behind so he wouldn’t throw any spoilers my way.  So his next text was just simply … “Oh trust me.  Creepiness abounds.”  That’s the truest truth, I think I’ve ever heard…. truly.  (The last one was too much wasn’t it?  But, c’mon ya’ll knew I was gonna do it.)

Mama Mary found a case in a (gasp) newspaper.  The Boys agree it’s something and suddenly the game was afoot.  I loved the scene with Dean sharing his favorite road food choices with Mom.  He was so very excited to be sharing those moments with his mom.  I should’ve realized what was coming then.  I should’ve started building the protective wall around my feels right then, but I was enjoying watching The Winchesters hunt together.  The baddie was a ghost that was freezing the hearts of its victims.  After Mary got locked in the room with the creepy baby doll and the ghost of a young boy, The Boys got all protective and left her at the motel while they continued to investigate the case.  Their answer was to salt and burn the bones, of course… because that’s always the answer, right?  Not this time.  Mary didn’t like being sidelined and went back to the creepy house… and broke the first rule of horror!  She went into the basement!  Now, when I was discussing that point with DJ after The Show, he was quick to remind me… “That’s pretty much their thing though, right?”  Again… more truth.

Sprinkled throughout the scenes of The Winchester Family Hunt, we were treated with scenes of what Lucifer and Rowena were up to, and Crowley and Castiel on their own hunt…. to find Lucifer.  C2’s hunt gave us the best and funniest part of the show.  Castiel’s fake agent alias… Agent Beyonce… which of course made Crowley Agent Z.

Kudos to Rowena!  I mean, I love her anyway (Ruthie is da bomb!) but last night, she pulled one over on the Devil himself… you go girl!  Or as Lucifer called her… you Ginger Bitch!  Iggy Pop indeed!  I was really happy to see Rick Springfield being more like the Pellegrino version of Luci…. I just hate that this probably means that when next we see the fallen archangel he’ll probably be in a different vessel.  Bye, Rick…. you will be missed.

Now, here’s where we get to the bad case of Sentit Contritum.  Once The Winchesters got back to the bunker…. I got sucker punched!  I mean there’s nothing else you can call it.  Mary’s pronouncement … man, that hurt.  My reaction mirrored Dean’s.  He didn’t blink… and somehow managed not to cry, just angrily stepped back when she reached out for him.  Jensen played that so well.  You could see the pain radiating off of Dean in waves.  And Jared!  Sam was all clinical scientific nerd… trying to analyze the whys and the wherefores … and coming to some sort of understanding of the facts as she presented them.  I don’t get it.  Now, I know, maybe things would be different if I’d been dropped back into my daughters’ lives 33 years after I’d died…. but I just can’t see myself leaving my girls…. again.  I just wanted to grab Mary and shake some sense into her… Samantha Smith played that scene soooo f’n great!

Next week, some creepy Children of the Corn type people ask Sam and Dean if they know God.  Yeah, if you didn’t laugh at that preview, then there’s seriously something wrong with your sense of humor.

Arrow SN5 E4 – Penance

Hey there! Welcome to your weekly recap of Arrow. My name’s Jess and I’ll be taking you through the weekly adventures  of Team Arrow in our beloved Star City. Let’s get started!

—Flashback—

As part of Oliver’s initiation into the Bratva, he has another test to pass: get information out of a money-launderer, Pyotr Friedkin, who is about to be arraigned. Anatoly spritzes Oliver with eau de drunk, aka alcohol, and Oliver kicks a police car in order to get arrested as a day drunkard. Oliver ends up in the same cell as Friedkin, who passes up the IP address of Kovar thanks to Oliver’s threats and a quick windpipe punch. With the information he needs, Oliver snaps Friedkin’s neck. The Russian guards ask how he died, to which Oliver blames a drunken fall. The next morning Oliver is released from the cell, so he reports back to Anatoly, who congratulates him for passing the third test: trusting the Bratva and following orders. They both take a swig of Russian liquor, ending the flashback.

—Present—

Artemis, Wild Dog and Curtis go on a mission to capture a known associate of Tobias Church. The mission doesn’t go as planned, per usual, as Wild Dog fires his gun multiple times missing the target, instead of letting Artemis shoot the target with an arrow as originally planned. The target ends up kicking Curtis’ butt, until Oliver swoops in delivering a swift arrow to the  target’s knee. Oliver then takes off, leaving the team to deliver the man and his loot to the SCPD.

Rory having not showed up for the mission after receiving 20 texts from Felicity, finally shows up to talk to Oliver at the base. He lets Oliver know that he cannot continue being a part of the team as Felicity is a constant reminder of the loved ones he lost due to the impossible decision she had to make.

Oliver and Lyla come up with a plan to break Diggle out of prison. Felicty strongly objects, going to far as to send Artemis, Wild Dog and Curtis to stop Oliver from passing on a road. Unfortunately for them, Oliver quickly disarms them and continues on his way. Oliver penetrates the prison with Lyla’s help, knocking out guards until he finds Diggle’s cell, sneaking inside before Diggle gets back. Diggle finally agrees to let Oliver help him escape which they do with the help of an anti-molecular compound which disintegrates the floor of Diggle’s cell. Strapped to harnesses on the roof of the prison building, Diggle and Oliver catch a ride from a plane flown by Lyla. Oliver then takes Diggle and Lula to a H.I.V.E. safe house.

During Oliver’s escapade, Quentin and Adrian were personally delivering the loot to the SCPD evidence room. Just when they finish placing the evidence inside, the case starts vibrating loudly, exploding and taking a chunk of wall with it. The bomb allows Church and his crew to break into the evidence room and steal weapons and equipment. Quentin and Adrian barely escape before two grenades go off inside, covering Church’s exit.

Realizing that the team desperately needs Rory’s help, Felicity talks to him face-to-face, trying to reconcile their issue. Rory says that for now it’s too difficult to work with her, to which Felicity responds that they’ll always be there whenever he wants to return. Back at the base, Felicity determines that Church plans on assaulting the SCPD’s anti-crime unit where Adrian is currently interrogating the man Team Arrow captured. With Oliver gone, Felicity is hesitant to send the trio out alone to help, but Rory shows up and she agrees to let them go.

Together they manage to rescue everyone inside, sparing them from Church and his associates, but not before Curtis is injured. In order to buy the team time to escape, Wild Dog fights Church, but Church overpowers him, capturing him and torturing him back at his base of operations.

The rest of the team regroups at Arrow headquarters, Oliver finally returning too. Felicity struggles to find any trace of Wild Dog’s whereabouts, and a determined Oliver swears that they will rescue him.

—Next week on Arrow—

What’re your thoughts on this week’s episode? Do you think Team Arrow will save Wild Dog? If they do, will everyone make it out? Comment below or tweet me @SohoDoll. Until next time, “My name is Oliver Queen and I will save this city!”

The ‘Survivor: Millennials Vs Gen-X’ Review – “The Truth Works Well”

For a show-Mance that dominated much of this seasons front half, Figgy’s elimination has clearly divided season 33 between the early game and the latter stages. Leaving contestants that have somewhat been over-looked to perhaps dominate going forward.

After being down in numbers on The Millennials Tribe, Zeke and Adam made moves that look to pay off, while Hannah – who had been missing for weeks now – suddenly came into focus as a nuisance for Michaela.

While Hannah probably did suck in the Immunity Challenge, Michaela losing her cool seemed unwise. Remember when Hannah begged someone to “use” her vote?

Michaela better hope that Hannah bares no ill-will for Challenge-shaming her this week.

Adam on the other hand had a dilemma. Vote off either one of Figg-Tails and run afoul of the Millennials wrath. Or take out Ken and run the risk of upsetting the Survivorcasuals.

Tricky-Tricky

survivor-millennials-vs-gen-x

Of course voting off Figgs was the right move here. Even if Michaela voiced her opinion at the end of the Immunity Challenge that Millennials need to keep their numbers. I don’t where she thinks she is in the Tri-Force Alliance but she seems late on the update that the game has changed.

While Adam ultimately choose to go with Ken and Jess, leaving Tails out in the cold. We also got hints over on the new Vanau Tribe that Zeke plans to Bro-down with Gen-X David and Chris.

His decision to turn his back on Michelle would be proved correct when Figgy was delighted to see her Millennial gal-pal had survived the last vote.

Oh she was happy to see Zeke too … but, you know, she “loves” Michelle apparently. And who can blame her when she saved her butt in week 2.

Damn you Michelle, I’m still salty.

survivor-millennials-vs-gen-x

Anyway, that not-so subtle hint that Zeke perhaps was at the bottom of his previous Tribe didn’t escape him. But how he didn’t realise this after Mari got blindsided I do not know. But still, with Adam and Zeke making alliances with people outside the age-divide, has me convinced that these pair are the ones to watch going forward.

With Idols floating around however we may be in for a bumpy ride. And with Jay finding Ikabulas Hidden Immunity it now means there are three Idols now in play.

And with Michaela promising to keep her mouth shut (for now) after she walked in on Jay and Will celebrating. Our favourite narrator may have just fallen into the power position come the Merge.

I can’t wait!

Andrew Garfield returns as Spiderman on Jimmy Kimmel Live!

Andrew Garfield was, to me, by far the best Spiderman, so obviously I was very upset when I learned that he would no longer be the web slinging, cocky hero he so artfully portrayed. But it seems he is not yet ready to hang up the Spidey suite just yet.

Last night on Jimmy Kimmel live, the wonderful Mr. Garfield, while promoting his new movie, pulled off a few more stunts for the people, showing that he deserves and is the best Spiderman out there.

During the interview on Jimmy Kimmel, the hero was asked when the suit was last worn. “It was last night,” responded Garfield, “No two nights ago, while brushing my teeth. Just a ritual, keeping the flame burning as long as I possibly can.” ^_^

Daredevil Episode 20 – Semper Fidelis

Picking up where the last episode left off, Nelson & Murdock has taken on Frank Castle’s case. The episode begins with a good montage where possible jurors all explain different opinions on the Punisher. This works because it is believable – realistically, there would be people who support vigilante justice and people who shun it. The trial is troubling as Castle obviously committed the murders. However, he refuses to give an insanity plea. He doesn’t consider lying about PTSD an insult to himself, he considers it an insult to those who suffer from it, pretty clever character development.

Matters are not helped by Matt’s double life. It should be noted, this episode has has a lot of Daredevil in action. He and Elektra are battling the Japanese mafia in what are some pretty intense action scenes. Operating as Daredevil causes problems when Matt is late for court. After a long time of Foggy begrudgingly sharing the secret, he finally loses it and the issue begins to truly drive a wedge between the two.

Elektra is proving to be more of a toxic personality as she’s also driving a wedge between Matt and Karen. This is one part I have mixed feelings about. On one hand this is good drama as Elektra is making Murdock’s life more complicated. On the other hand, Matt and Karen’s relationship STILL feels underdeveloped. There’s a bit of a “this is still going on?” vibe to it.

Overall, this was a great episode. It is not perfect, but it feels like the total package. Every major character has a big moment – whether it be Castle’s psychology or Foggy and Karen showing a little more personality – and the episode hardly has any wasted time.
