Fifty Shades Darker Trailer Dropped

For those that were entranced in the first installment of the “Fifty Shades” trilogy, you will be excited to know that “Fifty Shades Darker” the second installment will be released just before Valentines on February 10, 2017.

In this film emotions run deeper and darker as the title says.  Christian (Jamie Dornan) struggles with his inner demons, while Anastasia (Dakota Johnson) deals with her own envy and jealousy for the women Christian had before her. The young business man continues to use his power to control, by buying up the company Anastasia works for, freezes the accounts of her boss to prevent a business trip with his submissive, and even fires the man for attempting to seduce Ana.

Elena (the woman who introduced Christian to the BDSM lifestyle when he was just 15 years old) learns that Christian is beginning to see Anastasia more as a girlfriend and not just a submissive and becomes antagonistic toward her. In addition to Mrs. Robinson (Elena), Ana is faced challenges from prior submissives.

I expect this movie to be as intriguing as the first as the plot thickens. So, if you’re a couple that is looking for something new to surprise your partner with for Valentines next year, maybe you can plan something special and Fifty Shades Darker themed for a little excitement! Hmmmm….I might do the same! (wink) Until then I’ll leave you with the trailer, check it out!

Will Ferrell Bails On Indie Film Days Before Filming BeginS

With just less than two weeks to begin filming the Indie film, “Captain Dad”, Will Ferrell decided to drop out and bail on this project. It’s been almost a week since he made this decision and still no one knows the reason why! Producers are currently looking for a replacement, but it still a challenge with Ferrell’s unexpected departure. It is unclear on how this will affect the filming schedule since they were due to begin principle shooting on Sept 26th. However, this is not the first time that this comedic star has done this in the past year. Earlier this year in April, he backed out of a comedy film centered around Ronald Reagan’s battle with Alzheimer’s.

Now there will still be lots of opportunities for Will Ferrell fans to see him as you will be able to find him on both The Lego Movie sequel and Daddy’s Home two. Movies With Mitch – ‘Blair Witch’ Review

Viral marketing and clever advertising saw The Blair Witch Project (1999) become the most successful independent horror film of its generation. Its blurred lines between reality and fiction popularised ‘the found footage’ genre, capitalizing on audiences who voyeuristically lapped up the struggles of Joshua Leonard, Michael Williams and Heather Donahue as they ran around screaming in the Black Hills Forest.

It would be reasonable to assume that no creative team would be able to recapture the lighting in a bottle that was the first. An assumption that was more than proven correct when the ill-conceived Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 (2000) failed to impressed anyone upon release. Putting any hope for further instalment on the back-burner indefinitely.

Until now.

Perhaps it would only have taken the unique eye of You’re Next’s (2011) Director Adam Wingard to bring Blair Witch kicking-and-screaming into the 21st century. And my-my is there a lot of screaming.

Blair Witch is simple in its execution, a bunch of 20-somthings enter the famed Black Hill’s woods in the hopes of finding protagonist James Donahue’s (James Allen McCune) sister alive. Of course this being a horror film nothing much goes to plan. I mean why would it, where would the fun be in that?

But to reveal much more would ruin the thrills that lurk in-between the trees.

What I can giveaway is how close this new flick sticks to the source material. In following the roadmap laid by the 90’s original brings a sense of nostalgia for fans of the hand-held original but does open Wingards sequel to easy criticism for lazy storytelling.

While the characters motivations make sense to a sequel – with James search for his sister proving powerful for an audience member familiar with Heather’s story – few characters truly land. Beyond James’ love interest Lisa (Callie Hernandez), who is documenting her would-be-boyfriend for her film class, the others seemingly amount to canon fonder as the scares mount and the intensity grows.

What differentiates the third instalment in the now growing franchise, is the intention behind the film. If the first was about being lost, the second … well … being bad. The third is about being pursued by an unseen threat – although we do get glimpses this time around – which utilises the cannon fodder characters to raise the stacks as survival becomes an ever illusive hope.

As the third instalment we appropriately get reminders of the lore that surrounds the Blair Witch as well new information that expands upon the established mythos, while also raising new questions throughout. It is also to Wingards credit that the film also retroactively brings closure to Project-fans wonderings such as where that spooky house came from and why the original Trio just couldn’t get out of the woods even though the followed that darn creek?

There is also a simple explanation as the shortening days that victims experience once they enter the forest that has a profound WTF moment right before the credits roll.

But Spoilers

Blair Witch is unapologetically nostalgic for the original but isn’t afraid to put a fresh new gloss over the flakey paint of its predecessor. If you can overlook the fact that Wingard does tread familiar ground while borrowing a few of the old tricks at the same time. You will be rewarded by an engrossing thriller that once it gets started refuses to let up until the last camera rolls.

MacGyver SN1 E1 – The Rising

macgyver-2016

Just a friendly warning…. this review may contain spoilers!!

I will admit that I went into this as a skeptic.  I mean, I was absolutely sure that there was no way that this reboot would be as good as the original.  In fact, I was completely pissed off that they would even dare to touch something that I loved so much as a kid.  But, then as time went on and I saw more and more promos and trailers for the show, I had to admit that they were wearing me down.  I was happy to learn that Lee David Zlotoff (the creator of the original series) and Henry Winkler (who was an executive producer on the original) were going to be involved with this version. That’s when I was willing to give it a fair shot.  In fact, I can tell you the exact moment that the scales were tipped in this reboot’s favor.  It was the moment I saw this trailer on CBS….

100% reason to remember the name indeed.

There were a few predictable moments.  In fact, when Nikki got shot, I totally said “She’s not really dead.  We’ll see her again.”  I have witnesses…and I was right.

There were a ton of nods to the original series, too.  Including the aforementioned Nikki.  Nikki Carpenter was a character in the original, although she didn’t turn out to be a back stabber in that one.  There were plenty of paper clip and duct tape moments to keep any fan of the original series smiling.  There were characters from the old show, like Bozer (played by Richard Donner in the original) is Mac’s room mate in this new version.  The biggest one actually made me chuckle in happiness.  Remember the iconic pic of Richard Dean Anderson’s MacGyver with the missile thrown over one shoulder?  Here I’ll help ya out….

original mac.jpg

We got a shot of Lucas Till in the same pose.  That may have been the best moment of the show for me.  But, I’m going to have to let this one grow on me.  George Eads was the best part of this show, and he’s not the title character… that says something about this reboot and it’s not good.  Maybe once I get used to Lucas Till as opposed to RDA as MacGyver, I’ll be a bigger fan.  I’m holding out hope that we’ll see a return of the original Mac’s biggest nemesis … Murdoc (played by Michael Des Barres in the classic version).

I will say that if you never watched the original and you like to see them blow stuff up… then you’ll love this show.  Me?  I’m still reserving judgement.

I just can’t help it.  Richard Dean Anderson was one of my first big crushes when I was a kid.  Don’t judge me!  So, it’s going to take more than Lucas Till wielding a paper clip and a Swiss Army Knife for me to consider him MacGyver.

But, I’ll give the kid a chance.

Scrubs Creator To Launch Space Comedy

Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence is teaming up with his Undatables collaborator Adam Sztykiel for a new NBC single camera comedy. Spaced Out will be a workplace comedy (similar to Scrubs) but this time set in the not to distant future, where commercial space travel is available.

No cast are confirmed yet, however I’d put money on Lawrence’s wife Christa Miller popping up at some point. If Lawrence’s previous outings are anything to go by (as well as Scrubs and Undatables, Lawrence created Spin City and Cougar Town) he could be looking at another hit.

Space comedies appear to be in vogue at the moment, with Family Guy mastermind Seth McFarlane launching a space-based comedy drama on Fox next year.

Imogen Poots Cast in I Kill Giants Movie

Toronto Film Festival gave us some great upcoming movie scoops this year- particularly for comic book fans. The Internet was awash with stories about the latest Guardians of the Galaxy film, and Variety has reported that rising star Imogen Poots (That Awkward Moment) has been cast in upcoming comic adaptation I Kill Giants. The film will also star GotG leading lady Zoe Salanda and teen sweetheart Madison Wolfe (True Detective).

The film is based on the 2008 Image comic by Joe Kelly (who also wrote the screenplay) and J. M. Ken Niimura. The story focuses on a geeky outsider called Barbara (Wolfe) who escapes into a world of fantasy. Barbara is a great young female protagonist, especially for people who don’t quite feel like they fit in.

Salanda will play Barbara’s school psychologist Ms Molle, and it has not yet been reported what role Poots will play. The film will be directed by award winning Danish film maker Anders Walter.

I Kill Giants is due to start filming in late September, and due for release in 2017.
