Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D SN4 EP01- ‘The Ghost’

Ghost rider made his fiery debut in a spectacular episode that flipped the status-quo yet again.

Agents of Shield is back, and it’s back with a vengeance. After what felt like a very intimate Season 3, very much focused on threats the Agents had created for themselves, the opening episode for Season 4 makes its position known straight away. It’s going to be bigger, better and bolder.

The new direction the show is going in, is in no small part thanks to its later timeslot. Sure we all panicked when that move was initially announced, worrying it spelled doom for the show (it still could), but just from one episode you can tell the show has benefitted greatly from it. The brilliant opening scene said it all. The use of flames to shroud Ghost Rider’s initial appearance in mystery made him extremely menacing, a feeling amplified as blood spattered about the scene. This was just the first instance of the merits of the new timeslot. Increased gore, so long as it isn’t gratuitous, adds to the sense of gritty realism the show has been perfecting throughout its run. Somehow, the past has seen a multitude of melting and disintegrating bodies, as well as a character’s head being peeled open, but blood has been weirdly absent. I don’t know the specifics of what can be shown when on TV, but it’s nice to see the show lose some restraints.

What was most surprising about this episode was just how much it disturbed the status quo…again. We’ve seen this happen time and again, but the one constant was that the team was (usually) all together. Not now though. The team has splintered as a result of the meddling new Director, who’s no doubt going to be a thorn in our sides all season, and as such the relationships carefully crafted over 3 seasons are fracturing, secrecy and mistrust poisoning them. This is most clear with Simmons’ new position as ‘Scientific Advisor to the Director’. Though she says she’s trying to remain in control of things, her close position to a man clearly intent on keeping the old group apart makes her hard to trust. Neither May nor Fitz trust her with pretty big secrets, whilst I’m certain Coulson would’ve told Fitz about Daisy had Simmons not been with him. It’s a situation that will no doubt cause drama throughout the season, and it’s exciting because it’s not really something the show has done before. Coulson never had to deal with procedure so much with Nick Fury as his best friend, so to have someone so close to him instigating rules he doesn’t necessarily agree with will be a big issue for him.

The show did a lot of world building this episode, introducing us to several new characters, whilst providing tantalising updates on existing ones. After a full episode focusing on them last season, The Watchdogs sort of fizzled away until Hive used them as Guinea Pigs. Now it seems they’re controlling half the criminal underworld, possibly in line to be the season’s next big bad. I say possibly because there are several contenders for that position. Ghost Rider is clearly going to be a target for Shield, but probably the most exciting reveal to come from the episode was that SHIELD is going all in on the supernatural this season, with what looks to be an actual ghost. It’s still unclear exactly what she makes people do, but given she’s now on the loose, and the fact that May has been affected by her means it likely won’t be long before we find out.

The highlight of the episode though was the fight between Ghost Rider and Daisy. Before the two sussed one another out, there seemed to be a few sparks flying, specifically from Robbie, but this was soon eclipsed by the fight. The full reveal of Ghost Rider is something we’ve been waiting to see since he was announced. Many wider Marvel fans scoffed at the idea of Ghost Rider being one justice on a TV budget, but these are likely people who stopped watching close to the beginning when the VFX were still evolving with the show. Since then we’ve been subject to some real visual treats, such as the Hive reveal, and the aforementioned melting bodies. The visuals did an excellent job at conveying the pain behind Robbie’s transformation. His skin is burning right off, and the look in his eyes expertly signalled how painful the process was for him. With the transformation complete, it was impossible even for non-believers to scoff at what they had seen. Everything from the billowing flames to the movement of the skull was expert, and left me eager to see more. What’s nice is that he also posed a true danger to Daisy. Other than when she first received them, we’ve never really seen Daisy drained by her powers, so it being brought up here will likely factor into her return to Shield. However even with the injuries, Ghost Rider was presented as a truly formidable threat.

The look into Daisy’s psyche in general was good. There has been much speculation as to why she left Shield. It was clear it had something to do with Lincoln’s death, but to learn she severed all ties so that she had nothing else to lose was heart breaking. Shield is family to her, so for her to reach a point where she can no longer face them speaks to the effects of last season upon her. In fact, the effects of last season lingered throughout the episode. Not only the Sokovia Accords, but the deaths of Lincoln and Andrew have made such an impact, that the smartest guy on the team is risking everything to build an intelligence that is bound to go rogue. That being said, Shield does a brilliant job at subverting our expectations, so I’m confident that the Aida subplot won’t follow traditional AI story structure.

S.H.I.E.L.D Zephyr One Report Log_Events of Interest and Enquiry:

  • The chemistry between Mack and Yo-Yo has always been fun, but it really stood out this episode. It felt like Yo-Yo has become much more free spirited, whilst Mack has returned to his roots as a stickler for the rules.

  • The rapport between Fitz and Dr Radcliffe continues to be one of the strongest elements of the show.

  • Speaking of Dr Radcliffe and Yo-Yo, I hope their significant presence within the premiere is an indication that they will be around a lot for this season.

  • Agent Piper returned! No big ass gun this time, but hopefully we’ll see her more often as well.

  • Loved hearing Aida say she’d be a Shield. Given how alive she is no doubt that will ignite debates of morality.

  • Got a glimpse of the relationship between Robbie and his brother, but not enough on either of them yet really to justify what he’s doing. Which is fine, as at the moment the show is painting him to be more of a villain.

  • Have I seen the hula girl ornament that was on Daisy’s dashboard before? It rings a bell but I’m just not sure.

Overall this was a fantastic premiere episode for ‘Agents of Shield’s’ 4th season. Ghost Rider was the main concern going into this, but the visuals were stellar, making him a mix of awe inspiring and just plain formidable. After so long together it was somewhat jarring to see the team so splintered, but at the same time makes sense to push us and them into unfamiliar territory. It will be interesting to see how the team dynamics play out with this newfound level of secrecy amongst them all. With some unexpected surprises and tantalising teases displayed, you can bet that this season is gonna be on fire.

Big Bang Theory Season 10 Premiere- The Conjugal Conjecture

After a review of the Season 9 finale the  hilarity ensues. Sheldon is talking to Leonard through the wall, about the thought of them being step brothers and what Leonard’s father and Sheldon’s mother are doing.

Penny wants Leonard to play dumb about what their parents did. Leonard’s mother doesn’t want to go to the wedding even if they threw it together for her.

Howard was slammed with a ticket for driving fast. Raj runs to get the door and its a stranger. He needs to see Howard and Raj is terrified, as he thinks it is something bad.  The man gives him his card and judges Raj because Raj pretends to not  speak English well.

Penny is driving her father, mother, and brother back home. They are clearly an interesting family. After being released from jail Penny’s Brother is at odds with his mother. She loves him clearly but she just wants him to make better choices. Wyatt just wants everyone to calm down.

Leonard and Sheldon are with their families. Sheldon is trying to figure out who can stay with who. The math of this show really can be so interesting as it really plays into the humor.

Wyatt and Penny are a great father and daughter pair. Wyatt enjoys drinking and after seeing his wife and her energy one can see why. Leonard and his mother go across the hall to meet Penny’s family.

Sheldon and Amy are with Leonard’s father and his mother. Sheldon is angry at both of them.

Howard calls the general back to talk to him. The general asks about Raj’s immigration record and Raj tells him not to say anything. He will meet the general to talk to him in an upcoming episode.

The wedding really looks beautiful. As Stuart comes in he has an awkward moment with Leonard’s parents. When Wyatt gives Penny away he tells him not to give Penny’s brother money.

Bernadette is officiating and really doing a great job. She has quite the Mrs.Wolowitz vibe going on. Penny and Leonard recite their vows, and they are truly beautiful.

Leonard’s parents may not get along, but they both know they have raised a great son. Sheldon speaks from his heart about Leonard and Penny. After they kiss he awkardly hugs them. With Sheldon it is always two steps forward and one step forward but at least he means well.

Penny, Sheldon, and Leonard drive their parents to the airport. The aftermath of the events lead each of them to feel exasperated by the whole situation. So much tension drove this episode but it was necessary.

While not the funniest episode it was a sweet one. Penny and Leonard are finally married and we were introduced to characters we have been hearing about for a long time. I really do enjoy that they are showing new characters after so long. Excited to see the Military Miniaturization next week!

New Girl, Season 6 Premiere, “House Hunt”

https://i2.wp.com/images.tvfanatic.com/iu/s--HsHSjcUd--/t_xlarge_l/f_auto,fl_lossy,q_75/v1474146647/nick-returns-new-girl.jpg

After a recap of Season 5 things are changing for the New Girl crew. Schmidt and Cece are trying to buy a house. Winston and his lady friend are forced to talk over Skype as she is training. Jess is freaking out because Nick is with his girlfriend Reagan and not her.

Schmidt and Cece are trying to move out with the help of Allie’s sister but she is a terrible real estate agent. Jess wants to jump in and help them but they really want to do it themselves as a couple.

Nick comes back to the loft to find it empty. The actor Jake Johnson is a lot thinner then he has been in past seasons another cool thing about the evolution of Tv series. Humorously he calls for everyone before calling for Cece. Jess is bothering Cece and Schmidt because she is really inserting herself into this decision. Cece finally tells Jess what she needs to hear but Jess isn’t hearing it. She does leave as Schmidt goes to use the house’s stove.

Winston tells Allie’s sister the news that Schmidt and Cece fired her. Winston lies to her, and tells her that he is buying a home. Clearly a recipe for disaster.

Jess comes back to the loft to see Nick home. Nick is doing the long distance thing with Reagan. When Nick wants to spend time with her she lies to get out of it. Jess goes to Cece for help and finally tells them that she does love Nick.

Winston and Allie’s sister are still looking for a house in the lie Winston has set up. She finds him a boat which is not anything Winston would ever want. Winston always ends up in weird situations because he is just too nice.

Nick comes to the bank to help Schmidt and Cece with a loan. With their bar as collateral they are able to get a big loan. Clearly the amount of money they will need to repay is going to change things. Jess decides to deal with this like an adult.

Winston tells Allie her sister is stupid. She ends the call a little more abruptly then Winston would have liked. As he closes the laptop he sees Jess looking dejected. Jess tells him she needs to tell him something. She first tells him Nick is back which makes him jump for joy. Then she tells him she still loves Nick.

Winston helps her knock on his door so Jess can be try to be friends with him again. Nick completed his novel in New Orleans and it is dedicated to her.

Schmidt and Cece didn’t buy the big house and bought the fixer upper. This will be a big focal point of the series I am sure. They begin knocking down the walls to see whats hidden behind and find a fireplace. They cheers to this discovery and the family of friends is happy.

Really a sturdy premiere. It had a lot of laughs and a lot of exposition for the future adventures. It told us what has happened to our cast and how they have been doing over the summer. It set itself up for the season ahead by pointing out big threads that will run through the season. I can’t wait for next week’s episode “Hubbedy Bubbedy”

He’s Back, Our Handsome Devil Returns in Lucifer SN2 EP1 “Everything’s Coming Up Lucifer”

lucifer-season-2

Our Handsome Devil last night (Monday 19th Sept 2016) returned to our screens and I don’t mind telling you it was the highlight of my Monday evening, even though that makes me sound incredibly old and boring. Don’t know about you little devils, but I am really looking forward to seeing where this season will take us, especially with the addition of new characters. Thought it would be a good idea to refresh our minds and recap where we left Lucifer in episode 13.

Recap Season 1 Episode 13

SN1 EP13 – “Take Me Back to Hell”

Lucifer (Tom Ellis) is framed for the murder of Jacob Williams (Even Arnold), Chole (Lauren German) orders Lucifer to come peacefully, but he refuses and says she is just like the rest of them and invites them to shoot him. Lucifer confronts a rookie and reaches into his pocket, the rookie panics, and shoots. Lucifer disappears, and Chole sends offers to search the area. Lucifer finds himself on the roof with Amenadiel ( D.B. Woodside). Lucifer complains that Amenadiel has ruined things yet again and tells him he is done with earth and for Amenadiel to take him back to Hell.

Malcolm (Kevin Rankin) arrives as the CSI team is bagging and tagging evidence at Lux and confronts Dan (Kevin Alejandro) about what happened to Lucifer and is told that he just disappeared and is now on the run. Chloe pulls Dan aside and expresses that she believes Lucifer is innocent, however Dan isn’t convinced. When an officer finds what appears to be the murder weapon, Dan figures that Lucifer’s prints will be on the gun… but he’s innocent. Chole finds out that Dan was the one who shot Malcolm and that he did it to protect her. Lucifer and Amenadiel are on the hunt to find Malcolm which leads them to a funeral home. Chole and Maze (Lesley-Ann Brandt) go to Malcolm’s house and break in , when they suddenly they find themselves under fire, the shooter is Malcolm’s wife who said he has changed since coming back to life.

Lucifer and Amenadiel head to the brewery and split up to cover more ground, Malcolm finds Amenadiel and stabs him with the demon dagger  which he took from Lux. Lucifer arrives and Amenadiel collapses and tells Lucifer to go after Malcolm, Maze shows up and realizes that Amenadiel was attacked with one of her blades. Maze uses a feather she took from Lucifer’s wings to heal Amenadiel. Dan turns himself in and Chole get a call and Malcolm has Trixie, and if she wants her back alive then he wants his money back. Chole meets him alone at the hangar, She gets Trixie back and tells her to hide till she can come find her again. A paper airplane lands at Malcolm’s feet allowing Chole to run off,  Malcolm shoots Lucifer and as he is dying he talks to God and says he will do whatever he wants as long as Chole is protected. Lucifer finds himself back in hell and he walks through the corridors to a room,  and he realizes that it’s open, with that he is returned to the hanger floor and finds Chole who has pumped Malcolm full of bullets. Lucifer shaken by what he has seen goes home to find Amenadiel snoring on the couch but no sign of Maze, he tells his brother someone has escaped Hell…. Who has escaped Lucifer?  He replies…. Mom!

lucifer-201-10-600x400

Amenadiel needs to put Chloe off Lucifer’s scent, so he decides to confront her with the “truth” about Lucifer, but she needs to see it understand it. Amenadiel fires a gun into his stomach while standing in front of her…but then revealing a bulletproof  vest and blood pack. He went on to say that because of their rough childhood, Lucifer created his “Devil” persona as a way of coping, and his “power” is one “of suggestion”. Lucifer sees Dr. Martin again and tells her a little more of his family From Mom and Dad getting together resulting  in “the Big Bang” to Dad’s tinkering with humanity in the shed (the Garage), to Lucifer being neglected and kicked out of the home. The prodigal demon Maze resurfaces just in time to kick some ass, When asked about her disappearing act she isn’t very forthcoming with information, her disappearance coincided with Mom’s escape…. Did Maze let her free? It appears not but how surprised she was to learn mother dearest had escaped. The only thing Maze said of her disappearance is that she was with a friend who is helping her sort through her own issues, now they are stuck on Earth. Lucifer serenades us on the ivory with “All Along The Watch Tower” he’s hot and he can sing! A New Jumanji Photo Has Been Released, And Karen Gillan Looks Hot

Kevin Hart posted a picture on his Instagram account yesterday of a promo picture for the upcoming sequel to Jumanji:

jumanji-sequel

The picture shows Dwayne ‘The Rock‘ Johnson as Doctor Bravestone and Karen Gillan as Martha, along with Kevin Hart and Jack Black – whose characters are yet to be revealed. I’m sure our male readers will agree that Karen Gillan looks especially nice in this picture; you just know she’s going to look amazing in 3D with that outfit!

It brings to mind the mini-skirts she would often wear as Amy Pond in Doctor Who:

6f61862f794ceb42428302780ff6cc62

It’s also interesting to note that Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart and Jack Black all look to be dressed in jungle gear whereas Karen Gillan’s outfit is more casual. Does this mean the three men are characters who are already trapped in the game and it’s up to Martha to rescue them by rolling the dice? Well, Dwayne Johnson has said on his Instagram account that Martha is ‘in many ways the most important role in the movie’ so it is possible…

Jumanji will be released in cinemas on 28th July 2017. The plot isn’t known for the film at present but it is said that it will honour Robin Williams’ character Alan Parrish in some form.

Supernatural S12 Sneak Peek

You may have heard a tremendously loud and horrendously long squee earlier today.  It may or may not have been me.

Don’t judge me!

This was the sneak peek I’ve been waiting on.  It was a true joy to behold.  And, I’m really not sure what my favorite part of it is exactly, but Dean appearing to be trying to break loose from his chains to save the bad guys from his mom is probably somewhere at the top of the list.  Mary is perhaps more of a BAMF than Dean… and that’s saying something!

I love her already.

They have been giving us little tidbits throughout Hellatus.  They’ve teased us with the return of Adam Rose as Aaron Bass and fan favorite Kim Rhodes as Sheriff Jody Mills.  They’ve told us there will be a fight against Hitler and a Hunter’s Wake (with the death of someone close to The Boys).  And, Kim Rhodes tweeted this today…

kim-tweet

I could be wrong… but that sounds a lot like a goodbye.  Now, don’t get me wrong, Kim is always very cryptic about her appearances on The Show and insisting on using #NotASpoiler or a derivative thereof, but this time… I just don’t know.  But, let me assure all of you that I will have the pitchforks at the ready and the torches lit if any of you Wayward Daughters wanna join me as we march on The Castle.

At the time of this writing there is 23 days, 2 hours, 8 minutes, and 5 seconds until the end of Hellatus!  But who’s counting?

Reign, Season 4 SPOILERS and premiere date pushed back to 2017

Not sure if there are many spoilers since Mary Stuart was really the Scottish Queen who ruled from 1542-1567.  Nonetheless, Season 4 of the CW historical romance/drama Reign will return sometime in 2017; no specific date has been released.  The show’s delay is rumored to have something to do with avoiding being pitted against that mega HBO hit that everyone is waiting for.

rsz_mary-and-bash

SO…..Let’s catch up first! Last season we watched Francis (Toby Regbo), King of France succumb to his illness and Mary (Adelaide Kane) returned to Scotland after his death.  In Scotland, Mary, with Bash (Torrance Coombs) by her side,  faces a country that is divided by religion.  And to add to her stress,  she is reminded that she does not know how to be Scottish because she grew up in France. After a Catholic raid on a Protestant village, Mary must find a way to unite her country.  So with her best Braveheart speech, she proves to her people that she isn’t their Catholic Queen, she is their Scottish Queen and she has returned to stand against England.  Afterward, Mary receives some tragic news that forces her to make a move against Elizabeth…with the help of her English lover.

Bash is told by the Druids that he has powers and must learn to use them.  He leaves Mary to learn from the Druids, saying he will return to her whenever she needs him.

rsz_5176b771304affe32e1a83d6b054-jpeg

In France, former kitchen boy turned French soldier Leith (Jonathan Keltz) was given the blessing to marry Princess Claude (Rose Williams). The night before the wedding he sets out with the men from Marte de Guise to stop the Red Knights once and for all.  Leith is betrayed, stabbed and left for dead as we watch Claude prepare her wedding dress.

rsz_y

Meanwhile Catherine (Megan Follows) is tightening her grip on France’s new king, Charles (Spencer MacPherson).  Charles has the privy council declare that he is of age to take the throne and power away from his mother.  Catherine send for her youngest son Henry to return to Court…as  a reminder to Charles that he is replaceable. Hint. Hint.

rsz_reign-the-cw

In England, Lord Dudley exposes Lola (Anna Popplewell) as an accomplice to an assassination attempt on Elizabeth’s life.  Lola confesses and is sentenced to death. Lola’s husband, Lord Narcisse (Craig Parker) is forced to watch his wife’s beheading and afterward, is locked up in an English prison.  Lola’s death sets up a major showdown between Mary and Elizabeth.

There is an update on casting.

will4

Will Kemp (Van Helsing) has been cast as Lord Darnley, who historically was Mary’s cousin Henry  Stuart and an English subject. Mary did wed her cousin to strengthen her claim on the English throne.  Henry let his ambition get the best of him, he even tried to have Mary name him a co-sovereign of the Scottish Crown so he could remain the King after Mary died.  Needless to say, all does not end well for Lord Darnley.  Lord Darnley is described as “an ambitious person who desperately wants to win Mary’s hand.”

rsz_adam-croasdell-net-worth_189488

Adam Croasdell (EastEnders, Once Upon A Time) has been cast as Bothwell, a man who falls in love with Mary, but harbors a dark secret…Ooooooooo.  Bothwell, historically known as James Hepburn, Earl of Bothwell was a real Scottish nobleman who was accused of murdering Lord Darnley.  After being acquitted, it was suggested by Parliament that Mary should marry a native-born Scot.  Bothwell then kidnapped and married Mary causing Scotland to become a divided nation.

That’s a lot of drama to put into one season.  There are rumors that this will be the final season of Reign, but nothing definite.  It will be interesting to see how they pack in all of this Scottish drama in with what’s still going on in France…and England.

Haven’t heard of Reign??  Well…be on the lookout for a summary of season 1-3…from me…coming soon!

Fargo Season 3 – Scoot McNairy Joins Cast

One of the finest new series to his the screens in recent years has been (in my opinion) FX’s black comedy/drama Fargo. It shouldn’t work; TV adaptations of awesome films rarely do. Fargo is a different beast though – it is compelling, funny, shocking, and has some of the best painted characters you will see over 10 episodes. This is partly down to the excellent, Cohen Brothers inspired writing (Kirsten Dunst feeding a tied up murder baked beans in season two was outstanding) and partly down to the casting of excellent Hollywood actors in the lead roles. As well as Dunst, familiar faces in season one and two have included: Martin Freeman, Billy Bob Thornton, Colin Hanks, Ted Danson, Jean Smart, Kieran Culkin, Patrick Wilson and Nick Offerman. Offerman’s scenes in season two are a work of art – it is worth watching the whole brilliant series for him alone.

Showrunner Noah Hawley has begun releasing information about season 3, which will go into production soon and is due to air in 2017. During his appearance at the Emmys (for which Fargo had nominations in a number of categories) he revealed that Scoot McNairy would be a regular in the upcoming season. He sadly didn’t disclose anything about the character McNairy, who currently stars as downtrodden but loyal engineer Gordon Clark in the excellent Halt and Catch Fire, would be playing.

img_1872

Confirmed cast Scoot McNairy, Ewan McGregor, Mary Elizabeth Winsted and Carrie Coon

This news comes hot on the heels of other casting information. Scottish Jedi and national treasure Ewan McGregor will play two roles – a pair of lookalike brothers called Emmit and Ray. Emmit (the ‘Parking Lot King of Minnesota’) is more attractive and successful than Ray, his bitter younger brother. Mary Elizabeth Winsted (hair dye and rollerblade fancier Ramona Flowers in Scott Pilgrim vs the World) will be playing an alluring recent parolee called Nikki Swango. Relative newcomer Carrie Coon (who stars in The Leftovers, and also played Margot in Gone Girl) will play the season’s female lead – taking up the no-nonsense lady cop role that Fargo has a tradition of presenting. Her character Gloria is the chief of police promises to be practical, down to earth, and (if the other seasons are anything to go by) will be dealing with some crazy situations.

Season 3 will reportedly take place in 2010, which is about 4 years after the events of season one (season 2 was set in the 70s), and it is not yet clear how the stories will (if all) link in with the Solversons, who were the big players in the first two seasons.

Fargo seasons 1&2 are available on Netflix (definitely UK – other countries may differ) Season 3 is due for release in 2017 (TBC)

Magic Manu?

As you might have heard Joe Manganiello (Magic Mike, True Blood) has been cast as Deathstroke in the solo Batman film directed by Ben Affleck.

Off course Manu Bennett (Arrow, Spartacus) televisions Deathstroke had to respond to this news.

I for one would not mind seeing Manu Bennett in a Magic Mike movie. For those who have seen Spartacus must admit that Manu Bennett has a killer body. And for those who haven’t seen it can judge for themselves below.

crixus_2

Combine his killer accent and that body and many will swoon by the sight and sound of him stripping. I have seen many in favour for Manu to get a role in a third Magic Mike movie, although it is doubtful that there will be a third Magic Mike movie.

Now most strippers have a certain costume they use to strip. And I have given some thought about what Manu’s costume would be. What if Manu Bennett, if he were to get on Magic Mike, stripped out of his Deathstroke costume. It would build up a lot of anticipation as it is a multilayered costume. But oh, how sweet it would be.
