Doctor Who SN1 EP1 – ‘The Name Of The Doctor’

Ah, the old black and white, cheesy effects, not-so-great acting of the very first episode of Doctor Who. The first season aired on November 23rd 1963. I am going to give a weekly update and review here of the past episodes. Some of you may have seen them all, and others may have only seen the newer ones from Eccleston on. And there may be some who have never seen it, if this is you, be kind to yourself and go watch it now… Right now.

Ok so on to the review. As mentioned above, the first episodes are in black and white. The props are well, questionable, but given the time and era in which it was made, I guess it’s the best they had. And the effects, oh, the way they had the TARDIS “flying” through space and transporting them to another planet was fantastically corny. The sound of the ship was kind of distorted and almost pitchy, made me wince a little bit. But over all fun just the same.

In the first episode, we meet the Doctor and his granddaughter, Susan Fore. (first female Timelord guys). Now the first impression of our Doctor from the 60s is well, he is old, like really old. And is a little gruff to say the least. He isn’t the fun and goofy doctors some of us have grown accustomed to. In fact he is very mature, wise, and a bit cold, but still carries the aloof and somewhat quirky nature we have grown to know.

In this episode, the granddaughter is followed to the TARDIS by her mentors/teachers, Barbara and Ian, where they encounter the first Doctor himself. They insist she is inside of the TARDIS and they want to see her. The old Doctor acts a bit like he doesn’t know what they are talking about or goes off side from time to time until finally allowing them in the big blue box.

And this is where we get to see for the first time what the Time Machine looked like on the inside… big dots, big dots everywhere, and the middle time console is a bit goofy to say the least, but again, this was the 1960s. And there, standing by the heart of the TARDIS is the granddaughter, Susan, that everyone is in search of. She turns and is shocked that her peers are standing there, and wonders why they have been let in. This leads to some arguing about what is going on, why they are here, and letting them all go. The Doctor seems pretty hellbent that no one is leaving the TARDIS, making arguments that the newcomers know too much, and whisks them all away on the first adventure the TARDIS and crew will see. The show ends after the absolutely wonderfully corny way that they show them traveling through time and space and landing on a planet. There is a shadowy figure that you see against the sand just before the film ends.

Though the effects were very questionable, watching them travel through time with some light over drafts and weird looks on the characters faces, this was just, well, yeah, corny. That the main word I can use I guess. But this was what they had to work with and knowing this, I would say they did pretty good then. I enjoyed the first show and feel they should be watched by all Whovians. Just if anything, to give you the idea and culture from which the most loved, cult following, longest running tv series came from. ^_^

Godzilla Is To Return From The Deep In A NEW Animated Movie

Tokyo smashing, fire breathing giant lizard we have grown to love has been on the big screen for years. Starting with badly dubbed voiceovers and men crammed in hard to maneuver costumes, 1970s TV cartoon animated series by Hannah Barberra, to 20th century special effects, making him look even more life-like than before.

hanna_barbera_toho_godzilla_1978-500x371 godzilla

(So, not either of these guys :p )

Our Kaiju with the attitude is now going to be making his way back to the animated world. And this time not as goofy or corny as the 1970s cartoon. (you know, the one with Godzookie) It appears that the animated artist will be no other than Tokyo’s Polygon Pictures, who are the ones behind such anime as Ghost in the Shell, (nice) and will be more CG animation than hand drawn.

I think this is super fantastic, I am huge Godzilla fan and can’t wait to watch this with my son, who is also a huge fan. We have watched and own every single movie/show out there of him so yeah, we kind of like the big guy. I just hope they keep with tradition and not go with silly ‘let’s make Godzilla our friend’ crap as they did in the old cartoons. I liked those and all too but, this is Godzilla, he needs to destroy and fight monsters…. It’s what he was made to do ^_^

Is A Superman ‘Man Of Steel’ Sequel In The Works?

And ladies all over the world squeal and rejoice! The sound so loud and deafening you can hear it from the highest mountain top….. Ok so maybe that’s an over exaggeration but you get the point.

fangirling_by_bellamira-d6shvdf

It may not be fully confirmed yet, but it does sound like the sequel for the red-caped hottie may be in the workings. Man of Steel first debuted in 2013, becoming a hit in the box office and fans have been waiting for some time now for there to be a part two. Though the movie Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice did not make it so big in the screen monies, the newly released Suicide Squad brought in such a big cash flow that it may have lit a fire under their butts to keep the Superman franchise going.

Fans are curious as to where they may go with the story as well.

(SPOILERS)

We know that in the Dawn of Justice movie, the world has come to grieve the death of the blue super dude, and we know he will be returning in the Justice League as announced at SDCC, alongside the Flash, Aquaman, Batman, and Wonderwoman. But what will the story be for when the solo sequel is brought to life? Will the Superman in the Justice League movie be a clone or robot like in the comics, thus being discovered in the end of Justice League? This could bring a new story for the sequel for sure, plus maybe give an opening for Supergirl to make her debut in the DC movie world….

Well, this my friends is exciting to think about. If you know your comics then I’m sure you to have your own thoughts and speculations as to what the sequel may hold. I would love to hear your ideas as well. But until then, I know I will be anxiously awaiting to hear more, and hopefully confirm the filming of the solo sequel. ^_^

John Schaech Of ‘Legends Of Tomorrow’ Wants To Play Wolverine

Let’s just get this out there, I don’t think anyone could accept anyone else playing the role accept for Hugh Jackman. He has owned this role for so long, and I have mad respect for this actor who actually stuck with it. No matter how small or big his part, he has always been a part of the X-Men universe and always been the Wolverine.

But there was an announcement by the actor John Schaech, while being interviewed at the Heroes and Villains convention, that he would like to play the part of the X-Man with the anger problems: “If I could play any character, it’d be Wolverine.” Apparently Jackman’s Wolverine inspired Mr. Schaech to start acting. Interesting wouldn’t you think?

John Schaech will be returning this next season of Legends of Tomorrow, his role being again that of the mangled-faced gunslinger Jonah Hex. Which, if you ask me, is perfect for him. Jonah kind of has his own attitude problems and will be good practice for future roles should there ever be a need to redo the Wolverine genre. ^_^

Chris Hemsworth’s Body Scared John Krasinski Off Cap Role

krasinski-conan

Imagine an alternate universe, where the Marvel Cinematic Universe got cast in a completely different way. Rumour has it that Tom Cruise was in the running for Iron Man, Joaquin Phoenix could have been the Hulk, and Emily Blunt could have been Black Widow. But Blunt did not choose wisely, and honoured her commitment to a turkey of enormous proportions, Jack Black vehicle Gulliver’s Travels. Well played, Em! Her husband John Krasinski (The Office) was almost part of the franchise too, as he made the shortlist to play Captain America. (Fun Fact: If you go on IMDB trivia, you will see that John Krasinski was short listed for loads of major movie roles…. There’s sooo many!)

Krasinski got the enviable experience of auditioning for the role of Cap, and even got to wear the famous suit. However, Krasinski told Conan O’Brien on a recent episode of his talk show that he pulled out of the shortlist after meeting Thor star Chris Hemsworth. Krasinski said “I was putting on the suit, and I got right to my waist, I was still shirtless. I was feeling pretty good about myself. I wasn’t 13 Hours yet, but felt pretty good. And then all of a sudden, Chris Hemsworth walks by as Thor, and goes, ‘Hey, mate.’ And I was like, ‘I’m good. This is stupid. I’m not Captain America.'”

He’s not given up hope though. Krasinski is a huge Marvel fan and would love to be part of the Universe – possibly as a villain. Considering everyone on the planet appears to be getting featured in Avengers: Infinity War, surely there’s got to be something he can do!

The episode of Conan aired on 24th August. Watch the clip here:

The Oft-Kilter Romantic Comedy Manga Nisekoi Has Ended And Why It’s Worth The Read/Watch

https://encrypted-tbn2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTUbES1eXrQTapXKViVpW2d5dDnu0VEK2Adr8166JRRUTiRKZev9A

The manga Nisekoi or False Love by Naoshi Komi is something that I have really enjoyed despite it not really being something I may have read when I first started watching Anime and reading Manga. As I have aged I have discovered so many different genres within these areas and have found enjoyment reading ones that caught my eye.

This romantic comedy about teenage love is something that was really fun to read. The characters all had their own thoughts and feelings that were clearly understood. Raku was a seemingly normal guy who just so happened to attract sweet ladies and that is part of what makes this so funny.

This story has many different facets of interesting ideas that play throughout the story. First of all Raku and Chitoge are of different sides of the same criminal coin. Raku is the son of a Japanese mobster and Chitoge is the daughter of more standard mobster. When these two are forced to date each other to make a treaty between families of course comedy ensues.

Raku and Chitoge have this big secret that they keep from everyone for a long while until eventually it is spilled. Of course this leads to drama as now Raku is really a free agent. Though that doesn’t mean everyone knows, it really is only the core group.

Amidst all this Raku is in love with his childhood friend Onodera. Eventually other women from his past like the sickly and jubilant Marika, Yui the head of the Char Siu mafia and Chitoge’s body guard Tsugumi come into the picture. Raku has no idea at first that they were all friends in the past during one magical summer.

This story intertwines these different characters because they were all once really good friends even if it was just for a short time. The idea of love is tied to a locked pendant Raku wears on his neck. Each of the women besides Tsugumi carries a key which may or may not unlock this pendant.

I really enjoyed this story because there were so many ways it could have ended. Though I would have been happier if another character had ended up with Raku I am also happy that he ended up with who he ended up with. Now I won’t go and spoil the ending for you, so you may be inclined to read all 229 chapters of this splendid manga.

If you enjoy, romantic comedy, sweets, mobsters, and an often times dramatic love story then you should check out this manga. Naoshi Komi is a wild and creative man who really has made something beautiful and really just give it a shot. I am excited to see what this man has in store for us with whatever manga he whips up next.

The Walking Dead Season 7 ‘Negan’ Trailer And Promo Pictures

twds7header

A new trailer for ‘The Walking Dead’ focused completely on Negan (a.k.a the sadistic psychopath set to make all our lives a misery this October) has been released by AMC.

The trailer offers a few snippets of new footage, giving us short glimpses at how the Saviours are going to operate, as well as their base ‘The Sanctuary’. The trailer reinforces the idea that Negan is revered by his followers, with shots of Saviours kneeling down as he walked by. There were also a few shots of the Kingdom crew in there, currently incorporating Carol and Morgan, suggesting it might not be long before the two factions go up against each other.

Whilst it didn’t show us much, the trailer certainly helped further sell Negan as a significant threat going into this new season. The particularly ominous line “I am everywhere” should be enough to give anyone chills, and we can be sure our heroes aren’t gonna get any rest from this guy any time soon.

As well as this new trailer, AMC also released a slew of new promo pictures for the show. Again they don’t tell us much, but they tell us enough. There will be plenty of new locations in this upcoming season, as we get to know more about the inhabitants of The Kingdom, The Sanctuary and even The Hilltop. They even gave us a gruesome look at how The Saviours enjoy decorating their base.

So it’s clear the wait is almost over, but given we’re about to lose a beloved character i’m not sure I want it to be.

‘The Walking Dead’ Season 7 premieres Sunday, October 23rd 10pm on AMC, then one day after in the UK on Monday, October 24th 9pm on Fox.

You’re The Worst SN3 EP2 – ‘Fix Me, Dummy’

You're_the_Worst_title_card

The second episode the third season of You’re the Worst begins with our friends Jimmy and Gretchen sitting on the couch. Jimmy has just sent out his book proposal to the publisher and gets a celebratory handy from his lady.

Jimmy goes into see the therapist with Gretchen, Gretchen is not up to therapy. But she is tasked to do one thing and Jimmy suggests she finally open the mail she has been putting off opening.

Lindsay stabbed Paul at the end of the last episode. Now, she is working to heal him and she clearly is not happy that he is such a whiner. She dumps the pills in her purse and heads out to see her friends.

Gretchen says she is quitting therapy because she was given homework. Clearly something else is bothering her, she just needs to face whatever it is head on.

Edgar gives Jimmy’s notes on his book proposal. But Jimmy won’t hear them as he just wanted Edgar’s praise.

Gretchen heads back to tell her therapist she is quitting therapy. The therapist reads through her bullshit and knows that she will regret her decision. In a beautiful moment she makes Gretchen think show weakness which she isn’t likely to do. Gretchen is such a visceral character and she clearly knows she needs help which is why this is such a poignant scene.

Jimmy begins fixing his piece with a bit of help from Edgar though he doesn’t want to admit it. He is upset that Edgar let Dorothy read his work which he says has already been sent in.

Gretchen and Lindsay sit outside the therapist’s office and eat Paul’s pills. Gretchen wants to egg her house but eventually falls asleep. When the therapist comes out Gretchen reveals she hates feeling vulnerable. With some talk about the therapist’s own problems with her boyfriend’s locking things down she makes Gretchen reevaluate stopping therapy.

Jimmy sits outside the moving truck with a group of people and talks about his book. His book is a little too above them but he does learn a little. Jimmy is the kind of guy who thrives on the big ideas. He wants to write the next classic and is often not totally honest with himself. But clearly he just wants to feel appreciated.

This was another great episode of You’re the Worst. Gretchen is clearly going to work on herself this season, and that is wonderful. I really do enjoy seeing characters especially one so set in her ways initially growing as a person.

Edgar helps the homeless veterans make signs to change their lives. He really is such an interesting character as he just wants to help people. He knows the struggle of coming home from war and wants to aid his fellow man. But he leaves his girlfriend Dorothy to move her stuff into her new place. When she comes to see him and he shows he cares she returns the favor and says they can use the boxes to make fresh signs.

Gretchen and Jimmy are both feeling down about their respective days. Gretchen opens up the mail like she promised and finds a letter from Jimmy’s sister. His father has died. He comes bounding in because his book idea has sold. This weight of knowing something so personal will certainly affect Gretchen. The way her eyes fill with emotion is so beautiful as she does really care about Jimmy and really doesn’t want to spoil his big moment.

Again just a stellar episode of this amazing show. This really is a show that makes use of its characters and makes them so real it almost hurts. I feel for these characters and that is the beauty of this show, characters so real you feel for them on an emotional level. I cannot wait for next week’s episode Bad News: Dude’s Dead.
