T’s Summer Binge-watch Guide: Charmed

This is one of my all time favorite shows.  In fact, it’s one of only two shows that I have all the seasons on dvd…. the other is Supernatural.  Do you see a pattern here?  Yeah, me too.  This show is the reason that I refused to watch Supernatural when it first started.  In fact, I actually called Supernatural a …. Charmed rip off without the magical powers.  Don’t throw stones at me until you hear me out.  Charmed was on the air first… it was about sister witches fighting evil.  Charmed had an episode in it’s first season called The Wendigo … and Supernatural’s second episode is about … yep, you guessed it … a wendigo (although they were different types of creatures and neither Sam nor Dean got turned into one).  So, as a huge fan of “The Witches” you can see where I was a little skeptical, right?  I came to see the light in the end, and that’s really all that matters.

Anyway, this is one of the best shows to ever grace a television screen, and if you’ve been watching all my previous suggestions, then you know that I know good TV.  And, if you haven’t been watching all my previous suggestions…. why the hell not?

The show had an awesome theme song and several different openings over it’s 8 seasons, but a really awesome fan of the show combined all the season openings into one long video with the whole song (not just the parts used in the show).

You’ll be thanking me for including that in this article if you watch the show on Netflix, because for licensing reasons they didn’t use it in the Netflix version.  It is on the dvd’s though, well except for Season 8 (because again they were trying to save money on licensing when they released that season).

Premise of the show:  Three sisters discover that they’re witches… a set of prophecied (yes, that’s really a word… I looked it up) siblings destined to save innocents…. The Charmed Ones.  For 8 seasons, they do just that while trying to maintain some sort of normal life.

Primary cast:

Holly Marie Combs … Piper Halliwell

Alyssa Milano … Phoebe Halliwell

Rose McGowen … Paige Matthews

Brian Krause … Leo Wyatt

Dorian Gregory … Darryl Morris

Shannen Doherty … Prue Halliwell

Pros:  The show is a mix of great drama and comedy.  There’s a lot of special effects and great action.  It features strong women who save the world every episode… self saving princesses, if you will.  And, if that doesn’t hook ya …. there’s scantily clad hot women… and great looking guys.

Cons:  After three seasons, a behind the scenes battle between the cast members caused a major character to leave the show.  But, the replacement character fit in and was explained well so the show continues without any problems.  Don’t want to give away too many spoilers, so sorry about being vague there.

There have been rumors about a reboot of the show, which I’m totally against.  However, if they wanted to do a Charmed: The Next Generation type thing, I could get behind that… ya know, a show about the grown up (or teenage versions) of the Halliwell children.  I’d love to see adult Wyatt and Chris kicking demon @$$.  Wonder what Wes Ramsey and Drew Fuller are up to now days.

There were 8 seasons and 179 episodes (including an un-aired pilot that had a different actress playing Phoebe), and you can watch them all (except for the un-aired pilot) on Netflix.  This show is not available on Hulu.  If you look, you can find the un-aired pilot on youtube (in parts).  But, here’s a little side by side (sort of) comparisons of Lori Rom (the original Phoebe) and Alyssa … and you can see that Alyssa was far better in the role.

If you can, you should watch the dvd’s of the show; there’s a dvd bonus on the last dvd of Season 8 called “To the Manor Born” that shows a lot of behind the scenes stuff about the house set… including little inside jokes that you might miss when watching the show.

Some trivia about the show… The Halliwell Manor’s address was 1329 Prescott Street in San Francisco.  The actual house is located at 1329 Carroll Avenue in Los Angeles.  The Book of Shadows weighs 9 pounds 6 ounces, is the most valuable prop on the show, and is almost entirely hand painted.  Alyssa Milano liked the drawings in the Book of Shadows so much that she hired the artist to paint murals in her house.  Holly Marie Combs is the only one to appear in all 179 episodes, including the un-aired pilot.

I’ll leave you with some bloopers from the show….

Punisher TV Series To Include Micro?

rsz_1489805-microchip.png

The rumor has started around the Punisher TV series despite it not being given an official air date and the rumor that has surfaced that the new series will include Micro.

It has been rumored that Marvel and Netflix are currently casting for the role of David Lieberman AKA Microchip/Micro. We are still not sure what stage of pre-production the Punisher is in, but if they are casting for roles then it must be further along than we thought.

The script being used for the Punisher includes Micro but we are unsure how big Micros involvement will be in the series. It would make sense to include Micro in the new series as the characters have integrated with each other multiple times in the comic books and Micro also made an appearance in Punisher:Warzone.

At present this is only a rumor that Micro will be used in the series but it is more likely than not that he will make some sort of appearance in my opinion. What we do know is that actor Jon Bernthal will be taking on the role he made his own in Daredevil season 2 as the Punisher.

Avengers Assemble! Tony Stark Or Captain America To Appear In Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.?

is-tony-stark-using-them-to-someday-take-over-s-h-i-e-l-d-that-ll-surely-lead-to-captain-america-civil-war-coulson-i-m-still-your-biggest-fan-314002Television news site TVLine is reporting that either Tony Stark or Captain America may appear in the first episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season Four. According to the popular news site, the cameo was filmed earlier this month in ‘Star Wars-veil level of secrecy’.

This wouldn’t be the first time a high-profile character from the Marvel Cinematic Universe has appeared in the TV Series. Samuel L Jackson and Cobie Smulders both appeared in the show’s first season as Nick Fury and Maria Hill respectively.

As for who is most likely to appear, my money’s on Tony Stark. Robert Downey Jnr filmed a scene earlier this month and many assumed it was for this November’s Doctor Strange. So what if it was actually for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.?

I’d like to see Iron Man fight J. August Richard’s Deathlok, for instance.

When asked during a Reddit AMA whether he would appear in the show, Robert Downey Jnr  replied ‘Nothing is impossible’ so he clearly isn’t against a cameo appearance.

On the other hand, a Captain America appearance would make sense given that Coulson is possibly the Cap’s biggest fan. A scene where Coulson reveals to Steve Rodgers that he is still alive could be a magical moment for the show akin to the eleventh Doctor’s conversation with Tom Baker’s Curator in the Doctor Who 50th anniversary special The Day of the Doctor.

Chris Evans hasn’t spoken out on whether he would be willing to appear, although during the rap battle between Agent Carter and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. he was on Agent Carter’s side so it’s clear where his loyalties lie!

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns to the U.S. on  Tuesday 20th September on ABC. E4 have yet to confirm a UK return date.

The DC Extended Universe Has Crossed the $2 Billion Mark at Worldwide Box Office.

NEFnlOmpvXAQJJ_2_b

Over the past weekend as Suicide Squad continued to rake in millions of dollars, the DC Extended Universe reached a new milestone, crossing the $2 billion mark after just 3 films. In comparison, it took the Marvel Cinematic Universe 5 films to cross the $2 billion mark. That does make a statement. Even  though the DCEU films are lambasted by critics, there’s no doubt that they are a financial success. Critics may continue trashing the DCEU but fans will keep on seeing movies, despite the media trying to convince them not to.

Next year’s Wonder Woman will mark the first female led superhero epic, and that, even though it might get bad reviews, will still rake a lot of cash and break some box office records. The most iconic superhero team of all time, Justice League, will take the center stage for the first time ever in a silver screen. And that is sure to break every record set in November. The point here, is that even though critics might keep on hating the DCEU films, they won’t stop making money. They are based off very popular properties, and recently DC Comics overtook Marvel in comics sales for the month of July. At the end of the day, besides the critics, we all want the same thing; these superhero epics to be successful. And that train isn’t gonna stop anytime soon.

Things may also change for the better as Warner Bros recently changed the heads of the DC films, promoting Geoff Johns and Jon Berg to pilot the DCEU ship. The trailers that were released in San Diego Comic Con 2016 did show that the DC films universe is taking a new approach. There was humor, sarcasm, and lightheartedness in both the Justice League and Wonder Woman trailers. Still, Suicide Squad had a humongous amount of humor and critics still chose to hate. As the saying goes, “haters gonna hate”.

We’ll all be waiting to see the reactions to Wonder Woman and Justice League when they arrive in theaters on June 2 and November 17 2017, respectively.

New Fast8 Trailer Coming in December

f8.png

The Fast & Furious Facebook page posted a photo and statement this last Friday which tells fans that they can expect a first look at the new movie Fast 8 in December.  The post thanks the fans and crew who have made this entire journey possible.  It also thanks the late Paul Walker who “still inspires [them] all.”  After his shocking death, it wasn’t clear if the franchise would continue, but as Fast8 wraps up and the fans are able to count down the days till the first look is available, excitement grows.

Keep an eye out for the first trailer in December!

Take a look at the post on Facebook.

Ballers SN2 EP5 – ‘Most Guys’

Right off the bat this episode hits us hard as we join Spencer Strasmore (Dwayne Johnson) in the doctor’s office receiving bad news. “You have Osteo-Arthritis”, is what he hears from the doctor, but more importantly she will not refill his pain medication prescription! Yikes! Now what does he do? He pops those pills like altoids, you know he can’t stop cold turkey!

As he heads in to work he is pressured by the restriction of not being registered yet to give financial advice to the players. On edge, he begins drinking in the morning and snaps at Joe to get them registered.

As Charles Greane (Omar Benson Miller) develops his protective instinct, he begins a battle with a disrespectful young neighbor.

Reggie (London Brown) tries to brighten Vernon’s mood by getting him a pet. This is just the beginning of an adventure for the Joe and Reggie team! You have to see them! Ha ha!

Ricky Jerret (John David Washington)  is debating between New York and New Orleans. What to do? What to do?

Continuing the withdrawing journey with Mr. Strasmore or Mr. Chavez I should say, we find ourselves in a seedy side of town in a small clinic. What for? Wasn’t he just in with his physician this morning?

As the buddies: Charles and Ricky get out for the night to help each other make some major decision, they actually come up with some solid choices.

Reggie and Joe continue to bond as their adventure to help Vernon ends in disappointment.

As the episode gets going Spencer finds out one of his buddies work for the NFL PA who handles the registration and he meets his newest client, Travis Mack. Things might just be looking up! Find out by watching the episode!

Don’t Walk Among The Dead- An Indie Production By Satinder Kassoana

rsz_kick

Those of you who have read and enjoyed my interview with Julian Black Antelope, hold onto your hats! Julian has teamed up with another man of many talents, Satinder Kassoana and an ethnically diverse cast and crew to produce a 10 minute Indie Drama short entitled Don’t Walk Among the Dead –   a vision of an icy post-apocalyptic world where the Dead walk, and the Living do whatever they have to do to survive. This story was created and filmed with the help of Telus Storyhive, a funding program for new Independent Content Creators in British Columbia and Alberta, the two westernmost provinces in Canada. Oh and by the way? It was among the winners! Out of 300 entries!

This short was filmed over the coldest two days of the year, near Dorothy, one of Alberta’s pioneer communities located about 15 km southeast of Drumheller, the heart of the Alberta Badlands. In January of 2016. In -30 C weather. Yep, you read that right. Talk about grit and determination!

The lead character – survivor Molly (Angela Giffin), is confused, frustrated and exhausted almost beyond endurance, but she is a realist too. She struggles to get her sick older sister Jasmine (Brenna Sommer) over the seemingly never ending snow covered plain to a rumored safe haven in the mountains. Jasmine is getting weaker with each step as the cold saps what little strength she has left. They seek refuge in an abandoned wood cabin, but at least it has four walls and a roof, and an old Dutch oven to build a fire in. Molly builds a little fire, and leaves her sister to rest while she goes to find some firewood, and maybe some food. While she is out gathering firewood, a foot carelessly placed alerts her to the presence of another person. As she grabs her rifle and turns, she sees a man, layered in fur, a tattered greatcoat and bloodstained denims with a homemade long shafted battle axe, also bloodstained, sneaking up on her. I don’t want to spoil it for you, so I will stop the synopsis here, so that you can see for yourself what happens next. I’ll grab a tea while you watch.

Are you back? Did you notice the ethereal background music at the beginning? It gave me shivers. Rachel Soong, of Chinese descent, wrote and performed this piece and the rest of the score throughout the short. The somewhat deranged Metis man, Joseph, is Julian Black Antelope, who is also credited as executive producer, stunt coordinator, and  the moving force behind putting the crew together. Satinder Kassoana, the creator, director, writer and executive producer is originally from the Punjab, where his parents gave him the option to either be a Doctor or an Engineer. He chose Engineering. He landed a high paying job with the second largest software company in India, and eventually made his way to Switzerland, where he worked with Credit Suisse. He found his way to Canada on a full scholarship to study for his Masters in Computer Engineering. Having more of an artistic, creative bent and being a natural story teller he gravitated towards the film and arts industry in his free time, and realizing that this was his niche, dropped out of his grad program. He turned his back on the scholarship, and threw himself wholeheartedly into his passion. A couple of years later, he moved to Montreal, where he wrote, directed and acted in his first short. Bonjour Ji is a powerful story about the communications gap between the ethnicities that work and interact every day, and how that gap can be closed by just a small shift in perspective. This short won Best Short-Film at five international film festivals including the IFFSA Toronto 2015, the DCSAFF 2015 in Washington, and the Richmond International Film Festival 2016 USA. Bonjour Ji has been screened in many other film festivals across the globe.

Satinder first saw the cabin that he eventually used in Don’t Walk Among the Dead, when he was out exploring Alberta for locations to build a story around. And it was while he was sitting in this cabin, located near the Atlas mine just outside of Drumheller, that he came up with the idea for his post-apocalyptic story, a genre that he loves, but has never written or filmed. When he and Julian hooked up, they discussed what Satinder had in mind for a story, and in very general terms, what sort of location would be needed. Julian spent a few days scouting locations, and took pictures of each, but the location he was the most excited about was the exact cabin where Satinder conceived the story in the first place. This cabin, located on the Historic Graham Ranch was actually a film prop that had been used in a number of productions. How serendipitous was that?

Through making this short, Satinder has built his core group… people that he would like to continue working with, through this and other films. This group is ethnically quite diverse. I have already told you a little about Rachel Soong and Julian Black Antelope, but the ethnic richness continues with Stéphane Legault, from Quebec, who not only played the infected man you saw near the beginning of the short at the cost of near hypothermia, he also was the Transportation Captain and the Caterer. Kaz Nakajima, the Key Grip, is of Japanese descent. Amir Javaid, Story Editor, is a young man whose heritage is Pakistani. His brother Omar Javaid was the behind the scenes Videographer. Hernan Moreno, Associate Producer and First Assistant Director, is from Latin America. The Costume Designer, Ralamy Kneeshaw, put together some amazingly realistic costumes within the budget that Satinder had, and he would love to continue working with her as well. Cinematography was by Phil Bowen; Shannon Joel Chapell was in charge of Production Design; Jade Brunes of Calamity Jade and her assistant Reid Fisher did the makeup – no prosthetics! Neil Enock (drone pilot and operator), Terry A. Brown (grip), Alexis Moar (first assistant camera), Yaz Arima (gaffer), Sophia Legault (craft service), Jordan Scott (story editor) and Allan Thrush (color grading) . All of the crew and the brilliant young actors Brenna and Angela, Julian and Satinder,  have one extremely important thing in common, no matter their background or disciplines or languages spoken. They are, each and every one of them, passionate about films and film making, to the point where they will go out in -30 C weather to bring a vision to life.

And special mention goes to John Barry Graham, owner of the Historic Graham Ranch and the movie prop cabin that inspired the story, and his boys Byron and Robin Graham.

The story doesn’t end here.   The complete script was not shot during those two days due to the extreme weather conditions and  limited budget, which were factors in reducing the shooting time. But in spite of the challenges they faced, I am sure you will agree that they did an amazing job as a team in completing the bare essentials of the script. The current version is missing two key scenes which are absolutely essential to the film. These scenes will expand the film from its current 10-minute run time to 15 minutes of run time. So really, there is 33% of the film that has yet to see the light of day. The cast and crew were so passionate about telling the story in its entirety that they have gone back to shoot the missing scenes, spending their own money to do it.

Cast and Crew in the Cabin that Inspired the Story

Don’t Walk Among the Dead demands that Satinder complete his  human-centric vision of the apocalypse. The team’s only remuneration and reward will be the satisfaction of having it seen by the film industry. Satinder has developed a Kickstarter campaign to fund the post  production work so he can send it to as many film festivals and get as much exposure for his team as possible. If you enjoyed what you saw and would like to see Don’t Walk Among the Dead as it was intended to be, please click here. The personal satisfaction of helping this determined group of people showcase  the relationship between Molly and Joseph in the icy wastelands as they come to depend on and learn from each other in their struggle to survive will NOT be your only reward.  There is SWAG!!  Your name in the credits! How awesome would that be? Digital Posters! Limited Edition mugs and tees! The Digital Soundtrack, and so much more.

Thank you in advance for helping to bring Don’t Walk Among the Dead to life!
