Billboard announced Wednesday (Oct. 26) that Shania Twain and Halsey will be honoured for their inimitable contributions to the music industry as part of the Billboard’s 11th annual Women in Music event, which will be held Dec. 9 in New York City and airing nationally on Lifetime on Dec. 12. Halsey is also set to perform at the 2016 Women in Music event, and this year Madonna will be honored as the 2016’s Woman of the Year  and the country legend Shania Twain will receive the 2016 Women in Music ‘Icon’ award, which celebrates an artist whose historic contributions to the music industry establish them among the highest class of performers.

Janice Min, president and chief creative officer of The Hollywood reporter-Billboard Media Group said: “Shania Twain is a groundbreaking artist whose successful country-pop crossover blazed the trail for a new generation of country stars like Taylor Swift, Billboard’s 2014 Woman of the Year, and Carrie Underwood.” Min also said “She’s fearless in her career, following her own path and pushing the boundaries of the country music genre as she creates music that has proven to be timeless. She is revered in the industry and we are honoured to present the Icon award to her.”

Twain over the course of nearly three-decade career has earned four No. 1 albums on Top Country Albums, with 2002’s UP! Which also topped the Billboard 200. Her album Come On Over, a smash hit is the No.1 country album of all time and the second best-selling album overall since Nielsen Music began tracking sales in 1991. The album has moved a staggering 15.7 million units in the U.S. Come On Over also holds the record for the most weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Country Album chart at 50 weeks.

Halsey, the chart-topping singer-songwriter is this year’s Women in Music ‘Rising Star‘, in recognition for her chart dominance and exceptional, unconventional talent. Janice Min said “Halsey id the voice of a generation, someone who os an impassioned political advocate and personal artist, the kind who can have a No.1 single , as she did with ‘closer’, and not at all be categorized as your typical pop star,” Min went on to say “her credibility and talent make her a must-have collaborator for the like of Justin Bieber and The Chainsmokers. Her incredible talent has earned her this year’s’ Rising Star award and we look forward to hearing what’s next from her as she continues making music during what we know will be a long and successful career.”

The convention-flouting and outspoken artist has sold out to headlining tours, including a headlining show at Madison Square Garden which sold out in minutes. Halsey is currently atop the Billboard Hot 100 for a 10 week with “Closer” her collab with The Chainsmokers.

The Women of the Year recipient this year is Madonna, her Rebel Heart Tour, which wrapped in March, solidified her status as one of the biggest touring acts of all time. Madonna sold more than 1 million tickets and walked away with $170 million, that makes her the highest grossing solo touring artist in Billboard Boxscore history (archives back to 1990) with a staggering $1.31 billion in total concert grosses.

prince

Billboard exclusively reported last week, that a Prince greatest-hits collection and a Purple Rain deluxe edition were on the way.

Prince 4Ever will be a greatest-hits album with 40-tracks and is due for release on November 22 in the U.S and November 25 in other territories. The album will feature Prince’s best-known songs including, “1999“, “Diamonds And Pearls“, “When Doves Cry“, “Nothing Compares 2 U“, “U Got the Look” and many more  awesome tracks from the late singer. The album will also feature the unreleased “Moonbeam Levels.” Most of the tracks on 4Ever have been released as a single over his career, apart from a few album cuts “Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad?” and the B-side “Gotta Stop (Messin’ About).” Prince 4Ever will contain a 12-page booklet with previously unpublished photos by Herb Ritts.

The excitement doesn’t stop there, A remastered Purple Rain deluxe edition is set for release early next year , however the details are still sketchy, the set will include “a second album of previously unreleased material,” according to the press release, which also notes that plans for the set “were agreed with Prince before he passed away”.  The second album might include, multiple unreleased contemporaneous tracks such as “Electric Intercourse“, “G-Spot“, “Father’s Song“, “Wednesday“, “All Day, All Night” and “Possessed” which have appeared on bootlegs or were recorded with different Prince-related acts.

Both albums will be released by Prince’s NPG Records with Warner Bros., the label to which he was signed to for the first half of his professional career. All the tracks on Prince 4Ever date from his Warner Bros. era, which spanned from 1977 until 1996

For the first time this year, the Hall of Fame will honor specific members of each band as opposed to the full lineup  which has caused a bit of outrage, of the five drummers who’ve played with Pearl Jam, only current drummer Matt Cameron and founding member Dave Krusen are eligible for induction.

The top five, determined by a group of artists, historians, and music industry members, will be announced in December. They will then be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame during a ceremony held in April 2017 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
