Fans have been waiting for news of everyone’s favourite Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker, since the announcement that Mark Hamill would return to his most famous role. Yet information of where the offspring of Darth Vader will be when The Force Awakens hits our screens a month from now has been shrouded in darkness.
But rest assured Skywalker fans, Director JJ. Abrams has confirmed that the Jedi has far from been forgotten … by fans at the very least.
In an exclusive interview with EW, Abrams explained that the galaxy has moved on since the defeat of The Empire above Endor in The Return of the Jedi. ‘It was the thing that struck me the hardest, which was the idea that doing a story that took place nearly 40 years after Jedi meant that there would be a generation for whom Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Leia would be as good as a myth.’ Abrams continued ‘they’d be as old and as mythic as the tale of King Arthur. They would be characters who they may have herd of, but maybe not. They’d be characters who they might believe existed, or just sounded like a fairytale.’
Abrams, who also co-wrote the script, talked about new-comer Rey (played by Daisy Ridley) explaining that the young scavenger, from the desert planet of Jakku, would not have the ‘formal education or support system” to have knowledge of the heroes from the original saga, Jedi’s or even the Force. So the idea that someone like that would begin to learn that the Jedi were real, and that the Force exists, and that there’s a power in the universe that sounds fanciful but is actually possible, was an incredibly intriguing notion.’
Abrams also revealed the idea that various characters hold different pieces of history that makes it hard for any one truth to present itself. Using John Boyega’s character Finn as an example, Abrams elaborated that his background as a Stormtrooper would mean that his worldview of characters such as Han. Wouldn’t ‘feel as magical or mythical’ because they are seen as enemies of The Empire in which Finn serves.
Speaking of bad guys. The Force Awakens Domnhall Gleeson also spoke of his nefarious General Hux , describing him as a ‘kind of opposite Kylo Ren.’ Ren (played by Adam Driver) who has been the new Saga’s poster boy for much of the marketing for the upcoming blockbuster. Appears to be on a pilgrimage to finish what Darth Vader started in the original films. Much like his character, Rens motives are as shadower as the dark side that the (presumed) Sith Lord commands. But from what Gleeson reveals, Kylo may have to get past Hux himself before the Sith can gain true power: ‘They have their own relationship, which is individual and unusual. One of them is strong in different ways than the other. They’re both vying for power.’
Gleeson certainly presents Hux as the top dog of The New Order in The Force Awakens. ‘There’s an air of superiority, and being better than those people around you.’ The British actor also described his villain as “pretty ruthless” explaining that Hux’s weapon is to use other people to get what he wants.
Like General Moff Tarkin before him, Hux ultimately craves complete order. ‘It’s a desire to lump everything in its place and just have power. The desire for power is hugely motivating for a lot of people and normally the people that want all the power are not the ones that should have it.’
Abrams also gave details on the Starkiller Base, out of which the evil New Order operate: ‘It is very much — and it’s acknowledged as such in the movie — apparently another Death Star,’ said the director. ‘But what it’s capable of, how it works, and what the threat is, is far greater than what the Death Star could have done. Starkiller Base is another step forward, technologically speaking, in terms of power.’
With the most information released so far. The hype train is steadily building pace as The Force Awakens quickly approaches.
