Maggie Sawyer To Appear In ‘Supergirl,’ Season Two??

floriana_lima_maggie_sawyer_split

Yes, dear readers, it is rumored that Maggie Sawyer will be in the second season of Supergirl!!! And to those of you who do not know of this awesome lady, she is the first openly gay character to appear in the comics, way back in 1987.

WHO IS SHE??

Maggie_Sawyer

Maggie Sawyer was created by John Byrne in 1987, and is normally found in DC comics alongside either Superman or Batman. She works in both the Metropolis Special Crimes Unit dealing with Metahumans, and in the Gotham City Police Department. (Busy woman I guess) And her partner is …. Batwoman!! (WHOA!!) Way to go Maggie!

tumblr_n9krmrGJ7M1ti73tao4_1280

OK, when Maggie appears in the Superman comics, she is a thorn in his side. She doesn’t trust Superman and feels that the police are better equipped than he is to deal with trouble. (Yeah ok, he is super-human, made of steel, and the police department is not…. Um….. my bet is on the metahuman…) She even tries to apprehend him at one point, I guess, which to me seems extremely funny. I mean, hi, this is Superman, Man of Steel! Does the phrase “more powerful than a locomotive” not say anything to how almost impossible it would be for a mere “human” to apprehend him??? But for some reason she tries and of course, fails. But, she warms up to him when he saves her life from terrorist plot.

Who Will Play Miss Maggie?

floriana_lima_maggie_sawyer_split

According to ‘The Hollywood Reporter‘, they have cast Floriana Lima (even though she’s obviously not a blonde) from The Family to play our lesbian leading lady. Besides The Family, she also had parts in episodes of the Terminator, How I Met Your Mother, My Own Worst Enemy, Ghost Whisperers, Melrose Place, House, Franklin and Bash, and many more TV shows. Seems like she has lots of experience in this field, so I hope she will be good for the show. She is very pretty too so this will be hot!! 😉

Bring on the Crossovers!!

Now, knowing that the producer of Supergirl is Greg Berlanti, there is a pretty good chance, I’m sure, that she will be in other shows as well. He is the producer of shows like The Flash, Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow.  Let alone she works with Metahumans and is originally from Star City; both the term and place are found in The Flash series too, so I’m thinking there may be plenty of crossovers here. (Let’s not forget, The Flash and Supergirl did work together in an episode of Supergirl, titled “World’s Finest.”) Greg Berlanti feels its important to have changed the ethnicity and sexuality in the DC characters to reflect present day. And I’m sure I’m not alone in thinking that this is pretty awesome.

Being a pretty big fan of the super peeps, (yes, even the Supergirl movie) I am very excited to see what season two has for us. I hear there is supposed to be a showing of Superman himself finally *SHRIEKS* and now to have Maggie Sawyer…! This season will be awesome. (Plus, I heard there may be a cameo of Lynda Carter !!!) So yes, season two cant get here any faster for my taste  ^_^

2016_SDCC_LE_Sticker_large

Let’s face it, everyone loves Funko Pops, they are this generations version of the Beanie Babies. They are cute, collectible and there seems to be no end to them. I started collecting them forSkatronixxx Jr but stopped after realising that I’d never be able to collect them all. Would I still continue collecting them? Sure if I had the money, but alas I have temporarily put my Funko Pop collection on hold, it doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy looking at them though!

There are however hardcore Funko fans out there and  the company knows this, that’s why they are aiming to bombard those lucky people who are going to San Diego Comic Con or SDCC with at least nine waves of exclusive figures.

What’s more having the ‘Funko Limited Edition 2016 Comic Con‘ sticker is a prize possesion for any serious collector and a cool trinket for the causal fan.

Suicide Squad Gear At Hot Topic

ht.png

If there is one movie this summer that has me tickled all over with excitement and anticipation, it’s The Suicide Squad. The casting of Will Smith as Dead Shot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Ben Affleck as Batman, and Jared Leto as The Joker… Oh my goodness ladies and gentlemen, we are in for a great ride. Such an awesome movie coming out also means awesome merchandise, and one store I can count on for amazing products is the Hot Topic at the Valley River Center mall here in Eugene, Oregon.

If you have a Hot Topic in your town, then I am sure you have visited there at least once or twice (or they may know you by name) and you understand the awesomeness that is Hot Topic and their merchandise. You know that when it comes to all things nerd, music, movies, TV shows and so much more, they have what you need – and once again they have succeeded in producing that which most others do not sell or offer.

20160704_095735
I ventured to the Hot Topic here on Monday, the 4th, to see what wonders they had in store. I was there a little early and waited patiently for them to open their doors. (I love being early to store openings. Something about it gives me adrenaline rush, like I will be the first one to see this… even though I am sure someone else probably saw this stuff yesterday, but hey, I may be a little neurotic LOL!) Once the big double doors were opened by the awesome store clerk Sarah, I at first got a little sidetracked because they were also doing their Hot Mess sale: shirts and items being $3.99 and up… those boxes were right there in the front so you know I had to look in them, just to see if there was something in my size at such a great deal that I had to own… But unfortunately, I ended up with nothing from that spot. Oh well. Anyway, I spoke with Sarah the clerk and informed her that I was writing a blog about the new clothing line from them, and she was more than happy to allow me the chance to play dress up in the dressing room with the Suicide Squad gear and take pictures. YAY!!

I looked around and sure enough, there on the back wall was the shirt Harley Quinn herself wears in the Suicide Squad movie. Well you guessed it, I requested the Harley Quinn shirt and donned a pair of red and black heart-shaped sunglasses, then ventured in to the dressing room. (Now, I only tried on a couple of clothing items to take pictures in just because there were things I didn’t feel comfortable taking selfies in and posting on this site… at least not appropriate LOL!) But the baseball tee and the glasses… Yes my friend, that had to happen.

Ok, so here below are a couple of pictures of the amazing clothing I tried on. (Please don’t laugh at the shorts and socks, this was the 4th of July and I was rocking my fireworks long socks in the pictures… so yeah.)

OK let me tell you, I am in loooooooove with the shirt and glasses. I wanted to buy them right then and there, but I did not have the $26 dollars at the time to purchase the awesome shirt and the glasses (well, I have to wear my glasses all the time, I don’t own contacts, so they would serve no real use for me at the moment other than to make my heart sing…  But the security device attached to the glasses was poking me in the eye while taking pictures! LOL I was trying to hide it from view, so although I may look super cool, I was in so much pain!) But I do have one of the Hot Cash cards that is good starting on Thursday and will venture back then to purchase the shirt, and get $15 dollars off with a purchase of $30 dollars or more. HAHAHAHAHAHA!!

After exiting the dressing room, I handed the clothing back to the amazing Sarah, sad I could not leave with these babies today, and wandered to the merchandise stand in the back of the store with all the other Suicide Squad gems. There were belts, hats, t-shirts, undies, jewelry… my goodness, so much wonderful stuff. I could hardly contain my excitement rummaging through the stand. Now normally, Hot Topic would have all this neatness on display in the front of the store, but they were still receiving merchandise and having a different sale going on at this time, so that why the stand was in the back.

Here are a couple more pictures of the awesomeness that is Suicide Squad merch. I love the Puddin bracelet!!

One thing I noticed is that most of the stuff was focused around Harley, which makes total sense. I mean, look who is playing her! Margot Robbie! Yes hello, YUM! I am focused on her too, just sayin’. She is one of the main reasons I can’t wait to see the movie. She is soooooo pretty!!!! ^_^

harqui

Now I was with my two wonderful kiddos at the time who were wanting something cool from the Hot Topic, and (like a sucker) I said yes and they both picked up a little something each. I grabbed a little Harley Quinn souvenir myself, the little bow tie in the picture below and headed to the counter.

  • 20160704_140734

The wonderful clerk Sarah was so helpful and made my awkward questions not so painful. (I don’t go around interviewing that many people, or any people for that matter, so this was a little different for me.) I had asked if the merchandise was leaving just as quick as it was coming in, and she replied with an affirmative. I asked her if she was excited for the new movie this August and if she was going to see it, and she replied that she wanted to see it for sure, but she had little ones and that makes it hard to get out to the movies sometimes… but her son is into Batman, which of course is awesome. (My son is into Batman, too ^_^ )

After we finished the transactions and chatted for a bit, I gave her the Skatronixxx website info so she can look for the article and clothing pictures, and she then gave me the information for their Facebook page which I will link here (in case anyone wants to know what the inside of Eugene, Oregon’s Hot Topic looks like. Plus, liking their page is always super nice.www.facebook.com/hottopicvalleyrivercenter

An Interview With Cosplayer Lady Halestorm

collage.png

Hi Readers

It’s time for another cosplay interview this time we meet Lady Halestorm. So far we’ve featured cosplayers from Australia, America and Peurto Rico, now it’s time to meet a British one. Lady Halestorm is a cosplay veteran and we even frequent the same con’s so chances are we’ve ran into each other in the past! Lets find out some more about Lady Halestorm

1) How did you get into cosplaying?

I always loved to dress up as a kid and even as a teen, I’d convince people to have fancy dress parties just so I had another excuse to get a new costume. I never actually knew cosplaying was a real thing until I discovered Jessica Nigri! Once I found out about cosplaying, I went to my first con and was totally blown away by the talent that some people demonstrated. Before this, I’d buy a costume and wear it as it came, but these people made their costumes by hand and spent months doing so! It was then that I decided to give it a go, and I haven’t stopped since.

2) Where do you get your inspiration and ideas to cosplay from? Is it from programs you watch now or childhood programs or both?

I get most of my cosplay ideas from films and TV shows I watch as an adult. I’ll be watching TV and I’ll become obsessed with a character’s outfit to the point where I won’t rest until I have the same one! It’s the same when reading a comic book or playing an xbox game. I’ll see a costume that I love and I’ll spend the next few days planning how I can make it and if it’s a male character, I’ll see how I can gender-bend it. I’m a page model for @itsthenerdylife on Instagram and I sometimes scroll through their page to get inspiration too – the content on there is amazing.

3) How do you put your outfits together are they 100% from scratch and if so what’s been your trickiest part to date?

Unfortunately, due to me not having a sewing machine that works, I haven’t been able to make any costumes entirely from scratch (it’s something I’m saving up for!). I’ve tried to make a few things by hand stitching them, but they never turn into something I’m happy with. Rather than buying a fancy dress costume from a shop, what I usually do is buy some base materials and put them together and tweak until it’s perfect. I have bought a few cosplay pieces in the past, but it works out cheaper to make them myself. There was one costume I made from scratch which was Scarecrow from the Batman game “Arkham Asylum”. It took me three months to make the mask and glove and is still to this date, the most challenging thing I’ve ever had to do because I had to layer the base mask to give it the right expression. I do however, make most of my props from scratch. If I have a limited amount of time to get a cosplay finished then I’ll buy them, but I generally make all my props.

4

4) What’s your favourite cosplay to date?

I’d have to say my Lara Croft: Rise of the Tomb Raider cosplay. It was the first cosplay I actually took on a photo shoot and had loads of fun becoming the character. I hand painted the pistol and spent weeks practicing the make-up – it was my first big project. I got a lot of positive feedback from lots of different cosplayers including SuperMaryFace!

3

5) If you’ve cosplayed at a convention what was the experience like?

Every con I’ve been to, I’ve cosplayed as something. There’s no feeling like someone appreciating the hard work you’ve put into a cosplay and wanting to take pictures. It’s such a friendly community at conventions and each year just gets better.

6) Can we expect to see you at any conventions this year?

YES! I will be at LFCC on Saturday 30th July 2016 and London MCM on Saturday 29 th October 2016.

7) If you could cosplay as anyone and budget wasn’t an issue who would it be?

Definitely Amber’s Bunny Mech from Sucker Punch!

8) Do you have any words of advice for up and coming cosplayers?

First and most importantly, do it for you! Cosplay is all about expressing yourself and if you’re doing it just to get compliments or ‘likes’ you will soon lose your passion for it. There are famous cosplayers and yes they make a lot of money for what they do, but don’t aim for that. Do it because you love it, not because you want to be famous. Also, it is important to keep in mind that if you’re just starting out, your cosplays aren’t likely to be the standard of Jessica Nigri, and that’s ok! In the words of Jake the Dog “sucking at something is the first step to becoming sort of good at something”. It is a very expensive and time-consuming hobby. And lastly, HAVE FUN! It’s always satisfying when your cosplay looks super legit and as if it has been pulled out of a game/comic/film but it’s more fun to put your own twists on them. I personally love to think to myself “what would I look like as this character?” and create cosplays based on that. It makes it more personal and lets you express your creativity. Go take the cosplay world by storm!

2

9) Where can we find you online?

At the moment I’m only on Instagram as @lady_halestorm but I will be setting up a facebook page soon. I’ll announce when this happens so keep an eye out on my Instagram page for updates!

There you go readers Lady Halestorm! Don’t be shy go say hi and say ‘Skatronixxx sent me!’

Previewing This Week In Comics: 6/29/16 Edition

cap

Hey everybody you may know me as the Lucha Underground writer for this site so I’d like to welcome you to my new weekly comic book preview for Skatronixxx.

I recently got a job at a comic book store and have the chance to check out and read these issues before many others get the chance to. I hope this info helps you decide what you may pick up this week and I’ll make sure to do it spoiler free.

I’d like to start my first article by beginning with my pick of the week.

Steve’s Pick of the Week: Captain America: Steve Rogers #2

I know many people are frustrated and bothered by the end of the last issue and I was no different. Cap turning “heel” (that’s a wrestling term for you non-wrestling fans) was one of the weirdest decisions in recent comic book history.

Why is this my pick of the week? Let’s just say this issue may be even more intense than the first one. I will admit though, if you had problems with the first issue you may have them with this one as well.

Also this week from Marvel we are getting new issues of Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Darth Vader, Squirrel Girl and Star-Lord. Just to name a few.

Black Panther has been remarkably well-received at my store so far and is consistently towards the top of the popularity list. I’ve enjoyed the first two issues and am looking forward to checking out the third in the next few days.

As I mentioned, we are also getting new issues of other Marvel comics this week. One I suggest you check out is Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #9. I really enjoy this series and this issue is no different. Each issue of this comic is just plain fun.

On the DC side of things its a bit of an off week. There’s no new Rebirth comics week but we do get some interesting annuals from Teen Titans, Grayson and Deathstroke.

bat
My pick on the DC side of things this week would be Dark Knight III: The Master Race #5.

The series is off to a great start and I think that streak continues this week in issue #5.

This week from IDW we get new release like Bebop & Rocksteady Destroy Everything #5, Micronauts #3 and Wynona Earp #5. As a massive TMNT fan, I suggest you check out Bebop & Rocksteady Destroy Everything #5 this week.

bebop rocksteady.jpg
For other companies like Oni Press, Dark Horse, Image and Boom!, we’ll see some pretty great releases this week from them too. Those being new issues of Rick & Morty, Steven Universe, East of West and Mae.

East of West has been terrific and continues to be in the next issue as does Mae in what is only it’s second issue.

I hope you all have enjoyed my first article on the comics of the week! If you decide to pick up any that I suggest, tweet me at @JellyBeanSteve or @Skatronixxx and let us know what you thought about my choices (rather good or bad).

Thanks for reading and go out and buy comics everybody!

‘Justice League’ Synopsis Revealed

rsz_justice-league-movie-logo-black-square

DC just released the first official synopsis for the ‘Justice League’:

“Fuelled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of newfound ally, Diana Prince,  to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Women work quickly to recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes – Batman, Wonder Women, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash – it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.”

Director of Batman VS Superman: Dawn of Justice, Zack Synder, returns to the DCCU to direct the ‘Justice League’. The film is set to star; Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa, Ezra Miller, and Ray Fisher.

We do not yet know the ‘even greater enemy’, but there will not be just be one villain the justice league will have to face. Jessie Eisenberg has confirmed he will return as Lex Luthor and Steppenwolf has been described as a primary villain for ‘Justice League’. Also, as heavily hinted in  ‘BvS’, could the ‘even greater enemy’ be Darkseid? In addition, it seems Superman will be brought back to life, but as highly speculated, on his return will he be a friend or foe?

Justice League is scheduled for release on November 17th 2017.

Comic Creators You Should Follow On Twitter

ht_twitter_logo_jef_120321_wblog[1]

Ever wonder what your favourite comic book creators are really like beyond the pages? Do you have questions about their creative processes ? Twitter is the best to find your answers!

These are some of the creators I follow.

The frist creator I believe you should be following is Greg Capullo (@GregCapullo). Greg has just recently finished a five-year run drawing Batman For DC. Greg first and foremost is hilarious. Fair warning if you can’t take a joke or are easily offended this account is not for you to follow. If you think you can troll Greg, you are wrong he is a master troll slayer. Besides the entertainment factor, Greg interacts a lot with his fans and regularly shows art progress for his current projects. I met Greg at the Fanexpo Canada convention fours years ago (plan on meeting him again this Sept at Fanexpo Canada) and I have to say he is one of the nicest and coolest creators in the business.

Todd Nauck (@ToddNauckis another comic book artist who has worked for Marvel And DC, as well as Image. Todd will do a periscope broadcast of him drawing while interacting with viewers as best he can. He will also usually do a Q&A with the viewers after he is finished drawing. The coolest thing is when Todd goes to a convention he holds a contest on Twitter. Todd will post commissions he does for fans on Twitter and to enter you just retweet one or all of the sketches he posts during the three or four days of the convention. Once Todd is back from the convention, he uses a random number generator to determine the winner. The prize is an original head sketch of a character of your choice personalised to you. For more specific details check the link in his bio.

Ryan Stegman (@RyanStegman) is a Marvel comic book artist who is currently drawing Uncanny Avengers. Ryan a daily sketch warm up usually every morning from Monday to Friday. About an hour, before he broadcasts on periscope, he sends out a tweet asking for character suggestion. Once the broadcast is over, Ryan puts the sketch up for sale on his site and is usually gone in a matter of minutes.

Jim Zub (@JimZub) Is a comic book writer who has worked for Marvel (currently writing Thunderbolts. get it if you can ) and has two creator owned books through Image (Skullkickers available in trade paperback and Wayward available in trade paperback and currently ongoing. Also recommend getting it). Jim interacts quite a lot with fans and has a website full of priceless advice for becoming a professional writer in the comic book industry, as well as some business and networking information.

These are just a few of the creators I follow. The chances are high your favourite comic book creator is on Twitter; it seems to be the preferred social media platform. Give them a Google or Twitter search to find out.

My article output will be slowed down for a little bit in the coming week or so. I will be moving my family to a better living situation, and Canada Day is right around the corner.

I do have some articles and ideas in the works. I plan on reviewing All-Star Batman #1 by Scott Snyder, John Romita Jr,  Jock, Sean Murphy and Kill or be Killed #1 by Ed Brubaker And Sean Philips shortly after their respected releases in August. These two books, in my opinion, are going to be the biggest releases for the mainstream and creator-owned markets this summer.
