Action Lab Announces New Titles For Start of 2017

With 2016 almost at an end, much to the relief of the majority of the world it seems. Action Lab has four new titles to kick off the first quarter of 2017.

Established series Princeless will return with a Spanish language translation in January, along with the debut of Bryan Seaton and Zombie Tramp creator Dan Mendoza’s new ongoing monthly series, DollFace.

A decidedly different beast from Zombie Tramp, DollFace centres around Lila, a 17th-century soul that has been transported into present time and into the body of a life-size, ball jointed doll, created by a couple of MIT students trying to use technology and a 3D printer to create the perfect women.

Fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Sailor Moon and Weird Science will love DollFace, which debuts with a double-sized 64-page issue.

In February, multiple Eisner award winning creator Franco (Tiny Titans, Itty Bitty Hellboy) brings his next graphic novel series to Action Lab!

A young girl, rumoured to be born from a Peach, is shunned and bullied in her own village and sets off on a quest for Monster Isle to prove to others she is more than just what they think of her.  Her journey brings her encounters with not just monsters, but hunters and pirates and witches.  She must learn that she has nothing to prove to anyone except herself. Masterfully drawn by Agnes Garbowska (My Little Pony), Peach and the Isle of Monsters is sure to appeal to fans of all ages!

Also in February, action hero archetypes are re-imagined in a blockbuster series called Infinite Seven.

This new, ongoing monthly series is written by Dave Dwonch (Cyrus Perkins and the Haunted Taxi Cab, Vamplets) with art by Arturo Mesa and Geraldo Filho. Infinite Seven builds a world of secret world governments, master assassins and international terrorists, and is sure to appeal to fans of GI Joe, James Bond and classic 80s action flicks.

March brings the debut of Amerikarate, a satirical send-up of the same films celebrated in Infinite Seven.

Jam-packed with over the top humour, pop culture references and insane action sequences, Amerikarate celebrates the best and worst of the films we love with a sharp, hilarious script by Corey Kalman and Brockton McKinney (Gingerdeadman, Ehmm Theory), and art by Bob’s Burger’s lead animator, Devin Roth. If you love films like Rambo, Gymkata, Bloodsport and Footloose, you will LOVE Amerikarate!

March also brings the return of Katie Carva in the bad-girl comic with a twist, Vampblade Season Two!

Jason Martin‘s hit series returns with regular series artist Winston Young, and serious upgrades as the fans decide her new costume in the fallout of events from Vampblade Season One #12. While details are being held close to the vest, fans can log in to vote for their favourite costume here.

Along with these four new titles, fan favourite and critically acclaimed all-ages series Action Lab: Dog of Wonder, Peter David’s Artful, Athena Voltaire, Hero Cats and ZAG Entertainment‘s Miraculous will continue into 2017 as well, with the sci-fi epic Blue Hour rounding out the returning lineup. The Danger Zone series Brigands, Cougar and Cub, The Circle, Tomboy and Zombie Tramp will also continue to push the industry forward with the thought-provoking, boundary-pushing, top-shelf quality that the mature reader imprint has become known for.

It looks like Action Lab is starting the year off good with a nice amount of variety, with more new titles to be announced in the new year. Check your local comic shop preview catalogues for these new titles. Remember they arrive in the preview catalogues 2 months before their release date.

[CAST NEWS] Charisma Carpenter Former Buffy Star Joins Lucifer Season 2

Charisma Carpenter

EW reports that former Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Angel star Charisma Carpenter has a guest star role in season 2 of Lucifer. Carpenter is set to appear in episode 5 “The Weaponizer” as Jamie Lee Adrienne, an aging, but still beautiful former Playboy Playmate. Jamie is trapped in a seemingly loveless marriage to a former action movie star, her outward appearance suggests genuine feelings of misery, but that may only be a front.

Did you know that Carpenter herself was former Playboy Playmate, perhaps the role was written specifically for her?

Lucifer Season 2 will air on  Monday 19th September 2016

Buffy Who The Vampire Slayer? – Joss Whedon Would Write For A Female Doctor

landscape-1469634797-dr-who-whedon

Speaking at San Diego Comic Con’s Nerd HQ, Joss Whedon has stated he would write for Doctor Who…but only if the Doctor is female or played by Idris Elba.

In response to a fan’s question of whether he would consider writing for the show, Joss Whedon said ‘Check back when the Doctor is a she. Or Idris Elba!’. However he later stated that he would consider it ‘daunting’ to ‘follow in the footsteps of Moffat and the guys’. Another concern he expressed was the amount of researched involved in writing for Doctor Who.

‘I’d have to do a lot of research. Like, what, watch 40 years of television? I mean, I’ve seen some of it, but let’s get real,’ He told Nerd HQ on Sunday.

Personally, I have to disagree with Joss Whedon’s notion about the amount of research involved. Some of the best Doctor Who stories ignore the continuity previously established in the show – 2007’s Blink, for example, barely even featured the Doctor and is widely considered a classic by Whovians. One of the many things 80s producer John Nathan Turner was accused of was pandering too closely to Doctor Who’s mythology and alienating new viewers in the process. 1985’s The Two Doctors brought back the second Doctor (as played by Patrick Troughton) only two years’ after his last appearance!

Joss Whedon is one of the Media Industry’s strongest writers and I am sure he could think up an original idea that would attract the audience’s imagination rather than rely too heavily on the show’s past. He’s also the mind behind some of the industry’s strongest female characters including the likes of Buffy Summers and arguably one of the most awesome SHIELD Agents of all time: Melinda May (whilst he is not the showrunner of Agents of SHIELD, he was one of the writers behind the show’s very first episode). Doctor Who has a long history of strong female characters – the fourth Doctor’s companion Romana (a Time Lady from the planet Gallifrey) being the most notable example – and who wouldn’t want to see Joss Whedon gift the show another? Hell, I’d give anything to see Joss Whedon write Lalla Ward’s Romana!

Also: note to Joss Whedon – Doctor Who’s been on nearly 53 years, not 40.

2016_SDCC_LE_Sticker_large

Let’s face it, everyone loves Funko Pops, they are this generations version of the Beanie Babies. They are cute, collectible and there seems to be no end to them. I started collecting them forSkatronixxx Jr but stopped after realising that I’d never be able to collect them all. Would I still continue collecting them? Sure if I had the money, but alas I have temporarily put my Funko Pop collection on hold, it doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy looking at them though!

There are however hardcore Funko fans out there and  the company knows this, that’s why they are aiming to bombard those lucky people who are going to San Diego Comic Con or SDCC with at least nine waves of exclusive figures.

What’s more having the ‘Funko Limited Edition 2016 Comic Con‘ sticker is a prize possesion for any serious collector and a cool trinket for the causal fan.

‘Pacific Rim 2’ Finds A New Director

Pacific Rim

Pacific Rim 2 may be back on track but at the expense of Guillermo del Toro, who has handed over Directorial duties to Netflix’s Daredevil Showrunner Steven DeKnight.

According to Deadline, the Buffy The Vampire Slayer writer and Spartacus creator will make his Feature Film Directorial debut with the 3D sequel while Del Toro will remain Producer on the epic Kaiju vs Mechs franchise. Prometheus (2012) scribe Jon Spaihts will pen the movie based on characters created by Travis Beachman and Del Toro with Legendary’s Warcraft executive producer Jillian Share also on board.

Little details are known about monster and machine beat ’em up sequel besides the tentative title Pacific Rim Maelstrom and the announcement that leading man Charlie Human is expected to make a return as hero Raleigh Becket. But curiously enough, Del Toro favourite Ron Pearlman has also been rumoured to step back into the Golden Tipped Boots of Hannibal Chau as well, even though the blackmarket Kaiju dealer met his gristly end in the first instalment.

The news marks the first piece of positive information regarding Warner Bros. and Legendary’s planned franchise after the films dogged history in getting a sequel off the ground. Only last November did Del Toro disclosed that shooting had been postponed with reports also indicating that the film had been cancelled indefinitely.

Pacific Rim was a surprised hit for Legendary, grossing $411 million worldwide with 75% of that figure due to overseas market, proving a big hit with China where it made $111 million.
