‘Doctor Who’ Series 10: Start Date Revealed?

doctor-and-pearl

It’s been a dark year for ‘Doctor Who’ fans. Outside the annual Christmas special there has been promise of no new series of the show until 2017. Thanks to a slip of the tongue from Peter Capaldi however, we might just have a more solid date for the show’s start.

In talking to fans on set whilst filming Series 10, Capaldi said that it would probably be airing in April.

“We’ll be on at Christmas, and then it starts again in April, I think,”

This aligns with the BBC’s comments that the show would likely air in the Spring, and would see a shift back to the airing patterns adopted by much of the revived series. Up until series six the show aired from late March/early April to June or July, before recently moving towards later timeslots. Series 9 began airing in September, and due to the BBC’s major winter show ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ often lasting hours, kept getting pushed back later into the night.

This saw a decline in ratings for the show, with many parents in particular unhappy that their children would not be able to watch during the later times. It is telling then that last year’s Christmas Special aired at 5:15pm, the exact same time as when the show began in 1963, and much earlier than any episode in the show’s history for years.

Hopefully a move back to Spring will see ratings rise again. I for one enjoyed watching ‘Doctor Who’ in its Autumn/Winter timeslot as it feels more effective at that dark time of the year, and had it been aired prior to ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ could have likely done well. Still, last series saw the tone darken significantly, which was a storytelling treat, but it’s all about finding that balance between the content and when it’s appropriate to air said content. This is after all a show initially aimed at kids.

If Peter Capaldi is to be believed though, that means we only have 7 months until the show returns. With spinoff ‘Class’ set to debut in the meantime, and a Christmas Special on the way, that wait doesn’t seem so bad at all.

The Power Of The Daleks Animation Is Official! – Daleks Set To Conquer And Destroy The BBC Store This November

animated-daeks

The BBC have confirmed rumours that they are to release an animated version of the missing Doctor Who serial The Power of the Daleks. The Power of the Daleks is Patrick Troughton’s first serial as the second incarnation of The Doctor and stars Michael Craze and Anneke Wills as the Doctor’s companions Ben Jackson and Polly Wright. All six missing episodes of the story have been produced by the team behind the recent animation for the lost Dad’s Army episode A Stripe For Fraser.

The animated Power of the Daleks has been produced and directed by Charles Norton (A Stripe For Fraser), with character designs by comic book artists Martin Geraghty (Doctor Who: The Flood) and Adrian Salmon (Judge Dredd).

Charles Norton spoke of the animation “The Power of the Daleks animation is the most ambitious Doctor Who archive restoration ever attempted and we’re all very honoured to be a part of such a an exciting project. Intelligent, suspenseful and magnificently staged, Power of the Daleks is one of the great lost classics of 1960s television and a superb example of the black and white era at its finest,”

The executive producer of BBC Worldwide Paul Hembury said “Charles and his team are remarkably talented and passionate about Doctor Who and we are thrilled that fans will soon be able to enjoy this rather sinister but wonderful, classic story,”

The first episode of The Power of the Daleks will be made available on the BBC Store from Saturday 5th November at 5:50pm, exactly fifty years since its broadcast on BBC1. The remaining episodes will be made available the following five days. Power of the Daleks will be exclusive to the BBC Store until Monday 14th November. The animation will be released on DVD on Monday 21st November. There will also be a BFI (British Film Institute) screening of the serial on the 5th November at the BFI Southbank Cinema in London. Further information will be made available on the BFI website.

You can currently register your interest on The Power of the Daleks animation on the BBC Store website.

Power To The Daleks! – Animated Power Of The Daleks Rumours Look To Be True

The BBC posted an animated gif on Facebook this afternoon that appears to be hinting at the rumoured Power of the Daleks animation:

26ufnoeypdmmf1qka

The picture shows an animated TARDIS surrounded by fog – or perhaps the fumes from the mercury pools that can be found on the planet Vulcan (the setting of Power of the Daleks). The post was accompanied with the promise that ‘something is materialising’ at midnight UK time. This wouldn’t be the first time that missing episodes of Doctor Who have been turned into cartoons – the very first animated release was 2006’s The Invasion featuring the Cybermen – but an entirely missing Doctor Who serial hasn’t been animated before. The animation process is costly, therefore it is usually used on serials where only two episodes are missing as opposed to Power of the Daleks’ six.

More news to follow shortly.

SPOILER ALERT! Peter Capaldi To Appear In Class?

p027188h

The Mirror are reporting today that Peter Capaldi is set to appear as The Doctor in the first episode of the new Doctor Who spinoff Class. A BBC insider told the newspaper “What sort of trouble must these kids get themselves in if they need the Doctor to come and bail them out?”

Of course, this wouldn’t be the first time the current incarnation of the Doctor (at the time of broadcast) has appeared in a Doctor Who spinoff. Both David Tennant and Matt Smith made guest appearances in The Sarah Jane Adventures, in The Wedding of Sarah Jane Smith and Death of the Doctor respectively. Torchwood (a spinoff aimed at an adult audience), on the other hand, wasn’t allowed to feature the character amid concerns that it would encourage young kids to watch. The Mirror are claiming that BBC Chiefs had similar concerns about the Doctor appearing in Class (which is aimed at Young Adults) but decided in favour of it in the end.

The TARDIS was spotted at outdoor filming for the show back in April, so it looks considerably likely that The Mirror’s reports are true:

In other news, three new books based on Class were announced for release in October:

class-3

Joyride, What She Does Next Will Astound You and The Stone House are to be written by Guy Adams, James Goss and A.K. Benedict respectively and offer us our first glimpse at the Class logo:

crb5ymhwgam-qbl

Personally, I think the logo for Class is extremely effective in giving off that distinctive  ‘Who’ vibe. It is very close to the style of the Moffat Era‘s Doctor Who logos in the same way that the Torchwood logo strongly evoked the Russell T Davies Era.

Class will be in session on BBC Three Online this October, with episodes due to air a week behind on BBC1. The new spinoff is based in Coal Hill School (where the Doctor is currently caretaker), a location which first appeared in the very first Doctor Who serial An Unearthly Child as the school where the Doctor’s granddaughter Susan Foreman was a pupil. Whether former science teacher and current chairman of the school governors Ian Chesterton (played by William Russell) will appear remains to be seen.

Is It Time To Start The Fans? David Tennant Rumoured For Crystal Maze Revival

criv-pfwiaevq4k

The Sun are today claiming that The Crystal Maze will be returning to Channel 4 this autumn with David Tennant as host. The popular game show will be broadcast this October as a part of the channel’s charity telethon Stand Up To Cancer, with celebrities as the contestants.

A source told the Sun “Even two decades after it last aired, there are very few shows that have been as magical and action-packed as The Crystal Maze. It is still remembered extremely fondly today. Channel 4 are hoping to tap into that nostalgia and believe viewers will jump at the chance to finally take on the show’s adventurous challenges themselves.”

Channel 4 are reported to be open to a series if the celebrity special delivers strong ratings.

Personally, as much as I love Doctor Who and David Tennant as the 10th Doctor, I can’t help but think he seems a bit of an odd choice for host of The Crystal Maze. The Crystal Maze requires a presenter with a more eccentric personality; if they want a former incarnation of The Doctor to host then surely Matt Smith would be a better choice?

Still, I’d rather a David Tennant-fronted Crystal Maze than an Amanda Holden one. Thank God that rumour didn’t turn out to be true…

If David Tennant really is to host The Crystal Maze, then I hope he does it in character as the 10th Doctor. Imagine how fun it would be to see him tell an unfortunate contestant ‘I’m sorry, I’m so sorry. But you’re locked in the room…’ or yelling ‘START THE FANS-AH!’ at the Crystal Dome? Also: who wouldn’t want to see him speeding towards the Futuristic Zone with his long brown coat flapping behind him? Maybe they could even buy the rights to use Murray Gold‘s music track All The Strange, Strange Creatures that would often play when the 10th Doctor was running?

The Crystal Maze is currently open to the public in London as an interactive experience. Booking is open until Saturday 18th March 2017. Single tickets cost £50 on weekdays and £60 on weekends with an added booking fee of £2.50. Full team tickets will set you back £420, whilst an entire session comprising of tickets for four teams made up of 32 people can be bought for £1,680.00. There is also an added transaction fee of £1.00 per e-ticket. Each session in the Crystal Maze lasts approximately 90 minutes.

Karen Gillan Joins ‘Jumanji’ Sequel

karen-gillan.jpg

Karen Gillan has nabbed the female lead in the continuation of the ‘Jumanji’ series. She will star alongside Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart and Nick Jonas in the Jake Kasdan directed film being brought to us by Sony.

Gillan was the final piece to slot into place for the film, as filming is now scheduled to begin in Honolulu next month. Set to play Martha, this is the latest in a line of big roles for Gillan that includes Marvel’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’. Having starred in various smaller roles before a leading role in ‘Doctor Who’ kick-started her career, Gillan seems set to continue on her path to Hollywood domination.

Between myself, @kevinhart4real Jack Black and @NickJonas we've searched far and wide to find the one person to complete our #JUMANJI family. This isn't just any role, but in many ways the most important role of the movie. We had to find a girl. But not just any girl. A girl who has "Chutzpah". Guts, nerve and talent to stand her ground and hold her own against Nick's cool rockstar ways, Jack's relentless energy and genius, Kevin's masterful timing and skills and the big, brown, bald tattooed guy who just simply stands there and oooooozes smoldering, captivating, sizzling, can't take your eyes off this brilliant manly man.. never mind I got drunk on the ol' DJ kool aid again. Ladies and gentlemen, I'm proud to announce a girl who's playing the most important role in our movie – the talented, beautiful and down for a Scottish fight at any time, Ms @KarenGillanOfficial. And yes, this is the girl who is so bad ass she shaved her freaking head for Guardians of the Galaxy. We start production next month in Hawaii and as many of you already know, this isn't a remake or reboot, but a continuation of the awesome JUMANJI story we love. Jake "The Snake" Kasdan directing, Matt "OG" Tolmach producing. Yup, I give everyone nicknames. The adventure and fun continues… #JUMANJI #KarenGillan #RESPECT #GingerTough

Dwayne Johnson took to Instagram to confirm the casting that ended a months long search for the right person.

Gillan is set to reprise her role of Nebula in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2’ as well as costar alongside Ethan Hawke in ‘In A Valley of Violence’.

‘Jumanji’ is set to hit theatres July 28, 2017.

Doctor Who Spin-Off Class To Explore Consequences Of Whoniverse

Class cast

In an interview with Empire Magazine the general premise of Class has finally been revealed. Given that since casting news broke earlier this year no news about the show has been heard, this is an exciting moment for Whovians looking to fill that large void caused by the lack of a full season this year.

Created by Patrick Ness (Chaos Walking) and set in Coal Hill Academy, the show already has quit a bit of legacy surrounding it.

“Coal Hill has existed in Doctor Who since literally episode one. The Doctor’s granddaughter went there. So we thought, ‘All that time activity at the school, has that caused any problems? What do you know, it has!”

So it seems the Doctor’s fondness for the school has left it vulnerable to alien attack, with tears in space-time allowing all manner of creatures from across the universe to invade the school.

The article that further revealed the show is set to debut on BBC One and BBC Three sometime in October, also emphasised the importance of a diverse human group of characters.

“We’re not telling stories of the ‘chosen ones’. It’s happenstance that puts these people [at the centre of things]. What if your timing is just weird and things happen to you? How do you deal with it? I’m interested in real consequences. The Doctor is always exciting, but he never [stays]. He goes off on the next adventure. What happens to real people?”

Well with the premiere date possibly only a matter of weeks away, it shouldn’t be too long before we get to find out.

‘Life Depends On Change And Renewal’ – Power Of The Daleks To Be Animated?

power-daleks-animated-animation-9

The Mirror are reporting today that the 1966 Doctor Who serial Power of the Daleks is to be animated. BBC Worldwide has commissioned a company to animate all six episodes; the identity of the company in question is as yet unknown. Power of the Daleks stars Patrick Troughton as The DoctorMichael Craze as Ben Jackson and Anneke Wills as Polly Wright. The serial was Patrick Troughton’s first story as the Doctor, after William Hartnell’s regeneration in the 1966 serial The Tenth Planet (which also saw the first appearance of the Cybermen).

Whilst all six episodes of Power of the Daleks are currently missing, a few clips of the serial have survived alongside an audio recording of the serial:

Recently there was also an animation test for Power of the Daleks uploaded to YouTube that claimed to be leaked footage taken from the BBC. The video was subsequently removed and one YouTuber attempted a test to determine the reason for the removal:

Although the video claims it proof that Power of the Daleks will be released on DVD, it is worth noting that the BBC’s recent animation of a lost Dad’s Army episode was made for the BBC Store and is yet to receive a DVD release. It is possible that Power of the Daleks would be released in the same way in order to entice more customers to purchase from the BBC’s store.

Power of the Daleks was released as a BBC Radio Collection CD in 2004 and can be bought in the form of a digital download for £10.50 on Amazon.
