Fear The Walking Dead SN2 EP12- ‘Pillar of Salt’

The plot started moving forward in significant ways during an overstuffed episode.

fear-the-walking-dead-episode-212-madison-dickens-935

After an action packed episode last week, it was a given really that this week would be a somewhat calmer affair. That turned out to be simultaneously true an untrue. There was no big, crazy action set piece as there was in the previous episode, but a number of smaller moments kept the tension high. This episode suffered however for two notable reasons, one of which has plagued it in past weeks.

The first reason is that the episode was just too full. With the group as disjointed as they are, we now have multiple running storylines. This episode once again kept much of the focus upon the groups at the Hotel and Colonia, but in addition we have Ofelia off doing her thing, and from the looks of the end of the episode it seems Chris and Travis have split up as well. If the show continues to check in with each of them, that means we’ll have five different storylines to keep a track of. As a result, some aren’t getting the service they deserve.

Take Ofelia’s story. She disappears for a couple weeks, which is fine as it adds some mystery to the show, but then what we do see of her feels rushed and shoehorned in. Some character building flashbacks explain the motivation behind her actions, but by the end we’re back where we started, with her driving off to who knows where. It’s the same with Travis and Chris’ story. We’ve seen them once in the past five episodes. What we have seen is good material, with both going in different directions in their approach to survival, but having the story so disjointed is dampening its effect. A lot of the focus this half season has been upon Nick and the Colonia. This would be fine if, like at the Hotel, there was anything compelling going on there. Whilst the Hotel story has had some thrilling action, patience for the Colonia is waning. It seems as though they’re pushing Nick to be the Rick like figure of the show, placing much of the emphasis on him, but until the character stops being so gullible, and they present a compelling story there, it’s just going to keep damaging the show.

This episode did take steps towards improving the story, as Francesco and his family were taken captive by the gang the Colonia trades with. They were a clear example that faith is waning within the Colonia, which will no doubt bring about some interesting developments, but their part in the story as a whole suffered from a problem that was so prevalent last week as well. We’ve barely seen Francesco, whilst his family were introduced just this episode, so once again we don’t really care about them. Placing so much emphasis on the fate of them doesn’t evoke much emotion from the audience. Sure we don’t want them to die, but if they did we wouldn’t care as much as we would with say Alicia or Strand. (Those two are the only ones I would be sad about dying right now.)

This was also the episode that all the running stories started to intersect. After the emotionally unstable mother of the bride stabbed Strand in her grief, Maddison and Elena go get medical supplies from the same gang trading with the Colonia. Unfortunately, it’s also where Maddison once again starts to go downhill. Overhearing Francesco being questioned by the gang, a description of a ratty haired American boy immediately piques her interest as Nick. Seeing her act to stupidly was painful. As Alicia later states, she risked everything, including all their lives, for a chance at finding Nick.

The show has always been billed as a family drama though, so it was brilliant to see Alicia put Maddison in her place for what she did. Alicia is probably the strongest character on the show, and it’s great to see her come into her own. Maddison clearly isn’t going to get over Nick, so here’s hoping Alicia severs ties with her before she drags the both of them down with her recklessness. Such recklessness as turning on all the hotel lights at night, which does bring Travis towards them, but no doubt a whole load of Walkers as well.

Of course such a stuffed episode as this has a lot of moving parts, so other highlights include:

  • Family drama for Elena as well, as it turns out her brother is one of the bandits at the Warehouse. Gotta think they’ll be seeing each other again, which isn’t necessarily a good thing for the Hotel group.

  • Speaking of the bandits, Nick sees them scouting the Colonia towards the end of the episode. Things are starting to draw to a climax now and I like it. Though those living at the Colonia probably won’t.

  • So Ofelia is headed back to the States. Do you think we’ll see her again, or did the writers just not know what to do with her and think let’s just write her out? I for one hope it’s the former.

  • I enjoyed the montage at the beginning of the Hotel crew fortifying the place, but I just know that it’ll probably be gone soon.

  • So Travis is alone now. I wonder what happened there? Hopefully we’ll finally find out next episode.

And so another episode of ‘Fear The Walking Dead’ draws to a close, though unfortunately weaker than previous instalments. There are several issues currently plaguing the show that need to get gone, otherwise the quality will continue to peter out. Toning down the stuff at the Colonia for a couple episodes would help, as it’s starting to drag, whilst focusing on some of the lesser storylines like Chris and Travis’.  In addition, what should be tense situations aren’t coming across that way, as we’re forced to endure them with characters we really don’t care about. If these problems can be fixed, then the show can continue its increase in quality. Still, things are starting to come to a head now, so it will be interesting to see what these final three episodes bring.

Thor: Ragnarok Director Talks Possible Dr Strange Cameo

Director Taika Waititi is already becoming an old pro at dodging questions about up and coming events in a Marvel movie. There was a picture release of Chris Hemsworth on set dressed in civilian clothing holding a business card in the streets of New York and if you zoom in on said picture you can clearly see the address ‘177A Bleecker St’ which all hardcore Marvel fans know is the address of the Sorcerer Supreme’s Sanctum Sanctorum in Greenwich Village.

Site Digital Spy attempted to get some information from Waititi but his reply came as the following.

Oh, I don’t know,” he said. “I am not sure if… I don’t know actually. I can’t comment on it. It may have just been something for the fans.”

He continued to be not very forth coming with an answer when the site asked him directly if Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange may have a cameo role in Thor: Ragnarok by saying the following

“Might be something like that,” he said. “Might be a little tease. Or maybe a tease just for people who wanted to zoom into that photo.”

So as always with Marvel we don’t have any direct response on  whether or not he will be making an appearance of any kind in the movie.

Thor: Ragnarok appears in the UK on October 27th and Doctor Strange appears in the UK on October 25th.

New Doctor Strange TV Spot Released – But This Reality Is One Of Many…

doctor-strange-spell-cumberbatch

…there’s probably another reality out there where it HASN’T been released. But in this reality, it has. You can see it below:

Many of the weird effects in this TV Spot (such as the strange kaleidoscope effect with the buildings) may look like CGI but in the latest Empire MagazineBenedict Cumberbatch reveals that some of it was actually achieved through practical effects. “You have conceptual art that they show you, but you only really realise what you’re part of at the end of the process. That’s not to say I didn’t enjoy the effects while we were shooting, because a lot of them were real elements, whether it was sets that make a room minuscule or the costume designs’, he said.

Doctor Strange comes to our dimension on the 25th October. The film is based on the Marvel Comics’ supreme sorcerer Doctor Stephen Strange, a neurosurgeon who ends up in a car accident that severely damages the nerves in his hands, meaning he is unable to return to his career. This unfortunate turn of events leaves him bankrupt as he refuses to take jobs that involve being a consultant or an assistant and spends most of his money on further medical treatments to cure his hands (which prove to be ineffective). Stephen hears rumours about a mystical ‘Ancient One’ and sells his remaining possessions in order to afford a plane ticket to East Asia.

The film stars Benedict Cumerbatch as Doctor Strange, Rachel McAdams as Christine Palmer, Mads Mikkelson as Kaecilius, Tilda Swinton as the Ancient OneBenedict Wong as WongChiwetel Ejiofor as Baron Karl Mordo and Michael Stuhlbarg as Nicodemus West.

Ballers SN2 EP9 – ‘Million Bucks In A Bag’

Of course, if you’re a baller the opening of this episode is just another day in the life of! Spencer Strasmore (Dwayne Johnson) wakes up to a naked woman in his shower who calls him Stuart, strangers sleeping on his floor, people cooking in his kitchen, and empty bottles of booze and trash everywhere. Every man’s dream!

It’s a done deal! Mr. Anderson (Richard Schiff) is selling ASM to Andre (Andy Garcia) or is he?

Spencer doesn’t think so after a little talk with Joe (Rob Choddry).

They both then make a pit stop at the home of Ricky Jerret (John David Washington) to pick up a bag. Of what? $1,000,000 CASH! Joe (Rob Corddry) asks, “Ricky! Is that gold bars in the back of that safe?”

Charles Greane (Omar Benson Miller) is having problems juggling his priorities between work and family life and suggests to his wife to get some help! I don’t think the help she got was what he was talking about! Who’s this? Manny Nanny! WTF?

Dennis Jerret (Robert Wisdom) gives more fatherly advice on the request of his son. Looks like he’s finally going to find a home and pops plans to be right there with him! Let’s go for the Hall of Fame!

As Vernon Littlefield (Donovan W. Carter) pushes himself daily with his therapeutic exercises, everyone stays hopeful. Spencer believes he’ll play again, but it’s still up in the air.

Now we know Andre is the snake that he is, he’s going to cover his bases! Watch him make a play for Spencer. Deal sounds sweet! What do you think Spence?

I guess not! The bag of cash is now sitting in Mr. Anderson’s office and Spencer is visiting Vernon for a favor but not before Reggie (London Brown) asks Spencer, “Did you bring a bag of carrots earlier?” Spencer, “Why the would I bring over a bag of carrots?”

Spencer, “I need……”

Funko Announces ‘Scooby Doo’, ‘Fantastic Beasts’ and ‘Street Fighter’ Pop! Vinyl Figures

funko-logo-new-blue-900x308

The ever expanding line of Funko Pop! Vinyl figures is set to become even larger within the coming months, as a slew of new figures have been announced.

First up is a line of figures from the upcoming expansion to J.K Rowling’s Wizarding World, ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’. The line contains several of the main characters from the film, as well as an adorable beast. At the moment this is likely a line only serious collectors and Harry Potter fans will acquire, given the relative obscurity of the characters. Once the film is out however, and people gauge which character they like best, popularity will no doubt soar.

Newt Scamander, wizarding world Magizoologist, is joined by Tina Goldstein, Queenie Goldstein, Jacob Kowalski, Seraphina Picquery, Percival Graves, and a Niffler, a beast with an irrepressible
predilection for anything shiny!”

The figures are all set to release this September.

Coming soon after in October are a line of figures from the ‘Street Fighter’ videogame series. Given the series wide popularity this is a sensible choice, but I for one hope it sees Funko branch out into a variety of different videogame franchises.

The series features OGs Ryu and Ken, as well as Chun-Li, Cammy, Blanka, Balrog, and Dan! You can also collect Hot Ryu from Street Fighter V!

The figures will be released in October.

Finally, Funko also announced a line of ‘Scooby Doo’ figures, my personal favourite of the recent announcements. Considering the amount of different licenses Funko has under its belt, it was only a matter of time before they snagged one of the biggest cartoon series of all time.

Collect Fred, Daphne, Velma, Shaggy, and Scooby!  You can also collect flocked Scooby (only at Gemini Collectibles), and a Scooby & Shaggy 2-pack (exclusively at FYE)!

These figures are set to release in November.

If all the other figures Funko has released weren’t already enough to break the bank, then these new series might just stretch you to your limit. In any case they represent some iconic franchises, and be sure to stay tuned to Skatronixxx for information on the upcoming New York Comic-Con Exclusives.

The Emmy Awards: The Big Winners

Every year the Emmy Awards recognises the top talent on television. Considered to be one of the highest accolades a TV series can be nominated for, especially for an American audience, the awards show normally attracts a lot of celebrity attention. The 68th annual prime time Emmy ceremony was hosted this year by comedian Jimmy Kimmel (a quick glance at the photos made me realise I didn’t know the difference between Jimmy Kimmel and Jimmy Fallon… oops… while planning out this article I had the Lip Sync Battle guy in my head!) who followed the current trend of ‘roasting’ celebrities both present and absent. This hit some high points (any mocking reference of Donald Trump) and some bum notes (suggesting Bill Cosby was coming out to present an award.

The Winners

For your enjoyment, here’s a list of all the folks who walked away with a trophy (and who I would have voted for if I was Queen of the World).

  • Outstanding Drama Series – Game of Thrones (I would have picked Mr Robot. I love GoT but I thought the first series on Mr Robot was much more interesting than the latest season of the Thrones)
  • Comedy Series – Veep (Again, I love Veep, but I think Master of None or Silicon Valley were both stronger than Selina and co this year)
  • Outstanding Limited Series – The People vs OJ Simpson (I probably would have gone for this or Fargo – both were awesome)
  • Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series – Rami Malek for Mr Robot (I totally agree with this. He’s fantastic)
  • Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series – Tatiana Maslany for Orphan Black (I can’t even express how much this woman deserves this award. She plays like 7 individual characters, who sometimes play each other. She should have won this award every year since she started!!)

Tatiana Maslany – Hand this lady all the awards

  • Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series – Jeffrey Tambor for Transparent (I would have chosen Aziz Ansari for Master of None myself, although he may very well just be playing himself…)
  • Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series- Julia Louis-Dreyfus for Veep (I would agree with this too. I think she was fab.)
  • Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie – Courtney B. Vance for The People v. O.J. Simpson (I probably would agree with this. I didn’t see The Night Manager and maybe if I had, I would pick Tom Hiddleston instead)
  • Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie – Sarah Paulson for The People v. O.J. Simpson (I thought she was amazing, and I certainly think she deserves the award, but I might just have picked Kirsten Dunst for her role in Fargo instead)
  • Outstanding Reality-Competition Program – The Voice (I’d not seen any of the shows in this category, but American Ninja Warrior sounded pretty cool…)
  • Outstanding Variety Talk Series – Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (Absolutely. I think John Oliver is one of the best people on TV. Give him all the awards)

rsz_130501152342-john-oliver-comedy-central-story-top

John Oliver saw off two Jimmys and a James for his award

  • Outstanding Television Movie – Sherlock: The Abominable Bride (Yeah, this was pretty good. I think I’d have picked it too. Give Cumberbatch something to celebrate)
  • Outstanding Variety Sketch Series – Key & Peele (I’ve not seen much of these guys, but if Keenan-Michael Key’s ‘Anger Translation’ of Obama’s speech is anything to go by, they probably earned it)
  • Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series – Ben Mendelsohn for Bloodline (There were so many great actors to choose from, but I think I would have gone with Jonathan Banks in Better Call Saul)
  • Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series – Maggie Smith for Downton Abbey (Sorry guys, I’m totally over DA. I’d have picked Maisie Williams in GoT for this one)
  • Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series – Louie Anderson for Baskets (For me, this one had to be Tituss Burgess for Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt – a disappointing loss there)
  • Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series – Kate McKinnon for Saturday Night Live (She’s a very talented lady, so I’m with the committee on this one)
  • Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie – Sterling K. Brown for The People v. O.J. Simpson (I might have picked David Schwimmer for this one, as I thought he was incredible)
  • Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie – Regina King for American Crime (I think I would have picked Jean Smart for Fargo as  was understated and brilliant throughout

Game of Thrones and The People v. O.J. Simpson both took home further awards for writing , as did Aziz Ansari for Master of None. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler were recognised as Outstanding Guest Actresses in a Comedy Series for their appearance on SNL.

New OUAT Promo: 1st Look at Jaladdin!

There’s a whole crap-ton of awesome in this little 15 second video!  I’m happy to see Zelena (The Wicked Witch) walking beside The Evil Queen.  And, here’s why… if they keep redeeming all the villains, then who will Emma & Co. spend all season fighting?  And, I love Zelena!  She’s a villain I can relate to, but her sister has the better wardrobe.

Another big piece of awesome is our first look at Jalladdin!  “Where are we going?” Jasmine asks… Why to Storybrooke, Princess… a lovely place where you must NEVER leave the city limits and heroes always get their happy ending, but it may take several seasons.  In short, a whole new world. (forgive me, I just couldn’t resist.)

At the time of this writing it is 6 days, 5 hours, 55 minutes and 50 seconds until the OUAT S6 premiere, and I’ll be sitting on the edge of my seat for the entire time.

Yes, I do have a countdown timer going for it.  Don’t judge me!

Rumor: Solo Batman Movie Set In Arkham Asylum

benaffleckbatman2_zpsepyy5glv

Back in July, Batman-on-Film reported that Ben Affleck‘s solo Batman movie will take place inside Arkham Asylum, in a film that sounds very similar to the Arkham series of video games from Rocksteady.

One of the hot rumors surrounding Affleck’s Batman movie was that it would serve as a kind of loose adaptation of Grant Morrison’s Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth graphic novel that features Batman breaking up a riot at Gotham’s infamous asylum. Morrison’s comic is a dark addition to the Batman mythology and seems to be perfectly in line with the kind of superhero stories Warner Bros. is looking for; for mature audiences and crammed to the gills with as many recognizable faces as possible.

hqdefault3

Unfortunately (for me at last), it turns out that Arkham Asylum might not play as big a role in the movie than some of us hoped. A new rumor from  Umberto Gonzalez, Heroic Hollywood editor-in-chief, suggests that the standalone Batman movie will not take place entirely in Arkham Asylum. This shouldn’t be particularly surprising now that Deathstroke has been announced as one of the major villains for Affleck’s film, the logistics of fitting him into an Arkham Asylum narrative in any meaningful way would seem pretty tough. You’d basically have to either keep him out of costume  —  which wouldn’t jive with the test footage Affleck released  —  or have him be the driving force behind the prison riots. Either way, I’m going to see it!

What do you think about the role Arkham Asylum might or might not play in the Batfleck standalone Batman movie? Sound off in the comments below!

LEGO Dimensions Meets The Hoff: The Knight Rider Fun Pack And LEGO Batman Movie Story Pack Has Been Revealed!

 ldf17_05

The technologically-advanced car K.I.T.T. (Knight Industries Two Thousand) from the cult TV Series Knight Rider has been recreated in LEGO for a bunch of new in-game screenshots for the popular toys-to-life game LEGO Dimensions. A buildable version of K.I.T.T. is to be released in a Fun Pack with a minifigure of his driver Michael Knight ((played by David Hasselhoff in the television series).

ldf17_03

ldf17_04

ldf17_06

ldf17_07

K.I.T.T. can also be built into the K.I.T.T. Jet and Goliath Armed Semi (a truck usually driven by Knight Foundation founder Wilton Knight’s criminal son Garthe Knight).

The LEGO Batman Movie Story Pack meanwhile is a little bizarre in that it doesn’t feature its main character (who instead comes in a separate Fun Pack  with a Bionic Steed which can also be built into the Bat-Raptor and Ultrabat. LEGO Batman comes with sword-switching and Master Builder abilities). The Story Pack comes with two minifigures – Batgirl (same abilities as Starter Pack Batman) and Robin (agility and dive skills)- and buildable versions of the Batwing (other builds: the Bat-Thunder and Bat-Tank) and the Bat Computer. I have to admit I am a little disappointed that by purchasing the LEGO Batman Movie Story Pack you don’t get a LEGO Batman minifigure. It sucks that you have to buy a separate Fun Pack if you want to play through the story as LEGO Batman. I’m not sure what LEGO and Traveller’s Tales reasoning is behind the idea not to feature LEGO Batman in the Story Pack, although I’m sure they must have a good one.

The LEGO Batman Movie Story Pack, LEGO Batman Fun Pack and the Knight Rider Fun Pack will be released on 10th February 2017.

Pokemon Generations Episode 1 and 2, “The Adventure” and “The Chase”

https://mufasa.technutty.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/pokemon-generations-360x240.jpg

Pokemon Generations is finally upon us and it really is something to behold. Fans have been clamoring for an anime of any size really based on the games. This is the Pokemon Company’s answer to this plea.

The first episode is really wonderful. First it opens up like the original Pokemon Red Version. Everything iconic about that opening is present. The a cursor moves down to continue his game. It starts out with Red and his Bulbasaur taking on a Pikachu. Red immediately throws a Pokeball and catches Pikachu immediately. He then sends it out and it begins to run.

Pikachu runs into a Caterpie and a heated battle starts up. Pikachu soundly defeats it and continues his charge. Then scenes from every region occur one after the other ending with a legendary appearance. This is just really something to be seen. Nostalgia rushed through me as I watched it. I was literally beaming just watching this because clearly Pokemon is something I really enjoy.

This episode does end somewhat abruptly but that is okay. It is definitely worth the watch because of the animation quality and this wonderful journey of Red and Pikachu.

The second episode is quite different and involves the detective Looker looking for Giovanni the leader of Team Rocket. He has been trying to find this mastermind for the longest time but to no avail.

The cool thing is this takes place right after Red and Blue have defeated him. In the games after Red defeats Giovanni, Giovanni does vanish. There is no way a leader of a notorious crime corporation would stay around.

Looker and his police have already cleared up the Celadon Game Corner which is notorious for selling Pokemon for chips. They find out that Giovanni may be holed up in Virdian Gym. They bust in with their Pokemon but find the Gym to be empty. There are burn marks which are clearly from Red and Giovanni’s battle.

The end of the episode shows Giovanni wearing his Heart Gold and Soul Silver outfit. He remarks that Pokemon were created for the sole use of Team Rocket. Then he puts on his hat and walks off. Team Rocket might be done for now, but is it done forever?

I really enjoyed both of these shorts and can’t wait for the other 16 shorts which will be coming up until December 23rd. The Pokemon company is pulling out all the stops for the 20th Anniversary. With all this hard work I am even more excited for Sun and Moon on November 18th!
