Jessica Jones Season 2 will have All Female Directors

Variety has reported that Jessica Jones showrunner Melissa Rosenberg recently revealed that all of the directors for season 2 will be women. Speaking at the Transforming Hollywood 7: Diversifying Entertainment conference on Friday, Rosenberg explained that she had wanted to increase the number of female directors working on the show, and one of the team had floated booking only female directors for the entire 13 episode run. Rosenberg stated that she hadn’t even contemplated the idea of an all female director roster before it was suggested to her, however it was an idea that both she and Marvel were firmly behind.

She told the audience at the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism that hiring an inclusive array of people was “a conscious decision and it’s very important that showrunners do that” This is great to hear, as Marvel has been criticised for a long time about its lack of diversity and inclusion for a long time. Their focus until very recently has been heterosexual white male characters (such as Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Spider-Man etc) and only recently have female characters like Jessica Jones and Captain Marvel, or black characters like Luke Cage or Black Panther been placed front and center. (At this point, I searched Google to try and remind myself of any LGBTQA leads in MCU – sorry, I’ve drawn a blank). Perhaps this will be a great test for Marvel to think about how they can introduce more diversity and speak to the experience of a wider range of the fandom.

Rosenberg didn’t give away anything else about the second season. The show doesn’t have a release date yet and no details have been given yet about the story arc, however she previously revealed that Jessica won’t be ‘healed’ following season 1. You’ll be able to catch Jessica Jones in The Defenders, which is due to land on Netflix next year.

Joss Whedon Weighs in on Marvel vs DC and Directing Star Wars

Joss Whedon has been very quiet recently. Avengers: Age of Ultron was his last outing and, well, it all kind of ended in tears. It received mixed reviews from press and fans, and met with controversy regarding a joke made by Tony Stark and Black Widow apparently claiming to be a monster because she’s unable to have children – and the result was Whedon had to quit Twitter due to the abuse he received on the social media platform. He’s recently popped back up to promote his online video for Save The Day, uniting some of his favourite famous faces to stand up against real life supervillain Donald Trump. To promote the video, Whedon talked to Complex. During the interview he revealed that he was a fan of the Great British Bake Off and that he’s a Buffy/Spike shipper, and also spoke about Marvel vs DC, the Wonder Woman movie, and how he’d love to join the Star Wars family.

rsz_sub-buzz-30851-1474434137-1

On Marvel vs DC: “I did not see Suicide Squad. I saw Batman vs. Superman. Everybody’s got their own method. I think Marvel has been more successful systematically. DC has been more cinematic—their stuff looks amazing—but I feel like Kevin [Feige, President of Marvel Studios] is a really good storyteller. He really cares about coherence, and I feel like style never defeats substance at Marvel, but a little style creeps in. Ant-Man had some, Doctor Strange might be funky, and they are doing very fun things on TV. The Marvel-Netflix thing is working really well. DC’s decision to have their shows on TV with different actors playing the same characters at the same time as their movies, is a little interesting.”

On the Wonder Woman movie (which Whedon was attached to a while back): “I want it to be good. The trailer was just wonderful. I’ll probably be disappointed, me more than anybody else, because I’ll be like, “Wow, my version…” or whatever, but I can still get myself up for it. The trailer had her shield and her fire hammer and yep, I’m good, this will be fine, everything is good. Such an image.”

On returning to a franchise: “I mean, it’s a fun thing to do, to put yourself in the service of something if you think you can add an interpretation. It’s no different than any other storytelling. There are some times when you get micro-managed to death but with Marvel, they let me make two movies that were very much mine. So do I want to make James Bond movie? Yeah. Anne Hathaway does Catwoman again? Sure, I’m in. Do I want to make a Star Wars movie? Yeah. I was like, “I don’t want to make a Star Wars movie. Like, god dammit, why?” But I saw the trailer for Rogue One awhile ago and I was like, “I want to do that.” To make a Star Wars movie and not be wed to the bigger picture.”

I would love to see a Joss Whedon helmed Star Wars spin off movie, but whatever he does, I hope he gets back to work soon!

James Gunn Wants a Nebula solo movie as much as we do!

James Gunn has had quite a week this week. Not only has he delighted fans with an awesome new poster and a cool sneak peek at the eagerly awaited Guardians of the Galaxy vol 2, but he also stated on Twitter that he’d be up for doing a Nebula solo project in the future. The film maker, who regularly communicates with fans via social media, agreed with a comment made on Twitter by a fan who said Nebula was his favourite character and should have her own movie.

But before you start pre-ordering your Nebula movie t-shirt and tweeting Karen Gillan messages off congratulations (though she did reply to his tweet supporting the idea!), this may be easier said than done. The GotG franchise is very much built on an ensemble, and Marvel hasn’t yet made any moves to give the characters solo projects. Also, Marvel has their movie calendar filled up until 2020, so unless Nebula becomes a massive break out success in vol 2, it’s unlikely she’ll pull a Spider-Man and get her own film snuck in before then.

However, it’s not entirely hopeless. We do know that Nebula will have a significant role in GotG vol 2, which is great news, as in my opinion she was hideously underused in the first film! Also, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has suggested that Nebula will be round for a while. “If people know the comic lore, Nebula has a lot of varying different roles to play over the course of a lot of different titles in the comics,” he said. “We have somebody like Karen, and you have a look that is so weird and so great. I think that’s something we’d all like to see again.” It’s not yet confirmed if former Doctor Who star Karen Gillan has been cast in Avengers: Infinity War, but certainly it’s what the fans are hoping for.

Guardians of the Galaxy vol 2 is released in the UK on 28th April and 5th May in the USA

Scream Queens S2 EP2 – ‘Warts and All’

The previous episode left us wondering if the ‘green meanie’ killed Chanel No.5, but no need to worry as she is very much alive, and even after seeing the werewolf lady being beheaded everyone is still treating her badly. The Chanel’s and the police suggested she was the killer even though she was locked in the bath. However, this episode was not all bad for Chanel No 5, as she (almost) found love with wart-covered patient Tyler (an unrecognisable Colton Haynes), but of course this was short-lived as he was murdered at the end of the episode.

rsz_scream_queens_s2_ep2

On the left, Emma Roberts as Chanel No1, On the right, Colton Haynes as Tyler

Zayday and Chamberlin teamed up to investigate and confront Munsch about the hospital and the previous massacre of the hospital staff back in the day. This prompted Munsch to reveal the real reason she purchased the hospital, she believes she is dying from a mystery disease and wants find a cure. Determined to help, Zayday figures out that Munsch has Kuru, which she contracted in New Guinea after accidently eating human flesh. Zayday tells Munsch she had a year to live, what they don’t know is that Nurse Hoffel is listening in, but we do not yet know what she will do with this information.

This episode saw the return of Chad Radwell, who dresses up in the red devil costume to scare Chanel No.1, and also reveals it was Chad who was in the red devil costume at the end of the season 1 finale. Chad becomes extremely jealous of Chanel No.1 and Dr Holts relationship, prompting a tense game of ‘Squash’ and a steamy shower scene. This also leads him to find out Holt’s crazy hand belonged to a serial killer.

While wondering the halls, Munsch is attacked by the ‘green meanie’, and impressively she takes him down, but is interrupted by Chanel No.3 and Dr Cascade before she can unmask them. This leads Munsch to contact Denise Hemphill, now Special Agent. After speculating once again that Zayday is the killer, Denise suggests they should go to see Hester for help. Hester locked away, somehow seems to know all the details about the murders, but refuses to help until they give in to her demands.

I really enjoyed this week’s episode, it was so funny, probably due to the return of fan-favourites Hester, Chad and Denise, who are arguably the funniest of all the characters.

Last season killed off plenty of main characters and now we are really attached to these characters, and with Chanel No 5 surviving, will they be brave enough to kill off any of them this season?

Some questions we want to know; Will Holt be able to keep his killer hand under control? What does Nurse Hoffel want with the Chanel’s? Who will win Chanel No.1’s heart, Dr Holt or Chad? How does Hester know about the new killings? Who is the ‘green meanie? And is the hospital massacre killer and the present day killer the same person?

Have you already worked out who the ‘green meanie’ is? Let us know you theories in the comments.

Check out a clip of the next episode below:

American Horror Story: Roanoke ‘Chapter 6’

Last week’s episode ‘Chapter 5‘ we learned of Edward Mott who built the Roanoke House, however  during construction there were a few gruesome incidents. The Colony still continues to haunt the Millers. Matt and Shelby also find themselves on the wrong side of the very odd Polk family and the matriarch Mamma Polk (Frances Conroy).

Roanoke ‘Chapter 6’

Chapter 6 starts with the following statement:

My Roanoke Nightmare was the television success story of 2015. With minimal promotion, the show garnered 23 million views by its finale, topping that week’s airing of Sunday night football, Empire, and The Walking Dead. Eager to capitalise on the success, the network asked the producer to create at follow-up series.

The Producer of My Roanoke Nightmare Sidney James (Cheyenne Jackson) armed with a film crew ambushes Frank, the network president, with a surprise on-camera pitch. Sidney details the documentation od the reality that the audiences are craving, including social media and marketing, he wants to reunite the Millers and the two actors who played them for his new his idea Return To Roanoke: Three Days in Hell, which he wants to be a hidden camera reality show that will be filmed during the “Blood Moon” and capturing the real reactions to the fake scares he intends to set up. Sidney also mentions  that he brought the Roanoke house from Matt (André Holland) and Shelby (Lily Rabe) . He emerges from the meeting with the greenlight for 13 episodes, however, its short-lived when Sidney’s assistant Diana Cross (Shannon Lucio) tells him Shelby refuses to participate.

fxs-american-horror-story-roanoke-chapter-5-sidney-670x388

10 weeks before the “Blood Moon” Sidney sets up an interview with Shelby in Ojai. Since the show, Shelby and Matt have separated and she has been receiving death threats. Shelby had a fling with Dominic Banks (Cuba Gooding Jr.), who played Matt. Shelby insists that Dominic is not to be involved, however, unbeknownst to her, Dominic is already contracted. Two weeks prior to the “Blood Moon the Roanoke house is being fitted with additional cameras and scare gimmicks to create drama. Alissa, a crew member had found a circle of dead fetal pigs to Diana’s and Sidney’s attention, no one knows how they got there. It’s not the work of the Polk family, they have been MIA for weeks.

wp-1477020423675.png

Agnes Winstead (Kathy Bates), the actress who played “The Butcher” talks about her experience on the show but there is a little more to Agnes’s story, an incident occurred when Agnes terrorised and slashed at bystanders down Hollywood Boulevard, which landed her a stint in a mental health facility and charged with assault. Sidney thinks Agnes is responsible for the fetal pig incident at Roanoke and slaps her with a restraining order. My brain keeps telling me that perhaps Agnes isn’t crazy, but actually possessed by The Butcher while filming the show? Or am I over thinking it?

fxs-american-horror-story-roanoke-chapter-5-agnes-goes-crazy-670x388

Another incident has happened at the Roanoke house, this time Greg, one of the crew is cutting wood for the hot tub, when his chainsaw was thrust into his neck, removing his head clean off and obviously killing him. Sidney decides to go ahead with production but Diana is furious and tells Sidney she’s done and speeds off, she films an affidavit about what is happening on the show and why she is leaving. Diana stops and turns the camera around and we see what looks like a Roanoke colonist, she continues to drive when the Piggy man emerges from behind her seat and kills her. Diana’s footage was recovered three months later by police, but her body was never found.

Audrey Tindall (Sarah Paulson), who played Shelby and her new husband Rory Monahan (Evan Peters), who played Edward Mott arrive at the house first, while filming on his phone she catches a glimpse of Agnes who smashes a window. Audrey has been terrorised by Agnes who has been stalking her. When Matt and Lee (Adina Porter) arrive you could cut the tension with a knife.

fxs-american-horror-story-roanoke-chapter-6-rory-and-audrey

Another statement appears stating:

Over the next three days during the blood moon, every participant in the series died under mysterious circumstances.

Except for one.

As the night goes on in the house, Shelby tries to reconcile with Matt, while Monet Tumusiime(Angela Bassett), who played Lee, tries to blame method acting as Lee turned her into an alcoholic. When Dominic arrives, Matt sees red and attacks him until the others break it up. Audrey gets out of the shower to find the Piggy man staring at her. Rory,  furious tries to find Piggy man, thinking it’s a set up by Sidney gets hacked to death by the Jane sisters, who finally get to complete their MURDER tableau.

The show never aired and we are told that what we’ve been seeing is the assembled found footage.

Lucifer SN2-EP4 ‘Lady Parts’

670

Last week Lucifer and Decker investigate a gruesome murder after a video of the crime surfaced on social media, and Mamma Morningstar is to live as Charlotte Richards  as her punishment handed down by Lucifer. We also seen Amenadiel really struggling with the loss of his powers.

SN2-EP4 ‘Lady Parts’

It looks like Lucifer (Tom Ellis) and Decker (Lauren German) have another serial killer on their hands this week as they investigate the death of two young women. Lucifer is distracted while in session with Dr Martin (Rachael Harris), he is playing Sex Words with Friends on his first mobile phone with Maze (Lesley-Ann Brandt). Dr Martin tells Lucifer, his distraction could be a barrier for his problems, but Lucifer hears that distraction will help from having to deal with his problem with mamma dearest.

lucifer-2-04-lady-parts-siri

Lucifer isn’t the only one who is distracted and you can see that when they arrive at the crime scene, Lucifer senses that Decker needs to get out and live a little. Charlotte (Tricia Helfer) looking like a Stepford wife is a little frazzled as she throws her failed spicy chicken casserole in the bin, Charlotte tells Maze she has learnt that having sex with her husband renders him mute. But even though it’s worse than hell she gets to be close to her sons.

Ella (Aimee Grarcia) figured out that one of the young girls Daria died from mandrake poisoning. With Decker and Dan (Kevin Alejandro) getting a divorce, she will need to find a new place to live, which Lucifer finds as the perfect distraction and makes some calls on Decker’s behalf. The duo arrives at the house of the last person Daria had spoken with, they are met at the door by a man brandishing a butcher knife and covered in blood… It’s ok he was making sausages. Decker also notices how distracted Lucifer  in frustration he calls Maze to ask her to Chloe out for drinks in hopes it distracts her.

lucifer-204_scn15_bs0062_hires2-800x534

Amenadiel (D.B. Woodside) stops by Dr Martins to return a book, she can tell something is wrong and as a friend, she offers to listen. However, he tells Dr Martin that his problem is physical, that things aren’t working like they used to. Dr Martin thinks that Amenadiel is talking about Amenadiel Jr not standing to attention and tells him to loosen up, if only that was the problem it would be differently easier to fix .

lucifer-204_scn20_bs0115_hires1

Decker and Lucifer find Daria’s roommate dead in Daria’s apartment with the same triangle stamp on her wrist. Decker rocks up at Lux and wants to go over the lab report, Maze suggests that she and Decker go to the bar that the roommates had been to. It quickly turns into a girls night, and Dr Martin suggests they all share a secret to break the ice. We learn Dr.Martin was a phone sex operator, Ella stole cars, we already know Maze was forged in hell and Decker drops the divorce bomb.

lucifer-season-2-episode-4-500x333

Decker and Lucifer figure out that Daria’s neighbour Lily is responsible for the girl’s deaths.  Maze tells Lucifer that she and Decker are going to be roommates, Lucifer is convinced all the women is his life are ganging up on him. Amenadiel asks Lucifer what he asked their father for in exchange for bringing their mother back to hell. Amenadiel points out that Lucifer hasn’t fulfilled his part of the deal, and Decker’s life could be in grave danger. However, Lucifer doesn’t believe their father would be interested in one little soul….. Decker is driving while talking to a landlord about an apartment, when she is suddenly hit by another car.

Lucifer airs Mondays at 9pm ET on FOX.

Who will Thanos Kill in Avengers: Infinity War?

Online geek news site ComicBookMovie.com has written an interesting opinion piece about the six characters most likely to be killed off in the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War movies. Even though the first film isn’t due for release until 2018, there is a lot of speculation about who will make it out of the war alive.

If you’re interested in who the good people at CBM think will meet a premature end at the hands of giant purple villain Thanos (Josh Brolin), you can read all about it here. Over at Skatronixxx towers, I decided to have a bit of a ponder on the question too… and on some I totally agree, but some our opinions differ.

Place your bets, please!

rsz_chris-evans-captain-america-116369.jpg1.Captain America aka Steve Rogers (Chris Evans)

This almost seems like a forgone conclusion at this point. In the real world, we know that Chris Evans‘s contract with MCU has just about come to an end, and the man behind the shield may want to move on to pastures new. In the comics, Captain America has died before, and indeed, many fans were expecting to see Steve Rogers expire in the Civil War movie. So Cap dying towards the end of the movie would not be totally unexpected, and would pave the way for Falcon to pick up the mantle.

rsz_show_b02_capt_america_0310_lands2. Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr)/War Machine (Don Cheadle)

Now, there was some debate in our house about this one… War Machine was critically injured in Civil War, essentially making him a sitting duck when Thanos comes to town. I think he might be killed off early on, causing rage in the Avengers camp. Plus, Thanos just killed him in the comics, so it’s a real possibility. However, my partner raised a good point… Robert Downey Jr will have the same contract expiry as Chris Evans, so his tenure in the MCU could be coming to an end, making him a prime candidate for execution. My thought is, would MCU kill off two characters with the iron suits? I don’t feel like they would, and if one was to go, my money would be on War Machine, but maybe they’re in the mood for a shake up…?

rsz_1hawkeye3. Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner)

Apologies in advance to Jeremy Renner, but this one is a bit of wishful thinking for a lot of MCU fans. Hawkeye has been a bit of a dull character, and (as may people have commented) they’ve now introduced his lovely family and given him a bit of story. WHEN WILL YOU LEARN THAT YOU CANNOT HAVE NICE THINGS?! His death would spark rage in Black Widow (who won’t die because the internet wants to see her solo movie) and would have a tragic human angle as a husband/father would be lost. Also, there is literally zero talk of a Hawkeye solo outing, so he’d be an easy and dramatic kill – possibly to pave the way for the final battle.

4. Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders)rsz_1maria_hill_-_cobie_smulders.png

Now this is a bit of an odd choice for me. I’ve based it on the fact that a) I don’t think all the lady characters will make it through the movies unscathed; b) Black Widow, Scarlet Witch, Gamora and Captain Marvel will probably survive due to potential future movies; and c) they could always bring her back via Tahiti (it’s a magical place) if they wanted to. Maria’s been a bit quiet since The Winter Soldier movie, but Cobie Smulders is confirmed to be returning for Infinity War, so I think Ms Hill could make the list of Thanos’s casualties, possibly in a dramatic scene taking out a S.H.I.E.L.D office

rsz_o-the-avengers-hulk-facebook.jpg5. Hulk (Mark Ruffalo)

This is a bit of a wild card, and would possibly make a good cliffhanger for the end of Part 1. As we know, the Hulk is super powerful, so a being that could kill the Hulk would be a scary prospect for the ever-expanding band of superheroes. Again, this would be a huge blow for Black Widow (honestly, I’m not anti-Black Widow, I just think there’s more interesting women they could be featuring for solo projects…) so perhaps bumping off Barton AND Banner would be overkill (pun totally intended!) but possibly necessary to have a big finish to lead into part 2.

At this point, I realise I’ve killed off nearly all the original Avengers. This was not intentional, though would be an interesting play, MCU…

6. Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautistarsz_nejz9ps3doigmo_2_b

I think the big blue guy is going to be the last fatality at Thanos’s hand, and I think he’s going to take the purple fella with him. In the comics, Drax and Thanos have got history – in fact, Drax died at one point attacking Thanos (oops!). In the movie Guardians of the Galaxy it was established that Drax would not rest until he had got vengeance for the murder of his family, and that they could not rest in piece until Thanos was defeated. A hero’s sacrifice is often required in these stories, and Drax seems like the most likely candidate for this. Sorry man, I’ll be sad to see you go!

Do you agree? Disagree? Have you got any better ideas? We’d love to hear from you in the comments!
