Interview With The Tick Animated Series Director Hank Tucker

Hank

Hank Tucker is a Storyboard artist, producer, director, and most recently independent comic book artist and writer. I asked Hank about his comic book The Actual Roger, his productive career in animation and of course his time on the short-lived The Tick animated series. Based on the comic book by  Ben Edlund . Spooooon! (read a book!)

actual roger

How did you get connected with Alterna Comics and what was the inspiration for The Actual Roger?

Alterna was one of six publishers I submitted Roger to when I finished it. I got names from Wikipedia looked them up and followed submission guidelines. It was kind of fun. Out of the six, two got back to me at the end of the week with an offer. One of them was Alterna. I went with them because they actually included a contract and they had a New York Times bestseller to their credit (FUBAR! Zombies in History. Very cool…)

Roger was inspired by a dream I had when I was nine (Roger’s age). Just like in the book, I was lying on the floor, pushed up to get a snack or take a leak and kept going up! In the dream, I soared around the house about a foot and a half off the floor.

The overall “thematic” inspiration, I guess, was the sense of – my personal reaction to – how controlled, adjusted and “corrected” by the media and government (often hand in hand!) our lives have become. Even heroism! Heroic acts, it seems, have to be approved of and guided by people who’ve never done a heroic thing in their lives. Crazy. But also interesting…

Did you grow up reading comics as a child or did you discover them later in life?

I discovered comic’s when I was six at a children’s shoe store in Woodland Hills (or maybe Tarzana). They had a Superman comic laying on a table which I picked up and was totally bowled over by. My mom wouldn’t me keep it so I started drawing what I could remember of it when I got home. These were my first drawings. Hence my love of drawing hooked up directly to my then love of comics.

It’s funny, though, I read Superman, Superboy, and the Legion of Superheroes…most at the time drawn by Curt Swan. But the minute Swan stopped drawing them I stopped reading them. I didn’t touch comic’s again until ’94 when I became storyboard supervisor on Fox’s Spider-Man show. While there I picked up the McFarland Venom intro issue and became totally hooked. Up to then, I’d mostly avoided Marvel having been a DC (i.e. Swan) fan exclusively! It wasn’t the drawing in that one so much as the situation and characters that grabbed me. I kept up with the series for a while then moved on…I think when Spidey became a clone I lost interest.

Throughout my career I’d been literally surrounded by great comic book people and their work: Jack Kirby, Russ Heath, Mike Ploog, Doug Wildey and many others. Knew them and frequently worked with them. And the world we all occupied was all about comics even though the medium we were engaged in was animation. It was a world of Heavy Metal, Moebius,  etc. Comic’s and comic artists were sort of hard-wired to animation then and now.

Wow! What was your experience like with Jack Kirby?

In ’79 Jack was working for Ruby and Spears in Sun Valley designing and helping pitch shows.  Thundarr the Barbarian – my first storyboard gig in animation – was one of them. He’d mosey over to my supervisor John Dorman’s office now and then for a good natured ribbing by John (we all got one regularly, Jack no exception). I was pretty much a bystander, but we’d chat now and then…usually me asking dumb questions like, “oh you don’t like Stan? Why?” So he’d light up a cigar (we smoked indoors in those days), and he’d fume/riff on some recently published statement of Stan’s. Not having grown up a Marvel guy it all went a little past me. One thing, though, he seemed happy. Very at ease. Steve Gerber of Howard, the Duck fame, was there, too, on the same show. His office was across from mine. Unlike Jack he seemed pained most of the time. Partly the life of a story editor. Partly I think he was still in some kind of litigation with Marvel. Or he had been and lost…
Did you have any formal training or education for being an artist or were you self-taught?

I never went to a formal art school. In my last years of Taft high, Cal Art’s was newly opened, but I was advised against going there by people like Chris Jenkins (story man for Jay Ward) since it was run by avant-garde animator Jules Engles. I wanted to learn traditional animation. But Engles had no intention of teaching that. He was all about scratching images onto film and hypnotic light patterns, ala National Film Board of Canada; shoot-me-now-type stuff for a 17-year-old Disney nut.  It wasn’t until the late 70’s -early 80’s that they started their character animation program and people like Lassiter and Burton showed up. I was the early bird that missed the worm. My education was handled by just getting into the business (with help from a mentor) and being surrounded by great artists.

It’s always great to hear stories about artists working for Fox or Disney without formal art school. Is that less common today or is your art still enough proof for big companies to consider you?

I think at this point if you’ve done it, in their minds, you can keep doing it. As to people coming in “off the street” like me, it depends on what the work looks like and who’s looking at it. I’d been in animation for five years animating and assistant animating. Then I decided to get into boards. So on my own, I storyboarded scenes from books I’d read. When a friend I’d met on Bakshi’s Lord Of The Rings (Art Vitello) saw it, he recommended me to Dorman at Ruby/Spears. Dorman liked it so I was in. But the same goes with someone coming out of a school. They have to like what they see. Having a degree is nice but if the portfolio sucks…well, good luck.

You have been involved with many classic cartoons such as Darkwing Duck, Spider-Man, G.I Joe and Bonkers, but the most iconic one (at least in my opinion) has to be The Tick. How did you get that gig?

Well, let me say first off, any gig of mine that was worth anything dating from 1979 on can be pretty well traced to Art Vitello. Again, Art recommended me to Ruby/Spears in ’79, then pulled me in the following year (’80) to Marvel – where we worked with Stan. Then in ’85 he pulled me back over to Disney, but this time, it was Disney TV when they started that division. Art left two years in, eventually going to Warners where he produced and directed Tiny Toons, then to create and Executive Produce Tazmania. Gary Kreisel at  Disney tried to get him back but instead he recommended they try me as a producer. So they did.

I produced/directed 17 Goof Troop episodes and 4 Bonkers episodes (don’t even ask about that one!)  before quitting to go to the “new” Marvel beginning ’94  (back with Stan and now Avi Arad)  as a storyboard supervisor. While I was there, Art had quit Warners and went to take over the – how do they say it? “troubled” -production of The Tick animated series for Graz Entertainment and Fox.

The previous producer had been let go, and Art was brought in to supervise post on the first six episodes coming back from Korea, then to pre-produce and direct the next seven, including write a couple. When it came time to board his first solo episode he called in some of his favourite board guys – me one of them – to freelance on it. So I picked up the 1st half of his “The Tick Vs. The Tick” and did it at night while supervising on Spider-Man. It turned out they really liked mine in particular.  When the first season aired and became a hit, Art left to develop and pitch his own projects. He recommended me to take over the show, especially considering how much they’d liked my board. I’d produced already for Disney so they (Stephanie Graziano, head of Graz Ent.) interviewed me then set up a meeting with Ben Edlund the show’s creator/head writer. We met at the Ritz Carlton in Pasadena and had a pleasant chat  (no other kind of chat conceivable with Ben) mainly I think about directing and directors (I was a staunch Kubrick fan). Showed me some doodles on a pad he had just done before I’d arrived of what he called “a little wooden boy” -very insane drawing – and said it would be figuring into the first new episode.  He seemed particularly impressed that I’d worked on Thundarr the Barbarian. Later he told me that was what cinched me as producer/director of The Tick.

Was it a fun ride while it lasted?

Two of the best years of my life…and that’s 59 years we’re talking.

Any new projects in the works whether with comics or storyboarding?

Right now I’m desperately (no exaggeration!) trying to finish the 5th and last issue of the Roger miniseries, after which there’ll be a print run of all five as a compilation trade paperback. Simultaneously I’m boarding on a very fun feature for Mike Johnson (co-director of Corpse Bride)…and Simulsimultaneously I’ve been asked by a small Shanghai-based production company to write a feature for them. They apparently read Roger, fell in love with the style, and there was the email one morning! I pitched three ideas, and they chose one and just sent me the contract. Very strange. So on it goes…

‘He’s Back, And It’s About Time!’ – Doctor Who: The Movie Comes To Blu-Ray This September

doctor-who-tv-movie-mcgann

BBC Worldwide have announced a Blu-ray release for Doctor Who: The Movie. The film was a co-production between the BBC and Universal and was broadcast as a TV Movie on the 27th May 1996 on BBC1 in the UK and 14th May on Fox in the USA. It stars Paul McGann as the Doctor, Daphne Ashbrook as one-off companion Grace Holloway, Yee Jee Tso as Asian-American gangster Chang Lee and Eric Roberts as the Master. To date it remains Paul McGann’s only full television appearance, although he later returned in the 2013 minisode Night of the Doctor and continues to record audio dramas for Big Finish Productions.

The nature of the Blu-ray release is unclear. Whilst it is thought that Universal may hold a film copy of the TV Movie in their vault (which would allow for a ‘true HD’ picture), it is very unlikely that the film will be restored into full HD. The special effects were not made in high definition, therefore would need to be created entirely from scratch and the entire film would have to be re-edited as the movie was originally put together on videotape. Steve Roberts of the Restoration Team (who worked on the previous classic series releases including 2013’s Spearhead From Space Blu-ray) also tweeted ‘People asking about an alleged DW TVM Blu-ray, you know as much as I do’. The likelihood therefore is that this will be an upscale similar to the Blu-ray treatment of Series 1-4.

Amazon’s product description is as follows:

Whilst returning the Master’s remains to their home planet of Gallifrey, the Doctor (Sylvester McCoy) crash lands the TARDIS on Earth in end-of-century San Francisco. Gunned down by a street gang, the Doctor is rushed to hospital, where exploratory surgery by Doctor Grace Holloway triggers a regeneration. The Master has meanwhile taken over the body of a paramedic and infiltrated the Doctor’s TARDIS, which he plans to use in his latest scheme to take over the Doctor’s new body and destroy the world. Filmed as the pilot for a revived ‘Doctor Who’ series – tailored to the American market – which subsequently failed to materialise, this feature-length adventure introduces Paul McGann as the renegade Time Lord.

The release is listed as containing two discs on Amazon. Whilst this has yet to be confirmed by BBC Worldwide, it is safe to assume that this will be the case given that the Special Edition DVD release also contained two discs. Whether the special features from the Special Edition DVD will carry over is another matter, although it would be a shame if the Blu-ray doesn’t at least contain the Behind The Scenes location footage and alternate takes. Hopefully there will be some new features too; a retrospective on the TV Movie featuring contributions from Paul McGann and Daphne Ashbrook would be nice.

Doctor Who: The Movie comes to Blu-ray on the 19th September 2016. Hopefully these shoes will fit perfectly and classic series Blu-ray box sets will follow.

Prison Break SDCC 2016 Reveals, Synopsis and Trailer

prisonbreak

TV’s favourite brothers will be returning to our screens next year in the Prison Break limited series. That’s right, Michael Scofield (Wentworth Miller) and Lincoln Burrows (Dominic Purcell) will be back! I’m sure your thinking ‘but didn’t Michael die’, but we have been promised a ‘logical and believable explanation’ for why he escaped death. The official synopsis below:

“Prison Break is back and ready for its biggest escape yet. In the thrilling new event series Prison Break, original series stars Wentworth Miller (“The Loft”, “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow”), Dominic Purcell (“Equilibrium”, “Legends of Tomorrow”), Sarah Wayne Callies (“The Walking Dead”, “Colony”), Amaury Nolasco (“Transformers”, “2 Fast 2 Furious”), Robert Knepper (“Hitman”, “Transporter 3”), Rockmond Dunbar (“Soul Food”, “The Mentalist”), Paul Adelstein (“Private Practice”, “Scandal”), are reunited for an all-new adventure spanning the globe and featuring the signature thrills and cliffhangers that were hallmarks of the original series when it aired on FOX from 2005-2009.

The original action drama centred on Michael Scofield, a young man determined to save his convicted brother, Lincoln Burrows, from death row by hatching an elaborate plan to escape from prison. In the all-new event series, filmed on location in Morroco, clues surface that a previously thought-to-be-dead Michael may be alive. Lincoln and Sara, Michael’s wife before he was presumed dead, reunite to engineer the series biggest escape ever, as three of Fox River State Penitentiary’s most notorious escapees, Sucre, T-Bag and C-Note are pulled back into the action.

‘Prison Break’ was an immediate critical and ratings hit when it premiered on FOX in 2005, garnering Golden Globe Award nominations for Best Television Series – Drama and Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series. The original producing teams, including series creator Paul T. Sheuring, Neil Moritz, Marty Adelstein and Dawn Olmstead, will return to executive produce the new series with Sheuring serving as showrunner/writer.”

This year at San Diego Comic Con series stars Wentworth Miller, Dominic Purcell, Sarah Wayne Callies and Robert Knepper reunited for FOX’s Action Showcase panel. Where they revealed exclusive details for the upcoming season, including a new clip. Here are some of the reveals below:

  • Wentworth revealed “Michael has a fresh set of tattoos and they are central to the plot, but they don’t work the same way they did the first time round.”
  • When a fan questioned that Michael was dead at the end of the last season, Sarah Wayne Callies joked “We’ve all been dead, Sweetheart.”
  • Robert Knepper suggested we may see a different T-Bag, a more mature, less murderous version (but surely that won’t last).
  • When asked ‘how Michael Scofield would do on The Flash or Legends of Tomorrow’ (where he plays Leonard Snart aka Captain Cold), Wentworth replied “He has always had a comic book facet, superhero facet. He can endure what the other could not… I don’t think he and Snart would get along, necessarily, because Snart does not get along (with anyone)”. Sarah Wayne Callies added “I think Sara Tancredi in the zombie apocalypse would not necessarily last too long,” referencing her role on The Walking Dead.
  • Dominic Purcell took this opportunity to thank his girlfriend, co-stars and all those who supported him through the accident that occurred on set, thanking them for the time he was given to heal and recuperate. Purcell was injured when a heavy metal piece fell from the set, where he was incredibly lucky to escape with no permanent injuries. Wentworth expressed his worry after hearing about the accident, “It was very upsetting, of course. The man is my brother, in every way but blood.”

  • The hospital where this season will be set is owned by Dean Munsch (Jamie Lee Curtis), who “parlays her fame as an icon of a new movement called new-new feminisim and subsequent book tour… into purchasing a hospital. It’s unclear what her reasoning is.”
  • The hospital is also a former asylum, but it has been confirmed that it is not the same asylum from season 1.
  • The Chanel’s will not be so glamourous this season as they are broke but are desperate to hold on to their style.

  • Also, this is what Brennan had to say about the new season “I think its bloodier and funnier… I feel like we are leaning into the creepiness a little more and the comedy a little more.”

Although they were not at the panel this year, there is no need to worry as Glenn Powell’s womaniser Chad Radwell and Niecy Nash’s hilarious Denise will be returning for season 2.

Lucifer Morningstar (Tom Ellis) Photo: Fox

Lucifer Morningstar: The Lord of Hell

Played by Tom Ellis, Lucifer (formerly known as Samael) bored with his life and abdicates his throne and becomes a consultant for the L.A.P.D whilst running his night club Lux. Lucifer has many powers including a supernatural awareness of any person’s hidden desires and can compel them to speak the truth. Lucifer enjoy’s using theses abilities to expose sinners in public, when he Lucifer speaks of his identity, but he is never believed and it gets brushed off.

Powers and Abilities:

  • High-Tier Angelic Physiology – As an angle, Lucifer is very powerful. Considering the fact that Lucifer is one of the strongest angels, his powers far outclass that of Amenadiel or Uriel, and is on par with Michael (when he possesses his wings). Without his wings, Lucifer’s powers are seemingly greatly reduced.
  • Supernatural Strength – Lucifer is capable of displaying superhuman physical strength, notably able to send a large man flying 30 feet through a glass wall with a mere push. Being an upper tier angel he is able to easily overpower angels like Amenadiel even after Lucifer lost his wings.
  • Supernatural Stamina – Lucifer often proclaims to have tremendous stamina.
  • Supernatural Durability – Lucifer is able to take immense amounts of physical damage, yet he doesn’t suffer any injuries or pain.
  • Supernatural Reflexes – Lucifer possesses great reflexes, as we have seen time and time again. Especially when he caught a knife Maze had thrown at him.
  • Desire Exhibition – Lucifer’s mere presence lowers the inhibitions of everyone around him, inducing them to reveal their true nature, their darkest secrets and desires. This allows him to make Faustian deals with various people in exchange for favors.
  • Temptation Inducement – Lucifer, being highly sexual, can easily make himself carnally irresistible to most human women and sometimes men, which he uses to his advantage. However there is a select few, including Chloe Decker who seem to be resistant to his power.
  • Telekinesis – Lucifer is able to levitate and spin a coin using his mind.
  • Chronokinesis – Lucifer is able to remain active when time is slowed down, this usually happens when Amenadiel would visit Earth.
  • Shape-shifting – Lucifer is capable of altering his true angelic appearance, making himself look either a dashingly handsome young human male, or a fearsome demon with red skin and blazing red eyes. He can also just alter the color of his eyes, and make only a select few people see his demonic form (while others still see him as a handsome human male). We assume Amenadiel sees Lucifer’s true angelic appearance even when Lucifer is in human form.
  • Teleportation – Lucifer was able to appear in a house, right after Chole had locked him inside her car.
  • Immortality – (This is only so, if Chole Decker is not near him). As an angel, Lucifer cannot be killed, however his Immortality is temporarily affected if he is in the vicinity of Chloe Decker.  To test his theory, Lucifer tried to cut himself with a knife in the presence of Maze, but was shown to be invulnerable, However when he tried the same test in the presence of Chloe with the same knife, he bled,  revealing his immortality and protections are greatly lowered in Chloe’s presence.
  • Night-Omniscience – Lucifer possesses an infinite amount of knowledge, and is remarkably well spoken and sophisticated, as a result. However, he notably has a poor understanding of human children, due to his general dislike of them.

Former Powers:

  • Flight – As Samael, Lucifer was once capable of utilizing his immense, angelic wings for flight. After leaving Hell, he had Mazikeen cut them off, he later burned them to prevent them from ever being reattached or stolen again.

Weakness:

  • Chloe Decker – The reason why is currently unknown at this stage, she is insensitive to Lucifer’s power and charm and she is able to render him powerless and defenseless against all means of harming.
  • Demonic Blades Forged in Hell – While its is most likely not possible to kill him with demon weapons, Lucifer did confirm that they “prick”.
  • Angels – Amenadiel was able to physically harm Lucifer even though he was far out of reach of Chloe. However, considering Lucifer’s evaluated position in the angelic hierarchy, normal angels like Amenadiel can hurt Lucifer to a limited or very limited extent. Its possible if Lucifer still had his wings, Amenadiel and the other regular angels wouldn’t be able to harm him at all.

Chloe Decker also has her own ability as it seems she is the only one that can physically hurt Lucifer.

Abilities:

  • Marksmanship – Chloe has outstanding aim and can handle a weapon like nobody’s business.
  • Mystical Immunity – Chloe is somehow immune to Lucifer’s powers of coercion when used towards her, much to his surprise. She is still affected by Lucifer’s  other powers, such as Chronokinesis.

But he was brought back from the dead by Amenadiel to kill Lucifer. Melcolm was killed by Chloe Decker in the season finale after a series of murders Melcolm had committed.

Charlotte – Mother of Angles (Tricia Helfer) Photo: Fox

Charlotte: Mother of Angles

Played by Tricia Helfer, Charlotte is God’s ex-wife and mother of Lucifer and Amenadiel, she has been trapped in Hell for thousands of years but has recently escaped and Lucifer is tasked with re-capturing her. Once reunited with Lucifer it becomes apparent that he in fact takes after his mother, however mother doesn’t share the same intrigue that Lucifer does when it comes to humanity.

Powers

We are yet to learn what Charlotte is capable of, no doubt she’s a force to be reckoned with.

Ella Lopez  (Aimee Garcia) Photo: Fox

Ella Lopez:

Played by Aimee Garcia, Ella is a forensic scientist at the L.A.P.D and is somewhat of a walking contradiction as she hails from a strong catholic family but is a scientist. Ella grew up under the watchful and protective eye of five brother in a rough neighborhood in Detroit. Lucifer finds Ella’s mutual belief in both faith and science extremely intriguing as do her colleagues at the department who will get to love her quirky ways.

Powers

We are still yet to learn what Ella can do and how well she can do it.

It Is Time For Fox Characters To Fight In An Animation Throwdown!

image

One of my old favorite blocks is coming back as a game. Get ready for Animation Throwdown a game combining some of the funniest shows into one epic card game.

In a similar vein to the Hearthstone series it is up to you to create a deck. A deck stuffed to the gills with characters from shows like Klaus from American Dad to Louise Belcher of Bob’s Burgers. With characters from all of Fox’s shows such as Futurama, Family Guy and King of the Hill, expect zaniness on a whole nother level.

At this moment we don’t have much information but that’s okay. From this image at least we know so many hilarious characters will be duking it out shortly. All we know for sure is that this game will be appearing in Q3 of this year.

I look forward to learning more and I hope you do to! As usual feel free to tweet me @Starkwyvrngamer!

Aimee Garcia Joins Lucifer In Season 2

Fox has announced another new character Ella Lopez to join the cast of Lucifer, the comic-book themed series for Season 2.

Amiee Garcia will join the cast as a regular for Season 2 and will play Ella Lopez, the L.A.P.D’s new forensic scientist who grew up in rough neighborhood in Detroit, and is from a strong Catholic family with five protective brothers. Lucifer finds Ella’s beliefs in both faith and science intriguing. Garcia is known for TV roles such as Veronica Palmer on the ABC sitcom George Lopez, Yvonne Sanchez on CBS period drama Vegas and Jamie Batista on the Showtime drama Dexter and Dr. Jae Kim in MGM’s reboot film RoboCop.

Garcia’s hiring comes on the heels of news that Tricia Helfer will play Lucifer’s mother Charlotte. Season 2 of Lucifer is set to air September 19 and I for one cannot wait.

The Devil’s Mom Is Revealed

wp-1466568527475.jpg

One of the big questions going into Season 2 of Lucifer is, who is the Mother of the devil? And the second big question is who is going to play the mother of our handsome devil Lucifer? There has been much debate across several forums as to who is the mother of lucifer but ultimately Lilith seemed to be the front-runner for Mother dearest, also in debate was who would be cast as mother dearest. Well I can now answer those two big questions!

Today the two big questions were answered and it is revealed that Tricia Helfer has been cast as mother who in the finale of season 1 was portrayed as a force to be reckoned with. Helfer recur on season 2 as Charlotte in what is expected to be the seasons main plot. Charlotte, God’s ex wife has been trapped in Hell for thousands of years, untill now. The mother of angles is now free and on earth, Charlotte is fearless and has a strong conviction for who she is and what she deserves, it is clear that Lucifer takes after his mother but the pair do not share the same opinion when it comes to humanity.

Humanity repels Charlotte and much to her disgust she will be trapped in a human body whilst she is on earth. Lucifer is eager to find out why mommy dearest is up to, however Charlotte claims that all she wants is to spend time with her boys Lucifer and Amenadiel, but can we really trust that’s all the handsome devils mom is on Earth for? I think not!

So who is Tricia Helfer you ask? Well she is a Canadian model and actress, who is best known for playing the human Cylon Number Six in Ronald D. Moore’s re-imagined Battlestar Galactica TV series from 2004-2009 and for voicing Sarah Kerrigan, the Queen of Blades, in the starcraft 2 trilogy, she was also a recurring guest star in Two and a Half men.
