Batman Vs. Superman: Ultimate Edition – An Ultimate Review

wonder-woman-movie-2017-gal-gadot-images.jpg

I’m going to go out on a limb and say that I really enjoyed the theatrical release of Batman vs Superman. I’ll go further out on that limb and say that it’s one of the best comic book movies so far. And sure you can go on and say how it’s inferior to Marvel movies and so on and so forth, but the only thing I will comment on the whole Marvel vs. DC thing is this. Marvel is doing action movies based on comic book characters while DC with BvS did an actual comic book movie.

So they are two very different animals and I’m not going to say that one is better than the other. Although I did enjoy the actual comic book movie than the ones that have been based on comic book characters. To support my point I would like someone to name a story arc or even a single issue of a Marvel comic that has been used in the MCU, and Civil War doesn’t count because they only used the name of that story arc. While DC used at least by my count 4 different comic book story arcs in one movie, and almost a direct comic panel to screen transition.

Now on to the Ultimate Edition of BvS. This cut of the movie made a good movie into a better movie. Most of the additional scenes added a lot to defining character motives and to strengthening the plot as well. You can take the UE version of this film and edit it down to a 2 1/2 maybe even a 2 hour and 45 minute run time and keep the relevant scenes that would have made the movie more coherent and also maintain the PG-13 rating.

So whoever did the editing on the theatrical release needs to be fired if they had all this good material to work with and yet still ended up releasing an unevenly paced movie. Another head scratcher is the R rating the UE receives. The only thing I noticed was that in the action sequences that involved guns you could see blood spurt out of the bodies and Wally, the guy who loses his legs in the battle of Metropolis, uses the F word when he finds Lex in his apartment. The added “gore” of the gun battles and the F word could be easily edited out and presto you retain your PG-13 rating.

Although in the new X-Men movies they’ve so far used the one free F bomb a PG-13 movie is allotted and Wolverine’s battle scenes have been pretty bloody as well and yet they get a PG-13 tag. I think this can be blamed on trying to ride the coat tails of Deadpool. When Deadpool blew the roof and expectations on what a success an R rated comic book movie can be there were several moves made to try to make comic book movies look even more edgy by slapping an R rating on them. The next and possibly last, with Hugh Jackman at least, Wolverine movie is reportedly going to be rated R. And the UE cut of BvS was announced around that time with, shocker, an R rating as well.

Aside from the added “gore” and “language” the UE gives you a bigger and clearer picture of the going ons of the major players, especially Lex Luthor. The theatrical release just tells you that Lex is behind everything because he pretty much says so towards the end of the movie when he’s pitting Superman against Batman and also you have to assume that he’s behind everything because it’s Lex Luthor. The UE shows you just how much Lex was pulling the strings to turn the public and Batmans opinion against Superman. It even hints at the possibility that the reason he was able to do all this is because he was possessed by another villain.

Unless my eyes deceived me there is a scene where he’s examining Zod’s body and his eyes go completely black. It could be that something or someone was pulling Lex’s strings as well to get rid of the man of steel. Which would also explain his slow descent into madness as the movie progresses until he’s ding dinging in a jail cell. But also the physical and mental abuse he suffered as a child by his father didn’t help his psyche either.

You also get a clear definition as to why Clark has such a hard on for Batman. The theatrical release just jumped from Superman doing super stuff to Clark having an argument with Perry about the Batman being a menace. You get to see Clark actually doing his job, which I got to say I enjoy seeing him do some investigative journalism just as much as I like to see him flying in his cape. And by doing his job of being a reporter, because really in the theatrical release you got the feeling that he never does his job since Perry is always hounding him for not doing his articles, he finds out how Batman has been terrorizing criminals. Although there is one scene that I found a little too on the nose when Clark talks to the girlfriend of the dead gangbanger that Batman branded. She tells Clark that words don’t work on someone who brands people, only fists do. I don’t think you can even call that foreshadowing. She might as well have said that Superman needs to fight Batman so justice can prevail because you know the movie is called Batman Vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice, in case you had forgotten.

Overall the portrayals of Clark as well as Superman are handled better in the UE. I know there are complaints that Superman isn’t a beacon of hope like in the comics or the Reeve’s movies. The UE doesn’t fully convey that version of Superman but it does brighten him up a little bit more than the theatrical release.

I do wish there was more Wonder Woman in the UE because she was just awesome and they could not have gone wrong with adding more Diana Prince. The one added scene for Batman that I thought was awesome was a small clip they show of Batman breaking into Lexcorp to steal the Kryptonite. If you’ve played any of the Arkham video games you’ll recognize the swoop down move he does to capture one of Lexcorp’s security guards. I wish they had shown the break in when it was happening, at least like the swoop down clip where they could showcase a couple of stealth moves or takedowns.

There are several scenes that they could have done away with completely. For all the secrecy surrounding Jena Malone’s role her scenes don’t amount to much in terms of plot or character development. Maybe that’s why they were keeping her so under wraps. Other throwaway scenes involve Alfred chopping wood and carry it back to the modern house by the lake for no apparent reason but show that this Alfred can hold his own because he’s chopping wood in an Ascot. And you also get a gratuitous butt shot of Ben Affleck when he’s getting ready for the gala event at Lex’s house. Again for no apparent reason but to show that Ben Affleck is physically capable of filling out the bat suit, maybe. I don’t know. But trust me, after going through Joel Schumacher’s bat suit nipples, this scene isn’t that shocking.

The Ultimate Edition takes a flawed movie and smooths out most of the rough edges. If you enjoyed the theatrical release like I did, it makes you appreciate it even more and it rewards you with a few more comic book references. Which I have to say is a real treat when you’ve spent many years reading comic books and a movie comes along and not just gives a nod to the source material but actually lifts plot points or lines from the comic stories you have read. If you disliked the theatrical release the UE might change your mind about it but only mildly. I do say give it a watch if only to give you more ammo for your pointless arguments of how bad the movie is. The theatrical release of BvS was a flawed exercise in doing a faithful comic book movie. The Ultimate Edition shows us what could have been if someone at Warner Bros. actually knew how to edit a movie.

Marvel-ous TV at SDCC

Marvel TV will be kicking off their panels with a marvellous signing event at the Marvel Booth #2329 on Thursday July 21, beginning with the Marvel/Netflix joint effort Marvel’s Luke Cage at 3:15 pm.  The executive producers Cheo Hodari Coker and Jeph Loeb will be joined by cast members Mike Colter (Luke Cage), Alfre Woodard (Mariah Dillard), Mahershala Ali (Cornell Stokes), Theo Rossi (Alvarez), Frank Whaley (Detective Scarfe) and Simone Missick (Misty Knight). Angouri Rice Added to Cast of “Spider-Man: Homecoming”

It feels like only yesterday that we filled you in on three more cast members joining on for Spider-Man: Homecoming, but already we’ve been given further news of someone else signing on for the movie.

 angourie-rice

Angouri Rice (The Nice Guys, These Final Hours, Nowhere Boys: The Book of Shadows) is the most recent addition to the cast of Spiderman: Homecoming.  The Australian actress recently had her break-out role in The Nice Guys, starring opposite Ryan Gosling (The Notebook, Drive, The Big Short) and Russell Crowe (Les Miserables, Gladiator, A Beautiful Mind).

Like virtually every other cast member, there’s no confirmation on who Rice will be playing.  Marvel and Sony have yet to comment on her addition to the line up.

Gwen-Clone-1

This may be incredibly speculative, but I feel like she might be Gwen Stacy. Whilst Sony and Marvel have indeed confirmed that there will be no love interest in this movie, and that Zendaya (Shake it Up!, K.C. Undercover, Zapped) is the leading lady, the casting of a small blonde girl has made me wonder if they will be re-introducing Gwen Stacy into this universe, and if so, what path will she take in this installment?

However, we will never truly know what Marvel and Sony have in store – she could be the Green Goblin for all we actually know. So for now, we will sit and wait.

Spiderman: Homecoming is filming now in preparation for a release on July 7th, 2017.

MORE Casting News for “Spider-Man: Homecoming”

shc

At this point, the world could collectively play a game where we throw some names in a hat, pull it out, and chances are they are in this movie.

Following casting news from last week, a further three actresses have been added to the cast line up.

Garcelle Beauvais

Garcelle Beauvais (The Jamie Foxx Show, NYPD Blue, Grimm) has officially signed on for the Marvel blockbuster, as has 17 year old Tiffany Espenden (Bucket & Skinner’s Epic Adventures, Earth to Echo, Phineas and Ferb).

 TiffanyEspenden

Alongside these two, six time Emmy Award winner Tyne Daly (Cagney & Lacey, The Enforcer, Judging Amy) has also added her name to the list of impressive actors joining on for Spider-Man: Homecoming.

TyneDaly

Marvel and Sony have yet to comment on their roles – they seem to be keeping an extremely tight lid on who’s who in next summers Marvel and Sony production, as the only official roles are Tom Holland (Billy Elliot The Musical, Captain America: Civil War) as the famous web-slinger, Marisa Tomei (The Wrestler, Rescue Me, Empire) as Aunt May, and Zendaya (Shake It Up!, K.C. Undercover) as leading girl Michelle. Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man, The Judge, Sherlock Holmes) will be making a cameo as Tony Stark/Iron Man.

Otherwise, the rest of the cast are all rumours, be them strong or weak ones. However, it is very clear that Marvel and Sony want to re-introduce Peter Parker with a bang, and seal his place once and for all in the MCU.

Spiderman: Homecoming is currently filming, and is scheduled for release on July 7th, 2017. However, if you just can’t wait that long, you can catch Holland making his debut in Captain America: Civil War.

Sony Pictures Announce New Ghostbusters Cartoon ‘Ecto Force’

hqdefault1

Ghostbusters will be getting a new cartoon series in 2018, Sony Pictures revealed recently. The cartoon will be produced by Sony Pictures Animation in collaboration with director Ivan Reitman’s new Ghostbusters film company Ghost Corps. The cartoon series will feature a future setting, so won’t feature the Ghostbusters from the upcoming reboot.

Sony released an official synopsis for the animated TV show:

A brand new animated television series, Ghostbusters: Ecto Force, will further expand the Ghostbusters cinematic universe and focus on a new generation of Ghostbusters in the year 2050 who capture ghosts around the world with help from local teams—and some very cool gear!

Of course, this isn’t the first time Ghostbusters has had a cartoon series without the film Ghostbusters. The 1997 animation series Extreme Ghostbusters only featured one of the movie Ghostbusters (Egon Spengler); the rest were new characters: sarcastic slacker Eduardo Rivera (Rino Romano), mechanic Roland Jackson (Alfonso Ribiero), extreme sports fan Garrett Miller (Jason Marsden) and goth Kylie Griffin (Tara Charendoff).

That said, the original Ghostbusters still had a cartoon featuring the Ghostbusters from the film before they decided to introduce a new team. 1991’s The Real Ghostbusters featured Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz, Egon Spengler and Winston Zeddemore as the main characters, albeit without the live-action actors voicing their cartoon counterparts. Instead, David Coulier was the main voice of Peter Venkman (Lorenzo Music previously voiced him for the first two seasons), Maurice LaMarche voiced Egon Spengler (later reprising the role for Extreme Ghostbusters), Frank Welker was cast as both Ray Stantz and Slimer and Winston Zeddemore was voiced by Arensio Hall for three seasons before Buster Jones took over from season four.

It is therefore a curious decision to make a Ghostbusters cartoon with a new team before the current crew get one of their own. The original idea for the 1984 Ghostbusters had a future setting so maybe Ivan Reitman feels now is the right time to explore a futuristic Ghostbusters?

There are also plans for a Ghostbusters shared universe similar to the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) so it is possible this new team will operate similar to how Agents of SHIELD works as a television counterpart to the Marvel films. Maybe we’ll see some of the ghosts from the 2016 movie cross over to Ecto-Force? Maybe we might even get a live-action adaptation some point down the line that would allow the future team to meet the 2016 Ghostbusters via a time travel mechanic?

An interesting concept in the synopsis is the idea of the future team battling ghosts from around the world. It seems like we can expect the future Ghostbusters to do some globe-trotting, so could we see ghosts haunting London or the Australian Outback? The Ghostbusters taking on the ghost of Winston Churchill would be suitably barmy for what will likely be an eccentric kids’ television show.

Let’s not get ahead of ourselves though. The 2016 Ghostbusters reboot still has to be a success for the Ecto-Force cartoon to actually happen. Whilst it has been officially announced by Sony, if the Ghostbusters film flops then I expect Ecto-Force will be cancelled before it has even had a chance to air. Let’s hope the answer to the question ‘Who ya gonna call?’ will be ‘Melissa McCarthy‘ from the cinema-going public and not ‘someone else’.

‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ Announces Further Casting And A Potential CARNAGE!

HomecomingLogo

Spider-Man: Homecoming has announced further casting, including Donald Glover (Community, The Martian, Magic Mike XXL), Hannibal Buress (30 Rock, Bad Neighbours, The Secret Life of Pets) and Michael Mando (Better Call Saul, Orphan Black).

Other cast members include Bokeem Woodbine (Fargo, Ray, Total Recall), Martin Starr (Knocked Up, Adventureland, This is the End) and Logan Marshall-Green (Prometheus, Devil, The O.C.).

HomecomingCast_DonaldGloverMilesMorales

Donald Glover’s role has yet to be revealed, though fans are incredibly excited as he’s been a popular internet favourite for a Spider-Man role, and many have fancast him as the Ultimate Universe Spider-Man, Miles Morales. Glover voiced Morales in the Disney animated series Ultimate Spider-Man, prompting speculators to wonder if his role will involve a Miles Morales Easter Egg.

HomecomingCast_HannibalBuress

Hannibal Buress is mostly known for his stand-up comedy, but has recently turned his career to more acting roles. His most recent role is as the voice of Buddy in the recently released animated movie The Secret Life of Pets. Marvel and Sony have not commented on what his role will entail.

HomecomingCast_MichaelMandoCarnage

Michael Mando, who played Nacho Varga in Breaking Bad spin-off show Better Call Saul,
has potentially the most exciting rumour around his character, as he is strongly rumoured to be playing Cletus Kasady, aka. Carnage.

HomecomingCast_CletusKasady

Cletus Kasady was first introduced in The Amazing Spider-Man #344, and then made his debut as Carnage in issue #361. While his abilities are based off of the other highly popular symbiotic villain Venom, Carnage has absolutely no morals, and is a completely deranged character. However, it would be odd to throw in Carnage without Venom, let alone in Spider-Man’s introduction (not origin.) story. I imagine at this stage they’d introduce Mando playing Kasady, and give us a glimpse into what he’ll become.

HomecomingCast_BokeemWoodbine

Bokeem Woodbine and Logan Marshall-Green haven’t had their definite confirmed, however, Sony and Marvel have let us know that they will be playing villain roles. This brings our tally of villains for this movie to four, with Michael Keaton to join as The Vulture.

HomecomingCast_LoganMarshall-Green

Martin Starr has also been confirmed for the cast, and judging by released set photos, will be playing one of the teachers at Peter Parker’s high school.

HomecomingCast_MartinStarr

Overall, the cast line-up and the sheer amount of massive names being dropped for  Marvel’s summer 2017 blockbuster show that Marvel and Sony aren’t here for a one-off drop – they’re here for the long haul, intending to make their take on the Spider-Man franchise one massive universe of it’s own, just as Sony intended to do with The Amazing Spider-Man franchise starring Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is currently filming, and is scheduled for a release July 7th 2017. The movie will be starring Tom Holland as the lead web-slinger following his debut in Captain America: Civil War.

Sharon Stone Confirmed for “Wee” Marvel Movie Role

Sharon Stone (Basic Instinct, Total Recall) has been confirmed for a role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

SharonStone

According to an interview for AARP Magazine, Sharon Stone has confirmed that she has a “minor role” in an MCU movie. She hasn’t revealed much, simply that it will definitely be a superhero and that they have “heat powers.”

Stone had already spoken about this before, on the chat show The Late Late Show with James Corden (where she also got mighty close to longtime fan Sebastian Stan (Captain America: The First Avenger, Political Animals, Once Upon a Time);

“I’m just doing a wee part in a Marvel movie, upcoming, and I can’t tell, because you know, you have to sign confidentiality agreements. But I’m going to do a wee part in a Marvel movie now. That’s it.”

Marvel fans are now speculating on who she could possibly be in the realm of female superheros, and plenty are landing on the theory that she will be Janet Van Dyne – former wife to Hank Pym and mother to Hope in the MCU’s installment of Ant-Man.

In the movie, it’s revealed that Janet sacrificed herself by going sub-atomic as The Wasp, presumably fading away as she shrinks forever. However, given that Scott Lang was able to come back from going sub-atomic, it wouldn’t be a stretch to suggest Janet could have managed the same thing. We never saw her face in the movie either, so it’s left the MCU a lot of room to play with that.

SharonWasp

It also makes sense because whilst Janet doesn’t have “heat powers”, she does use stinger weapons – which could be perceived as a type of heat.

However, there are plenty of other superheroes in the Marvel universe with heat abilities, male and female, and movies are very adaptable. Not to say she’ll shout “FLAME ON” and shoot up into the sky in her part, but there are other options – for example, Gaea, who would be a fitting role in Thor: Ragnarok. She’s an incredibly powerful God with multiple, powerful abilities – and top it off with her very odd connection to Thor, it could make for an interesting character addition.

SharonGaea

However, Marvel are keeping a very tight lid on this, and also appear to have Stone under lock and key. So for now, the internet continues to speculate, until the faithful day that they officially release word, or until someone else who knows at Marvel accidentally lets it slip. We’ll keep you updated…

Leaked ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ Details Emerge

rsz_ragnarok

So this morning I have found out that 3 unique bits of information have been leaked surrounding the new ‘Thor – Ragnarok’ movie which is also set to feature the return of Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk. It appears that the story arc will also be absorbing some of the Planet Hulk story line and I for one am very pleased about this as I love reading that story arc. So here’s what we found out from from the leaked information from Joblo.

1) We will see some sort of link to the Planet Hulk story arc that ran in comic book form back in 2006 where the ‘Illuminati’ decided that The Hulk was to dangerous to stay on Earth and tricked him into boarding a space craft before being launched into space. They had decided to send him to a peaceful planet in order to live out his remaining days but the ship was diverted and The Hulk ended up crashing landing on Warworld.

rsz_planet-hulk-2010-1-why-a-live-action-planet-hulk-movie-would-be-great-for-marvel-studios-jpeg-60218

Kevin Feige has always insisted that it would not be a bright idea to do a Planet Hulk movie for some strange reason as I for one would love to have seen it he also had this to say on the matter last year when speaking to IGN.

“I think what’s cool about the Planet Hulk story is it’s all Hulk. He’s a gladiator, he’s fighting all these creatures on another world. Yes, some of those creatures show up in [Guardians of the Galaxy], which makes people think, ‘Oh, maybe it could exist.’ And maybe it could exist, someday. I don’t think that’s the first place we would go though for the very reason that you stated, which is, if we were ever able to do a standalone Hulk movie, 60 percent of the fun would be seeing Mark Ruffalo leading a Marvel movie — and that’s what we would do if we ever went down that road.”

In the Planet Hulk story line we see The Hulk become a Gladiator fighting all kinds of creatures from all kinds of different places but the most noticeable person he fights is the Silver Surfer. We also know that Jeff Goldblum is set to play The Grandmaster  in this movie who is a villain who enjoys pitting superheroes against each other so this also adds fuel to the story we will see bits of the Planet Hulk story arc. Joblo have also said that we will even see The Hulk appear in his iconic gladiator armor from the comic books.

rsz_leaked-plot-details-for-thor-ragnarok-including-one-incredible-arc-the-hulk-eventua-998123

2) According to Joblo we also know that Thor is also searching for the ultimate weapon to reset the universe and that his quest will initially see Thor fighting and then teaming up with The Hulk. We are not 100% sure what the weapon will be but they seem to think it may be the Time Gem which will link Thor: Ragnarok to the Infinity Gems plot line that is building up in the Avengers movies. Having possession of this Gem will litteraly allow Thor to control time and reset the universe.

rsz_will-thor-3-ragnarok-set-the-stage-for-avengers-infinity-war-the-infinity-stones-and-w-919853

3) We can also expect to see some majorly dramatic changes in this film according to Joblo’s more random spoilers:

“And speaking of appearances, expect a major change in the look of The God of Thunder himself for this part of the film as he will be sporting a shaved head (but not completely bald) for at least a portion of the film. Also, expect a very different look for Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie, who is traditionally a blonde-haired warrior type in the comics. For Ragnarok she’ll be wearing war paint on her face, much like a Native American warrior, which should be an interesting take on this variation of the character.”

rsz_tessa-thompson-valkyrie

So there we go I cannot wait for more information on this story line and if these rumors come true this film could be up there with the best in the MCU universe.

Disney Star ‘Zendaya’ Joins Sony’s Rebooted ‘Spider-Man’

Zendaya

Over the years various incarnations of Spider-Man have had the pleasure of locking-lips with some of Hollywoods elite babes – Kristen Dunst, Bryce Dallas Howard, Emma Stone – to name but a few.

Not bad for Marvel’s self-confess Geek.

Well now Peter Parker can add Disney Starlet, model and singer Zendaya to the list, as sources out of Deadline report that the triple-threat actress is to appear alongside Tom Holland’s Spider-Man in Sony’s third reboot of the Mega-popular Web-Headed-Hero.

Details are sketchy as to who Zendaya will play but Deadline did indicate that her character will be called “Michelle“. The name will lead many comic-book fans to predict that the actress will embody the character of Michele Gonzales. The Muay Thai, Tae Bo kickboxing, shotgun wielding criminal defence lawyer and former-flamer of Peter Paker who made her comic book debut in The Amazing Spider-Man #592.

Sony’s reboot will be Hollands first solo Spider-Man movie after the British actor makes his first appearance in the role alongside Chris Evan’s in Captain America: Civil War. The Jon Watts directed film will also mark the first time a Spider-Man franchise will fall under the banner of Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe after both studios agreed to share the character after the commercial flop of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014).

Watts and Sony will shoot the new Spider-Man film this year with a projected release of July 7, 2017. Before then fans will be able to get their first look at Tom Holland when Captain America: Civil War opens in theatres April 29 this year.

‘Captain America: Civil War’ New Details Emerge

Captain-America-Civil-War-Teams

Captain America: Civil War will have major repercussions for the cinematic universe with many speculating that Cap (Chris Evans) himself may meet his end. Certainly if Crossbones has anything to say about it.

In Empire’s upcoming issue, fans will get an official glance at the HYDRA bad-guy whose known to comic-book fans as the villain who killed Captain America in the 2007 arc The Death of Captain America.

Captain-Aem-3

Fans will be familiar with the man-behind-the-mask as Captain America: The Winter Solider (2014) actor Frank Grillo, whose Brock Rumlow returns to get some sweet revenge against our straight-laced superhero.

The returns don’t stop there however with TheWrap revealing that fan-favourite Pepper Potts will return in a “small yet key” role in the film, once again played by Academy Award winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow. Pepper was last seen in Iron Man 3 (2013) with Extremis-enthused powers that proved helpful in kicking Guy Pearce’s Aldrich Killian’s ass.

Empire also finally revealed Martin Freeman’s role in the upcoming superhero-mash up as Everett Ross a supporter of debuting Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman). With Potts proving to be a formidable businesswomen, its likely that the two could face off on screen as Marvel traverse the political landscape within the MCU as the American government legislate for Superhero Registration.

With Captain America: Civil War hitting theatres on May 6, 2016. We will have to wait and see how the Marvel landscape will change coming out of the movie.
