Perry has just dropped a new single ‘Rise‘ on the 14th July 2016, however it is a standalone single. Its been three years since we last had music from Perry with her album ‘Prism‘. The new single has been released in the wake of the Rio Olympics and is definitely an anthem for the athletes. In an interview about ‘Rise‘, Perry stated that the track is “a song that has been brewing inside me for years, that has finally come to the surface”, she wanted to release Rise as a standalone track instead of including it on an album because now more than ever, there is a need for our world to unite” she also added:

“I can’t think of a better example than the Olympic athletes, as they gather in Rio with their strength and fearlessness, to remind us how we ALL can come together, with the resolve to be the best we can be. I hope this song can inspire us to heal, unite and rise together. I am honored that NBC Olympics has chosen to use ‘Rise’ as an anthem before and during the Rio Games“

The single has been released for streaming on Apple Music and for download on iTunes, if you like me have Android then you will have to listen to it via YouTube. The single is uplifting with a huge chorus, it’s about victory and rising above opponents. It’s not bad but it is yet to grow on me, see for yourself below.

Fresh Friday Featuring Miccoli

Welcome back to this weeks Fresh Friday, this week’s feature is the very talented Miccoli! I stumbled upon this great band on twitter of all places and just instantly loved their sound. This week has an added extra as the band were kind enough to do a Q&A as well….. Lets find out more about Miccoli.

Miccoli are a British band that comprises of twin brothers Adriano Miccoli (vocal and acoustic/electric guitar) Alessandro Miccoli (piano, vocal, acoustic guitar and clarinet) and sister Francesca Miccoli (vocal, piano, and harmonica) and formed the band in 2006 in Birmingham England. Miccoli wrote, produced and recorded their own debut album “writing on rooves” and preformed some of the singles from their debut album at the O2 Wireless festival in 2006 and the following year played to a packed crowd at the Glee Club in Birmingham.

The music video for their single “Idle Stranger” was featured on VH1 and bliss TV in the UK in 2013, the music video also picked up a few awards including:

– Best Of Music Category – July Citizen TV 2013 – Took out 2nd

One of the bands recent singles is called ‘addiction‘ and I can tell you Miccoli are my new addiction! Not only are they exceptionally talented they also have a uniqueness that most bands today don’t have, they have the old school band sound with a modern twist and what I mean when I say old school sound is that like bands of old, you can hear every single instrument played in each of their songs. They have nailed the art of balance between music and vocals and it give you this beautiful eclectic yet nostalgic sound, which their singles – ‘Tell Me‘, ‘Undo‘ and ‘Devices‘ all feature. You need to treat your ears to Miccoli and I promise you once you hear their beautiful sound, you like me will be addicted! Below is the Q&A that Miccoli were kind enough to do for our readers.

When did you start singing and songwriting?

We were all involved in music from an early age playing in orchestras at school then bands when we left school, it was around that time when we came together and started writing songs at home as we all lived together an it kind of made sense plus organising rehearsals and song writing sessions were easy.

For our readers who have never heard your music can you explain your sound in five words.

Memorable melodies with haunting harmonies.

You write your own music; where do you draw inspiration from and what is your favorite part about the process?

It sounds cliché but we draw on our own experiences in life to write about, it can literally be anything that has affected us on an emotional level in same way or another. I’d say one of my favourite parts is getting to empty your head putting it down on paper or sealing it in a melody.
Who have you always dreamt of working with and why?

We are Big fans of Fleetwood Mac that would be our first choice, they inspired us a lot listening to them growing.

Share with us your proudest moment in your career so far?

Probably having our video played on Vh1/MTV not embarrassed to say we recorded the first airing and celebrated of course with a cup of tea…Obviously.

Who is your favorite artist and what is your favorite song right now?

That’s tricky as we mainly listen to music that’s not really current or from a different era, like Fleetwood Mac we mentioned earlier but other artists like Police, Sting and Simon and Garfunkel, we are just able to relate more to this on a personal and musical level too.

On This Day 14th July 2016 In Music History

Welcome back to this weeks edition of On This Day (OTD) if you have just joined us every Thursday Skatronixxx Music looks back on music history to discover what happened On This Day, each edition also has a OTD Spotify playlist of all the artists who feature. 1962

🎙 Bobby Vinton started a four-week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘Roses Are Red, My Love‘, the single was a No.15 hit in the UK.

🎙 The Beatles played their first ever gig in Wales when they appeared at The Regent Dansette in Rhyl. The tickets for the gig cost five shillings ($0.70).

1964

🎙 The Rolling Stones were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with ‘It’s All Over Now‘, the group’s first of 8 UK No.1’s. The single was written by Bobby Womack and Shirley Womack, it was the first released by The Valentinos featuring Bobby Womack in the same year.

1967

🎙 The Who began their first full North American tour at the Memorial Coliseum in Portland, Oregon, appearing as the support band to Herman’s Hermits on 55 dates.

🎙 David Bowie released the single ‘Love You Till Tuesday‘ which failed to reach the charts. Bowie’s 1969 showpiece film Love You till Tuesday took its name from the song, which also featured over the opening credits.

1971

🎙 The Byrds, James Taylor, Steeleye Span, Sandy Denny, Tom Paxton and The Incredible String Band all appeared at the “UK Lincoln Folk Festival.” Tickets cost £2.00.

1973

🎙 A drunk driver killed Clarence White of The Byrds while he was loading equipment after a gig in Palmdale, California.

🎙 During a concert at the John Wayne Theatre in Hollywood, California, Phil Everly smashed his guitar and stormed of stage, Don finished the set by himself and announced that The Everly Brothers had split.

1977

🎙 Elvis Costello and The Attractions made their live debut supporting Wayne County at The Garden in Penzance, Cornwall, England.

1979

🎙 Donna Summer scored her third No.1 US single with ‘Bad Girls‘ the album of the same name also started a five-week run at No.1. The inspiration for her to write the song came after one of her assistants was offended by a police officer who thought she was a street prostitute.

1980

🎙 Allen Klein ex manager of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones began serving a two-month prison sentence for falsifying tax returns.

🎙 Bryan Ferry collapsed in his hotel room in France and was flown to London suffering from a kidney infection.

1982

🎙 The movie premier for Pink Floyd’s “The Wall ” was held at The Empire in Leicester Square, London, England.

🎙 Van Halen kicked off their 105-date North American ‘Hide Your Sheep Tour‘ at Richmond County  Civic Center in Augusta, Georgia.

🎙 Phillippe Wayne lead singer with The Detroit Spinners died of a heart attack while performing at Ivey’s nightclub in Oakland, California, he was 43 years of age. The Detroit Spinners had the 1980 UK No.1 & US No.2 single ‘Working My Way Back To You.’

1986

🎙 Madonna was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with her second No.1 ‘Papa Don’t Preach.’ Madonna also had the UK No.1 album with ‘True Blue.’

1988

🎙 Michael Jackson gave himself a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for setting a new attendance record, when he played the first of seven nights at Wembley Stadium in London. The shows on his “Bad World Tour“ were attended by a total of 504,000 fans, beating the record previously held by Genesis, with four sold out nights.

1989

🎙 At “The Peach Festival” in South Carolina, 432 guitarist’s broke the world record for the most guitar players appearing in unison for the longest period of time, when they performed ‘Louie Louie‘ for 30 minutes.

🎙 Tom Jones lost a paternity suit and was ordered to pay $200 a week in child support to 27-year-old Katherine Berkery of New York. The judge in the case was Judge Judy Sheindlin who was still serving in her 15 year tenure as a New York Family Court judge before appearing in her court TV show, Judge Judy.

1997

🎙 Walkers Spice Girls crisps went on sale in the UK, over 16 million bags were sold by the end of the year.

2000

🎙 Five became the latest pop idols to call for the legalisation of cannabis. J and Richie from the band told Sky magazine that the drug should no longer be outlawed and said “No one who smokes a spliff goes out and starts fights like someone who’s been drinking.”

2003

🎙 Plans for Sting to write an official anthem for Tuscany came under fire by local who insisted the job should go to an Italian not a foreigner. The British pop star owned a house in Tuscany and had been nominated to compose the anthem by Franco Banchi who lived nearby.

2006

🎙 Primal Scream singer Bobby Gillespie had his nose broken when he was attacked in a hotel bar in Madrid in Spain. The singer had to postpone at Top Of The Pops recording due to injuries.

2007

🎙 A pair of glasses worn by former Beatle, John Lennon sparked a bidding war after being offered for sale online. The circular sunglasses were worn by Lennon during The Beatles 1966 tour of Japan, where the band played some of their last ever live dates. Anonymous rival bidders had pushed the price as high as £750,000 at an online auction house 991.com.

2009

🎙 Michael Jackson fans from all over the world congregated at London’s O2 arena, where the star had been due to begin his run of 50 concerts. Fans who left messages to a wall of tributes and conducted Jackson sing-a-longs, had a minute’s silence at 1830 BST to mark the time when the doors to the concert would have opened.

2015

🎙 Arthur Cave the 15-year-old son of musician Nick Cave died after a fall from a cliff in Brighton, Sussex, England.

🎙 The Las Vegas coroner’s office confirmed that B.B. King died of natural causes primarily stemming from Alzheimer’s disease and was not murdered. Two of his daughters had alleged King was poisoned by long-time associates.

The 2016 Vh1 Hip Hop Honors

After a six-year hiatus the once annual event Vh1 Hip Hop Honors are back! Now for those of you not familiar with the Vh1 Hip Hop honors, it is a TV special that honors old school and golden age hip hop rappers and contributors. Hip hop honors features live performances by most of the honorees along with new school artist who were influenced by them.

This year the honors were held on Monday 11th July 2016 live from David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center in New York City and was hosted by Grammy award-winning rapper Eve. This year’s Vh1 Hip Hop Honors theme is ‘All Hail the Queens‘ to pay homage to the female pioneers, trailblazers and the trend-setters who have paved the way for women to be heard in this male dominated genre. Being honored this year were Queen Latifah, Missy Elliott, Salt-N-Pepa feat. DJ Spinderella and Lil’ Kim.

Queen Latifah has been dominating this genre for decades and took out a Grammy for Best Solo Rap Performance in 1994.

Missy Elliott is the only female rapper to have achieved RIAA platinum certification on ALL of her albums, she is one of the most influential produces of all time.

Salt-N-Pepa feat. DJ Spinderella broke through in the ‘Golden Age of Hip Hop’ and become the first female rap group to attain platinum status.

Lil’ Kim the multi-platinum rapper and fashion icon broke records when her debut album ‘Hard Core’ spawned three consecutive #1 rap hits.

The First Lady Michelle Obama also made an appearance during this years honors via a pre-taped video, and had high praises for both Missy Elliott and Queen Latifah, she not only views them as icons but also as friends. She said “I’m so grateful to you for your passion and your contributions to our world, and I can’t wait to see everything you’ll continue to achieve in the years ahead.”  Michelle also went on to say “I’m so proud of the two of you because through your music and your activism-including your support of our Let Girls Learn initiatives you all are empowering young women around the world to believe in themselves and fulfill their boundless promise.”

I couldn’t think of any women more deserving than Queen Latifah, Missy Elliot, Salt-N-Pepa and Lil’ Kim to receive the Vh1 Hip Hop honors this year,  I grew up listening to all these women, not only have they done a lot for the music industry but have also done so much for young girls around the world. So congratulations ladies this is well deserved!

2016 The Worst So Far For U.S Record Industry

Although there has been many record released this year, however it seems no amount of awesome music will fix the music industry’s declining album sales. Billboard and Nielsen Music (formerly Nielsen SoundScan) have released some 2016 mid year sales data on the 6th July 2016 and so far it’s looking quite grim, 2016 is the worst year for overall album sales since Nielsen started to keep track of sales in 1991. Consumers have brought 100.3 million album units – this number includes, digital downloads, CDs and vinyl for the first half of 2016, down 13.6 percent compared to the same time period in 2015.

In the same six months, Listeners stream 208.9 billion songs or 139.2 million album units and according to RIAA and Billboard rules it’s a 58.7 percent increase. Hidden in that number is the boom in music-only streaming: 113.6 billion audio streams, compared to 58.6 billion in 2015. Video streaming like YouTube and Vevo saw a more modest growth: 95.3 billion streams, compared to 2015’s 76.6 billion. Unsurprisingly the report also stated that CD’s continue to decline, with only 40 million units moving in the first six months of 2016, which is a decline of 11.6 percent compared to the same time period last year. However the vinyl collector’s market is still growing, and is up 11.4 percent, but still remains far smaller in terms of actual records: 6.2 million copies sold in the first half of the year.

Looking at percentage, digital album sales are slipping faster than CDs – they are down 18.4 percent to 43.8 million. Only three albums have sold more than one million copies this year and the artist are really no surprise: Drake’s album – ‘Views‘ at 1.3 million album sales, Beyoncé’s Album – ‘Lemonade‘ at 1.2 million album sales and Adele’s Album – ‘25‘ at 1.4 million, the other big seller has been the late great David Bowie’s last album ‘Blackstar‘ is the best-selling vinyl record of the year, shifting 57,000 copies.

The most common place for consumers to purchase albums and songs were, unsurprisingly, at digital retailers, which captured 43.7 percent of the album market, which saw overall sales decline by 18.4 percent, to 43.8 million, but surprisingly “non-traditional” CD retailers, like Amazon and supermarkets, saw an 8.3 percent growth in sales. Streaming is the main culprit in the sales cull, particularly song sales, streaming is definitely booming. For the year, total album consumption which includes TEA, SEA and overall album units – totaled 279.9 million units in the first half of 2016, up 8.9 percent.

The billboard figures don’t really surprise me at all given the last time I physically brought a CD from Sanity or JB Hi-Fi  would have to at lest been 5 or more years ago, all my music is now purchased via Google Music and it’s just as competitive as JB Hi-Fi and other retailers if not cheaper most times, so it’s really not that surprising and I would suspect that physical CD sales will keep dropping as streaming albums becomes the new normal.

Sir Patrick Stewart…Country Singer?

When one hears the name Patrick Stewart, what is the first thought that comes to mind? X-Men, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Excalibur, or even Pagemaster? How about country music classic singer??? Hmm…. Yup I would never have thought this either, but here he is, singing country music. And not just any type of country music, old classics…. Um ok…

First off, what is it with the cast of Star Trek singing? I mean you have William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, and now Patrick Stewart. What is the link that causes these actors to be singers as well? Is there some unspoken or unknown covenant of the trekkies that states, “once you have filmed, you must sing”??? Well, whatever it is, it seems to be contagious because they have infected our beloved Patrick. And to unfortunately, he is singing country music. (I’m sorry to those who like this stuff, but for me… I just can’t handle it.)

                              

There is a pretty funny infomercial that advertises these musical workings of Sir Patrick Stewart, he sings songs such as El Paso, Rawhide, Buttons and Bows, and others… Plus he is wearing major cowboy-up clothing!! AAAHHHH… sorry freaked out for a moment. OK OK OK… back to reality.

I will admit, he has a really good voice, and when he is singing these songs (though I may not like the idea of it) he does deliver the essence that is the country classics. And I may also admit, that one of them might have stuck in my head for an annoying 24 hours, unfortunately. But I did enjoy watching the infomercial. I mean come on, this is Patrick Stewart, singing country western, dressed as a cowboy. How freaking adorable right?

I also had a giggle when they promoted the country Christmas CD as well. LOL!

                                      

They advertise that he duets with other country singers such as Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, and Sunny Ozell (who ever that is)…And guess what I did, I looked for these songs that he sings with the two ladies I do know, (Swift and Underwood) but found no songs. (but I did however find something about Sir Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen reciting Taylor Swift’s song Bad Blood, it was something on twitter so I am not sure what was going on. If you know please enlighten me!)

                                                 

OK all kidding aside, there is a website you can visit called PSTewSings.com where you can download 5 of the sample songs and all proceeds go to International Rescue Committee. So I guess he may have done this for fun and a good cause.

What did we learn from this? One: being on Star Trek means there is some singing career in there for you. Two: Sir Patrick Stewart looks cute in country clothing. Three, you don’t have to be from Texas to sing the classics… in fact anyone can sing country music, you don’t need talent for that ^_^  (just kidding)

Stu’s Track Of The Week 10/07/16

So it’s time for my track of the week and this weeks pick comes from punk band NOFX and there track Bob from the album White Trash, Two Heebs and a Bean released in 1992. The album was originally meant to be called White Trash, Two Kykes and a Spic to describe each of the band members but one of the bands Grandmas thought the title was offensive so they changed the name of the album for the release.

The song is about NOFX’s drummer, Erik (Smelly), who stopped drinking and got his hair cut after 15 years, the lyrics for the song are below.
