On This Day In Music History – September 15th, 2016

It’s Thursday and that can only mean two things, one it’s almost the weekend and two it’s time for another edition of On This Day! So let’s get cracking and find out what went down in Music History On This Day 15th Sept, 2016.

On This Day…

1956

🎙 Elvis Presley started a five-week run at No. 1 on the US charts with ‘Don’t Be Cruel.’ ‘Don’t Be Cruel’ went on to become Presley’s biggest selling single, with sales over sis million by 1961. This “double-sided hit” which had ‘Hound Dog‘ on the B side, became the most successful on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. One side reached No.1 on the chart, the other No.2. The two titles spent a combined 55 weeks in the Top 100 in 1956-1957.

1961

🎙 A group from Hawthorne, California called The Pendletones attend their first real recording session at Hite Morgan’s Studio in Los Angeles. The Band recorded ‘Surfin‘, a song that would help shape their career as The Beach Boys.

1962

🎙 The Four Seasons started a five-week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘Sherry‘, it made No.8 in the UK. They became the first American group to have three No.1’s in succession.

1964

🎙 The Beatles on tour in the USA, appeared at the Public Auditorium in Cleveland, Ohio. During the performance a group of fans managed to break through the line of police fronting the stage and were able to get up on-stage. Police ordered The Beatles off-stage in the middle of a song, and the concert only resumed after Derek Taylor got on the PA system and pleaded for order to be restored so that the rest of the performance would not be cancelled by the police.

1965

🎙 The Ford Motor Company became the first automaker to offer an 8-track tape player as an option for their entire line of vehicles on sale in the US. Tapes were initially only available at auto parts stores, as home 8-track equipment was still a year away.

1966

🎙 The Small Faces were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with ‘All Or Nothing‘, their only No.1 hit. According to Kay Marriott, Steve Marriott’s mother, Steve wrote the song about his spilt with ex-fiancee Sue Oliver, though first wife Jenny Rylance states that Marriott told her he wrote the song for her as a result of her split with Rod Stewart.

1967

🎙 Filming continued for The Beatles ‘Magical Mystery Tour.’ Lunch was at James and Amy Smedley’s Fish and Chip Shop in Taunton, Somerset with The Beatles being filmed and photographed eating their fish and chips.

1968

🎙 The Doors were forced to perform as a trio at a concert in Amsterdam after singer Jim Morrison collapsed while dancing during the Jefferson Airplane’s performance.

1970

🎙 US Vice-President Spiro Agnew said in a speech that the youth of American were being “brainwashed into a drug culture” by rock music, movies, books and underground newspapers.

1975

🎙 Pink Floyd released their ninth studio album Wish You Were Here in the UK. The album which explores themes of absence, the music business, and former band-mate Syd Barrett’s mental decline peaked at No.1 on both sides of the Atlantic and went on to spend a total of 84 weeks on the chart.

1978

🎙 Bob Dylan kicked off his longest and most continuous US tour of his career in Augusta, Maine, playing the first of sixty-five gigs in sixty-two cities.

1979

🎙 Led Zeppelin scored their sixth US No.1 album when ‘In Through The Out Door‘ started a seven-week run at the top of the charts.

1984

🎙 Frankie Goes To Hollywood’s ‘Relax‘ became the longest running chart hit since Engelbert Humperdink‘s ‘Release Me‘, after spending 43 weeks on the UK singles chart.

1990

🎙 George Michael scored his second UK No.1 solo album with his second release ‘Listen Without Prejudice Vol.1.’ The album went on to sell over 8 million copies worldwide.

🎙 The Steve Miller Band had a UK No.1 with ‘The Joker‘ 16 years after its first release. The song topped the US Billboard Hot 100 in early 1974. More than 16 years later it reached No.1 in the UK singles chart after being used in “Great Deal“,  a Hugh Johnson directed television advertisement for Levi’s, thus holding the record for the longest gap between transatlantic chart toppers.

🎙 Wilson Phillips had their second US No.1 with ‘Release Me‘, a No.36 hit in the UK. The group was made up of Carnie & Wendy Wilson, the daughters of Beach Boys leader Brian Wilson, along with Chynna Phillips, the daughter of Mamas and Papas founder John Phillips.

1994

🎙 A reel to reel tape of The Quarry Men appearing at St Peter’s Parish Church garden party Liverpool in July, 1957, sold for £69,000, ($125,000) at a Sotheby’s auction.

1997

🎙 A 34-year-old man was awarded more than £20,000 by a French court after he lost his hearing when he stood too close to loudspeakers at a U2 concert in 1993.

2003

🎙 ABBA tribute acts overtook Elvis Presley impersonators in the battle of British covers singers according to a survey. The Swedish group jumped from third most tributed act in 2001 to top in 2002 with imitators like Abba Fever and Voulez Vous putting on Abba shows. Elvis dropped to number two while The Beatles dropped to three. The Performing Right Society carried out the research.

2004

🎙 Ramones guitarist Johnny Ramone (John Cummings) died in Los Angeles after a five-year battle with prostate cancer. The founding member of The Ramones was a major influence on many punk and 90’s bands. In 1977 the scored a hit single with ‘Sheena Is A Punk Rocker‘.

2006

🎙 The Casbah Coffee Club in Liverpool where The Beatles played their first gig was given a Grade II listed building status after a recommendation from English Heritage. John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison played in the converted coal cellar of the house in West Derby, in August 1959 as The Quarrymen.

2008

🎙 Pink Floyd keyboard player and founding member Richard Wright died aged 65 from cancer. Wright appeared on the group’s first album, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, in 1967 alongside Syd Barrett, Roger Waters and Nick Mason. David Gilmour who joined the band at the start of 1968 said: “He was such a lovely, gentle, genuine man and will be missed terribly by so many who love him” In 2005, the full band reunited – for the first time in 24 years – for the Live 8 concert in London’s Hyde Park. Wright had also contributed vocals and keyboards to Gilmour’s 2006 solo album On An Island.

2014

🎙 Apple released a tool to remove U2’s new album from its customers’ iTunes accounts six days after giving away the music for free. Some users had complained about the fact that their latest album Songs of Innocence had automatically been downloaded to their devices without their permission.

This Weeks Fresh Friday’s Featured Artist – Kristin Berardi

Welcome back to another awesome edition of Fresh Friday, this weeks feature Artist is a friend I went to primary and High school with many years ago, we wont mention how many though! I remember back then, Kristin being musically talented so it only seemed fit that my friend and exceptionally talented singer Kristin Berardi feature in this weeks Fresh Friday Article.

Kristin is originally from a small country town of Koumala in North Queensland, Australia and is one of Australia’s first calls when it comes to Jazz Singing. Kristin has quite a few impressive awards under her belt including the most recently winning a Bell Award for Best Vocal Album and the Art Music Award – Queensland State Award for Excellence in Jazz for “Hope in My Pocket” Berardi/Foran/Karlen, just to name a few! Not only is Kristin a talented Jazz Singer, she is also a talented Jazz lecturer at the Brisbane Conservatorium Of Music in Queensland, Australia.

Kristin has a voice of an angel and can evoke goosebumps, the only way I can describe her voice is exceptional quality, rich, smooth dark chocolate. She has such a beautiful tone and range and the musicians on her albums are incredibly talented also The music arrangement and Kristin’s  voice compliment each other and is an absolute joy to listen to, it is really music to your ears! I feel i need to be sipping whisky on the rocks, while sitting in leather chair, in a dimly lit bar!  Kristin’s albums are a must for your playlist, you will wonder how you have  lived without her music all these years once you hear her smooth tones.

Kristin was kind enough to take some time out of her busy schedule and do our Fresh Friday Q&A, lets take a look….

Fresh Friday Q&A With Kristin Berardi

Presh: Where did your love and passion for music come from? and how did that influence your style as a Singer?

Kristin Berardi: I grew up in a household where music always happening.. my mum loves music, and taught music from home, so I was always around it growing up.  It influenced me more in my habits as a musician i think then my style, just in that I ended up going down a different path for style but I always knew practises was important for bettering your skills, and for confidence too.

Presh: As a Singer, has your first love always been jazz?

KB: No (smiley face) definitely, not. I grew up listening to what was on the pop charts, and loved Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Boyz II Men… john Farnham, and The Beach Boys got a look in too. But Yeah – I wanted to be the next Mariah…. without that extraordinary range though.

I did classical violin all throughout primary and high school, but i was introduced to Jazz in high school. It was the Australian singer Vince Jones that really turned my head… I didn’t realises “jazz” was as broad a term. I heard him and thought ” If  that is jazz, then I like Jazz”.

Presh: Who are your major musical influences?

KB: Mariah! Vince Jones, Crowed House, Sarah Vaughan, Pat Metheny, Gretchen Parlato, Cassandra Wilson, Carmen McRae, Brad Meldau, Keith Jarrett.

Presh: What has been the most memorable moment in your career so far?

KB: In 2007 I was supporting Al Jarreau and George Benson at the Montreux Jazz festival, which was part of a prize from winning the International jazz Vocal Competition there the year before (of which Al Jarreau was the judge). I was performing with my friend and wonderful guitarist James Sherlock, and we heard folks cheering us on from the wings…. we looked over perplexed as we knew no one there, and it wa Al and his band, giving us support from the side stage! I won’t ever forget that!!!

Presh: Where do you draw your inspiration from when writing a song?

KB: Mainly from what is going on in my life, or those around me…So mainly real events. Sometimes it will hit me straight away that ill have to write about something, like when I met this elderly gentleman in a Brooklyn laundry mat , or other times it takes longer…more time to ponder life’s journey and time at the piano. It seems that the song writing process is a changing one so I have to just go with it, and be open to it when it calls, not just force an idea, but be patient.

On This Day 8th September In Music History

Welcome back to the latest edition of OTD, this week we kick off in 1952 with Ray Charles but it wouldn’t be OTD without the usual suspects making an appearance, including The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, David Bowie just to name a few. Right let’s get into this weeks OTD.

1952

🎙 After Atlantic Records bought Ray Charles‘ contract from Swingtime, Charles recorded his first session for Atlantic, cutting four songs. Over the next seven years, he will record such classics as ‘Mess Around, ‘I Got a Woman, ‘Hallelujah, I Love Her So‘ and ‘What’d I Say‘.

1956

🎙 Eddie Cochran signed a one year contract with Liberty Records, Cochran went on to give Liberty three top 40 hits over the next several years including ‘Summertime Blues‘, ‘Twenty Flight Rock‘ and ‘C’mon Everybody‘.

1957

🎙 ‘Reet Petite‘ by Jackie Wilson was released for the first time, it became a UK No.1, 29 years later. During a 1975 benefit concert, Wilson collapsed on-stage from a heart attack and subsequently fell into a coma that persisted for nearly nine years untill his death in 1984.

1968

🎙 The Beatles performed ‘Hey Jude‘ on the UK television show Frost On Sunday in front of an invited audience. The song was the first single from The Beatles’ record label Apple Records and at over seven minutes in length, ‘Hey Jude‘ was, at the time, the longest single ever to top the British charts. It also spent nine weeks at No.1 in the United States – the longest run at the top of the American charts for a Beatles’ single.

🎙 Led Zeppelin appeared at Raventlow Parken Nykobing, Falster, Denmark supported by The Beatnicks and The Ladybirds, (who were an all girl topless go-go dancing outfit). This was the group’s third ever live gig.

1971

🎙 The Trams were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with ‘Hey Girl Don’t Bother Me‘, a reissue of a 1964 US hit.

1973

🎙 Marvin Gaye started a two-week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘Let’s Get It On‘, his second  US No.1, however it only reached No.31 in the UK.

🎙 The Allman Brothers started a five-week run at No.1 on the US album chart with ‘Brothers And Sisters‘, the group’s only US No.1.

1974

🎙 Joni Mitchell, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and The Beach Boys all appeared at the New York Summersault ‘74′ at Roosevelt Raceway in Westbury.

1977

🎙 Guitarist Jimmy McCulloch left Wings to help re-form the Small Faces. Mcculloch had played with Paul McCartney band on the Venus and Mars and Wings At the Speed of Sound albums, as well as on the Wings Over America tour. He died two years later at the age of 26. Drummer Joe English also left Wings at this time, joining Sea Level.

1979

🎙 Led Zeppelin scored their eighth UK No.1 album when In Through The Out Door went to the top of the charts for two-weeks.

1984

🎙 Stevie Wonder had his first UK No.1 with ‘I Just Called To Say I Love You‘. Taken from the film ‘The Woman In Red’, it was 18 years after Wonder’s chart debut in 1966. The song stayed at No.1 for six weeks.

1990

🎙 Jon Bon Jovi went to No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘Blaze Of Glory‘, a No.2 in the UK. The track appeared in the motion picture ‘Young Guns II” for which it was originally recorded.

1993

🎙 Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love appeared on stage together at a show in Hollywood. The performed a song they wrote together ‘Penny Royal Tea‘.

1997

🎙 Derek Taylor the publicist for The Beatles died aged 67. Taylor had been responsible for many of the legends surrounding their career and had also worked with The Beach Boys and The Byrds. In 1976 he helped organise the Monterey Pop Festival together with Lou Adler and John Philips. He helped launch The Beatles Anthology trilogy in the 90’s.

🎙 29 years after the band first formed, Led Zeppelin released ‘Whole Lotta Love‘, their first ever single in the UK. The track recorded in 1969 and featured on the bands second album was issued to promote their re-issued back catalogue.

1999

🎙 Sean Puffy Combes and his bodyguard Paul Offered both pleaded guilty to harassment in a New york court. The pair faced charges of assaulting record company executive Steve Stoute with a champagne bottle a chair and a telephone.

2002

🎙 Iron Maiden singer Bruce Dickinson started his new job as an airline pilot. the heavy metal singer qualified as  a £35,000 – a year first office with Gatwick based airline Astraeus who holidaymakers to Portugal and Egypt.

2003

🎙 David Bowie performed the first interactive concert when his performance was beamed live into 21 cinemas from Warsaw to Edinburgh. Members of the audience talked to Bowie via microphones linked to ISDN lines and took requests for songs from fans.

2004

🎙 Led Zeppelin front man Robert Plant was guest of honor at the unveiling of a statue of the 15th century rebel leader Owain Glyndwr and Pennal Church, near Machynlleth in Wales. Plant, who owns a farmhouse in the area had donated money towards a bronze sculpture of the Welsh Prince.

2005

🎙 Rod Stewart was ordered to pay a Las Vegas casino $2m (£1.1m) for missing a New Year concert in 2000. Stewart had said he was unable to play at the Rio Hotel and Casino because his voice disappeared after an operation to remove a cancerous thyroid tumor. The singer said his voice only recovered in time to begin a world in June 2001 and he had since performed 150 shows.

🎙 A charity album featuring some of the biggest bands in the UK wa thought to be the fastest ever produced. Coldplay, Radiohead, Kaiser Chiefs, Antony and the Johnsons, The Magic Numbers, The Coral, Bloc Party and Gorillaz were among those who recorded tracks for Help: A Day in the Life. The whole 22-track album was made available for download from the War Child website the following day.

2007

🎙 Foxy Brown was sent to jail for a year in New York for violating her probation terms after she travelled outside New York without the court’s permission and  had missed anger management classes. The rapper (real name Inga Marchand), was arrested for allegedly assaulting a neighbour and in October 2006 she was put on probation for allegedly assaulting two nail salon workers in August 2004.

🎙 A commemorative plaque dedicated to Don Arden and the Small Faces was unveiled at 52-55 Carnaby Street, London, Arden’s formers offices. Arden achieved notoriety in Britain for his aggressive, sometimes illegal business tactics and looked after the career’s of Small  Faces, the Move, the Electric Light Orchestra and Black Sabbath. Lady Gaga Releases Cover Art And Lyrics For Upcoming “Perfect Illusion”

Lady Gaga has just revealed on Tuesday night (Sept. 6) the cover art and lyric of her new song on twitter in advance of the song’s release on Friday.

In a second pic Gaga is seen swing a mic over a cheering crowd could this be the songs “Perfect Illusion” video?

Gaga also revealed some of the lyrics from the up coming single “Perfect Illusion” on Twitter…..

“I Don’t need eyes to see – I felt you touchin’ me – High like amphetamine – Maybe you’re just a dream.”

At the iHeartRadio Music Summit last month Gaga described the inspirations of the song this way: “The song is about modern ecstasy…. We found our sweet, simple, ragey way of saying it… I get this sick adrenaline rush every time I hear it.”
“Perfect Illusion” is produced by Gaga, Mark Ronson, Tame Impala singer Kevin Parker and Bloodpop. The single will be Gaga’s first solo release in almost three years and anticipation for the track is high, in fact the single debuted at No.1 on the Billboard + Twitter Pop Track chart last month, weeks before it was scheduled to arrive.
