Two Of The World’s Festivals Heavy Weights Are Collaborating

wp-1471499056041.jpg

Two of the worlds festival heavy weights, from the opposite sides of the world are set to collaborate. I am of course talking about South Australia’s Fringe festival and Edinburgh International festival. How exciting for both this beautiful cities, I have been privileged to attend Adelaide’s Fringe Festival many, many  years ago (2002 ish) and it was my first arts festival and it was such a great experience back then, so I could only imagine how awesome it has become come and whats more how,  awesome it will be in the future with the collaboration.

The representatives from the Adelaide Festival, Adelaide Fringe and Festivals Adelaide each have signed official agreements with their Edinburgh counterparts to set joint goals for artistic, business and community collaboration over the next three years. Rachel Healy, Co-Artistic Director of the Adelaide Festival, said the agreement between the Adelaide Festival and the Edinburgh International Festival watershed for both organisations.

“It is thrilling to contemplate a shared future which involves creative collaborations, commissions, and artistic exchange; opportunities to share market insights and new audience and business initiatives; and celebrating the commitment of audiences in both cities to a rich and diverse cultural life,” Healy said.

Adelaide will see an immediate result of the agreement as the United Kingdom’s largest ticketing company, Red61 will be opening in Adelaide.

According to South Australian Arts Minister Jack Snelling, the new $350,000 digital platform will be South Australian owned and will put Adelaide Fringe at the forefront of digital technology in the international festivals industry by streamlining and integrating the way all groups connect with the Fringe, Snelling added that,

This platform will also provide a sophisticated matchmaking for interstate and international buyers looking to purchase new work and improve media and PR interaction with the artists and events and increase access to the Fringe by educators and students of all ages”.

The industry alliance that represents the top 10 arts festivals in South Australia, Festival Adelaide announced that Adelaide will host a meeting of the International Festival Cities Network in March 2017, where representatives from Edinburgh, Barcelona, Krakow, Montreal and Berlin will gather in Adelaide to share their knowledge, Ideas and experience.

Big things are set for Adelaide and Edinburgh in the near future, so watch this space!!

On This Day 18th August 2016 In Music History

wp-1471480159005.png

Welcome to the latest edition of OTD! For those that have just discovered us, On The Day is a weekly article where we look back on what happened in music history on that day through the years. This week we kick off in 1962, with some of the usual suspects.

On This Day……

1962

🎙 Ringo Starr made his debut with The Beatles at the horticultural society Dance, Birkenhead, England, having had a two-hour rehearsal in preparation and was the first appearance of The Beatles as the world would come to know them: John, Paul, George and Ringo.

1964

🎙 Over 9,000 frenzied fan met The Beatles as they arrived in San Francisco, to begin an American tour. The Beatles were driven into a protective fence enclosure so that photographers could take pictures. As the 9,000 fans pressed against the fencing, it gave way, with The Beatles managing to get out split-seconds before it came crashing down.

1966

🎙 Paul Jones left Manfred Mann just as ‘Pretty Flamingo‘ was climbing the US charts, Jones was replaced by singer Mike D’Abo who would take over lead vocals on the bands next hit, ‘The Mighty Quinn‘ which was written by Bob Dylan.

1969

🎙 Mick Jagger was accidentally shot in the hand during filming of Ned Kelly in Australia. The film was dogged by problems; Jagger’s then girlfriend, Marianne Faithfull, had gone to Australia to play the lead female role (Ned’s sister, Maggie), however Jagger-Faithfull relationship was breaking up and Faithfull too an overdose of sleeping tablets soon after her arrival in Sydney which resulted in being hospitalised in a coma, and pulling out of the film.

1973

🎙 Diana Ross scored her second US No.1 single with ‘Touch Me In The Morning‘. The song marked a turning point in her career, coming immediately after her Academy Award nomination for Best Actress in her acting debut in Lady Sings The Blues.

1976

🎙 ‘Variety’ reported that Marvin Gaye faced tow consecutive five-day prison terms in Los Angeles county jail for contempt of court after failing to pay alimony and child support.

1977

🎙 The Police made their live debut as a three-piece band when they played at Rebecca’s Birmingham, England. The Police became globally popular in the late 1970s and are generally regarded as one of the first New Wave groups to achieve mainstream success, playing a style of rock that was influenced by punk, reggae, and jazz.

🎙 Two Missouri girls were killed and a third was critically injured when a car being driven by an 18-year-old Memphis teen swerved into a crowd of over 2,000 mourners standing in front of Graceland’s music gate at about 4am. The driver was charged with drunk driving, leaving the scene of and accident and two counts of second degree murder.

1979

🎙 British singer, songwriter, producer Nick lowe married Johnny Cash’s stepdaughter Carlene Carter in Los Angeles. The couple is now divorced.

🎙 Chic went to No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘Good Times‘, the group’s second US No.1, and a No.5 hit in the UK.

1982

🎙 The City of Liverpool named four Streets after the fab four: John Lennon Drive, Paul McCartney Way, George Harrison Close and Ringo Starr Drive.

1984

Show Me Island where have you been all my life? I have had Ring Around & Run on repeat for a week, Lauren’s vocals are spot on and her voice has a stunningly beautiful uniqueness to it, like that of Amy Winehouse, it’s full of soul. The guys on the instruments are just unbelievably talented and they have the hit the sweet spot nailed the balance between vocals and music. Their music and sound is infectious and before you know it, the music has taken control of your body and you are taping away. If this music doesn’t get into your soul then my friend you are missing out! (currently getting my groove on to Show Me Island in my arm-chair).

Show Me Island Q&A

Decribe Show Me Island in five words.

Ska, reggae and dark meme

When did the band form and what was the inspiration for the bands name?

We formed in the summer of 2011 with a typical story of most members coming from other various local ska bands. The name came from our bassist, John. He was watching Futurama  and Hermes said, “I’m from Jamaica, the show me island!” So, I don’t think he wasted any time in suggesting it as the band name and here we are!

Who are your major musical influences?

Each member has a little bit of a different taste in music but all share a love for some form of ska. So the influences range from Amy Winehouse, the Specials to Westbrown Train, Metallica and more!

What has been your most memorable band moment?

Okay, so, we got asked to open for The Mighty Mighty Bosstones. While filled with excitement, we got some shirts made so we had something to sell at the big show. The design wehad was pretty much a circle with Show Me Island written on the inside and as for shirts, we thought a gray shirt with another shade of grey ink would look cool… That sounds kind of cool, right? Well, we get the shirts back and unless you looked at them juuuust right, it looks like a shirt with a big dark dot right in the middle. We still bring them to the show beacuse it’s all we got. Before the show, Dicky Barrett, the frontman of the Bosstones comes to say hi and asks if we have any shirts. (Side note – nicest guy, 10/10 would meet again) We show him the shirts and he just starts laughing. “This is straight out of Spinal Tap, “he said, “gotta get some new shirts for the Bosstones show, I hope they look good!” After a few minutes of laughing with us (at us?), he brought a shirt and we got  this photoand a fun story. We have much better shirts now, check them out at ShowMeIsland.com

wp-1471298249418.jpg

What’s the song writting process like for Show Me Island?

Our song writing process is a collaborative effort. We usually start with a chord progression or sometimes a melody and work from there. Once we have a skeletal version of the song, Lauren will start writing lyrics and melodies and we build the rest around that.

Here is a little teaser for you:
