The Expanse: S1 Ep7 Windmills

We’re seven episodes into the SyFy channel’s hit TV series, The Expanse. Make sure you can pay full attention. This is another cerebral episode intended to build to the action of the last few episodes.

Ceres Station

Windmills picks up with Miller on his way home. He’s broken up about being fired. He’s also trying to figure out what he’s going to tell Julie Mao’s father. Eventually, he sees a picture of Dawes and decides to go confront him. He knows Dawes is behind his being let go from Star Helix. And, of course, he wants to settle the little matter of Dawes trying to have him killed.

Miller walks into a known OPA hang out and begins to cause a commotion. Dawes is there and calms things down before they get bad for Miller. Dawes tries to make nice with him, but Miller won’t budge. He just wants Dawes to know that, even though he’s been fired, he’s going to continue investigating the Julie Mao case.

Later, Miller goes back to Julie Mao’s apartment to look for more clues. As he’s leaving, he sees the mysterious bird that’s been following him around. Then he gets a message from an old friend. It seems the Anubis, the ship Mao was on, hasn’t been heard from lately, but a shuttle from the Anubis has been located on Eros.

Miller decides that’s where he needs to go. He quickly packs a few things and rushes off to catch the next shuttle.

Rocinante

holden-and-crew

Holden and crew are researching the current political climate they’ve been involuntarily conscripted into. They’re amazed at how big the situation is becoming.

They’re hoping to stay off the radar but come across an MCRN ship. Naomi is able to evade them. Then they find a mysterious radio transmission emanating from somewhere on the Rocinante. Amos goes to check things out and finds a stowaway.

They question him and he says he’s a consultant who’s been hired to spy on Fred Johnson. He insists that he’s friendly. But, while Holden is questioning the stowaway, the MCRN ship suddenly decides to send out a boarding team to check out the Rocinante. The stowaway tries to get Holden to work with the Mars Navy. Holden and crew are unsure whether to trust him or not.

Things get tense with the approach of the boarding ship. Holden and Amos are at the dock. Amos is ready to fight to the death. Holden wants to be cautious. There’s another standoff between the two.

As the pressure builds, the stowaway offers to help the crew of the Rocinante by keeping up their disguise. Just as the troops are about to board, Alex (a former Mars Navy pilot) remembers a codeword that the MCRN uses to signify when they are undercover.

It seemingly works. As soon as he says the codeword, the MCRN troops back off. They even turn friendly.

Finally, they crew believes they are home free until they get to Eros Station. They also locate the last known whereabouts of Lionel Polanski, the person Fred Johnson has tasked them with finding.

As they speed on their way, we notice there is something strange about the stowaway.

Earth: A North American Farming Collective: Montana.

Avarasala is visiting the place where Holden grew up. She meets Holden’s Mom.

It’s a very strategic conversation with a lot of technical positioning.

Mrs. Holden cuts to the chase and calls out Avarasala. Avarasala likes that. She wants to know if Holden was involved in the destruction of the Canterbury and the Donnager. Avarasala doesn’t think he’s innocent. Avarasala says she want’s to understand Holden in order to stop a war.

Finally, Avarasala makes a connection with Holden’s Mom. She hints that there is intelligence suggesting Holden may still be alive. Avarasala offers some information on where Holden might be. But she want’s more information in return.

His Mom finally opens up. Holden was supposed to take over the farm. The co-op raised Holden to think of himself as a leader. They gave him the best education. Then his Mom realized that was unrealistic so she told him to go out and explore the universe.

Satisfied, Avarasala is leaving the farm when she is contacted by the UN Undersecretary, Sadavir Errinwright, who informs her that her spy (the stowaway) has been captured by Holden and crew. He also tells her that Holden and crew gave fake codes during the boarding conversation that were being monitored by the United Nations. Turns out the reason the MCRN ship left them alone was because the UN told them to.

The Undersecretary has already activated a black ops team to get rid of Holden, Naomi, Amos, and Alex on Eros. Avarasala is devastated.

The Emmy Awards: The Big Winners

Every year the Emmy Awards recognises the top talent on television. Considered to be one of the highest accolades a TV series can be nominated for, especially for an American audience, the awards show normally attracts a lot of celebrity attention. The 68th annual prime time Emmy ceremony was hosted this year by comedian Jimmy Kimmel (a quick glance at the photos made me realise I didn’t know the difference between Jimmy Kimmel and Jimmy Fallon… oops… while planning out this article I had the Lip Sync Battle guy in my head!) who followed the current trend of ‘roasting’ celebrities both present and absent. This hit some high points (any mocking reference of Donald Trump) and some bum notes (suggesting Bill Cosby was coming out to present an award.

The Winners

For your enjoyment, here’s a list of all the folks who walked away with a trophy (and who I would have voted for if I was Queen of the World).

  • Outstanding Drama Series – Game of Thrones (I would have picked Mr Robot. I love GoT but I thought the first series on Mr Robot was much more interesting than the latest season of the Thrones)
  • Comedy Series – Veep (Again, I love Veep, but I think Master of None or Silicon Valley were both stronger than Selina and co this year)
  • Outstanding Limited Series – The People vs OJ Simpson (I probably would have gone for this or Fargo – both were awesome)
  • Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series – Rami Malek for Mr Robot (I totally agree with this. He’s fantastic)
  • Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series – Tatiana Maslany for Orphan Black (I can’t even express how much this woman deserves this award. She plays like 7 individual characters, who sometimes play each other. She should have won this award every year since she started!!)

Tatiana Maslany – Hand this lady all the awards

  • Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series – Jeffrey Tambor for Transparent (I would have chosen Aziz Ansari for Master of None myself, although he may very well just be playing himself…)
  • Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series- Julia Louis-Dreyfus for Veep (I would agree with this too. I think she was fab.)
  • Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie – Courtney B. Vance for The People v. O.J. Simpson (I probably would agree with this. I didn’t see The Night Manager and maybe if I had, I would pick Tom Hiddleston instead)
  • Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie – Sarah Paulson for The People v. O.J. Simpson (I thought she was amazing, and I certainly think she deserves the award, but I might just have picked Kirsten Dunst for her role in Fargo instead)
  • Outstanding Reality-Competition Program – The Voice (I’d not seen any of the shows in this category, but American Ninja Warrior sounded pretty cool…)
  • Outstanding Variety Talk Series – Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (Absolutely. I think John Oliver is one of the best people on TV. Give him all the awards)

John Oliver saw off two Jimmys and a James for his award

  • Outstanding Television Movie – Sherlock: The Abominable Bride (Yeah, this was pretty good. I think I’d have picked it too. Give Cumberbatch something to celebrate)
  • Outstanding Variety Sketch Series – Key & Peele (I’ve not seen much of these guys, but if Keenan-Michael Key’s ‘Anger Translation’ of Obama’s speech is anything to go by, they probably earned it)
  • Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series – Ben Mendelsohn for Bloodline (There were so many great actors to choose from, but I think I would have gone with Jonathan Banks in Better Call Saul)
  • Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series – Maggie Smith for Downton Abbey (Sorry guys, I’m totally over DA. I’d have picked Maisie Williams in GoT for this one)
  • Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series – Louie Anderson for Baskets (For me, this one had to be Tituss Burgess for Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt – a disappointing loss there)
  • Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series – Kate McKinnon for Saturday Night Live (She’s a very talented lady, so I’m with the committee on this one)
  • Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie – Sterling K. Brown for The People v. O.J. Simpson (I might have picked David Schwimmer for this one, as I thought he was incredible)
  • Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie – Regina King for American Crime (I think I would have picked Jean Smart for Fargo as  was understated and brilliant throughout

Game of Thrones and The People v. O.J. Simpson both took home further awards for writing , as did Aziz Ansari for Master of None. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler were recognised as Outstanding Guest Actresses in a Comedy Series for their appearance on SNL.

Spider-Gwen Makes Debut Appearance in Ultimate Spider-Man

Marvel’s had its fair share of female Spider titles: Silk, Spider-Woman, a number of Spider-Girls, Madame Web – but none seem to have captured fans attention like Spider-Gwen. Originally introduced as part of the 2014-15 Spider-Verse event, she was quickly given her own series, following the Gwen Stacy of Earth-65; an alternate universe where Gwen was bitten by the radioactive spider, not Peter Parker.

Not content with her own popular series, Gwen is now hitting the screens in Disney X D’s Ultimate Spider-Man. She’s voiced by Dove Cameron, a previous Disney Channel sweetheart, best known as Mal in Descendants. Some careful Googling reveals that this is the Disney channel tv movie about the kids of Disney villains, not the 2011 film starring George Clooney  – every day’s a school day!

In her first appearance, released on Marvel’s YouTube channel, she runs into Peter Parker and Miles Morales while holding a bag of money she’s recovered from some bank robbers. Of course the guys think she’s the culprit – she looks like she’s been caught red-handed. She explains herself, and, to be honest, Parker seems cool with it. We know he’s a sucker for a pretty face. I’m going to assume there’s a pretty face under the mask.

The 3 vigilantes are then cornered by none other than Captain George Stacey (who happens to be her dad). She then tells the two guys that he’s her dad – which seems a bit crazy to me. Does no-one respect the secret identity any more? Or are they ok knowing who she is because they’re Spider-Men? I don’t know Gwen, but it seemed like a rookie mistake to me. Schoolgirl error.

Watch the clip here to judge for yourself:

The clip comes from season 4 finale ‘Return to the Spider-Verse’ which will be on Disney X D 17th September.

Game of Thrones Casts Angela Lansbury For Season 7

angela

It’s no secret that HBO‘s Game of Thrones is known to cast the most talented individuals —old and young. So it should be no surprise that HBO has casted another great to its ranks, Angela Lansbury, after casting Jim Broadbent.

Lansbury is rumoured to be guest starring in two episodes of the upcoming Season 7, which will premiere next summer. HBO has yet to officially confirm this rumour, but the actress will reportedly be on set for four days.

So who is Angela Lansbury and why is she joining the brilliant cast of Game of Thrones? Lansbury has won an Academy Award, six Golden Globes, a BAFTA, a PCA, a Star on the Walk of Fame and 16 other awards.

At the age of 91 this year, she is an English-Irish-American actress, who has worked in theatre, television and film. Her career has lasted more than seven decades. Her most notable roles include:

Nancy in Gaslight

Salome Otterbourne in Death on the Nile

Jessica Fletcher in Murder She Wrote

Are you excited to see such an extraordinary actress join the Game of Thrones universe? Since she’s supposedly only in two episodes, I’m interested to see the role she will play and her eventual demise. What’re your thoughts? Share, comment and like below, or tweet me @SohoDoll. And as always, “The theatre is magical and addictive” – Angela Lansbury.

SyFy Series: The Expanse Update

Hey, y’all! Deven B here. I’m taking my own sweet time getting to S1 Ep7 of our favorite SyFy series: The Expanse. Don’t worry, I promise it’s on the way! This damn work thing seems to want to keep me away from what I really like to do which is camp out in front of my TV and escape into space with Miller, Holden, and the rest of The Expanse universe.

In the meantime I’ve been following the guys on twitter and checking the internet-verse for news and updates. Occasionally, I’m late on some of the news so if you’ve seen this already, awesome!

The biggest news to hit lately is it looks like a fan favorite from the book series, Robert “Bobbie” Draper, will join the story in the second season. Bobbie Draper will be played by newcomer Frankie Adams.

Frankie Adams for Skatronixxx

Other exciting news I’ve come across is the fact that the TV series is still only 2/3rds of the way through the first book. However, show runner Naren Shankar admits that he’s been jumping between books to make the show flow better.

When asked, Shankar does let on that other popular characters from the books will be introduced in season 2.

SyFy brings the popular series back in early 2017. Stay tuned to Skatronnixxx.com for news and updates on The Expanse.

The Expanse: SDCC 2016 – Full Panel

Don’t laugh at me. This is the first year I’ve actually paid attention to what was happening at San Diego Comic-Con. Until now, it hasn’t been something I’ve followed.

Enter The Expanse.

I can’t put my finger on why I’m totally loving this show but I can tell you I was hooked from the opening scene.

If you’re still undecided about the show, here’s the full panel from this year’s SDCC to give you a bit of insight.

Enjoy!

The Expanse SN1 EP5- ‘Back To The Butcher’

The action is again slowed down for Episode 5 but the tension and mystery grow exponentially. “Back to the Butcher” focuses on the interpersonal relationships between some of the main characters. It also delves into a bit of history and background in The Expanse universe.

Ceres Station

Though he’s pissed off, Detective Miller is visiting his wounded partner in the hospital. He’s mad that Havelock went into a dangerous area of Ceres Station without him. To top it all off, Gia, the prostitute from EP. 1 is at the hospital, too.

Havelock attempts to explain that Gia is teaching him the language, but Miller doesn’t care. After a huge argument, Miller storms out of the hospital room.

Miller takes the rapid transit from the hospital. While in close quarters with other Belters, he becomes very aware of the tension on Ceres Station. The Belters are still angered by the destruction of the Cant.

Meanwhile, at the Star Helix Security station, the Captain is showing footage of the attack on Havelock and inciting the security team to go after Havelock’s attackers. Octavia notices Miller isn’t there, so heads to his apartment. When she arrives, she’s disappointed to find Miller has become even more obsessed with the Julie Mao case.  She doesn’t know about Miller’s and Havelock’s argument earlier that day.

Miller details what he’s found so far. He thinks there’s a connection between Julie Mao and all of the ships that have been attacked, he just can’t put his finger on the connection. He’s stumbled across the name of a ship called the Anubis, but can’t find anything else out about it.

Octavia feels Miller is getting too deep into the investigation and advises him to take what he’s found so far to his superiors.

Miller doesn’t want to take her advice. After Octavia leaves, he continues researching. He revisits footage of the fight Mao had in the shipyard where the Scopuli was docked. He figures she must have known the man she was fighting. Meanwhile, Dawes finds Miller and admits he does, in fact, know Mao. He also admits that she was important to the OPA and that the OPA is in control of more of Ceres than Miller originally suspected.

Dawes wants information on the Julie Mao investigation. In return, he offers up Havelock’s attacker. Dawes is pretending to keep him in a safe-house.

Still needing more clues, Miller finds the man Julie Mao beat up in the video. It turns out he, too is affiliated with the OPA. He’s also Julie Mao’s ex-lover. He corroborates that Mao was involved with Dawes and the OPA and is shocked when Miller explains her disappearance. In the end, he tells Miller the name of the bar where he can find the man who’s ID was really embedded in the corpse.

At the bar, Miller utters the password given to him and he’s taken to a secret room. Random pieces of tech are scattered throughout. Miller searches but doesn’t find much in the clutter. Then, he notices the parts to a mechanical hamster similar to the one he saw at Julie Mao’s apartment.

Ceres Station: Back at Mao’s apt. Miller finds the hamster and takes it apart. He finds the data chip he’s been looking for and hides it in a secret compartment in his hat. As he leaves the apt, he’s kidnapped.

He heads back and inspects the hamster. Inside it, he finds a data drive. Luckily, he hides the drive in his hat because as he’s leaving the apartment a sack is thrown over his head and he’s kidnapped.

MCRN TACHI

rsz_mcrn-1

The Tachi is the name of the ship that Holden, Naomi, Alex, Amos, and the now deceased Lopez escaped the Donnager on. They’re floating somewhere between Jupiter and The Belt trying to figure out what to do next. Currently, no one knows they survived the attack. As they begin to discuss what to do next, they’re alerted to an incoming message.

The message is from Fred Johnson. Somehow, he knows they’re alive and need a place to go. He’s suspicious but offers to help. Holden and crew are suspicious of Johnson, too. They know his past and that he worked with the OPA.

Holden and Alex decide they want to take up Johnson on his offer. Naomi doesn’t trust Johnson. Of course, Amos sides with Naomi. With no one in agreement, they decide to just wait where they are.

As they wait, they all explore the Tachi. They also receive news of the protests and riots on Ceres Station. They’re surprised to find that one reason for the rioting was anger over the destruction of the Cant, and the Holden has become a hero of the movement. Amos also talks Naomi into agreeing to accept Johnson’s offer to head to Tycho Station.

Johnson sends them instructions on how to get to Tycho without being detected. As a part of the process, they have to rename the Tachi. They choose the name, Rocinante (Spanish for “workhorse”). No doubt this will have significance later.

The four finally have a feeling of hops. It seems their ordeal may be over.

Anderson Station

Throughout the episode, we’ve been given small flashbacks to events that took place on Anderson Station, an ore refinery located in the belt.

Anderson Station was the site of a peaceful protest where the workers refused to continue working until they were given better conditions to work under. They were kept in low gravity and low oxygen levels constantly and this was causing disease among their children.

rsz_theexpanse_gallery_105recap_02

Apparently, there were some accidental casualties on the station during the protest, but the UN (Earth’s Government) refused to accept them as accidental. The UN labels the protesters as terrorists and proceeds end the protest violently.

We find out that it was Fred Johnson who was in charge of ending the protest. At the time, he was a Colonel in the UN Marine Corps. History remembers him as “The Butcher of Anderson Station.”

Stay tuned for S1: Ep. 6 coming soon.
