The 2016 Tony Awards – The Nominees & Winners

On the 12th of June all eyes were on the theater greats as they were celebrated for their incredible talent at the annual Tony Awards. This years event was hosted by a Tony Award winner himself James Corden and held at the Beacon Theatre in New York. Some of the presenters this year included – Cate Blanchett, Glenn Close, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Neil Patrick Harris and many more. Below are the Nominees and winner’s of this years Tony Awards, there is a lot to get through so without further ado let’s get started.

NOMINEES FOR BEST PLAY

Eclipsed – Author: Danai Gurira
Amid the chaos of the Liberian Civil War, the captive wives of a rebel officer band together to form a fragile commuity – untill the balance of their lives is upset by the arrival of a new girl. Lupita Nyong’o stars in this story of survival and resilience.

The Father – Author: Florian Zeller
Past Tony Award-winner Frank Langella stars in this fascinating look inside the mind of a retired dancer living with his adult daughter and her husband.

The Humans – Author: Stephen Karam
The angst, anguish and amity of the American middle class are first coaxed – then shoved – in to the light in this uproarious, hopeful, and heartbreaking play that takes place over the course of a family dinner on Thanksgiving.

King Charles III – Author: Mike Bartlett
The Queen is dead. After a lifetime of waiting, Prince Charles ascends the throne. A future of power that lies before him…. but how to rule?

A new musical based on the smash hit 2003 film of the same title, school of Rock – The Musical features music from the movie, as well as an original score by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Glenn Slater.

Shuffle Along, Or The Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed
In May 1921, the new musical Shuffle Along became the unlikeliest of hits, significantly altering the faces of the Broadway musical as well as that of New York City. Because of Shuffle Along, Uptown and Downtown met and became one.

Waitress
A new musical based on the 2007 motion picture written by Adrienne Shelly with a book by Jessie Nelson, music and lyrics by five-time Grammy Award nominated singer/songwriter Sara Bareilles.
