The 16th BET Awards were held on June 26th at the Microsoft Theater in L.A. live. The awards celebrate mass achievements in black entertainment and honors, music, sports, television and motion pictures (released between April 1, 2015 and March 30, 2016). This years BET Awards hosts were Black-ish co-stars Tracee Ellis Ross and Anthony Hamilton opened the awards night with a spoof of the Tony Award-winning Broadway play Hamilton.
Beyoncé surprised the audience with a performance of Lemonade track “Freedom”, that can only be described as electrifying. Prefaced by an excerpt from Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech as a formation of dancers parade down the theater aisles to the stage, Beyoncé opened the show by emerging from a cloud of smoke alongside her dancers in a wading pool of water. The audience was again suprised when Kendrick Lamar stepped into the pool with Beyoncé to splash, kick and stomp home the song’s powerful message. Other performer’s on the night included, Bibi Bourelly, Desiigner, Alicia Keys, Fat Joe, Remy Ma and French Montana, Chloe x Halle, Bryson Tiller, Future, Anderson Paak and Usher. The BET Awards also paid tribute to the late Great Prince throughout the awards, among those paying their respects were, Erykah Badu, Bilal, Stevie Wonder, Jennifer Hudson, Maxwell, Janelle Monae and Sheila E.
Two Honorary Awards were also given on the night –
Humanitarian Award – Awarded to Jesse Williams the Gray’s Anatomy star.
Lifetime Achievement Award – Awarded to Samuel L. Jackson.
