The era of remake and reboots, some movies should be left alone. While others need a serious upgrade. Like a movie about a mermaid who visits New York City and falls in love, but how about a merman? How about Channing Tatum as a merman? Yes, Please!

Channing Tatum and Jillian Bell will be starring in the gender swap remake of the 1984 movie Splash. The original movie starred Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah as the mermaid. In the 1984 love story/comedy, Hank’s character, as a boy is saved by a young mermaid who later comes back causing all kinds of mayhem in New York City. Eugene Levy and John Candy also starred in the film. Brian Glazer and Ron Howard created the 1984 version and are returning to produce the remake.

Hannah’s character discovers a new world of wonder in on dry land, but things go crazy when she accidentally reveals that she is a mermaid. Tom Hanks finds her and does everything he can to help her. In the end, Hanks ends up joining Hannah in her underwater world.
OK, so Channing Tatum as a merman will be visually pleasing, but think about Tatum as a comedic actor. In the original, Hannah’s character didn’t know anything about the world above water, not even about clothes. So I can only imagine the hilarity that will happen when Tatum’s merman sets foot on land this technological/social media world.
And Jillian Bell is so brilliantly funny. You may remember that she co-starred with Tatum in 22 Jump Street. She has also worked on Eastbound & Down, Workaholics and she’s was a writer for SNL, so she definitely has the comedic prowess to keep up with Tatum.
I’m excited about this one. I wonder if there will be a dance number? One can only hope…
