An Interview With Cosplayer Potato Child Cosplay

main

Hi Readers

It’s time for another cosplay interview, this time we meet Potato Child Cosplay. Potato Child Cosplay first caught my attention with her awesome Skyrim cosplays! Let’s find out some more about Potato Child Cosplay .

1) How did you get into cosplaying?

I started going to conventions when I was about 16, together with my best friend at the time. I always got so fascinated by those super talented cosplayers, and how they got to be whoever they wanted to be, so I figured I would give it a try. In 2014, when I was about 19- 20, I did my first cosplay, which was a total failure. But even with it being pretty bad, I had gotten a lot of compliments on my work and how I looked and the confidence that came from it, triggered me to keep doing it.

2) Where do you get your inspiration and ideas to cosplay from? Is it from programs you watch now or childhood programs or both?

I’ll cosplay any character I either really like, or relate to. This can be from games, movies, anime, cartoons,… both old ones as recent ones. I try not to get involved with cosplays where I have to dress as a character I do not know or do not like.

3) How do you put your outfits together are they 100% from scratch and if so what’s been your trickiest part to date?

My first two or three cosplays were bought. After that, with the help of some of my newly made cosplayfriends (who had more experience than I did, obviously) I started learning new skills. Like basic sewing, making props, painting techniques etc. I’d like to thank my mum who was  great help and inspiration to me in learning these new skills as well. I do struggle the most with sewing and making light props. I make pretty decent props, like weapons and such, but I always seem to mess up and make them weigh a ton! Oops..

4) What’s your favourite cosplay to date?

Out of the ones I’ve already made, my favourite has to be my Bosmer cosplay, from Skyrim, as this was the first one that was completely made from scratch. Next to that I’d also have to add either Jessie & James (Team Rocket) and Lola & Bugs Bunny (Space Jam), because they make me relive my childhood!

5) If you’ve cosplayed at a convention what was the experience like?

Honestly, at first it was all very overwhelming, but in a good way. As a shy girl with little self- confidence, all the newly found friendships, all the compliments and attention, made me blossom into the woman I am today. I am now way more open and confident. But I have to be completely honest that the Belgian Cosplay Community is way too much about competition and being the best, and after having been brought down multiple times by people, I have lost my confidence. But it’s my love for the characters and the good times with my friends that keep me cosplaying! Cosplaying at cons is scary sometimes, seeing all those skilled cosplayers, but then again, anyone can cosplay and the memories are the best I’ll have!

6) Can we expect to see you at any conventions this year?

I will, ofcourse, be visiting Belgian cons (like F.A.C.T.S. that is still coming up), besides that I’ll be visiting Gamescom in Germany (no cosplays tho) and Abunai & Elfia in the Netherlands. I am guessing little of the people reading this will be from Belgium, but if you are, feel free to come and say hi ANY TIME! I love meeting new people!

7) If you could cosplay as anyone and budget wasn’t an issue who would it be?

I have never really been very into those “big, heavy, impressing cosplays”. As said before, to me it’s about my love for the character. But if I had all the money needed, I would start on one cosplay in particular, right away. That is Alicia Melchiott, Valkyrur Version, from the anime and the game “Valkyria Chronicles”. Next to that, perhaps I could start on my Venusaur Gijinka too!

8) Do you have any words of advice for up and coming cosplayers?

Try not to get too overwhelmed by the skilled and popular cosplayers. Anyone is allowed to cosplay because it’s all about fun. You wanna buy your cosplays? Great! You wanna make them yourself? Go for it! Just NEVER forget to have fun! Also, do not be afraid to be “cheap”.

Cosplaying is so expensive! Don’t be scared to go to thrift shops or re-use materials to make your cosplays. Cosplaying is a hobby, it should not take up all of your savings. And always feel free to ask help to those who are more skilled, we are here to help!

9) Where can we find you online?

I have both a Facebook page, as an Instagram account for my cosplays.
