‘IDW’ To Merge Both ‘GhostBusters’ Movie Teams

ghostbusters-101-1

Remember when Paul Feig’s all-Female GhostBusters was reported as a sequel to the well-beloved 80’s original? Well thanks to IDW that is soon to become reality … sort of.

In an announcement via comicbook.com, comic book publisher IDW revealed plans to bring both GhostBusters movie teams together – for the first time – with ‘GhostBusters 101‘. The comic book series will see the original ghost-busting team of Venkman, Zeddemore, Stantz and Spengler cross the inter-dimensional stream with Holtzmann, Tolan, Yates and Gilbert, as both teams find their pocket universe inexplicably merged with the other.

In a brief description of the upcoming adventure released alongside IDW’s announcement. It gives an insight into what the original 80’s team has been up too since GhostBusters 2, with Venkman & Co going back to the classroom and teaching “the next generation of ‘busters” how to fight the paranormal:

“Shortly after the classic Ghostbusters decide to get back to their roots of teaching the next generation of ‘busters, an inter-dimensional mishap merges together their universe with that of the new crew of paranormal police. Now, with the fate of two dimensions in the balance (maybe more?!), can these distinctly different teams come together to repel the greatest supernatural challenge any of them have ever faced? They’re going to have to find a way if there’s any hope for survival. Prepare for mass hysteria of the dogs and cats living together variety, because this time everyone… ANSWERS THE CALL!”

IDW’s newest venture seems in line with Sony’s initiative to create a wider GhostBusters Universe which first came into the public consciousness back in early 2015 with the announcement of ‘Ghost Corps‘. A collective of creative minds – including the original films director Ivan Reitman and star Dan Aykroyd – who are charged with overseeing the franchise expansion into new Films, TV and other merchandising opportunities.

On the new comic book series, Reitman acknowledged that he has “always wanted to meld the two worlds.” Expressing that “it would be great fun to see them all together for the first time and I think it’s important for the future that we bring it back into a single universe.

With Feigs GhostBusters failing to set box offices alight, it has been believed that a sequel to the Melissa McCarthyKristen WiigKate McKinnon and Leslie Jones reboot wouldn’t happen. With GhostBusters 101 going forward with using the likeness, names and characters from the 2016 flop, this all but confirms that fans of the new film will have to make do with the comic book coming in March next year as well as the animated TV series that is reportedly in the works.

‘Who Ya Gonna Call?’ – Ghostbusters Universe To Continue

null

Whilst a sequel to the 2016 Ghostbusters may seem unlikely due to the widely reported $70m loss, plans for the Ghostbusters universe as a whole are still going ahead Sony have revealed.

A Sony representative recently offered a statement to the movie news magazine The Hollywood Reporter, where he claimed ‘We’re very proud of the bold movie Paul Feig made, which critics and audiences loved. It has enlivened a 30-year-old brand and put it into the modern zeitgeist. As a result, we have many ideas in the works to further exploit the Ghostbusters universe,’.

Ghostbusters cartoon Ecto-Force is set to debut on television in 2018 with an animated feature film following in 2019, although whether Sony have other plans in place is unclear. It’s worth noting that former Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman’s production company Ghost Corps was set up with the intention of finding ways to expand the Ghostbusters universe, so Sony are clearly dedicated towards making it their flagship franchise.

Ghostbusters has currently earned nearly $181 million globally, against some strong competition such as Suicide Squad and The Sexeet Life of Pets/. Paul Feig stated before Ghostbusters’ release that the film would have to make $300m to break even.

Whilst the female Ghostbusters may have failed to bust Harley Quinn and company at the box office, they have at least managed to ressurect a dormant franchise. Let’s hope Sony don’t have a Walter Peck equivalent trying to shut the business down.

San Diego Comic Con 2016 Funko Pop Exclusives! Wave 4

main

Let’s face it, everyone loves Funko Pops, they are this generations version of the Beanie Babies. They are cute, collectible and there seems to be no end to them. I started collecting them forSkatronixxx Jr but stopped after realising that I’d never be able to collect them all. Would I still continue collecting them? Sure if I had the money, but alas I have temporarily put my Funko Pop collection on hold, it doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy looking at them though!

There are however hardcore Funko fans out there and  the company knows this, that’s why they are aiming to bombard those lucky people who are going to San Diego Comic Con or SDCC with at least nine waves of exclusive figures.

What’s more having the ‘Funko Limited Edition 2016 Comic Con‘ sticker is a prize possesion for any serious collector and a cool trinket for the causal fan.
